What are you reading?

Postby Levolor the Blind on September 1st, 2009, 6:05 am

I mean beside this board?

I'm currently working through The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson. It is the second book in a series but I haven't read the first. I got it from a friend of mine who raved about it and her taste is usually good.

I'm halfway through and the plot is finally kicking in. Which is good because I've been plodding through a couple hundred pages of digressions and exposition just to get to this point. Finally the murders that are central to the story have happened.

Nice thread idea. :)

I'm currently reading The Shaman (Die Schamanin) from Marcia Rose. Basically it's about six generations of female healers and shamans in America, starting with the famous native Bird and ending with modern doctor Robin and her adoptive girl. I'm already halfway through, because I really like the writing style and how ancient shaman knowledge is connected with modern medicine. I recommend it (if there's an English version which I'm not sure of).

I'm ashamed to say I haven't read either. I have a massive pile of books that I need to get started on... but I'm going to confess to currently reading the September 2009 CA magazine. ;)

Ah, that's a shame Levollor. I always found the books that couldn't get us glued to it from the beginning as "wasting their potential". It's a good thing you didn't put down the book before the killing happens.

Right now, I'm reading "Nocturnal" from Poppy D. C. It's a story about half cat half human races that have to fought against vampire in their homeland. The baroness of this race is in the brink of death and the heir to the throne has a lot in her hands to try to lead the people in the war against vampire.

It sounds a bit cliche to me, but I like how the author decribes the scenery and the mansion. I can see it's beautiful. :)

Azul, I seldom give up on a book, no matter how slow; it takes truly horrible prose before I give up on one (and there have been those, oh god, there have been those). So I did finish The Girl Who Played with Fire and I'm not seeing the literary merit that the friend who recommend it did. It was a serviceable thriller and probably made a decent movie (according to wikipedia, the swedes made it into one) but it was too smug and didactic to be an great book.

Malia, I can't find anything by Marcia Rose on the American Amazon site, so I'm guessing Die Schamanin hasn't been translated.

Aside from Reaper's Gale by Steven Erikson, I am reading Turn Coat by Jim Butcher.

It is #11 in The Dresden Files, which is a series about a wizard named Harry Dresden that lives in Chicago, set in current time. It is very much Detective-Noir meets Fantasy, and is awesome. One thing I really love about the series is that it is written in a first person narrative told by the main character. He also does really interesting things with general fantasy concepts like werewolves, vampires and fairies.

I am reading the lovely bones right now. It is about a little girl that gets murdered and goes to heaven and watches how her family deals with her murder and her trip to heaven and how she is trying to help her family solve her murder and bring her murderer to justice. It is very good so far and it is going to be a movie.

Well, I've been noted for not reading however recently I read the cantebury Tales and got about half way through before I was driven insane so I went to A book by Brad Thor The Lions of Lucerne, only because it seems the first of many and I'm trying a different genre of reading. Going with espianoge even though the military stuff in there is kind of annoying (Got burned out on it actually being in the military I guess) but so far it's great.

The Dead Poet's Society - A great book, a bit short, but nevertheless I think it's truly awesome. It's one of those which really move and inspire me. I wish I could be as tough as they are and do what I really like (of course, without killing myself afterwards!).

And the movie is just as great as the book. :)

I just finished reading Fire in the Mist by Holly Lisle (available for free on the Baen Free Library) yesterday and I just finished re-reading Fief: A Look at Medieval Society from its Lower Rungs by Lisa Steele. Right now I am reading several books piecemeal, mostly from the Baen Free Library.
