As it turned out, Jorin was not always happy with the Amphitheater. Case in point, today. It should have been a really great day. Finally, the stars had aligned and Rinya had a day off on the same day that Jorin had one of his performances on stage, and she had been quite excited to finally see her mate act. And he loved to have Rinya in the audience, but he decided he wanted to treat her to something even more special, and wanted to get her backstage so she could see what the life of an actor was like.

Unfortunately, it was harder than he thought. First, the stage manager was absolutely adamant against it. "No, no, no!" he had yelled. "Absolutely not! You know how crazy it gets around here, we can't have some random outsider just wandering around. It's chaotic enough; what if she breaks something?!"

Jorin argued in vain that his mate was not so clumsy as to do that, the stage manager was adamant that no one except for approved personnel be allowed backstage during a show. He supposed the man did have a point; backstage was a very hectic place, especially during intermission and second curtain, when the relatively measured pace of first curtain inevitably gives way to disorder and chaos. Costumes being tossed on in as minimal fuss as possible, makeup being applied in record time, all to make the magical five chime mark before curtain rose again.

Still, he wanted Rinya back there, seeing him in his element, and also seeing what that element actually entailed. So he leaned on a few of the stagehands to leave the door unwatched during the initial intermission, as the audience was filing in. It was the perfect time as most of the actors were doing last-minute rehearsals, Jorin slipped away and quickly walked over to the door, looking back and forth quickly to make sure that no one had seen him do so.

He had left instructions with Rinya what their procedure would be. She was to take the smaller actor's path off the main road leading to the Amphitheater (Jorin was sure she'd know what route he was talking about, since she'd flown over it enough times), and knock twice. If she did, he would open the door and sneak her in; once inside he was pretty sure she could wander freely. The stagehands and understudies tended to believe that anyone who already was backstage probably belonged backstage, even if they themselves had no idea who the person was.

A simple enough plan, Jorin thought, and it seemed to be working so far. No one noticed the young actor as he waited by the door, to hear the magical two knocks on it from his mate.

Day 63, Season Fall, 513 AV

Jorin was thrilled… no maybe ecstatic was more the word. Really it was hard to tell, but by the gods he felt it. Rinya finally landed a day off—okay maybe she switched days with another guard to ensure that she would get the day off—and Jorin was going to be on stage. For a season now they had been bonded, and the only thing Rinya ever saw of her mate’s acting skills were—well acting for Rhys mostly. In terms of his actual job she had never seen him in action. Every once in a while Jorin practiced a scene with her, but since she wasn’t able to read anything she couldn’t exactly help much.

Apparently however Jorin was planning on sneaking her in. As much as she tried to tell him she didn’t need anything special, he insisted on it. She was rather curious about how inner workings of the Amphitheater worked, but Rinya didn’t want to get her mate into much trouble either. But since Jorin was going through all the trouble to get her in, she figured it would be decent of her to at least look nice for him. Her peach dress was out of the question, and she didn’t have time to make a trip to Rosela’s shop either.

So really that left Rinya only one stop. She hadn’t been to the bazaar before, though she got the idea of bartering from dealing with traders, she didn’t have the time and she had plenty of Mizas to get the job done anyways. It was still a fairly warm day too, so Rinya took advantage of it, seeing as she hated to be bundled up in clothing in the first place, and winter was well on its way. And it made the shift much harder too. Still it took her several bells to find what she was looking for—perhaps she was being a little too picky.

Regardless of the shopping taking up much of her day, Rinya had dressed in her new clothing and picked her way down the path separate from the rest of the audience as Jorin directed. She was actually a little worried—Jorin wasn’t going to get in trouble for this was he? She highly doubted he would put his job on the line just to show her the behind the scenes—well mostly anyways. The only reason she agreed to the back stage idea so easily was he was just so… him. Joyful and so boyish looking, grinning at her as he tried to talk her into this idea. Rinya huffed to herself.

Stepping up to the door, Rinya nervously smoothed out her clothing. A red sleeveless blouse, ruffled all the way down, and a simple gray skirt. Nothing fancy, but it was pretty enough. Hanging over her left forearm as a leather jacket she had also bought just in case the fall air turned cool once Syna finally decended beyond the horizon. But because the skirt did not go with her work boots—poor Rosela would have shuddered Rinya was sure if she hadn’t noticed that— so she had also gotten a pair of simple black sandals. All in all, it was far better than her work clothing period.

Rinya had also pulled her hair up into a high ponytail, something she rarely did. Small sections of hair had pulled free from the ponytail, framing her face a little. There wasn’t much she could do about that, not that it really bothered her. Leaning forward, Rinya raised her right hand and knocked timidly on the only door in sight twice. And waited.

