Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Lacerta sat in the White Crane, leaning on her wooden table. Her long legs were half bent to fit under the surface, but she was used to such a position. Luckily, Riverfall was built to accommodate such height, considering the massive Akalaks that live there. Her table was close to the wall, but not next to it, but she’d sat herself to the best view the rest of the room. A musician stood at one side, filling the room with a sweet combination of a lute, and singing. The sailor had spent quite a bit of time listening to the song, mentally criticising the various parts. However, the musicianwas quite skilled, and the only thing she could catch was more a personal preference than a real flaw. The man’s voice was a little… scratchy… for her taste… even for an Akalak.

Her attention had drifted from the music, however, and she watched the various people around her. A pair of men, one aging with grey, stringy hair, the other with a young face, were having an intense whispered conversation. She couldn’t hear any words or sounds, but by their faces…. It was important. Moving on to the next group, a trio of Akalaks were finishing off what had been a large dinner. Their skins created a dark rainbow, with blue, green, and magenta coloring. They were much more joyful than any of the others, laughing and joking among themselves. Their loud voices filled a lot of the room, until someone quieted them with a sharp hiss… they’d begun to overpower the music. Lacerta chuckled quietly to herself, finding their sheepish faces amusing.

She glanced at the woman who’d silenced the Akalaks, and spotted a pair of Konti. One looked like the former’s daughter, childlike, though age was hard to guess with the pale race. They were sharing cups of tea, and had returned to their calm conversation from before the disturbance. It was fun to watch how different people went through their evenings, and through dinner.

The Ethaefal herself was simply dressed, in breeches and a shirt. It was an early dinner, and the sun had yet to set, so she was still in her celestial form. Her horns instantly labeled her as non-human, their color a snowy white for the current season. Her gnosis mark was slightly more obvious than most, a single rayed sun around one eye.

A word broke the Ethaefal out of her intense thought, and she stared at the speaker in surprise. He was tall, though not quite her height… and…. Quite handsome, really. However, that was quickly explained when she spotted the man’s –Ethaefal, really- horns. They poked over his head, crossing in a simple, pretty, design. She raised an eyebrow, and nodded when she heard the next statement. “It is nice to meet another of my kind” he commented, taking the seat opposite to Lacerta.

She was a little put off by this, shifting in her seat awkwardly. The company of another of her kind made her feel nostalgic about their home, and she wished she could be alone rather than have company. However, he seemed like a nice man in general, so she allowed him to introduce himself. “I am Apus” he said, naming one of the constellations she knew. However, the name gave her another shot of pain as she remembered an owl she’d befriended… by the same name. “Lacerta” she replied, leaning back in her chair for the conversation she knew would come.

She was about to comment how the man wasn’t exactly a bird, because of his name, but realized it would be hypocritical. She wasn’t a lizard, after all. Instead, she gave a warm smile, before beginning a conversation. “So… a son of Syna? I’m curious, if you don’t mind my asking, but when did you fall?” She knew her own fall had been over three hundred years ago, and was curious to see if she was dealing with someone older or younger than herself. It was mere interest, not judgement, but she still received a raised eyebrow in reply. The Eth nearly scowled, but resisted the urge.. she had to be polite.

“Fifty or so years ago. I don’t really count. You? If we’re on this topic.” Fifty wasn’t too old, or too short. In her opinion, you stopped growing ‘wiser’ at that age. Humans might consider that elderly, but in her opinion it was more middle age, and the start of life like that for a long time. She’d had a lot of contact with those of long-lived races, especially from her time in Mura and Riverfall, so she had figured this out. The Konti especially never appeared older than 20… but their mentalities were different. Older race’s aging was generally complicated, and there were none more complicated than the Ethaefal. “Three hundred and… fifty years? Probably less though.” She grinned, realizing she was simply throwing the fifty around. “Have you lived in Riverfall for long?” she continued, sort of trying to keep the conversation going… though, only Syna knew why. She still wanted to be alone… but was still trying to keep talking.

