The void was a dangerous place. Far different than anything Pandaemus had experienced. The nothingness of it was said to be maddening when dwelt on too long. And the potential for discovery was tantalizingly near whenever one pushed their djed into a portal. But now the wizard, Cid, he had so happily been apprenticed to needed failed and faulty golems disposed of. Pan’s dubious control of voiding was the skill set Cid turned to. He would provide the debris to be disposed of, and Pandaemus would risk life and limb to clear space in the lab.

They were all listener golems fallen prey to the degradation of time. Hidden leather strips were eroded, or else the chords of the brick’s ‘mouth’ were frayed and irreparable. His desk was laden with the bricks. He had returned to the lab to find his new desk positively suffocating with the things. Pandaemus was eager to work, but the void had often caused deep anxiety for him. Always the idea of mastering the void had been delicious to him. To be able to end someone without a trace had him fantasizing since his master introduced him to the concept at ten. But he had wizened up a bit since then and was well aware of the dangers now.

But danger was just one side of the coin that was magic. Danger and power in a constant struggle for the user’s soul. It was awesome and terrible at the same time. Perhaps the two things were the same when speaking of magic? Perhaps they were utterly useless concepts in regards to the inhuman ability to control the essence of things. Either way, he had a very long way to go before he understood it fully. Like all the other apprentices here, his was a long road. Luckily, he had the time to walk it.

He sat on his wooden bench and examined one of the listener golems closely. Hallow bricks housing a relatively intricate compartment of chords. This was, Pandaemus imagined, for dictating what the golem had recorded. And there was also a slot in the brick with a beaten bit of leather glued to one side of it. And in the front face of the brick a small hole was drilled into the slot. These golems were all over Sahova, eavesdropping on everything that went on. His own room had probably contained at least one.

Now he had what was supposed to be his own desk, and had resigned himself to no longer needing sleep. He would often times walk down to Port Silence and reflect upon his condition on the docks. Lucky for him he had not been exposed to too much intrigue before realizing these listener golems existed. The motivation to finish this side job crept up inside him. Cid had given him a project, no doubt catered to his lack of ability. But it was the central mission of his life right now, and this disposal was a distraction, an obstacle to rid himself of.

Pandaemus closed his eyes, eager to get back to work on his real task. The mind moves through practiced thoughts quickly. Especially a mind that receives as much attention as that of a wizard. Pan calmed himself and found the void within his head quickly. The black nothingness was there, and his mind struggled with a grasp on just how expansive it could be. Tendrils of fear gripped at his ribs, trying to find their way into his chest. Nothingness was intimidating. The nerve shattering presence of nothing overwhelmed his insignificant presence of something.