Season of Fall, Day 63, 513 AV

When Jorin opened the door he wasn't sure what to expect. In some sense, it was probable he expected to see Rinya in her normal work clothes. Which in retrospect probably didn't make a lot of sense- she rarely wore those clothes outside of, well, work. It was just that he knew she wouldn't wear the peach dress, since their little food-fight had all but ruined it, and he didn't know that Rinya even owned any other dresses. And he lived with her, so he ought to know.

So when the two soft knocks emanated from the wooden door and Jorin swung it open, his jaw practically hit the floor at what he saw. Rinya was wearing what looked to be a frilly sleeveless shirt, red with a hint of black underneath, and a short but tasteful gray skirt underneath. She was also sporting a pair of sandals, and in her arm was an overcoat. Her hair had also been done up in a ponytail, with several strands off of it framing her face in a cute manner. Overall, the clothes covered just enough to be tasteful, and yet showed just enough to be tantalizing. And tantalizing it certainly was.

Jorin found he'd lost his words again. In fact he'd lost his thoughts. For about ten ticks he just stood there rather dumbly, and he was sure Rinya could feel how... affected he was by how she looked. If she'd said anything, he missed it completely, so engrossed in his mate that he'd more or less checked out temporarily. After another tick, Jorin shook his head once to clear it and gave Rinya a sheepish grin, softly reaching out to snatch her by the waist, pulling her closer to him and, incidentally, through the doorway.

Closing the door behind her without releasing Rinya's waist, Jorin leaned in and kissed her. There wasn't anyone around anyway, and he wasn't expected onstage for another twenty chimes, and she looked like that. Truthfully, Jorin had planned to kiss her regardless. It was one of the reasons he wanted her backstage; as a mere audience member, she would have been so close, and yet so far. He couldn't nab her during intermission and enjoy a (relatively) quiet moment alone with her, he couldn't ask her what she thought of the performance so far, and he certainly couldn't do what he was doing now.

He really hadn't intended the kiss to be very intense. More of a combination of "hello" and "I love you", but her outfit rather escalated things. By the time he had broken it off, Jorin was huffing, his chest shuddering with every breath. His face had gone completely red and he could already feel the fingers of desire gripping his heart even as he tried to banish those feelings. This was bad. This was very bad. Maybe he shouldn't have asked her to come backstage after all-

"Alright everyone, places! Remember curtain in fifteen chimes! Let's get this done, people!"

The shout floated to Jorin and Rinya from somewhere to their right, and Jorin looked over almost angrily. He was almost upset that the play was interrupting his time with Rinya, when he realized why he'd called her here in the first place. Oh. Right. Watching the play. The... play? The play!

Jorin grinned energetically at Rinya as he took her hand. "Welcome to the Amphitheater, my love," he announced simply, using a broad sweeping motion of his hand to indicate the entirety of the set. There were people rushing forth now, and Jorin led Rinya to the area backstage where the actors gathered. He released her hand when they were almost there, giving her a quick peck on the cheek and lifted his left hand to her face.

"You should be able to see the show from here," he explained, as he indicated with his head the curtain that was only a few feet away. The stage hands often used it to give stage direction for actors who forgot their lines, or other such things.

"Don't worry about the chaos," he smiled. "It's always like that here. Just enjoy the show!"

Jorin almost bounded off, before he turned and scratched the back of his neck, blood rushing to his cheeks as he stammered out, "Oh and uhh, uhm, well... I ah, I really like that outfit of yours. It's... It's really nice..."

Jorin cursed at hmself. "It's really nice"?! What was he, five years old?! There was just something about the way Rinya's body filled out that sleeveless dress, the way her legs looked framed by that skirt, that caught his attention. And kept it. Jorin just knew it was going to be a struggle now to remember the lines. Shyke. And he'd spent the last three weeks remembering them, too.

With a final, sheepish grin, Jorin bounded off to listen to the stagemaster give his final pep talk before the play began in earnest. And all of a sudden, for the first time ever as he looked back one last time at his mate, Jorin found that he couldn't wait for it to end.

Day 63, Season Fall, 513 AV

Rinya’s nerves were getting the best of her. The moment her second knock ended she glanced behind her, almost as though she was being watched. She knew it was silly—she should really act like she belonged there. Looking suspicious was just going to raise questions but she couldn’t help it. She almost felt as though she was trying to break into the Amphitheater. The moment the door swung open, Rinya whirled around to face it and—of course—Jorin stood there like he promised.

Only he looked a little… shocked? He wasn’t just looking at her face, but her clothing and she glanced down at it. Had she over done it—or maybe not enough? It was hard to tell really. ”Jorin? What’s wrong?” She whispered at him, eyebrows furrowed slightly. He didn’t seem to hear her either. And then she felt it, the niggling that maybe she had over done her outfit, but not so much for anyone else. He liked the way she looked, and honestly it took her a little by surprise. Not that he would like it so much, but that she hadn’t been trying.

