70th Day of Fall, 513 AV
Squire Dormitories, Cafeteria
12th Bell

The last ten days had felt an eternity for Orion Michaels. Another frigid reply to a seeming genuine reply. Another bridge burned. Another friend lost. Lilly Grant was out of his life just as quickly as she'd appeared. It was somewhat disappointing. She'd engaged him in a way he'd not experienced in some time. There were no expectations, except that he treat her with respect. When he didn't hold up that one simple rule, she'd left him with a slap and unkind words.

He'd gone it alone for many years. Why did that need to change now?

Orion had snagged a plate of food from the cafeteria. Some sort of nameless, tasteless mush, but at least it was free? They were provided three filling, if less than edible meals each day, but all too often Orion found himself missing those meals due to nights out and about. For awhile it seemed as though he'd managed to kick his drinking habit, but the stresses of the world had worn him down and brought him back to a familiar place. At least today he'd not waste one of the few privileges of being a squire.

The blue eyed man took a seat, paying no mind to who he was next to, instead he was staring down into the depths of the mush that was to be his dinner.

"Looks like they took out all the good parts of a meal, mixed the leftovers in a buck it, and called in lunch, huh?"

"Almost sounds like they did the same with you, hmm, Michaels?"

Blue eyes met deep brown as Orion glanced up from his meal to see none other but Lilly Grant. It would be his luck. He always seemed to run right into the women he'd scorned, and within a short time of whatever act he did to piss them off. One night stands, the horrible things he'd say when they tried to make it anything more than what it was, the way he'd just forget about anything they shared.

"Lilly." Orion nodded in greeting, but that was all he said. It was unnerving having the woman right beside him. Was she mad? Did she hate him for being so vulgar? He actually liked being around the woman, but the way she tried to dig into personal stuff was grating on his nerves. The life of a squire was one that offered little privacy as it was. To have someone digging into the little bit he had was too much to handle.

"What's wrong, Orion? You don't want to go for a romp with me anymore?" Lilly smiled at Orion, but it wasn't a friendly one. The irritation dripped from expression, the sight of Orion and the memory of his actions still rubbing their young friendship raw.

So that's how she was going to be, huh? Orion couldn't blame her, he was a monumental asshole of epic proportions. Still, if she was going to be that way, he wasn't going to be nice back. "Oh of course I do, Lilly. If you'd like, I can take you right here on the table. I can't imagine it would take much to get you out of those pants."

Lilly rolled her eyes and turned her focus back to her meal. It was some mush, lacking in taste and easy to mass produce. She thought Orion could be someone special, but it turned out he was just a fool like all the others. He was weak, vile, crude, and most of all cruel. How disappointing...

"What's wrong, doesn't sound appealing? We both know that's not true," Orion said, leaning towards her to whisper in her ear. "Isn't that why you were around me in the first place? I would leave you quivering and convulsing in ways you didn't think possible." Lilly's hand struck out slap Orion as she had last time, but he was ready. He caught her hand and pulled her towards him, ignoring those around him suddenly interested in the unfolding scene.

"Let go of me, Orion," she hissed, trying to yank her arm free. What in the world was this idiot doing?

"Calm yourself, I'm not actually going to do anything. I just want to look you in the eyes," his voice remained level as he kept a tight grasp on her wrist. The young squires were whispering loudly around them as they watched the two adults bicker like children. "Why did you even get involved with me? You clearly don't like anything about who or what I am. Are you another one of those women who are out to change me?"

The mage-squire lowered her voice to a growl, still trying to yank her wrist free of his grasp. "Let. Me. Go. I've got nothing to say to you." Gods be cursed, he needed to get those blue eyes away from her. She could feel his breath on her, and it wasn't something she wanted to deal with.

"Am I too forward? Too flirty? You were all over me at one moment, and then when I say anything back, you freeze up and hate me. I'm just trying to-"

"LET GO OF ME THIS INSTANT, ORION MICHAELS!" Lilly forced herself to her feet, twisting his his grasp until he released her. "You think you're so sly, so smooth. You think you can just talk to anyone however you want! And you can't do that! You won't treat me like that. No one will!" She took the bowl of mush and turned it over on Orion's head.