Apus gave her a curious look before shrugging. His hair – a golden blonde – reached his shoulders, and moved as he shrugged. “Only a few years so far… I spent a lot of time in Yaheba.” He cocked his head, watching the other Eth for a moment. “You? You must have travelled a lot over three hundred years.” The musician frowned at the question, thinking over it for a while. “I have no idea the total time I’ve spent in Riverfall… I keep coming back. It’s been two seasons since I returned, however… I like spending most of my time in Laviku’s domain.” She gave Apus a small smile, relaxing slightly. She’d visited Yaheba as well, and vaguely wondered if his mortal form had something to do with that. She’d certainly felt a lot more welcome in Ahnatep than any other visitor, considering her appearance as an Ethaefal at day, and her Eypharian form at night.

Apus seemed quite interested by this statement, and raised both eyebrows in surprise. “Well… that’s quite a lot of travelling, from what I hear. You mentioned sailing? I’ve done a bit of sailing myself, but I’ve never had my own boat… mostly I helped out as a deck hand though. What about you? Have your own sailboat?” The Eth seemed merely curious, but it still irritated Lacerta. It was annoying how he’d figured that much out from a simple statement… but at least he was observant. She scratched the back of her neck before answering, still finding the conversation slightly… awkward.

“I do have my own ship, actually. Just a small one- thirty feet or so. She’s called Starry Sea. I’ve had her for a while…” She drifted off, attention turning to the music that filled the room. She watched the Akalak man distractedly, not focusing on Apus anymore. Every time she remembered the man’s name, she had a hard time relating him to the Owl she once knew. With the Ethaefal’s habit of naming themselves after constellations… names could overlap a little. There was probably another Lacerta out there somewhere that she hadn’t met yet. “your own ship? Sounds nice,” Apus commented, but it just drifted past the older Eth. The man paused, watching with humor in his expression for a moment. Only when the song finished did he speak again.

“Hey… you awake?” He waved a hand before his companion’s face, receiving a startled expression. “Oh, yes…” the compuser stuttered, shaking her head in embarrassment. “Sorry-“ she began, but was quickly interrupted with a smile. “No problem. It’s nice music. I’m assuming you like it? I’ve met some people who utterly detest music… but you don’t seem to be one of them.” Lacerta glanced at the man again, once again surprised by his powers of deduction. “Well… yea. I’m a musician actually… a flutist… but I’m a better composer.” She shrugged, focusing heavily on Apus now. He seemed like a music lover himself, but she wasn’t sure how interested he was in it… However, the next statement she received answered her question. “Really? A composer? You don’t see too many of those. I myself am a bard – I play a number of instruments, but mostly the ocarina. I sing too… and I’m a follower of Rhaus, as well as Syna.”

Lacerta’s eyebrows shot up at this answer… she hadn’t expected a follower of Rhaus. It was nice to find someone with the same interests however… even if they were another Eth. Still, someone who would live a long time would make a great companion… and not die on her. The original Apus’ death had been sad, but expected… he was an owl, and they didn’t even live as long as a normal human. It had been a long time since she visited Lhavit, and she’d been to Mura and back on that timeline. But that wasn’t related to their conversation right now. She needed to focus on now , and on this Apus. Shaking her head slightly to clear her thoughts, she focused on the conversation at hand.

“An ocarina, really? Interesting. Funny that we have such similar interests…” Despite her determination to stay on topic, Lacerta’s attention waned once again as she glanced out the open door. Sighing quietly, she checked her fingers… yes, they were starting to glow. The sun was setting. Twisting strands of light made their way up her arms and legs, signalling the change in her form. Apus was also undergoing a similar change, his whole body glowing in a seamless light. It took several moments for both of them to completely shift, and the lights eventually died away.