After several long ticks that felt more like chimes, Jorin reached out with a sheepish grin and pulled her in through the doorway by her waist. There was the resounding thud of the door closing behind her, but she didn’t have time to really notice. Jorin didn’t waste any time connecting their lips together. It was intense and nearly overwhelming, so she did the only thing she could. Kiss him back and try to keep up with his shifting emotions. Despite being hidden in the back of the Amphitheater, Rinya could feel both their desire flare up and she bit back a groan. This was not the plan. Did they even have one?

He broke the kiss only moments before she would have—the need to breathe had made her lungs begin to ache. Trying to catch her own breath, Rinya stared up at him. He was clearly as affected as she was and for a tick she forgot they were here for a reason. "Alright everyone, places! Remember curtain in fifteen chimes! Let's get this done, people!" Rinya quite literally jumped in his arms. Right… people were here—expecting a play.

"Welcome to the Amphitheater, my love," Jorin motioned the theater around them and Rinya resisted the urge to roll her eyes. They had been here before, though granted she never saw the inside, just the stage. But he had shifted emotions again, looking more like a boy who wanted to show her a new toy than the man who tried to kiss her senseless. She let him lead her through the throng of people trying to prepare for the show. She was actually amazed at how many people fit back here.

Jorin released her hand, and Rinya immediately looked up at him. "You should be able to see the show from here," Rinya did her best to smile at him. She wanted to say something to him… anything really. But with the noise from the audience outside, to the people getting ready—and honestly she was still slightly dazed by kiss. He stroked her face, making it much easier for her to smile genuinely at him. "Don't worry about the chaos, it's always like that here. Just enjoy the show!"

Jorin released her face and Rinya wondered if no one would actually realize that she wasn’t supposed to be here. At the last moment, he turned back to face her, stuttering out in a rather adorable way, that he liked her outfit. And of course she flushed slightly under the compliment. ”Uhm… thank you. I thought I should at least look nice. It’s technically my first play and all.” Her first play, and also the first one that he would be in… she rather liked having both rolled into the same category. As Jorin finally turned to go join the rest of his fellow actors, Rinya realized she had forgotten one thing.

”Jorin! Good luck!” She said it as loud as she dared, still desperately trying not to draw attention to herself for both their sakes. But being left alone and waiting for the play to start made her nervous. She tugged on end of her ponytail over her left shoulder, nibbling on her bottom lip. It kept her focused so she didn’t worry as much. Jorin didn’t need her nerves on top of his own.

Season of Fall, Day 63, 513 AV

Jorin had felt RInya jump in his arms when the stage master called for places. Apparently, she'd been as surprised as he when that loud shout came floating on over to them. He suspected like him, she'd been so lost in the feelings their kiss had stirred up that they'd both forgotten why they were there. And she had blushed prettily when he'd complimented her attire, something Jorin felt made her even more endearing.

"Uhm… thank you. I thought I should at least look nice. It’s technically my first play and all." Jorin couldn't help the warmth that filled his heart. She'd clearly dressed up for him, so that she'd look nice when she appeared here at the theater, something he didn't think she would do. Honestly he wouldn't have had any problems with Rinya showing up in her normal work clothing; he happened to think she looked plenty good even in a simple tunic and pants, hair tousled from a day of being at the Warrens. But it touched him deeply to know she cared enough to go out specifically to find something nice to wear. And nice it certainly was.

"Jorin! Good luck!" Rinya shouted, and the murmur of conversation hushed significantly at the words. Despite the tension in the room, Jorin grinned back at Rinya and just nodded, sending calming feelings to Rinya to assure her all was well. Rinya didn't know it, but theater people were quite superstitious, and it was considered bad luck to wish someone good luck. The usual phrase was "break a leg!" but of course, Rinya would not have known that. Jorin just hoped he didn't actually break a leg this performance. That would be quite embarrassing. Also painful.

But there simply wasn't time to do more than to try to use their bond to reassure her she hadn't done anything terribly wrong. Theater folk were awfully superstitious, but it was just a silly superstition anyway. There was no way that wishing him luck would cause him to have bad luck, like forgetting his lines... could they? Jorin felt the beginnings of a cold sweat drip down his back, but he willed it to disappear. Now wasn't the time for panic. He'd been an actor for nearly an entire season! What was wrong with him?!

Jorin stepped up to receive his final notes on his performance. He was second billing, again, but at least this time he did not play the part of the villain. Instead, he played the part of the best friend of the main character, a soldier in the Suvan army during the Valterrian. It was a tale of bravery, tragedy, and broken hearts-- in other words, the usual fare of love and war. But then, weren't all stories based on either love or war?

"OK, Jorin, we're going to need your best on this one," the stage master cautioned. Jorin almost rolled his eyes. Well of course. As if he'd give any less on a performance in front of a live audience. But he understood; doing well in second billing could bump him to top billing, which would be a prestige well-worth aiming for. Thus far that honor had eluded him but tonight might be the night he'd achieve it. He would certainly try.