The snickers coming from the youthful squires acted as a backdrop to the conflict brewing. Orion simple sat there for a moment, the shock of having her lunch placed so unceremoniously on leaving him momentarily stunned. Lilly wasn't waiting around for Orion to retaliate. She'd meant to be done with him. It was stupid of her to even engage him in conversation. If Lilly had just gotten up and left when he arrived, there wouldn't be any issues.

Orion wiped the disgusting gruel from his face, taking the bowl and setting it on top of his own. The rumblings of laughter had turned into a chorus of gossip; this would be the topic of the day throughout the dormitories. "For crying out loud, Lilly..." He wasn't going to let it end like this. She'd supported him when he was down. It had gone sour way too quickly. "Lilly, wait! Come on!"

He rose to his feet, stepped over the seat and took off after the raven haired girl. They could at least get some semblance of closure, even if they were never to talk again.

Lilly didn't look back when Orion called. The man was a buffoon, and not worth a lick of her time. She'd tried to take care of him when he was down, tried to offer him an ear he could talk to when he was so obviously struggling with something in his life, and he'd spit it all back in her face. Why was he such a cruel man? She'd thought he didn't belong in the order because of his kindness, but she'd considered that concept a lot lately. It turned out he was just a dick. Maybe he would fit right in as long as he was that way to everyone.

"Lilly, please! Slow down!" Orion had set off on a jog after her, a trail of disgusting gruel leaving a trail behind him as he moved along. He had to catch up with her and just talk to her, for a moment. ”Come on! We cannot leave things like this!” Gods, when was the last time Orion was chasing after a woman? Usually he was the one walking away and leaving a flustered person behind. It felt like shyke to be on the receiving end for once. Why was he even going after her?

Lilly winded through the hallways of the dormitories, ignoring Orion when did finally catch up with her. The thought crossed her mind to tell him off again, but it didn’t appear he was getting the idea at all. Maybe he could just talk himself to exhaustion. That would save her the trouble.

Falling into step with her, the blue eyed squire tried as he could to get her to at least acknowledge him. ”What do you want from me, Lilly? You had to have some purpose, or do you just fuck with people as a hobby?” Some of the younger squires whom had viewed their initial spat could be heard following the two adults. There wasn’t drama like this to view every day, though Orion would disagree strongly with that idea. He seemed to be a beacon for dislike and drama, with people whose names he didn’t know having strong opinions on him.

The pattering of feet was pushed aside, as Orion focused on Lilly, and Lilly focused on getting to her room where she could just be done with him for the day. They were bound to run into one another, but at least she could catch a brief respite. When her suite came into view, she finally relaxed a little. If her suitemates were there, it would be so much easier to deal with.

”Petch off, Orion. I don’t want to deal with you right now,” she said, a biting tone to her words. Orion nearly recoiled from the venom which dripped from reply, but when she tried to disappear behind the safety of her door, he had to react. Lilly grasped her door handle, opened the door just enough for her to squeeze through, and slide through, trying to slam it shut behind her.

Orion lunged forward with his foot, wincing as he found himself caught between a rather heavy door and the door’s frame. His boots weren’t nearly thick enough to cushion the blow of her slamming it, the pinning force the only thing stopping from collapsing to the ground. ”Shyke! Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, please open the door! Fuck!”

The giggles of the youth echoed throughout the hall. A dirty glance down the corridor sent them back around the corner from which they were peeking, but the whispers betrayed their position. Orion didn’t have time to deal with them, however, considering the intense pain he was being put through as the squire on the other side of the door had put her weight fully against the access. ”Gods, I won’t try and get in, just let me out of the petching door!”

He could feel the shifting of weight as the girl moved slightly away from the door, opened it enough to give Orion a shove, and then slammed it behind him. The shove dislodged him from his position and sent him stumbling backwards and giving him a rather unceremonious meeting with the stone floors of the squire’s dormitory. His rear took the brunt of the force, a rather uncomfortable feeling, but it wasn’t like he’d avoided tumbles like this in the past.

