Appearance
Race: Human Gender: Male Age: 24 Birthday: 15, Fall, 489 AV Birthplace: Syliras Nicknames: Nathan, Nate Appearance: Nate stands at 5'11" in height, and weighs in at 150 pounds. He has short-cropped brown hair and brown eyes, and usually sports a small beard. While he is not overly muscular, Nate tends to be in good shape, as he spends much of his time hunting in the wilds around Syliras. The only prominent mark on Nate's body is a horizontal scar across his right bicep, courtesy of the accident that claimed his father's life. He tends to dress conservatively, in pain shirts and pants, since as a hunter he needs clothes that allow him to remain mobile. |
Character ConceptNathaniel Deveraux is, at first glance, a fairly irreverent man. He tends to joke a lot, doesn't seem to take anything seriously, and often tends to be sarcastic about a lot of things. He is fairly disdainful of those he feels has no business being in authority, and is certainly not the type to give deference unless such deference is earned. "If I have to shoot twice at something, I've made a mistake." However, Nate can be quite serious when the need calls for it. Depending on the severity of the wound, Nate can either be joking or extremely focused when acting in the capacity of a medic. In addition, he does not joke around during a hunt; the danger out there is very real, as he's learned through painful experience in the past. And of course, following the death of his parents, he had to raise his twin sisters alone, without any outside assistance, and can be serious with them when a serious situation crops up. Nathaniel is, essentially, both a hunter and a field medic. As a hunter, he hopes to become fairly proficient in tracking and killing medium-sized game on the order of wolves and foxes, and at least capable of bringing down the occasional large game such as bears. He does this mainly with his shortbow, although he does train in the use of his father's Kukri in the event his quarry gets uncomfortably close. "The most fundamental tenant of medicine: first, do no harm." As a field medic, Nate is mainly focused on the three S's: Sanitize, Sterilize, and Stabilize. He is not a doctor, working in a sterile environment, nor is he a Healer of Rak'keli, using magic to close wounds. Rather, he specializes in emergency first-aid, cleaning and binding up of wounds, dressing them so they did not go septic, and otherwise using stopgap measures so that someone injured in the field could survive long enough to reach proper medical attention. He supplements this emergency first-aid with Herbalism, and strives to know as many of the local flora he can so that he can use nature to assist in stabilizing a patient long enough to reach safety and treatment. |
Character History
Nathaniel's father was a hunter, and a pretty good one. When his mother was teaching the girls to sing and cook and other such things, his father was bringing Nate out to hunt, teaching him how to track, kill, clean, and skin various animals around the Sylira region. Nate's sarcastic personality had not fully developed at that time; he was a much more serious person and usually only said something sarcastic or irreverent when out of earshot of his parents.
In the Spring of 505 AV, Nate's father brought him out to what would become a very fateful hunting trip. Nate refuses to talk about the specifics of that trip, but what is known is that they had gone out a bit further from the city than was normally considered safe, and had encountered a large pack of wild animals. The exact details are fuzzy, but by the time the Syliran Knights had found Nathan, he was sporting several nasty cuts and bruises across his entire body, and a large gash across his right bicep. His father was in much worse shape.
Although the Knights tried to move Nate's father to Syliras to be treated, he died en-route. Ever since that fateful night, Nate's mother began her slow decline into oblivion, and his sisters changed dramatically as well. And, in truth, so did Nate himself. Nathaniel began study of medicine the very next day, focusing on field medicine that could be used to extend a victim's life in the absence of a dedicated medical facility. And his sarcasm, once reserved for only rare occasions, now came to the forefront as he used it to deal with the pressure of being both the man and primary breadwinner of the family.
Although he never really showed it, when his mother died the Winter of that same year, it hit Nathan very hard. Despite her declining health (and eventual death of pneumonia), her presence kept the girls in line. Without either of his parents to help, Nate was forced into the role of protector, father, and brother. And despite the fact that Katarina nearly drove him crazy, acting out more and more often, he became very devoted to both her and Lea. They were the only family he had left. |