The actor delivering the prologue to their play had just completed, meaning the first scene was about to start. Jorin stared nervously at his hands, willing them to stop shaking. He was fine! He was just fine... he just needed to concentrate.

"We've been marching for over a day, sir," gasped one of the actors playing a soldier. The main character, an older actor with sandy blonde hair and a sharp and well-defined nose, merely glared at him.

"The day may be harsh, but our enemies do not wait," he replied, eyes sharp as they "marched" forth. Turning to Jorin, he nodded at the soldiers behind them. "The hours do grow long, though, old friend," he confided, in an aside meant to only be heard by Jorin and the audience. "What say you? Camp or nay?"

In truth, Jorin had been barely listening. All he could think of was Rinya. Rinya's hips swaying in that lovely outfit, her blush tinging her cheeks just so. It was hard to concentrate on anything else, especially since he could feel her, oh so close. He literally could walk fifteen paces and could touch her with his hand, could kiss her as she stood so close to him. He'd almost missed his cue, but he recovered with a start, which he was able to hide with a shrug, and replied, "I say nay, commander." He glanced up at the "stars". "Out legs may be weary but our hearts are stout. And we must reach the pass before our enemies do."

There... there was another line after that. Jorin knew this, but he had blanked on it. Petch! How could he have forgotten his lines in the very first ten chimes of the play?! He could feel panic bubbling up in his chest, and he knew Rinya could feel it too. He tried to push it down. The show had to go on. "Though I know not if our men can brave the winds," he added. It was a low-cost delaying tactic, to give him time to remember his lines. And the lead actor, a veteran at the art, seemed to understand, hefting himself and "signalling" the small "unit" to stop.

-------

Actors forgetting their lines was not that common an occurrence. Plays were planned out sometimes seasons in advance in order to give them sufficient time to memorize their lines. And Jorin was a very reliable actor, and rarely ever flubbed a line. So it was with some confusion of the understudies when one had been dispatched to provide stage direction to the usually solid actor.

The understudy was young, and looked it; he had a boyish sort of charm to him, with wavy black hair, and a smoky, intense gaze that often landed him the understudy position for either the lead or the love interest of the main actress. The man's easy smile and friendly demeanor meant he often hung around after the show, jawing off with stagehands, understudies, and actors alike.

But today he was being assigned to a duty he didn't usually have, so he hurried to the actor's box with the stage directions. Normally, actors would have certain hand-signals for certain stage directions. It was, in a sense, quite like Pavi, where certain hand signs referred to certain actions the actor should take during the scene. It had to be hand signs, since obviously they could not shout it out to them and break the scene. As he read up to where they were in the play - only the first scene?! - he noticed something new. Or rather, ne noticed someone new.

She was a pretty little thing, dressed in quite a provocative outfit, really. Red frills went all the way down her sleeveless shirt, showing off her petite but toned frame nicely, and his eyes trailed down her side to her simple but effective gray skirt, and further down her legs. Definitely a pretty little thing. But what was she doing there? He'd never seen her before. Deciding to get to know her, he sidled up to her side and tapped her on the shoulder.

"Well, hello there gorgeous, you new here?" he stage whispered, as he signaled out the next scene to Jorin, as he'd been directed to. He turned to Rinya and gave her a wink. "We're having an after-party afterwards, you wanna go with me?" he suggested, with one of his smiles. It usually worked to get him at least a first date. And why not? She didn't look like she was doing anything anyway, and he figured they could both have some fun.

Day 63, Season Fall, 513 AV

Rinya was honestly used to feeling Jorin’s emotions before a play. Usually however she was at the Warren patrolling, and she could only guess what Jorin looked like as he prepared. Panic was generally not an emotion she felt from him though. It was very faint and only obvious because she was so focused upon him in the first place, but it was there—weaving in and out of the rest. For a few ticks he seemed distracted again, as the stage master spoke to him… at least she thought he was the stage master. She really couldn’t tell, but everyone seemed to be listening to him so it was a fair guess.

Rinya sighed as she shifted from foot to foot slightly. There wasn’t much she could do at this point, but stand and wait for the play to start. And observe Jorin prepare. It wasn’t often that she got to stand back and just watch him. He almost always caught her staring when she did get the chance. Like lying in his bed as he wrote in his poem book, or even just getting ready for the day. Usually she slept in later than he did since Jorin often went to practice quarterstaff early in the morning. She tried to observe him then, it was a natural habit for her, but he always caught her.

From here, she could still clearly see his form. A natural grace to his movements, even with his nerves occupying his mind. She didn’t have to read his mind to know he was preparing to give this everything he had—he always did. And that in her opinion was made him a wonderful artist. He could have been terrible—not that he was, even though she had never seen him act. In some ways she considered it instinctual. She had faith in her mate it was just that simple. Actually it was hard not to have faith in Jorin period. He was that kind of person. Inspirational.