”Just go away,” came her voice, soft, tired, and muffled by the door. ”Haven’t I made it clear that I’m finished dealing with you and your despic-“

”I took a job from Peyton Morothon, Lilly, and it’s been tearing me up, okay?” Hiss timbre was uncertain, volume low, but it seemed she’d heard him, because she stopped talking. Everything fell silent. Nothing from the eavesdropping squires, nothing from Lilly. Just the rhythmic sound of Orion’s breathing. He could hear his heart trying to escape his chest, as well, and it felt so powerful that it may as well have been audible. There weren’t many in the city who hadn’t heard of Peyton Morothon and his exploits. While he was never caught doing anything illegal, there was a certain shady quality about any dealings with him. There was nothing good which could come from a squire working with him.

”I know, it’s stupid, but I didn’t know what to do. Can I..Ugh. I don’t want to talk about it like this. It’s just..I’m leaving. Whatever. Sorry to ruin your day.” Orion dragged himself slowly to his feet, ignoring the throbbing in his foot and bottom. The pain would subside in time, both the physical and his destroyed friendship with Lilly. He didn’t need her, and it some ways he’d managed to move past the outcome of his work for the sleazy Mr. Morothon, but sometimes when he slept he could still see the face of the poor sod who’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Guilt tore him up and left him a mess in an alleyway just a few days back. There was no reason to go through it again.

Slowly, he turned and began to make his way aimlessly down the hall. He needed to get cleaned up anyways. What was the point in trying to explain himself to her? She didn’t care about him, she wanted to be done with him, just as she said.

If that were the case, though, why did he hear her door opening once more?

”…Hey, wait.”

Orion stopped in his tracks, blue eyes drifting to look at his feet. Now she wanted to talk. Juicy information always made a conversation more interesting, right?

”Come here you idiot.” It was just like her. Always so endearing.

”Suddenly so interested in chatting, Lilly,” he spat back, his gaze locked to his feet. He wasn’t even sure if he wanted to see her now. Want what you can’t have, have what you don’t want. It was so very like him to act in such a way. ”I’ve been asking you to talk since we fought, but you would have none of it? Why the sudden change in heart.”

”Because up until now,” she began, never leaving the safety of her doorway. ”I had no idea why you were acting like such a fool.”

What?

She spoke so matter of factly on the issue, as though he was the one at fault. It took two to tango, but he’d been the one trying to do all the work. What right did she have to try and put this on him? ”Acting like a fool?! You were the one pestering me with all sorts of-“

”Orion.” Her voice was stern; commanding. And it silenced the emotional squire. ”If you want to talk, my door is unlocked, but if you’re here to yell at me, then I’d prefer you stay outside. I’m here for you if you want to actually figure anything out, but you’re the one who has wanted to ‘talk’, but has never actually said anything. You’re skilled with your words, Orion Michaels, but you don’t know how to use them for anything of worth.”

With that she disappeared behind the stained wooden door. There was no clicking a lock. No parting shots. Just the simple truth as told by Lilly.

Orion turned around slowly, the flushed tone escaping from his cheeks. How did she cut him right to the bone? It wasn’t fair how right she was. He’d never intended to actually talk to her about what was troubling him so, beyond the fact that he didn’t like her mad at him. There was something about people who kept him off guard that drew him to them. Basha’ir had confounded him right up to her disappearance. Kyra had been the same. So aloof, yet so aware, and completely unpredictable. She’d gone, too, and left him reeling afterwards. In the wake of all that had hit him that season, it had been suppressed somewhat, the overall effect of many things hitting him harder than any one individual. Even Fallon had messed him up time to time, as he waited for her to come and go as she pleased.

And then there was Lilly.

The woman was resistant to his charm so far, commanding, understanding, patient, but had a line. She’d been there for him at his worst, but he’d refused to let her even come close to seeing his best. The walls Orion put up were impenetrable in most cases; the only thing someone could do was wait for him to tear them down or hope he came out himself.

