While waiting for The Ghost King by R.A. Salvatore, I've gone back to what I used to read when I was younger: The Borribles Trilogy by Michael de Larrabeiti. Borribles are "kids who grew up with a bad start". They live outside normal society, stealing whatever they need to survive. They're like Peter Pan - they don't get old as long as they're Borribles. They have sharp ears, but once their ears get clipped, they become normal children again and grow up into adults. So they never want to be caught.

It's nothing special now, but I remember back when I was a kid I found the idea so novel. I was kind of a naughty kid (okay, I was a VERY naughty kid :D ) and I thought back then I might turn into a Borrible because of that! :p
Apologies to everyone I'm threading with, but it's like the Danaides for me right now.

Just finished The Tawny Man trilogy. It was the conclusion, I think, of The Farseers trilogy written by Robin Hobb. I loved the story of both.

Currently reading Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol while I wait for Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth books to be mailed.

I just finished the entire series of Sword of Truth. :) It was quite the read and took me about three months for all.. what 10? 12? The last book was amazing... if you can bear Kailan's crying, Richard feeling sorry for himself, and the same bad guys coming around and around.

Right now, I'm eyeball deep in a new series thats best not discussed here!

What are you reading?

Wondered where this thread went ...

Today I've started reading Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. To be honest, I've wanted to read that book forever and never came past the first 100 pages. Now I've taken the chance to read it for school and I'm really having fun so far! It's very special in language and content. I think this time I'll manage to finish it. ^^

What are you reading?

Didn't know there was one of these threads.... Let me tell you about this book I hate.

I'm trudging through a trilogy I picked up on a bargain whim whilst at Barns and Nobel three months ago. Yeh, three months. 560 pages, transparently thin, super small type, not including the language translations or appendices which just happen to be another 40 pages. It's painful to say the least.

The Prince of Nothing, book one: The Darkness That Comes Before: by R. Scott Bakker.

His own world and inner lore are what drew me in and while they're not anything fantastically new or novel, there's a spin on things that keeps it just above fresh. Gods, mental demi gods with capes made of sewn together faces, giant lizard men from Farscape, and the ever present "Quiet monk that wipes the floor with anyone that manages to piss him off."

Like I said, it's not new per say but it is deep, complex, political, and multifaceted; plus the author doesn't shy away from anything that makes readers squeamish and I admire that. So, I'm soldiering on to finish the series because I have never not finished a book.

What are you reading?

Postby Charon on June 2nd, 2010, 11:12 pm

I'm glad this thread got picked back up- here's my current reading update:

I just finished Stephen King's Under the Dome and it was very interesting (and long). The story, on the surface, seems quite simple and straight forward but when you're reflecting on it afterward and during, you can really peel away at the layers and discover a much deeper meaning in the text. Very good and I'd recommend it to somebody who can ready 1100 or so pages relatively quickly as it's not that great of a book to drag out if you don't have to.

I just started Dragon Tears by Dean Koontz and so far it seems like the classic Koontz writing that I really enjoy, but I'm only 20 pages in, haha.

Professionally I just finished the "on leadership" book about Abe Lincoln (Lincoln on Leadership). If you've ever been curious about some historical leaders throughout history and exactly how they became so successful and known for their leadership, just about any of the books in the series are very good.

On those lines, I've just started a book called From Babel to Dragomans by Bernard Lewis. It details his education and experiences in the Middle East and discusses Islam culture from somebody who may be considered one of the leading authorities on those and related matters.

What are you reading?

Postby Vadim on July 7th, 2010, 7:11 pm

I am going to kick this thread back into life by saying I'm reading a few books, mostly Tolkien based. At the moment I'm working on The Two Towers, The Children of Hurin, and The Silmarillion. On an unrelated fantasy level I'm reading the book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall which tells the tale of a man who goes looking for a tribe of Indians in Mexico that are rumored superathletes that could put the top marathoners in the world to shame all while doing the race with ease.

The Prince of Nothing <--- This book sucks. The story line peaked, and then the coaster got jammed at the top of the first drop.

Moving on to Frankel's, Man's Search For Meaning, for a re-read.