"We've been marching for over a day, sir," Rinya jerked out of her rather in-depth ogling of her mate to realize the play had actually started. She blushed lightly, not that anyone was going to see it. She was supposed to be paying attention, and instead she was focusing solely on Jorin. Which normally wouldn’t be a bad thing, but she did want to actually know what the play was about before Jorin’s part came it.

From observance the play already appeared to be about soliders, marching to somewhere. For her it was a little hard to picture without Jorin’s help. Art was not something she was interested in before, so to her the men on the stage just looked kind of ridiculous. The lead character deferred to Jorin and Rinya’s interest piqued. He had been studying for the play for some time—something about being second billed… she had no idea what that meant.

Perhaps to her—because she knew him so well—Rinya recognized that Jorin was already distracted. Something was on his mind, though she had no idea what. "Out legs may be weary but our hearts are stout. And we must reach the pass before our enemies do." There was a shot of panic and Rinya frowned. Something was wrong, though outwardly she couldn’t quite tell. Whatever it was, nothing really seemed to stop with the play either, so Rinya tried a tactic that they usually reserved for the other when either was greatly upset.

Or at least—she would have. "Well, hello there gorgeous, you new here?" Rinya’s face shot to face the voice next to her. His hands moved in an odd series of gestures that made no sense to her, but the boy seemed entirely focused on her. "We're having an after-party afterwards, you wanna go with me?" Rinya couldn’t help but cock an eyebrow. In the back of her head there were several ways she could handle this.

One—be her usual blunt self and tell the boy off… only that might give away that she shouldn’t be here. Two—Let the boy try to charm his way to… whatever it was he was attempting and running from him first chance she got. Again, that left her in the obvious ‘does not belong’ category. Sighing inwardly, she kept her face neutral and let her eyes fall back on Jorin. ”New… yes. But I am afraid I will probably not be around for the after-party...” It wasn’t a lie per say but Rinya dreaded the thought of having this boy follow her around.

Glancing at him out of the corner of her eye, Rinya shrugged. ”What is it that you’re doing with your hands?” Curiosity got the better of her really. Looking back at the stage, Rinya focused on her feelings… a sense of calm and easy. And she tried project it as best she could towards Jorin. He himself was good at it—calming her—but Rinya wasn’t sure she could do it herself. Especially since trying to keep the mild annoyance next to her out of the emotions.

Season of Fall, Day 63, 513 AV

It was not a very common occurrence that Jorin would be unable to remember his lines. He hadn't had a mind blank this severe since his days with the Thespians. Oh if only Eric were here now, what an earful he'd be getting. In any case his improvised line had been sufficient to move the scene along. It was clearly the wrong line, but then the other actors appeared to be working with him to move the play in the general direction it was supposed to be going.

Jorin was noticing the measured but quick hand signs being sent by the understudy in the actor's box where Rinya was standing. He could tell from Rinya's curious expression that she had no clue what the boy was doing, but it did not really matter; the signs were meant for him anyway. Theater hand-signs were primarily intended to offer broad-stroke guidance, and right now the signals being sent to him indicated Jorin needed to keep the conversation going, and a downward thrust, palm facing upward, meant that he was supposed to take his cue from the lead actor on where to bring the close. Right.

Simultaneously, Jorin felt a strange sense of calm settle over him, and he realized it was coming across the bond from Rinya. She was trying to calm him down, and it was certainly a big help since the panic of forgetting his lines was quickly being replaced with the strength he was deriving from his mate. Rinya was here. Nothing could go wrong. Besides, the play was continuing, and all the actors and stagehands and understudies knew that breaking the scene was the absolute worst thing they could do.

Standing up, Jorin began pacing the stage, declaring how dangerous the mission was and how difficult it would be for them to actually succeed in their mission. The soldiers around him rumbled in agreement, and the lead actor put a quick stop to this mini-mutiny by reminding them of their duty to the Suvan empire. Not that it would really matter, he bitterly mused, to Jorin "privately", as they were being sent to die anyway.

Even as that conversation was occuring, Jorin couldn't help but look over at where Rinya was. It was a slight break in character, which he masked as the character looking aside in sympathy to the commander's plight. That understudy... Jorin knew him of course. He was always a bright kid, only a year or so younger than himself, but looking much younger. His boyish charm apparently earned him the squealing approval of several of the actresses, which Jorin himself found both tiresome and fairly earsplitting. Nonetheless, he found the boy to be fairly pleasant, if somewhat overeager at times. But at the moment he was also feeling a twinge of annoyance from Rinya. What exactly was the boy saying to her?

But he could not keep staring back at Rinya. He was already doing it a tad too much as it was, since the boy was giving the obvious hand signal of "eyes back on scene" repeatedly. Jorin nodded in response to the commander's musings, asking whether the commander had someone back home. The commander snorted in response, turning the question back on Jorin, who just shrugged and said, "Doesn't everyone?"