Lilly had made it clear she had no intention of doing either of those things.

Although trepidation gripped at his every feeling, he began to make his way over to the door, one slow step after the next. He felt the nausea coming on quickly while he sifted through the memories of their time together. She was right about him, wasn’t she? He was too blinded by his own anger to notice.

Cautiously he placed his fingers against the handle of the door, freezing at the entrance as he did so. Was there anything to be gained from entering? He still wasn’t sure what her angle was. Usually when someone wanted to get to know him, it was to wrap their fingers around him and try and trap him in some sort of relationship, but this had none of the signs of that. Moments ago the woman had been content to simply move on in her life without him. He’d been more trouble than he was entertaining, and once he crossed onto the wrong side of that ratio, she’d packed up her bags and left him in the dust. What did she want?

With a deep breath and a feeling of dread, Orion began to turn the handle, committing himself to the moment. He pushed the door open and stepped inside.

If there was one thing the knights did, it was make use of space. They’d found some way to make these dorms seem like a pretty sizable area but stuff as many squires as they could into the building. Each of the suites was made to the same specifications to allow for max bodies using the minimal amount of area for each one. He wasn’t surprised that Lilly’s suite was the exact same design as his own. A small communal living area and two doors which led to the sleeping quarters of however many called this suite their home.

Lilly sat in a chair at a small table which rested on the far side of the room, barely raising an eyebrow at the medic when he entered. She was instead reading a book. The book lay flat against the table, and undisturbed mug of an undetermined substance sat beside it. Orion went to speak when he saw her, but she raised her finger to quiet him. “Shhh. Let me finish this chapter. Sit.”

What was he? A dog to be told when he could speak and where to sit?

I guess so.

Orion moved across the room, his vision slowly rotating around the room. It was kept in pretty clean shape, in fact, it was difficult to tell if anyone actually lived there at all. Did she even have any suitemates? He would have killed for that. No Kreig, no Fallon, no anyone. It’s how he’d lived for several years, and how he was dealing with other snoring squires in the morning? ”Come on, Lilly, I’m not-“

”Shhhh!” Lilly shot him annoyed look, pulling the book up close to her face with both hands. Orion shook his head and took a seat adjacent to her, waiting for her to finish. Impatiently waiting, but waiting nonetheless. It was ridiculous that she would treat him like this. If this was how it was going to be, it seemed he would actually be better off leaving. Right as the thought crossed his mind, however, Lillly’s left hand moved from her book and slid the mug over his way. ”Drink,” she said, her voice even and disinterested. Still, Orion knew that she wasn’t the type to take no for an answer, and he was pretty thirsty. And filthy, but that was another issue.

He moved his right hand to grasp the mug, calloused fingers wrapping around its handle. The bells upon bells upon days of training had left his once smooth skin wrought with bumps and bruises. He’d often times wondered if it would get less testing to his body once he was a full knight, but only time could answer that. Orion brought the mug up to his lips, the catching a whiff of alcohol as he did so. Just a sip brought him the familiar tastes of hard liquor. He gave the black haired girl a strange look, but he wasn’t complaining, either. A nice drink was what he needed now, even if he was expected to train after lunch.

It was a rather odd situation, indeed. What was once a fight with verbal explosions was now two adults sitting quietly. One drinking, the other reading. And of course, Orion was still covered in that mush the cooks called lunch. He wasn’t sure what Lilly’s game was. He was never sure of anything with her. But here he sat, playing along anyways.

At least the alcohol is good… She must have taken good care to smuggle that in. He knew well enough that drunk squires weren’t exactly smiled upon. First had experience had taught him to temper his drinking. Most of the time. Sometimes. Every once in awhile.

The distraction that the alcohol offered kept Orion from acting up to try and get Lilly to converse with him, keeping his irritation at bay for the moment. Lilly wasn’t a dumb woman, and she’d recognized early on in her dealings with the emotional squire that he was prone to childlike outbursts if he didn’t get his way. It was hardly a trait appropriate for a knight, much less a grown man, but she figured that his patron was working to change that undesirable part of his personality.

