6th of Spring, 514 AV
The gates of Avanthal were much shorter than she remembered. Her memories from childhood depicted a set of icy towers that stretched up into the clouds and pierced the heavens. But many years later she stood in front of a set of relatively short and stubby ice walls. Though it was not the walls themselves that communicated the strength of the city's defense, but instead the well-armed guards to either side of the entrance. Anyone foolish enough to try and bring harm to the city would probably find themselves very much not alive in a matter of seconds. If she were in any other position, she would happily accept the warm embrace of safety the city provided, but now it seemed like they were protecting something other than the people and places inside. Their rigid forms and stone faces hid secrets.
But she was ushered in by a gust of cold wind, the winter chill unwilling to give way to the changing of seasons. She would argue the sincerity of the guardians at a later date. There was no sense in dwelling on it now. With a heavy sigh and a dry swallow, Zaylunao passed through.
