Khida watched the red-haired girl as she worked through her own thoughts, apparently considering what the Kelvic had said. Her face darkened with concentration; she spoke, she signed; and then her expression lightened again, seemingly illuminated by a sudden idea. Did the girl understand what the Kelvic had tried to convey?

Time, she asked, and try dress, she said. Khida set the demonstration shirt back down, not at all as neatly as it had been laid out before, and unthinkingly put the dead bird down with it. "Time, yes," she affirmed; the pigeon would keep a little while, and she had nowhere else pressing to be. "Dress..." The woman didn't seem entirely sold on that notion. She remembered the dress the quiet girl had had her wear, which was fine for talking in but not really better than that shirt overall. But --

"I will try," she agreed, walking over to rejoin Rue. Maybe the red-haired girl would have something different. "What parts?"

I will find, Rue informed her, already searching for the right things in her mind, Wait please.

She searched quickly for a shirt with long sleeves that were loose and billowy. They would not stop the cold as well as fitted sleeves, but it would be easier to remove. She picked up one with the right sleeves, but it was a pull over, and really she needed a button down to get the right feel. She dug through the display but could not find one she wanted so she moved to another, leaving the rumpled mess behind her.

She found what she was looking for at the next table. It took the form of a bright yellow button front top with sleeves that were loose and made of a sheer material. This would be good for the sleeves.

The dress would be slightly more difficult, but also less. Wrap around dresses had come into fashion when a caravan of traders had come in with the new style from one city or another, and it lingered among the Drykas, but it would not be best suited for riding.

Would that be an issue though? Rue couldn't recall if Khida would learn to ride or not. Although, anything would be better than the curtain she currently wore.

So she grabbed the first wrap shaped dress she found and returned to Khida, an uncertain excitement in her bearing.

This sleeve, She offered the shirt for inspection, on dress similar to this she held up the dress in kind, offering them for inspection.

Communicating the rest of the plan, her intent to give the woman a dress that would wrap around her and tie at her waist so that she could remove it as easily as pulling loose the knot... that would be a much harder feat, and would require her to make the dress from scratch.

Khida waited while the red-haired girl dug among the shop's contents, blinking curiously at things she pulled out and set aside. Or in some cases, held on to. Eventually she came back, her posture hesitant and hopeful and eager, and held up two garments for the Kelvic to examine. A shirt first, with the sleeve indicated; a dress second, with no clear indication of relevant parts. Would she take the sleeves from the shirt, then, and put them on the dress?

Khida accepted the shirt, examining the sleeve rather dubiously. It was... a sleeve. A sleeve of thin fabric, almost see-through, stuff that didn’t seem like it would keep out cold or wet. And if it snagged on anything, it would almost certainly tear. Didn't that defeat the purpose of clothes? Her free hand gestured aimlessly, plucking pensively at the air; though no true signs emerged, her manner communicated skeptical uncertainty.

She set the shirt aside.

The dress... A moment's examination determined how to take it apart, Khida shaking the garment out into a loose length of cloth. That was intriguing -- it was like a robe, but shorter, and not so loose. Without so much as a moment's hesitation, the Kelvic slid out of her current robe, letting it slide to the ground. She folded the dress around herself in its place, sliding her arms into the sleeves and puzzling at how to tie the sash. When she had that squared away -- to her own satisfaction, if not with any particular style to the knot -- Khida examined the lay of the cloth with her fingers, adjusting where the neckline had rolled and sat uncomfortably. Shaking her hair back, briefly revealing the Chevas mark on her neck, she then leaned forward a bit and considered its knee-length skirt.

Her attitude remained contemplative of the garment, but in a hesitantly favorable manner.

"This," Khida finally said, fingertips lightly touching the skirt front. "Make this shorter? Maybe to here?" she asked, bringing her hand up to her hips -- high enough that the hem would clear her legs. "To go with trousers. To run and crouch and hunt. This is small," she added, taking the bottom hem in both hands and drawing it taut to demonstrate how little play it had.

Khida quickly seemed to discard the shirt, looking skeptically at the sleeves for a moment before setting the article aside.

She was far more interested in the dress, and Rue was bemused at the woman's quick dropping of her clothing in favor of the new article. She understood, somewhat, that she saw skin as an alternative to feathers, and that feathers didn't need clothing... but still Rue wasn't quite able to set aside her own beliefs about such things. She turned away, giving the woman the privacy of not looking, rather than privacy of a separate room.

So it was more luck than anything else that Rue glanced back at the other woman in time to catch a flash of color on the skin of her neck. Startled at the sight of a bruise in such a place, Rue couldn't help the question that shaped her body.

She left the query to hang in the air, Khida would acknowledge it or not, and politeness said that Rue should not push the matter further.

Khida seemed to favor the dress, although Rue could hardly tell what the woman said in common, something of 'make here'. Luckily the woman's motions were obvious enough. She was displeased with the length, but Rue blanched at the new length she wished, no longer a dress, but more of a shirt. Surely she couldn't plan to walk around bare from the hips down?

"Pants? Breeches?" Rue asked, confused and followed them with cover legs?

The girl adopted a curious manner, seeming perplexed by something. This perplexed Khida in turn; she canted her head and blinked at the girl, not understanding if she meant to ask about something. That she had partly turned away didn't really register with the Kelvic; or rather, it was chalked up to some distraction on the girl's part. No concern of Khida's, whatever it was.