While he wasn’t vocally bothering the woman, he was still displeased. Still it was better than watching her read her book right in front of him. Orion was of the growing opinion that she was reading more than what she’d claimed she was going to, and the more he drank, the more upsetting it was. Each turned page was exasperating and caused his brow to furrow deeper and deeper. So there he sat, just staring at the woman as the crinkling of paper grated at his nerves. Lilly’s lips were turned faintly upwards into a smile, but Orion wasn’t sure if it was due to the book or his expression, and that only made things worse.

As she read word after word, the little bit of patience which Orion had at the moment began to wither away. Was this her way of punishing him? He didn't like to be toyed with. Especially after he started drinking. So if she was going to play her game, he was going to play his. That was only fair.

Orion set the mug on the table and stood up. Lilly's eyes watched him somewhat from her peripherals, but remained mostly focused on the book. It was a brave and foolish thing to leave Orion unattended as it was. When he was angry and blinded by liquid courage, it was another thing all together. The former doctor slowly made his way around behind Lilly, leaning down so his cheek was right next to hers, only a whisper of space between their skins. It was a favored tactic of Orion's. When someone already displayed interest, invading their space could have very satisfactory results. Or have a flurry of slaps. He'd experienced both.

"Orion, stop it.." Lilly protested meekly, refusing to look at him once she'd identified what he was doing. Yes, she was being passive aggressive towards the big lug for being so stupid. She'd offered to hear him out long before it got to the point of dramatics. She figured a lesson on how stupid it was it ignore someone when there was a desire to be involved was in order. But she'd hardly been around him long enough to know all the games he played. The man could turn it on.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he said softly, turning his head away in embarrassment. "You were just so breathtaking sitting there with that smile, I had to see what it was about." He's blue eyes darted around nervously, refusing to make contact with hers, as he moved to give her some space. He bit his bottom lip, engorging the flesh and turning the pink supple flesh red as the blood rushed to the surface, doing so in a sense of shame. Sure, it was all an act, but the sudden change in manner and tone caught Lilly off guard.

"What are you talking about? Stop acting weird," she replied, closing the book as she turned to face him fully. "You think flirting with me is really going to get you anywhere?"

"Gods, Lilly, if only it were flirting," Orion said, hesitantly glancing up to her face. "Do you think I'm here for my health? Maybe you don't know near as much about me as you though." He had a reputation that proceeded him, and unkindly at that. One of discarded hearts, and women forgotten after a single argument. What was often something which had to be overcame in this case could serve to get what he wanted.

Lilly's cheeks flushed as she contemplated the possibilities of his words. What woman her age hadn't been warned about the predator that was he? Did he actually like her? He had an awfully strange way of showing it, if that were the case. "Just stop it," she repeated in protest. Lilly didn't like being on the defensive and a situation which she thought was completely within her grasp was quickly becoming something else.

"Stop it? I wish it were so simple." Orion knelt beside Lilly, his hand snaking out slowly until it was resting gently upon hers. "You could easier ask me to stop breathing, ask me that my heart cease its beating." Positioned to her right side, Orion's right hand sat unmoving upon hers, and left rose until it could gently caress the lengths of her hair.

"I..um..what..huh.." Lilly's words failed her, a woman normally in control of her emotions completely lost by the sudden shift in the way he spoke to her. No vulgarity, no anger. Was it genuine embarrassment? Did he feel guilt for the way he acted towards her? She wasn't sure, but when he started leaning up towards her, she instinctively moved down towards him. It wasn't until she felt the tickling of his breath on her lips that she realized what was going on and reacted, jerking her face to the side in order to avoid a huge mistake.

