Lian eyed his friend dubiously. The younger man was bubbling with excitement over the upcoming hunt. And despite the fact that he was still recovering from a moderately severe leg injury, he was so confident in his skills as a hunter that he refused to listen to reason. Meric was determined to participate in the hunt, and nothing was going to stop him. So Lian watched his friend double check his gear once more in silence. "Oi, Lian!" Lian jumped a little as he was jolted from his thoughts. "What is it, Meric? Ready to admit that you're pushing yourself too far too fast, and that you're insane for going hunting with that injured leg of yours?" "Nah. My leg's almost healed. It'll be fine, you'll see!" Lian glanced down at his friend's bandaged leg pointedly, but said nothing. "Seriously, it's going to be fine. Nothing's going to happen, I promise!" "If you say so. Just be careful, okay?" "I will. You don't have to worry. It's just...well...look, nothing's going to happen. My leg is nearly healed, and this is an easy hunt. We're hunting rabbits, not glassbeaks. Still...if something does happen to me...promise that you'll tell my family to look after Tenrai. She hasn't said anything yet, but my sister and my mother are both healers, so I've picked up a few things from them. I think that Tenrai's pregnant. Nothing's going to happen to me...but if the worst does happen, she's going to need someone to take care of her in my stead." Lian nodded. It was the only thing he could do. "I'll tell them." he promised quietly. Lian wished his friend luck as he watched him ride off into the tall grass with the rest of the hunting party. The transition between sleeping and waking did not come easily. Lingering images from a fading fream pursued Lian into the waking world, haunting him with the painful reminder of a memory he would rather forget. "Meric, you idiot." Lian murmured softly. The younger man had always been cocky, and over confident, but never to this extent. There had to have been something else driving his friend to go on that hunt besides the need to constantly challenge himself. Lian struggled to think of something...anything that could have been driving his friend. But try as he might, nothing came to mind. And now he would never know. Meric wasn't coming home. As with many of the deaths out in the Sea of Grass, there was no body. The hunting party had run into a pair of glassbeaks. The deadly predators had been stalking the same herd of deer the hunters had, and running into them had come as a nasty surprise. Of the five hunters that had gone out, only two had returned. One of them succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. It was from the survivor that Lian had learned of Meric's fate; the reckless fool had charged the pair of glassbeaks in an attempt to give the others time to escape. His desperate attempt worked...but Meric's bravery had cost him his life. |