The commander asked him then why he joined the Suvan army. And Jorin felt a strange kinship to the line he gave next. Even though they were the lines he'd memorized for a play they were strangely relevant. And he was quite certain, if he himself had been in a similar situation, he might well have delivered similar lines.

"I joined because of her, commander," he replied, the passion in his voice both acted and real. "To keep her safe. What better reason could there be? What better motivation could a man have?"

The commander pointed out that Jorin could well die on this mission. In fact, they were all likely to die. Jorin shrugged, giving a forced grin. "Better me than her," he concluded, voice somewhat shaky.

--------

The young understudy was undeterred by Rinya's apparent dismissal of his offer. If she was a new understudy, stationed here to observe the masters at work, then clearly she would have to be at the afterparty later. Even if she claimed she wouldn't be, most Amphitheater employees ended up showing up anyway, if only for the free food, free alcohol, and occasional uproarious laughter.

Grinning slightly at Rinya when she asked about his hand signs, he turned to her a bit and said, "Well, they're stage signals." When he realized that she still didn't know what he was talking about, he frowned a bit. What sort of understudy didn't even know what stage signals were? But then he realized he had an excellent chance to get closer to this pretty young girl.

Taking both her left hand in both of his, he began by sweeping low and leaning forward to kiss it, before releasing it and standing behind her, and leaned in a bit.

"Well, perhaps I could teach you the signs," he whispered in her ear, as he leaned in close, looking to wrap his arms around her to grab her wrists from behind. As far as he was concerned, it was a win-win situation. She would get to learn some of the signs she was asking about, and he got to put his arms around a pretty girl, and who knows? Maybe she might be so grateful she'd change her mind about that afterparty later.

Day 63, Season Fall, 513 AV

Rinya felt almost a little lost. Jorin was looking at her, and the boy next to her just kept repeating the same motions over and over at him. It took a tick, but Jorin finally moved his eyes and Rinya sighed softly. She dearly hoped she wasn’t messing this up for him. Something told her the next time she had time for one of his plays, she would certainly have to remain in the audience like everyone else. Like most things, they were a distraction to one another. And this was not the time for him to be distracted.

Rinya herself was trying to focus on the play as it was. Jorin and the lead character were carrying on about having someone back at home… someone worth fighting for. "I joined because of her, commander, to keep her safe. What better reason could there be? What better motivation could a man have?" The sense of sincerity was quite strong—it was something Jorin obviously agreed with on a personal level. Though she would highly doubt that she would ever allow Jorin to go to war… at least not without her. The idea of being protected was nice—but they belonged together. Better to die together than wait for Jorin and their bond to be ripped away from her out of the blue—like losing everything one could hold dear in one fell swoop without warning.

"Better me than her," Rinya smiled slightly. Knowing Jorin he would be dead set against her going to war with him either way. Honestly she didn’t want to imagine what the loss of life would do to Jorin—especially if it might be by his hand. Rinya huffed after a moment. She was focusing on all the wrong things again. She was supposed to be enjoying the story and all she could do was find similarities and—

"Well, they're stage signals." Oh right. He was still there. Rinya resisted the urge to frown at the boy. He too was actually frowning and she realized her slip up much too late. She shouldn’t have asked about the hand signals. But either way the boy didn’t seem to think much of it. He just snagged her left hand between his and in a flourish that was similar to Jorins—though she preferred her mate’s bow much better—kissed her hand. The action was just… wrong. She bit her tongue and was about to yank her hand back to her side before he released it and moved behind her.

This was even worse! "Well, perhaps I could teach you the signs," From Jorin, Rinya was sure desire would have filled her with the whispered words. The action was intimate between the two, so having this boy in her ear was just…uncomfortable. He obviously did not get the idea before that she didn’t want anything to actually do with him. Her mind reeled with ways to deal with this before it got worse—and not risk Jorin’s job at the same time. The boy reached around to grab her wrists and Rinya instinctively jumped, her left elbow coming in hard to the boys stomach.

It was truly a mistake, but it was one that could possibly play out well for her. Turning to face him, Rinya frowned slightly. ”I’m sorry. I don’t like to be touched. I can learn the signals later.” She used the best innocent voice she could—partly because it was true. But Rinya really didn’t know how to get the boy away from her. She couldn’t even focus on Jorin, and by now it was likely all of her nervous and jerky emotions were filtering to him. What was worse was she felt a small bit of shame on top of it all.

She should have guessed the boy was going to touch her, and that was entirely Jorin’s territory—even if he didn’t view it that way. It was how she wanted it. The whispering in her ear, there was no spark like when he did it. All she ended up doing was longing for Jorin’s presence and touch. Grumbling under her breath, she pulled out a card she never thought she’d use. But maybe it would get the boy to back off…

”I’m sorry I just… I’m more into girls—if you know what I mean.” Rinya stressed the words, and silently prayed the boy would just leave her alone.

