Once more, Vanari followed Kawa's lead, long past being embarrassed at her ineptitude. For her whole life she had been accustomed to being better, being older, being taller, because that was what was expected of her. And now, for the first time in a long time, she was utterly horrible at something.
Bringing the little flute to her lips, she mimicked Kawa's posture as best as she could, squirming a bit to sit more comfortably. Then she put her tongue against the roof of her mouth and made the "tuh" sound as she blew.
The resulting sounds were a series of rather pitiful, spitty noises, but at least she was making some noise now instead of no noise at all.
"I made a sound!" Vanari beamed, knowing full well how ridiculously tiny of a step that was but enthused nonetheless. "I'll get this, I swear, if it's the last thing I do."
For the next few chimes, she blew over and over again into the flute using Kawa's trick, wincing now and then but completely undeterred. Her brow was furrowed in effort and she rotated the flute ever so slightly in her fingers as she tried different shapes with her mouth, struggling to find the right spot.
And then, like a stroke of magic, she blew forth a single, clear note that rose up into the air. She sat for a moment, stunned, then whooped in victory. "My first note! Hah, think I'm ready for a song yet?"
