Cassandra Southwind Appearance Race: Human, Svefra Gender: Female Age: 19 years Birthday: 64 Summer, 494 Birthplace: Ocean, South of Falyndar Appearance: A classic example of her race, Cassandra's light brown hair is burned fair by the sun and cut haphazardly at her shoulders so that it won't swing when tied back. Her skin is similarly sunkissed and her eyes are blue. Laviku's mark moves around her body, but it tends to settle on her right arm and hand. She tends to favor browns and warm colors in her dress and jewelry, often wearing her clothes to rags before she replaces them. She does not prioritize personal hygiene or beauty, painting her eyes with ash only to seem more fierce than her soft frame and female angles would otherwise suggest. She does not humor easily, and her natural expression has settled into a sullen scowl even when her interest is piqued. Character Concept Cassandra has been raised with all of the traditional svefra values, putting family before self and duty before ambition. As a member of the Southwind pod, she also holds strength of both body and mind in high esteem; her family is known for its fortitude, bravery, and sense of adventure. She is rarely exhausted, but even when fatigue weighs her she is loath to show it. She puts her whole heart into everything she does, and is not easily swayed. Her pride is both a source of confidence and of insecurity, for she does not suffer slights easily and is more self-oriented (some might say self-centered) than her outward values might suggest. Though she does her duty and helps those who ask, she rarely does more than is asked of her and is more interested her own pursuits than others. She tires from too much social attention and is bored by theory, struggling to explain her thoughts and resorting easily to panic and anxiety. Though she is often judgmental of lifestyles that are different than her own, few would know it. She keeps mostly to herself and has learned well the price of sharing her thoughts with others. Character History Terror... and then, nothing. She had not meant to kill him. She was not sure if he had been a person, or if he had been something else, but something in her gut told her that a non-person would never have been so scared to die. He had taken her sister—not her blood sister, in the way the land-dwellers liked to distiguish, but a Southwind girl who might as well have been. He had one of those smiles that so many girls like, and the sort of elegant tongue that made them giggle. He had even cracked a grin onto Cassandra's pouting lips, but now they were shaking like her hands. Maggie was weeping, hugging her sister, mumbling into her shoulder. She had been so stupid to follow a stranger so far away from the water, but dear Cassie had saved her, thank Laviku she had saved her. Cassandra couldn't hug her back without leaving blood on her clothes. She knew how much Maggie loved that dress. She hated that man for how he had made her soil it. She didn't have to kill him, but she did. She did not meant to, but she did. And they had rewarded her for it. She was about to reach an age milestone anyway; why not celebrate? The Lia presented her with a knife and a boat, her own personal addition to the fleet. Men and women looked to her for strength and advice. Because she had saved Margaret Southwind—from what? From love? From dishonor? From the creature—no, the man—that would have stolen the most beautiful of Southwind progeny? It's almost the anniversary of the event. They went into Lhavit to buy and sell and repair. They had asked Cassandra to help choose and she had suggested it for its splendor, but truly for the promise of a distraction. She has become somewhat obsessed with death, the potential for it and the ease of it, and as a consequence has dabbled in direct worship of Dira. She has become more reckless, teasing the line between personal satisfaction and the notice of her peers. Of course, her self-duty to family and her self-preservation instincts are not entirely drowned by that single experience. Secretly she hopes to find a distraction in Lhavit, perhaps a new hobby or a new stranger. The Southwind Pod Created only a few generations ago, when Cassandra was a babe in her mother's womb, the Southwind Pod was originally named Greatwind. When she was too young to remember, a dispute caused the pod to splinter and sever, Leaving the Northwind and Southwind Pods to swear never to speak again. Neither has yet to recover its numbers, but this has only served to make the bonds between remaining members stronger than ever. Most Southwind Tavan are dusky dolphins. The pod also includes two right whale dolphins (Marina and Maggie) and a platypus (Salty).
Tavan Valory is a female dusky dolphin known for her quiet encouragement. Like Cassandra, she would rather swim at the center of the school than the front. But when they are alone she often takes the lead and brings out her svefra's smiles. Bookkeeping Skills