Season of Fall, Day 63, 513 AV

The scene was interrupted by another actor running up, seemingly out of breath, announcing the arrival of the Alahean forces two days early. The commander did not act surprised, although the soldiers beneath him certainly did, and a controlled murmur rippled through them. This was not what they had planned, they growled, and the tension on the stage was beginning to rise. The commander drew himself up to full height and glared down at the men, daring them to disobey the orders from their king himself. For king and country. The soldiers of the Suvan were nothing if not loyal. The men backed down.

Jorin's character had been silent throughout this, but when it came time for him to speak, he was somewhat distracted. The grumbling amongst the men meant that the men were also milling about which mean Jorin could take the opportunity to sneak a peek back at his beautiful mate... who was being touched by that little petching understudy! Jorin couldn't help the hot flames of jealousy rise in his chest seeing the boy kiss her hand, before trying to wrap his arms around her after whispering in her ear. Who the petch did that little shyke think he was?! Even Rhys, as far as Jorin figured, didn't try that sort of thing immediately, and at least that man had the somewhat excuse of being Rinya's work-mate. This kid...

The worst thing was, he couldn't display this jealousy on-stage. Fortunately, the next scene required a bit of anger. Good. Anger he could do. Anger he could definitely do. "So we're just supposed to walk into a trap?!" Jorin asked hotly, his face red and brow furrowed, and one could practically see the dark raincloud over his head. The hot jealousy still raged in his heart, and he could feel Rinya's own discomfort and upset roiling inside with his own. He felt better knowing that she had unequivocally rejected that little shyke's advances, but still...! What was most annoying was, Jorin was fairly certain that fresh-faced young man was the one who replaced him when he had been injured in the hospital. Who said Lhex didn't have a sense of humor?

The commander seemed taken aback at Jorin's outburst, calmly explaining that orders were orders, and that obeying them was the most important thing for a soldier of the Suvan army.

"More important than tactics? More important than doing the intelligent thing? More important than winning?!" Jorin pressed, his teeth gritted as he continued to think about that stupid kid wrapping his arms around his mate. It wasn't that he didn't trust Rinya implicitly. He did. In fact, even if he hadn't seen it he was absolutely certain she'd reject the kid as firmly and completely as possible, just like he'd reject any and all advances from anyone who wasn't Rinya. But the fact that the kid would dare put his hands on her, and like that, after knowing Rinya for all of two chimes...

Jorin almost missed the commander's speech about how orders were life, and that yes, they were more important than those things, because only those in command could truly see the big picture, and those who tried to rise above their station only got hammered back down. A standard response from someone of that era, apparently, if any of the other plays set during the Valterrian was any indication. The army of the Suvan empire was very regimented, from all accounts.

"An order is pointless if it fails to achieve the goals it was given to accomplish," Jorin concluded. He did in fact agree with this sentiment, but the lead actor's character didn't. Now turning his full fury to Jorin, the actor stuck a finger into Jorin's chest and demanded that he hand over his weapon for insubordination. There was a moment of heavy tension as Jorin stared right back defiantly at his "commander", both actors using the utmost of their skill to portray a tense moment. Then, without a word, Jorin drew his wooden sword, and hurled it to the ground, before stomping off-stage, his frustration and fury only partially acted.

Oh how Jorin would love to go looking for that understudy and give him a piece of his mind. That kid only had a job because he'd begged the Amphitheater much like Jorin had begged the Thespians. In some sense one could say Jorin had given the kid a chance; he could have just as easily argued against hiring on another understudy. After all, as the man who balanced the books around the place, Jorin had the de-facto authority to claim they simply didn't have the seasonal funds to take on any new hires, and the vast majority of the Amphitheater employees would simply take his word for it. And that was how the ungrateful little petcher repaid him?

But unfortunately, Jorin was onstage for the next scene as well. He had all of twenty-five chimes, enough for a short scene between the captain and the other soldiers, before he had to be back onstage. Striding to the actor's box, Jorin wanted to just be with Rinya again. Because the emotions roiling in his gut served him well, ironically, for the scene he just did, but wouldn't for the scene he was going to do.

---------

The young understudy stumbled back a bit when Rinya struck him in the stomach with her elbow. In his youthful exuberance, he simply assumed that she did that by accident through exaggerated motion. Gods knew, they exaggerated motion enough in their art so he just assumed that was what she was doing, still under the assumption that she was a fellow understudy. To her apology and assertion that she didn't like to be touched, the young man simply grinned his easy grin at her and winked. He was sure he could change her mind about that. And she said she could learn those signals later... he could teach her then.