Apus had a stocky and slightly shorter body of a Benshira. He had dark skin and bright eyes, as well as dark brown – nearly black – hair with a similar cut as before. His hands were larger and more callused, but sat in the same position as before. Lacerta had gone through a slightly more dramatic change. Her hair had turned a jet black, and reached her waist rather than the middle of her back. She’d lost the spiral like horns, as well as another four inches… though she was still incredibly tall for her race. However, the most obvious difference was the four extra arms that were connected to her shoulders. Crossing a pair, she grinned at her companion. A lot of the people were staring in shock at the surprising change, but Lacerta stubbornly ignored them. This would provide a few more interesting conversation topics.

“An Eypharian?” Apus commented, a now black eyebrow raising. “Benshira?” she threw back, amusement in her voice. It was funny how both of them were races native to Ekytol… and this certainly explained the Eth’s residence in Yaheba. Remembering the uses of all six arms, the sailor arranged them in pairs. The top remained crossed over her chest, more for comfort than any social indication. The middle pair nested easily on the table, whilst the last were clasped gently in her lap.

The Konti girl from earlier was staring open-mouthed at the pair, while her mother quietly explained the change. A loud outburst of “That’s amazing!” made the Eth wince. Not exactly… subtle. Apus chuckled quietly at the statement, glancing back to grin at the child… who was probably much older than she looked. The older woman could even have been the Konti’s grandmother, or sister, for all they knew.

“So… if we’re sitting here, in the best restaurant in Riverfall… are we going to eat anything?” Apus asked, voice laughing. Lacerta glanced up in surprise, but grinned herself. “Not really… I only bought a drink to explain me being here… I’m not hungry anyways.” She shrugged, feeling a little guilty. She had no need to eat in her celestial form, and didn’t feel like it at the moment. The other Eth smiled and nodded, before pushing himself up and out of the chair. “Me neither… and I’d like to see your boat. Mind giving me a tour?” His eyes were bright and humorous, and Lacerta stood to follow. “Sure” she replied simply, glad to get out of the still starring room… but at least the music had started up again.

Their walk was nice and peaceful, especially since the city had mostly cleared up. Zintila’s lights sparkled overhead, and Leth shone over the world, lighting their path. They didn’t speak on the way to the docks, but instead Lacerta watched the other residents milling around. Friends, couples, parents and children walked through the fading light, chatting and talking. It was fun to watch them, as she always did… but right now, she had a new person to focus on.

Soon enough, the pair reached the docks and began walking along one of the piers. Lacerta directed her companion onto Starry Sea with a flourish of her hands. It was a small boat compared to some, but easy to control with only one person. The hull was a little battered, but strong, and the main sail was still rolled up along the yardarm. She hadn’t sailed for a few days, and keeping it up would have harmed the sail… so she simply avoided that by letting it down after each excursion. The deck was clear and mostly flat, though there were small seating arrangements near the wheel. The interior of the cabin was hidden from sight by a simple wooden covering whish was locked, so no one would simply walk into her home. It was nearly silent at the docks, only the slow lapping of waves along the wooden dock broke the quiet .

“She’s quite nice” Apus admitted, voice full of honestly. The Eth felt her hearts fill with pride, but didn’t let it show. “Thank you” she replied instead, voice carefully neutral. She felt like she needed to elaborate, but wasn’t quite sure what else to say. Instead, she allowed the silence to grow, and watched the Benshira explore the deck.. “Very nice!” he finished, emphasizing his previous statement. The composer hid a small smile behind one of her hands before joining the man on deck. He was fingering the wheel lightly, grasping it like a captain would. She felt slightly irritated by this, but relaxed when the Ethaefal moved on. Instinctively, she leaned on the wheel, unintentionally blocking Apus from taking the spot again… or was it intentional? She didn’t want to delve into the subject.

“You sail her all by yourself? I’ve only worked on larger boats, and those would never run with only one crew member… I’m impressed.” There was obvious awe in the man’s voice, and his eyes held quite a bit of respect. “It’s not much” Lacerta admitted modestly, completely honest. It wasn’t too much of a challenge to handle Starry Sea on her own, but still… the compliment made her feel warm inside. Like she was a little girl, looking up for Apus’ approval… but…. Wait. No. That wasn’t right. She was three hundred years older, more skilled, and more intelligent. She shouldn’t feel like this… not at all. It was nearly a little… insulting. Her face darkening, she straightened instinctively, avoiding all eye contact.

