An evening spent learning about grief

Erade tried to walk slowly through the Inner Warrens but found it incredibly hard to do so. The sun was just starting to set and her new companion, a Rook was awaiting for her in her room space. The yasi could barely hold still in class today due to her excitement. She had purchased the beautiful bird yesterday at market day and was particularly proud of herself because she managed to haggle with the seller and get 5 pinions off from her purchase. The seller had said the bird was highly intelligent and she would have to keep a careful eye on it. However Erade had a moment of stubbornness and bought the bird anyways.

Etaolle, as the teen named her, was a medium size bird with deep black color feathers that often times have a bluish sheen to them in bright sunlight. She looks a lot like a crow except for the grey-white skin around the base of its beak and the feathers on its legs tend to look scruffier.

It had taken her two trips from the Courtyard in the Sky and the help of a dek that was close by to transport everything she would need for the touchy bird. Etaolle was known as a passenger in falconry terms, due to being able to fly but still in its first year plumage. The seller told Erade that the owl has been 'manned' so that was a step she didn't have to worry about, thank the gods. The yasi decided getting her use to a hood and perhaps to come to her arm would be a good start for both a beginner falconer and a newly caught bird.

Upon arrival to her little room she was not happy with what she saw. Noralth, her nightingale, was sitting on top of the mews singing away to Etaolle. Erade was sure the little songbird was welcoming the night and the new companion alike. The Rook however was clearly not enjoying the song or his voice for that matter and was croaking at him in return and attempting to eat him through the special cage. Well what did she expect when she tried to house two birds, one predator and one prey in one little small room. If this keeps up she might have to buy a cage for Noralth, so he could stop 'tormenting' the black bird, and before he pushed her too far and the end result being just one bird remaining. The teen was pretty sure it wouldn't be Noralth.

Waving the pesky nightingale off the mews and out of her room, Erade got to work. As much as she enjoyed his company and singing, the yasi didn't need any distractions nor did Etaolle. She set the pieces of raw meat down, that she just picked up from the kitchen, on a small table. The teen had managed to persuade a fellow yasi to give her two pieces of raw chicken. In exchange she had to give up her own dinner to the yasi. Well worth it.

Erade grabbed the hood, and her sontav. Next part would be tricky, the yasi was unsure how the bird would react to Erade being in her personal space. Etaolle was used to humans but she wasn't use to the teen. Perhaps enticing her with some of the meat she brought?

Ripping a piece of the meat off and bringing the other part with her, Erade slowly open the door. Erade talked softly, "Hey there girl. How are you tonight? Hungry I bet, well guess what? I got something for you."

The tiny girl offer the piece of meat to the black bird as a peace offering and a small way to show the teen meant no harm. Etaolle at first seemed unsure of Erade, but there was more curiosity than fear. Hunger winning over the uncertainty, the bird snapped at the meat and began to eat it. The yasi waited until she was done eating before even attempting to put the hood on, of which was not as easy as Erade had anticipated. The bird pecked and snapped at her but after a chime or two she managed to get the hood on by sliding it over her head and holding the Turk's knot on the top. Etaolle only cawed once then tried to scratch it off.

The teen didn't blame Etaolle, she would probably be rather upset if someone randomly came and threw something over her head. In the end though it will benefit them both. Keep her calm and keep Erade calm as well because she wouldn't have to worry about the black bird hurting herself or something worse. Erade offered another small piece of raw meat to calm Etaolle down. Another thing she had to take note of, not to feed her too much. The bird wouldn't be getting much exercise outside of the mews for the next couple of days due to training. The teen didn't need the rook getting too sluggish to fly however she needed Etaolle to trust her even if its a little now. Baby steps Erade.. Dont rush the bird."

The bird seemed somewhat placid now that it had something in its stomach. It was even tolerating the hood more too. Erade had to agree any Inartan mellowed out with some good food or sex but that was besides the point.

A day spent training

Postby Erade on October 25th, 2013, 2:14 am

Etaolle was currently tethered by means of the jesses so Erade had no fear of her flying off, or at least too far. She was unsure how long she should keep the hood on the rook. The teen knew it didnt hurt or harm the bird or its feather by wearing it. Most falconers trained their birds to hunt on cue by once the hood was removed. Erade was unsure how well that might work with the owl, but hoped to get to that point one day. Training methods will have to be by trial and error it seems and hoped it wont be too many errors.

Leaving the hood on for a bell or two shouldn't be too bad as a first go. Gathering the extra jesses in her last three fingers, she placed the modified leather piece to her sontav, that would protect the rest of her hand. Normally she used it as bracer for when she used her bow but now the yasi had a chance to use it for its true purpose and it made her all the more excited. Erade encouraged the black bird onto her wrist, guiding it in a way since it was unable to see due to the hood. Etaolle's talons were sharp but didn't pierce the supple leather of her sontav. She was ready for it but wasn't expected the actual weight of the bird. It wasn't particularly heavy but Etaolle had some weight to her that Erade would definitely have to get use to.