But then the girl said something surprising. She was into... girls? Well, he'd heard about that, but in Riverfall it was quite rare and actually considered selfish. The Akalak frowned upon women who cut themselves off from being Nakivaks in that fashion. And many such women lay with an Akalak regardless, simply to avoid the stigma. If this girl was into other girls, perhaps she'd be willing to lay with him, just to prove that she was not to be a burden to the city? Of course, him not being an Akalak could prove a problem with that plan, but one problem at a time.

"Well, nobody's perfect," the boy grinned. "Just because you're more into girls doesn't mean you can't be into guys, right?" he smirked, leaning in a bit.

"Alright, next scene's in twenty, we might need to-" Jorin froze as he arrived at the actor's box, in time to see the young understudy leaning over Rinya, one arm against the wall behind her. When the understudy caught a glimpse of Jorin, his eyes narrowed slightly. What the petch was an actor doing here? They were usually far too high-and-mighty to hang around with the understudy, even if Jorin was one of the more personable ones.

Glancing down at Rinya, he grinned. He'd seen Jorin glance over at the girl once or twice during the performance. At the time, the understudy assumed the actor was simply looking to him for further stage direction. But perhaps the pretty little thing had caught Jorin's eye too. Well too bad. He saw her first.

Taking a bold move, the understudy decided to push off the wall and wrap the arm around Rinya's waist, drawing her close to him as he grinned at Jorin and gave him a little wave. "Well hello there, Jorin!" he called out in a friendly manner, making sure his voice wasn't so loud that it could be heard on stage. "Was there something you needed with my girl?" And as the understudy said the word "my", he gave Rinya's waist a little squeeze.

Day 63, Season Fall, 513 AV

The arguing on stage over tactics seemed… pointless. Not that she was biased or anything, but Jorin’s character made a wonderful point. There was no point falling into a trap, just because orders dictated it so. And Rinya refused to believe that life should be thrown away in such a matter. But it was just a play. However, Jorin had apparently spotted the boy trying—whatever he was trying. There was a familiar hot prick of jealousy, only for once it didn’t come from her… she knew it was coming from him.

If it were any other situation, Rinya would threaten the boy. A simple but effective means in the past to getting men to—well ignore her. But it was easier than too, she dressed in neutral clothing and always had a hard set glare to accompany any threats. Right now she didn’t have much of a choice. And if there was one thing Rinya really did hate were choices being taken from her. The blame fell entirely on the boy too—Jorin had just been trying to let her see the ‘other’ side of the stage while the play was being performed. Did boys like this always flirt with the girls?

There was distraction again, and Rinya couldn’t help it. This time she frowned at the boy. On stage Jorin was arguing it out with his ‘superior’ officer over what was right, while she tried to argue with herself that hitting the boy would do no good. She could of course just act as though she had snuck into the Amphitheater and leave Jorin completely out of any trouble that could arise from it, but she wasn’t sure just how strongly the Akalak took to people ‘breaking in’. She wasn’t keen on finding out either.

"Well, nobody's perfect, just because you're more into girls doesn't mean you can't be into guys, right?" Was he serious!? Rinya gritted her teeth together as the understudy leaned forward a bit. In the back of her mind she realized Jorin wasn’t on stage anymore—another thing she missed and her anger spiked. All it would take is just one hit. Maybe kicking him in the shin too… No… no violence!

"Alright, next scene's in twenty, we might need to-" Jorin’s voice both relieved and sent fear straight to the pit of her stomach. This did not look good and Rinya suddenly wished she had just hit the boy and ran. She could always attend a different play—from the safety of the audience. Because this was entirely too stressful to put up with. The boy seemed surprised by Jorin’s entrance and Rinya took the time to try and run different scenarios through her head.

However the understudy didn’t give her a chance to even say anything. He wrapped his arm around her waist and fairly yanked her up against him. That was—unexpected. "Well hello there, Jorin! Was there something you needed with my girl?" Ew no! Just… no! Rinya squirmed against the arm almost instantly. She wanted to ask for Jorin's help, but without giving away that she didn’t belong there she couldn’t think of anything.

But an idea did pop into her mind. She hated the idea really, but women did it all the time. The fact didn’t make it any easier however. Giving a firm push from the boy to ensure she was thoroughly untangled from his arms, Rinya did her best not to run to Jorin’s side. The boy was obviously not an actor yet—and Jorin was the one on stage. If she was a vain, shallow kind of woman… well the better choice of man would obviously be the actor.

”Hello there… you were rather dashing on stage.” Well at least that wasn’t a lie. The sweetness in her voice was however. She almost felt dirty—she was acting like Farline. Of course Jorin knew she wasn’t being serious… and she latched herself onto his arm, grinning up at him like—ugh she didn’t even want to think about it. ”You know all those hand signs too don’t you? Think you can find time to teach me?” It was a silent plea—she really didn’t have any intention of learning the signals of course. She just wanted Jorin to calm down, play the part as well and maybe the boy would just get the damned idea already.