“So….” Her companion began, trying to keep the conversation alive. Despite her attempts at hiding her irritation, Apus still noticed the expression. “You’ve travelled a lot, right? Have you ever been to Syliras?” There was a little hope in his voice, like he was amazed at the concept. Lacerta simply made an agreeing sound, not feeling like talking. She’d found a good spot to stare out at sea, and watched the slow moving and dark water. Behind her back, the Eth’s eyes widened slightly, and a grin grew on his face. “Really?” he exclaimed, tone full of excitement. The sailor glanced back, slightly confused. “Yea…?” she answered, her lack of understanding obvious in her voice. “Your point?”

“I’ve always wanted to go there… the knights… all that. It’s said to be the biggest city in Mizahar! I want to go there one day, I just need to find a way…” Apus’ voice was soft and wistful by the end, and she caught the man staring at the just visible stars. Lacerta almost felt sorry for him… though the city wasn’t as amazing as he’d implied, it was nice to see someone with such a determined dream. She really wanted to help… somehow. It was funny how easily she’d taken to the Ethaefal, especially with her usual anti-social tendencies. He was simply so… friendly. And open. It was very calming and relaxing… though almost too much so.

Barely knowing what she was saying, Lacerta muttered “Well… maybe I can take you there one day…” Her tone was slow and thoughtful, but she immediately regretted the statement. Take a passenger? That was crazy! Still, she couldn’t take it back now… there was no heading back from here. Mentally, she groaned, but didn’t let the expression get the better of her. Maybe it would be good to have a companion… get herself back into people again. She’d been quite sociable in Lhavit, all those years ago… maybe is was time to bring that back… since it hadn’t been too bad, thinking back on it. Maybe she could make an exception this time… just this once.

Apus’ grin quickly changed into that of an excited smile. The Eth could have sworn he’d started bouncing. “Would you? Really? That would be amazing!” He sounded like a little kid, excited by such a prospect. Dashing forward, he wrapped long arms around the older Eth. She nearly jumped in surprise, a little startled by the show of affection. She felt they were rushing the plans a little bit… but didn’t say anything. Instead, she patted the Benshiran’s arm awkwardly, cheeks red. They’d figure this out later… right? Maybe she would take Apus to Syliras one day… it had been a while since her last visit.

Lacerta glanced over at Apus, leaning heavily on the wheel. After almost a season of planning, they’d finally arranged the trip to Syliras. Though she’d been worried about doing this to fast, she didn’t anymore, instead feeling ready for the journey ahead. She’d had to double her usual stock, but at least neither of them needed to eat nor drink when Syna was in the sky, to that made things a little easier. She watched blandly as the younger Ethaefal untied the fenders, dumping them into a small storage area in the back. They were relatively heavy, so she was content to let him do the hard work… she’d do the steering for now. It would be nice to not have to leap around the boat with tacking… with another crew member, she could have Apus man the ropes, while she kept to the wheel… her favorite place.

With a small heave, she helped her companion push the boat off the dock, and watched it float a little ways away from the wooden construction. She was almost tempted to wave, but shook away the feeling. Instead, she called to the Eth “Tacking! Pull the right rope!” He was already there, and heaved on the line, pulling the foresail from the left side of the boat to the right. The change in propulsion caused the ship to swing in that direction, and she kept a firm hand on the wheel. Though it usually didn’t seem like much, she did have quite a bit of turning power from here, but always needed to keep an eye on their angle… if the sail began flapping, or losing air, she’d need to turn the hull to get enough wind. It was quite a complicated dance, but she’d gotten the hang of tacking years ago… it was when you moved to using something like a Spinnaker that things got really challenging… and she’d never been able to handle one of those on your own… you needed someone constantly at the wheel, and another constantly at a rope. It was a two – preferably three – person job, and usually something she couldn’t handle. But… maybe this trip.

