”The Valterrian,” Dinah began,
”was an event which changed the world as anyone knew it.”Orion sat in an rather uncomfortable chair, watching as his patron went over the lesson of what the cataclysm really was. She’d asked him some time back what he knew about it, and other than the surface information that most people seemed to know, he was mostly unknowledgeable about it. Dinah let him know then and there that she would be remedying that fact.
The redheaded knight sat on a stool opposite her squire, ready to share with him the information she had within. There were two things that she required her squires to understand. The history of the Order itself, and just what led them to the live in the world they currently struggled in. Some patrons would teach their squires of gods and goddesses, but Dinah found it best to let people walk that path on their own. The Temple of All Gods provided an opportunity for each and every person in Syliras to explore the divine on their own terms. While she certainly paid her respects to several gods, she suspected Orion to not be one who followed any terribly close.
”First off, we need to understand what the situation was which led to this catastrophe. There once existed two proud nations," she began, crossing her arms as she spoke,
"Suva and Alahea were their names, and it would be an understatement to say the two countries disliked one another."Orion nodded as Dinah spoke, taking in her words. They weren't anything he'd been unaware of, but he'd never sat down and really thought through the whole like as Dinah was having him do now.
"While war never fully broke out, the two countries did engage in many conflicts, battling for territory and resources. When at peace, they were a whisper away from battle, and when at battle, they were a blink away from calm." The truth of the matter was simple. This story had been passed down from generation to generation since the Valterrian, but so much was lost that no one knew the details. A generic, broad telling was all that could be passed on. While the Knights did have their relics and books on the past, it was not something they shared openly. Beyond the knowledge they contained, just the knowledge that they held the tomes and locations of historical ruins was more than the common folk needed to know.
”After their last great conflict, the leaders of these two nations, Galifer Odalah of Suva, and Kova, Queen of Alahea worked together to broker a peace. To seal this peace, they were to be wed. No longer would they be separate nations with separate interests, but instead united as one they would stand to usher in a new era of peace, or so they hoped.”The squire raised an eyebrow as she trailed off. He knew she wanted him to bite, so he played along.
”What do you mean, or so they hoped?””Hold on, Orion, and I’ll tell you.” Dinah smiled softly, looking up to the ceiling as she mentally made sure she was covering each point.
”Yes, everything seemed to be going well. A grand wedding was held in Suva, concluding with Galifer and Kova joining as one. For a moment, it seemed there was going to be peace. But while the armies of the two nations intermingled without fighting for the first time in anyone’s memory, something very different was unfolding in Galifer’s quarters” Orion nodded, indicting he was ready for Dinah to continue.
”Things would have been so very different for all of us if Kova hadn’t caught the eye of a god,” she said somberly. If the peace had held, they would live in a much better world, a much less dangerous world. Instead, fire rained down.
”The God of Fire, of Passion, of Emotion, Ivak, had taken Kova as a lover. And although Galifar knew not of Kova’s lover, it was plain for him to see he was not her first. A rage that would only later be matched by that of an angry god.””That’s when he killed Queen Kova, right?” Dinah nodded and continued speaking.
”Kova was paraded throughout the city, naked and shamed. Her crime was pasted in blood across her bare chest, and she was taken and chained to the city gates, where Galifar would behead her. It..It spelled the end of an age.” Dinah fell silent, as though she’d been at the center of it all. Often the knight had wondered what a different world it would have been had it not happened as it had. Would she have joined a military organization? Would there have even been a need for one?
”Ivak’s fury started a chain reaction that led to Suva being left a crater in the earth. What started out as a war between nations turned into a divine war of the gods. Humankind, and all others as well were reduced to spectators. Minimal details exist of just what happened, but we do know that the God of Peace, Sylir was slain in the chaos of the battle. An angry god, for the love of a mortal, changed everything.” Orion’s brow furled as a question came to mind.
”I appreciate the tale..but..what am I supposed to get out of this?””Everything hangs in the balance, Orion. The simplest of actions can start a line of events that have a huge effect. Your fellow knights, friends, myself, or even you could seriously change the face of the world.” She paused a moment, turning to look her squire square in the eyes.
”Or maybe, just maybe, Orion, I want you to stop and think about this the next time you sleep with someone.” With a grin, Dinah hopped off her chair and made her way out of the room. [b]”Get yourself down to the training grounds. I’ll be asking you questions about our little story. It’s best you remember it.”[b/]
A sigh escaped from his lips. Negative reinforcement. His favorite.
