Pre-Character Creation:
On a dusty autumn day as a golden sun reflected off the waters in the bay, a baby girl was born in a small Zeltiva outpost to a courier by the name of Thomas Blackwell and a tavern server named Olivia Blackwell. The healers had said Olivia could not conceive, so the child's birth was something of a miracle. Her life would not be a charmed one however. Even her birth weight, at a little under three pounds, would foreshadow the constant struggle she would make all her life for existence. Thomas had desperately wanted a son and his new born daughter's tenacity had greatly reminded him of his father so he named her for him, Samuel.
Sam's earliest memories are of her father keeping her up well past her bed time, much to her mother's chagrin, while regaling her with tale of romantic dashing rogues. She ate the stories up. She never developed a penchant for storytelling but memorized all of the secret code words and cryptic communication techniques she heard about in her father's stories. Any other memories of her father Sam has are few and far between. He passed when she was only sixteen seasons old. All she was told was that he was killed accidentally during his courier work. She was haunted for many weeks by the most vivid dreams of a guard killing him.
Shortly after her father's passing Sam became something of a bully in her neighborhood. At first the kids teased her for being so tiny and scrawny but this did not last long. Perhaps it was out of wrath, or some misplaced feelings of inadequacy being a girl with a boy's name but she became very agressive and on several occasions even garnered the guards attention with her antics. Finally her mother could not take the stress anymore and broke down crying and begging her daughter to stop acting out.
In a successful attempt to placate her daughter's listlessness she found Thomas's old tome of thief tales and gave it to her young daughter. Sam began to turn inwards. She was always friendly and outgoing but made few friends and fewer close friends. Often she would practice slight of hand tricks alone, sometimes she would entertain small children with 'magic tricks' to further practice her larcenous skills.
Samuel's mother, Olivia, was as weak as Sam was physically but she lacked Sam's mental drive that she had inherited from her father. As a result she often became ill but during a particularly harsh winter Olivia took very ill. She was so sick that she was unable to work. So Sam began to look for a job. Due to her physical incompetency she had few options, but was able to find work as a courier's assistant from her father's old employer.
As the years passed Sam's mother's ailment grew worse. Sam consulted a healer to find that the cure for her mother's illness was an expensive one. She begged her boss to give her more work and so became a true apprentice courier.
A fine spring some years later the fish were biting and birds were chirping. Though all the world seemed to have spring fever Sam's mother had another kind of fever. Sam almost reached her monetary goals for a cure to heal her mother when her mother passed unexpectedly one night.
Samuel had nothing to tie her down to her small bay outpost in Zeltiva so she took a particularly dangerous courier job that would lead her all the way to Syliras. Now in such a huge city with so many opportunities Sam is tempted more than ever to shake off the dust of her sedentary safe and stable life to pursue her dreams of adventure action and perhaps even some larceny. |