As the tide helped them drift slowly away from the crowds of ships, so did their sails, and soon enough they were half a kilometer from Riverfall. Though she kept her hands on the wheel, Lacerta glanced back once at the beautiful city… it didn’t match the marvels of Lhavit, but certainly held some beauty. The waterfalls and cliffs that gave the city it’s name were particularly wonderful… but she’d always like to see those skyglass domes again. Maybe one day she’d return… though it had been a particularly challenging journey.

Apus had taken one of the wooden seats and was leaning over the side, trailing his fingers through the water. “It’s good to be back at sea again” he commented after straightening, shaking drops off his fingers. “I loved my trip from Yaheba, even though I sometimes got sea sick in the evenings…” He coughed, drawing a smile to both of their faces. “I rarely get sea sick… even in a storm. I’m just used to it, I guess…” the composer replied, shrugging lightly. When she’d first begun sailing, she’d had horrible times on ships, but over the years… it would have been strange for her not to get used to it. Three hundred and fifty-or-so years of sailing? Who would get sea sick? She hadn’t forgotten what it felt like, strangely enough, but it was a pretty memorable sickness… and an annoying one.

“Like some music?” The voice broke through her thoughts, and the Eth glanced over to see her companion raising his ocarina. It was a nice ceramic one… not as amazing as some of the glass ones imported from Wind Reach, but it certainly created a nice tone. She’d heard the man play it several times over the season, and had even tried to compose a piece or two to go with it. However, Apus knew more than enough songs to keep the group of them entertained, so she allowed him to play whatever he wanted. She answered the question with a nod and a small smile, and awaited the entertainment. If there was always something she didn’t like about sailing… was that she couldn’t have music while at the wheel. Her hands were always busy, and sometimes the silence got to her… and the rush of wind filled her ears with an unpleasant sensation. However, with another musician on board, that problem was also solved. Maybe her misgivings had been wrong… this had trip had quite the potential to be a good one.

She watched the half-risen sun while she listened to the quiet song. The notes were quick, but light, and created a sad mood rather than a happy, excited one. But it wasn’t… depressing. Just… a little down. Melancholy, that was the word. That reminded her of the Akvatari… this was exactly like one of the songs they’d composed. She’d spent time on their island as well, and knew the race better than most on Mizahar… though of course, not perfectly. “That sounds like a song from Abura” she commented wryly, though didn’t look at the man. However, she did catch the edge of a raised eyebrow, and Lacerta had to resist the urge to grin. “Actually, yes. I met one in Yaheba… very friendly, in my opinion… though a little sad. He taught me this song, along with another few. I wanted to see if you recognized it.” He chuckled lightly and continued the piece, and once again they fell into a compatible silence.

When he finished the song, Apus began another, with a completely different mood. The Ethaefal instantly identified it as a sailor’s song, with its hoppy, excitable tune, and intent reminder of waves. She’d written many songs similar to this, and a lot of her pieces had to do with the sun or the sea, as both held so many views… there were so many different tunes she could write. “Wait… I recognize this one…” she began, though meaning it slightly differently than her original statement. She recognized it because she could have sworn it was something she wrote. Shaking her head in confusion, she asked “Where did you learn that? I’m sure I’ve written it.” The other Eth’s expression was one of pure confusion, and he stared blankly for several moments. “Really? I learnt if from a Svefra… they said they bought it… oh. Oh. I get it. Wow, that’s pretty cool.” His voice held marvel as he finally understood the situation. Lacerta finally understood as well, but didn’t let it show on her face. Instead, she allowed both eyebrows to raise and listened to the quiet sound of Apus chuckling. She didn’t say anything as he finally stopped, and continued the song, mind drifting in an attempt to find memories of selling that song… but they were too fuzzy, and too unimportant. Oh well.