"You smell like shyke," she said, standing up abruptly and taking a few steps away from the table. With her back facing him, Orion could only grin. It was enjoyable to see her squirm, to see her trying to get away from him for once. Each of them had their lines, and it seemed there was a way to cross them without violent retribution. While he did crave the taste of her lips, the way she avoided his gaze was an acceptable end. "I'm aware. A lovely squire was so bold as to crown me king. It's unfortunate that I'm king of the rotten. I suppose I should go and get cleaned up. Thanks for the drink, Lilly."

As Orion turned to leave, Lilly hesitated. She wasn’t sure what to do with the ridiculous man. He was vulgar, incorrigible, a waste of time. And yet their paths would cross again and again. Worst of all, when he wasn’t being disgusting, she could actually see what had earned him his reputation, and led to a couple of kids. She knew he was flattering her, she knew he was teasing and just trying to get a rise out of her, but even armed with that knowledge, she couldn’t stop her cheeks from flushing bright red.

”W-wait, don’t leave yet,” Lilly muttered, her hand twitched to reach out for him, but the woman’s pride wouldn’t let her.

Orion slowed, a smile creeping across his lips. His little lies and half truths had brought him a long way in life. It wasn’t as though he wasn’t attracted to the mage. She was beautiful, almost statuesque in her visage. Every day she looked as he had the prior, even when she was frustrated, she bore no wrinkles of exhaustion or anger in her skin, emotions rarely experienced.

It was all too easy, though. Because he was a colossal asshole all the time, when he showed the slightest vulnerability, it was like a moth to flame. Everyone wanted to fix something broken he’d learned that much. All he had to do was pretend he was a wounded creature. Manipulative, maybe, but she wasn’t any different.

”Why are you like this?” Lilly stood up suddenly, facing Orion with clenched fists. ”I don’t know what you want! Sometimes you are completely closed off! You won’t even tell me how you’re feeling today. Other times your like this, like you actually care about something beyond badass Orion Michaels!” The young woman took a few steps towards him, staring up at her, still flush cheeks only bringing out the contrast of her deep brown eyes even more. ”One moment I feel like we could be best friends, and at other times we’re complete strangers, and I don’t know what to do.”

Orion reached out and gently took one of her hands in his, softly running his thumb along her fingers. Lilly made no move to resist, though her arm slightly tensed at his touch. Piercing blue eyes gazed down at her face, his lips pursing as he sought the correct words. ”I hardly know what to expect from myself, Lilly,” he said softly, leaning down until his face was a few inches from hers. ”But I do wish we could forget about it for a while. I’m so up and down, and fighting with you, it makes it really difficult to focus.”

Orion released her hand and instead wrapped his arms around the mage’s waist, pulling her in against him. ”Lilly…why do I bother you so much. Do I scare you?” Slender fingers wandered up the small of her back as he whispered to her. ”Why are you so interested in my thoughts, and who I am?” He brushed his lips against Lilly’s ear as his fingers trailed back down her spine.

Instinctually, she pressed her body against him further, closing her eyes as she surrendered to his hold. ”You’re…it’s…gods this is embarrassing Orion.” How was she supposed to admit she was just curious about him? It wasn’t as though Orion’s life was a big secret to those who’d asked around. The man had taken no care to hide his exploits.

”It’s what, Lilly?”

”N-nothing.”

Orion’s lips touched her neck, causing the dark haired woman to gasp at the sudden sensation. She recoiled abruptly, pushing away from the larger man, now refusing to look his way. ”No, Orion. I can’t. You’ve got to stop this.”

He forced a half smile to his expression, giving a short nod to his fellow squire. ”Don’t worry. I understand, I’ll leave you alone. Maybe we can talk some other time when I’m not so messy.” Orion turned and made his way quickly for the door. Lilly remained silent, watching with a tense uncertainty. It wasn’t supposed to go as it had. She was with him, then done with him, and now they were…wherever they were. He was playing with her emotions. There was no way he actually meant a word he’d said, she was sure of it.

Orion exited the squire’s room, letting the door slam shut behind him. It was quite the rush to play his game again. With a satisfied smile, he leaned against the wall beside her door. She had thought she was going to be in charge of thing, and Orion had turned the tables. He’d just have to wait and see how their next round went, that was all.
