Veladra was useless.

It wasn’t that she didn’t already know this, she thought as she walked, it was just she had not realized how useless until now. Though he had gotten them a group to go with, which was technically something. But he was no help around camp as far as she could tell and he was no help when she was tired either. She rubbed her arms to warm herself and hoped he fell off one of the mountains.

The group they were with was a happy group. Adventurers from Northern Kalea with delusions of grandeur who kept happily chatting about looking for a way to climb Wind Reach. Somehow or other they had ended in Kalinor. Lucky for the woman that she was barren or Sosicly doubted they would have left as nicely as they’d came. There were four of them, not including Sosicly and Veladra. Three men (Tanyor, Mikal, John) and one young woman (Jenis), all human from what she knew who seemed to have no problem escorting the Symenestra when Veladra explained it was only a gift for his sister, nothing more sinister.

She almost wished it were as they walked the uneven terrain the wind blew, cutting through the trees as if they were not there, and that is all there was. Trees, hills, trees, hills, small caves, terrifying noises and Viratas only knew what else. Glaring at the back of her brother’s head she wondered how her ancestors did it with assumed ease.

The group did not stop until they had reached a decent spaced clearing, Sosicly dropping to the floor with a gasp. “You’re alright. Take a rest, and you can help me make a fire for something warm to drink.”

Veladra ignored her other than a cursory glance to ensure she was not dying, and made to help make camp while Sosicly pulled out her book to take notes and rubbed her burning chest. Kalinors clothes were not made for this weather, and she grateful when a blanket was draped around her shoulders. For a few chimes the girl sat there shaking with her book clutch in her hands, wide eyes taking in how efficiently the group worked. When her body finally settled into small shivers she pulled out her writing things and wrote small notes but not before pulling the blanket up to cover her head in a makeshift hood.

Putting up Pitching A Tent

  • Spread out tent on ground
  • Pull out corners
  • Assemble poles through the tent

“Forgot one.” A voice spoke over her shoulder, she was not surprised to recognize the voice of Jenis. Sosicly looked up at her in surprise, the woman read Symenos? “I count three. You need tarp first.”

Blinking in confusion Sosicly looked over to the campsite, realizing the woman was right. She flashed Jenis a wide, only slightly sincere smile and added it in. Trying to see what else she had missed. So she couldn’t read it, she thought it was a bit of a pity.

Putting up Pitching A Tent

  • Spread out tent on ground
  • Pull out corners
  • Stake four corners of tent tightly firmly
  • Spread out tarp before spreading out tent
  • Put front pole in place
  • Put stake in front of tent, farther away from door
  • Use rope to attach front pole with the previous stake
  • Repeat the previous with the back pole.
  • Push the stakes in the ground
  • Firm up lines to make roof
  • Stake three pegs on each side of tent a little bit away
  • Use rope to attach the stakes to tent and firm up ropes as needed to finish tent roof

Travels of a Spider I (Solo)

Sosicly felt the quill plucked out her fingers and flinched up at Jenis with a frown, who need her head towards the tent. “Head over there. I’m going to get some things then we are starting the fire. The boys are setting up the rest.” She added with a wink while Sosicly slowly packed away her things, not really wanting to get up now that she was finally able to ignore the chill.

The wind had stopped though, and now the air smelled crisp and cool, the ground crunched as she walked over to the afore mentioned area. There she resettled herself, this time pulling the blanket over her completely, and entertaining herself by seeing how well she could still see her hands.

When Jenis returned she dropped a few piles in front of Sosicly and took out a piece of steel and some flint. “Made before?”

Sosicly shook her head and eagerly plucked the pieces from the woman’s hands, she didn’t seem to mind. And Sosicly waited for instructions. Sometimes it was hard to know what Jenis was saying but the woman seemed to be fine with speaking the simplest Common she could and pointing out what Sosicly didn’t know.

“Underground fire for wind. I can dig.” She would too, considering Sosicly had no gloves. It only took a few chimes and soon there was a decent sized hole in the ground, “For breathing. Ventilation.” She elaborated.

Watching the woman dig a small connecting hole a few scant inches away. When Jenis was done she sat back and pointed to the piles, listing them and waiting for Sosicly to repeat. It was almost comforting in that it reminded her of Elyna.

“Tinder.” Jenis said and Sosicly pointed to the charred cloth, “kindling,” pointing to the twigs, “fuel.” She pointed to the dead branches and grass.

“Good girl. Now watch.”

Jenis held the flint in one hand, the steel in the other. Over the flint she laid the small piece of charred cloth then brought the steel down on the edge of the flint in quick motions until there was a little red in the corner. Showing it to Sosicly she then pressed it out and set it to the side. “You do next but first, this.”

Taking the kindling she made a messy bundle then pulled it apart and handed the kindling to Sosicly gesturing for her to do the same. With chilled, shaky fingers the girl did, pushing, pulling and squishing the shaving into a small-deformed nest. Then she was handed the flint and steel, the nest plucked from her fingers and set aside.

“Light it.”

It was not as easy as Jenis made it look.

The first strike missed and drove into her knee, sure to leave a bruise, and left her gasping in quiet pain while Jenis rubbed her back soothingly.

The second repeated the first.

The third hit her own wrist, the fourth her fingers.

The fifth managed to zing off the flint but the spark ignored the cloth stubbornly. Finaly realizing she should hold her hands a bit closer, Sosicly tried again, pleased when it made contact. Jenis forestalled her next attempted and mimed holding the two pieces. “With your wrist, flicks.”

With a nod, Sosicly did as instructed, this time again there was sparks.

“Quicker. Harder.”

After a dozen more tries Sosicly seen the small red spot but in her excitement drop the charred cloth. Jenis was quick to put it out with a bit of her water bottle and produced another piece of cloth. “Next time. Hold the kindling.”

Pouting but doing as she was told Sosicly held the pseudo nest, and with only a few strikes Jenis was dropping the cloth into the nest. “Fold it!”

Sosicly did, wheezing when it heated her fingers too quickly.

“No! With the corners.” Sosicly adjusted her grip, “Now blow. Lightly.”

While Sosicly watched in a mixture of fascination and horror as small flames licked towards her fingers, Jenis dropped some fuel in the hole. Then she tapped the nest from Sosicly’s fingers, pushing it quickly into there fire hole, and added a bit more kindling and fuel.

“Good job. We’re done. Go get in the tent before your fingers fall off.”

Not sure if Jenis was joking or if they really would with how they stung now Sosicly fairly dove into the tent. Taking comfort in bundling herself up in the blanket once more. Tomorrow she would try again and she wasn’t sure if that pleased her or not but she bet her brother still couldn’t light one still. After all Veladra was useless.

Lores: Veladra is useless, Kalinor clothes are not made for cold Weather, Pitching a Tent, Lighting a Fire, Starting an underground Fire

Notes: Since the thread was so short, I couldn’t give you a lot of XP. The lores should come in handy when Sosicly is leaving Kalinor though.
If there any issues with the way I graded this, send me a PM!