The girl seemed unhappy with her remarks on the length; Khida couldn't imagine why. Lines creased her brow, deepening as the girl added words which only echoed what Khida herself had already said. "Trousers," she reiterated. "Pants. The same thing." All whole, her hands signed, the closest her approximate grasp of Pavi could come to what she meant to convey.

Rather than dwell on the communication issues, Khida resumed her investigation of the dress. The knot came undone no slower than the sash of her robe, but she thought it could be tied to come apart very quickly, with no more than a single pull. The other thing the dress had going for it was the deep neckline produced by the wrap. Shaking her hair back, she tested the right shoulder -- it would slide right off, just about as quickly as she could get the knot untied. That suited the Kelvic quite well.

'All whole'? Did she mean they were the same? She signed it Same? but mostly to offer the word to the woman, more sure that that was what she meant.

Pants were a different story. Depending on the woman's preference, she could want tight pants, that may allow her freedom of movement if sewn of the right fabric. They may be difficult to remove, though, so loose may be preferred, but could be a more limited motion without risking tearing the material.

Cotton would be suited for tight pants, the fabric was thick and movable to a point, and maybe a wool on the loose ones, better for keeping the wind from stealing warmth.

I will search for pants. She informed Khida, moving away to find just such things. Maybe some pins too, to show the hem of the dress - no shirt.

She found a fitted pair of breeches, one that looked about the right size for the woman. The loose fit pants were more difficult, but she had dug out a stock of them for one of the New Drykas women, and so it was a simple enough task to find a close size.

She did grab pins too on her way back to the waiting woman. She showed her the choices offering them for her to try on.

The girl went away and rummaged more in all her things, leaving Khida to stand around and wait. Again. She didn't really have anything else to inspect on the dress, which meant the Kelvic couldn't occupy herself with that.

Since they were there, Khida turned her attention to the clothes instead. Shirts. Cloaks. Vests. She stopped at the vests, picking up one which was definitively too large for her. Cut for a man's broad shoulders, it was woven from a reddish wool which reminded Khida of the cattle the Drykas raised. Zibri. Fur lined the inside, short and coarse and tawny brown, which she fingered thoughtfully. It would be warm, and easy to move in -- better than a cloak.

The girl came back, and Khida set the vest aside, draping it across the top of a table. This, she signed, then hesitated, frozen in the inward search for a word. It didn't come. More... Her signs trailed off, and Khida's hands came to her shoulders, miming pulling a hood up over her head. "A hood. Can you add one to this?"

The girl had also brought trousers with her, two kinds of them. Khida accepted them, looking between the two with relative indifference. She set one aside and slid the other, the fitted pair, on under the dress. By eye, examined while holding the skirt up out of the way they seemed unremarkable; by feel, perhaps not. Khida took one step and another, feeling the material catch in ways she wasn't used to. No, not these, a decision which came quick but sure, echoed in expression and manner.

The other, then.

Upon her return, the bird woman added another strange request to the growing list of things. A hooded vest? She would look like a player from the theater with all her eccentricities. She was skeptical of the idea, but she was certainly capable of doing so.

I can make She signed with a short nod. A more normal progression followed, Khida trying on the pants, and Rue took the moment of opportunity while she examined the fit of the pants to fix the hem of the dress.

Pins entered the cloth at the woman's hands, marking the height, and she followed it around the cloth. Six pins total took her only a matter of ticks, her hands falling away as the other woman began to walk.

She almost laughed at the expression that quickly overtook the woman's face. She did not care for the fitted pants- at all. Though they sat well on her hips. The other pair would do, size wise.

Colors? Rue posed the question vaguely, offering to remake the entire lot to the woman's preference. Otherwise she would take maybe a felted zibri base in the dress. No need to dye it, the golden tan tones would suit the woman. A chestnut color for the pants, subtle, not to attract attention, but to compliment her all the same.

A matching hood for the vest would be the easiest of the items, and though she didn't imagine it would fit, it would at least not clash with the rest of her clothing.

Rue held up three fingers to the woman, "Can have three days. Yes?"

The red-haired girl crowded close, pins in hand, binding up the unwanted skirt. She looked amused at one point, but Khida paid little heed. They had settled on clothes which would suit her better than the old robe; that was the important thing.

Colors, the other asked, to which Khida blinked, pausing in the process of shedding the tested garments. Colors? Hunt, her fingers signed. "Ground colors. Grass colors." She didn't, by the tone of her voice, really care which particular shades. Fortunately, that seemed to be answer enough for the girl.

Three days, the girl finished with. "Three days," Khida affirmed with a nod. "I will find this tent then." She'd come back later to learn its appearance from above. Then, if the Drykas decided to move between now and then, she'd still be able to find it. But someday, she would figure out how the Drykas found their way around at ground level.

For now, she shrugged back into her robe, collected her kill, and continued on her search for the current location of Hunter's Allegiance. And three days later, Khida did indeed return to collect her new possessions.

Notes:
So first off I enjoyed the thread it was short and to the point. No reason to beat around the bush. Secondly I have to say I really enjoyed the interaction between the two, I found Khida's reactions to a lot of the clothing to be funny and Rue thinking that Khida was going to run around without pants made me giggle like a school girl. I will say though that basic knowledge of a language lets you form sentences but not use really extravagant words. Other then that it was a fun thread to read and I look forward to reading more from each of you. :)

If you have been pelted too severely by grades and or rain and are seeking shelter, advice, or something I may have missed, let me know :)