The rook moved around a bit on her wrist to get its bearings of what was now seemed like an unsteady branch. Something of which Etaolle didn't like and attempted to find one that was more sturdy. Erade wasn't expected her to move so and almost let go of the only thing that kept her from flying off, the jess.

"For a bird of your size you sure are powerful." Erade said while frowning at the bird. She managed to steady her arm enough where the black bird didnt feel uncomfortable anymore. Etaolle swiveled her head from side to side, clearly trying to listen through the hood. Something Erade might have to remedy if the bird still didn't calm down from being over stimulated.

After about 30 chimes, the yasi slid the leather head piece off. She had spent the time, coaxing the rook onto her gloved hand and working on steadying her arm more. Etaolle blinked slowly, once again taking in her surroundings. Erade couldn't help but smile at the bird, she didn't know why the shopkeeper said the bird was unruly because she seemed willing to learn and was demonstrating promise. Famous last words..

Now that the black bird could clearly see and put sounds to objects she was highly aware. She swiveled her head to the entrance of the room, hearing and seeing something before Erade could. It was her little songbird, Noralth who had decided to choose this very moment to come back into the room. Etaolle was apparently a vindictive bird and was not one to live and forget. Acting on instinct, the predator switched to hunting mode. She launched off of Erade's arm, ripping the jesses from her too loose fingers from letting her guard down, and headed straight for the little songbird.

An evening learning about grief

Postby Erade on October 25th, 2013, 5:15 am

Erade wasn't so lucky in holding the jesses this time. They easily slipped through her fingers in the confusion that quickly escalated. Trying to grab them in mid air as they daggled from the rook's leg was hard for the short girl. Noralth didnt realized what happened before it was too late. Etaolle quickly swooped down on the nightingale and ending his life just as quickly. There was no time to react, only time to scream in horror as she watch her best friend be killed before her eyes.

The yasi sank to the floor in shock, everything was moving in slow motion now. Clearly it all had to be a horrible dream and she were to wake up any tick now. Right? Etaolle was carrying back her kill, what was left of Noralth to her. Her wings flapped slowly and seemed to slow down even further. If Erade wasn't in such a state of shock she might have appreciated the gracefulness of the mighty hunter but not tonight.

They say you will always remember your bird's first kill. This was not how she had imagine it, much less be her sweet songbird. She had wished to train the rook to hunt once the hood came off and she had gotten what she wished for. 'Be careful what you wish for' as they always say.

The tears began to flow from the teen's face as Etaolle perched on her arm, with Noralth in its claws. She couldn't move, all she could do was cry and blame herself for being stupid. The rook was within her skill range but she truly didn't know what she was doing past the basics. None of this would have happened if she wouldn't been stubborn and heeded the shop keepers warnings. Erade should have known better, in all of her excitement she should have found a proper teacher or found proper protection for her brown companion.

Erade didn't move from her state of guilt until the red owl made a move to begin eating the nightingale. "NO!" she screamed, snatching the ruffled mess of her friend's body from Etaolle's talons. The bird didnt appreciate the gesture and in return pecked Erade's hand, drawing blood. "Ouch, you stupid bird!"

Gathering the jesses in her gloved hand, she rushed backed to the mews. Etaolle cawing and flapping her wings wildly at the sudden and quick movements. As angry she was at the bird and wanted to toss her in the special cage, the yasi didn't. Erade had too much respect for the graceful hunter and was taught better than that so opted to let her glide to the perch inside and promptly closing the door behind her.

Looking down at the corpse of Noralth, the tears began to flow again. Erade unraveled the purple wrap from her hair and gingerly wrapped him up in it. It was a cycle of emotions running through her, one moment anger and the need to yell at the gods to bring him back, she was willing to do anything, then the sheer ripping feeling of sadness and loneliness. Erade was quickly going through the steps of grief apparently but whether that was a good thing or bad she was unsure, only time could tell. For now she settled on crying then burying the little bird when Syna's first rays touched the sky.

  • Enticing a bird with food
  • Falconry: Putting a hood on a bird
  • An unsteady arm makes a perched bird uncomfortable
  • Consequences of inexperience
  • Death of an old friend
  • Etaolle: Killer of Noralth

Consequences: -Noralth is dead
-A cut on the hand from a bird peck that will fully heal after 5 days if the scab isn't picked at, 8 days if it is

Notes:
You confused tenses just a little bit here, Erade. Your owl description for example, was all in the present tense when it should be in the past to be consistent. It's only a small detail though. I didn't give you the falconry term "Manning" because you didn't explain it and I actually had to look it up.

A good thread overall. Shame that Erade had to learn the hard way that she couldn't handle a bird of prey. Well done though!
