5th bell, in the training grounds of the Knights of Syliran. Ryia sat alone, away from the clanking swords and bashing shields. The Knights and squires of the city dueling each other to strengthen their numbers and better themselves. The young squire had the same aim as the rest, only she wasn't as versed in combat, nor did she have the strength to properly wield the bigger weapons and large shields they carried.

Ryia found her calling in the order of mage Knights, those that practiced the use of magic to aid them in defending the city. Magic was an arcane art, and as much as it's use was good for battle, it was also a subject for study on a different level. She was taking a chance in this field, the teenager was the only one out of the Knights in her main family that were mages. There were others in the Brock blood line that were mages, but they were all few and apart.

For each family home of Knights, there was at least one mage out of the bunch, and for her family Ryia was that mage. It made her training more difficult given that both sister's weren't mages and couldn't help her in it's study. Still the proud girl would not be discouraged and sought to learn it on her own as best she could.

Ryia closed her eyes and concentrated, clearing her mind as she searched her soul to find her fight, and her will to push on, even though she was training alone. She breathed in, turning her palms upward as she produced res from the marks in her hands and concentrated on it's form and the flow if what she wished to control. She imagined a shield in her mind, focusing on the shape of the object and modeling the res into a small sized replica made of gel.

She focused on the image in her mind, continuing to trace the shape out as she tried to create it with the gel forming above her hands. Ryia opened her eyes, and lit the outer layer on fire, creating an image of a shield burning in flames. The young squire slowly stood up, holding her hands under the flaming res to keep control of it. Once she was standing, she directed her attention to the board several paces away with the iron sheet hanging from it. It was the training post for reimancy use, and with her target in sight, Ryia pushed the ball out towards the iron sheet.

There was a soft hissing sound as the ball of fire collided with the board and caused it to sway slightly. Just by looking, she could tell that it hadn't been a strong force and the tiny ball wouldn't have been but a pinch to the skin. A small burn possibly, but nothing serious. Ryia took a breath and lifted her hands again, the cool winter air blew her hair about and brought a chill to her cheeks. She needed warmth, her inter flame, fire.

"Fire, heart, air, light.."

Her voice was low, words slipping through chapped lips. Once again the teenager would calm her mind and clear her thoughts of any distractions. She breathed in and out, a mellow pace that kept her heart from racing. Ryia turned her palms upward again and started to will her res to pool from her palms. The collected res raised his above her hands in a ethereal, glowing green gel. "Fire, heart, air, light.." The chant continued as she continued to focus and create the object in her mind first before she applied it to the floating res.

Using her will, Ryia first formed the res into a ball like shape, before crushing it's form into itself to make a saucer, disc like shape that was flat on top and on the bottom. "Fire, heart, air, light.." Pushing more, the young squire extended the size of the disc so that it was slightly larger than her hand. Ryia opened her eyes and sent the disk off in a line towards the board. Sucking in a breath, she quickly flung her arms outward and and drew back on her res to draw the disc back towards her.

Ryia had stopped her chant by this time, and was concentrating on keeping her res under control. With the res pulled back half way, she thrust her arms forward to send it out again, this time in an arc towards the board. Lastly, she ignited the disc core and forced it into the board. The hissing sound was louder this time, sparks flashing from it as it swayed back and forth.

Ryia released her hold on the flow of res and allowed it to dissipate. She took in a breath and let it back out. Res manipulation was hard and tiresome, and it felt as if she were putting her all, herself into each blast leaving that much less in tact. The young squire didn't fully understand what that meant yet, but she knew that she had to find a way to use her res without tiring herself out as much. The teenager had only used a small amount and already her body was feeling the effects.

She moved closer to the the iron sheet and reached a gloved hand out to touch the panel. The new scorch marks stood out from the old and a darker layer sat atop the older burns done previously by others. Ryia looked closer and noticed the different positions where the blows had struck, and the angle at which others had skid by. Her marks were easier to see, and she could tell how far off center they were. Her aim could still use work, and that work lied in her control over res.

Turning around, the teenager faced the area apart from where she stood and watched the others. Swords, shields, and other weapons, not a mage amongst them. Mages were odd and reclusive it seemed, and even when they did train near others they were still locked in their own world. She didn't want to be that way, at least not with her sisters. They were apart of her life more than anything and she shared most things with them. Ryia had already been a recluse of sorts after her meeting with the malevolent spirit scared her soul and she hid from the world for seasons.

She was better now, stronger, and the girl was ready to return to the living and to be apart of the world again. The unknown and dark places still scared her, but she had promised herself that she would fight that feeling and over come her fears. That was another reason that she joined the Knighthood and she knew that if she could just remember that, she would be fine.

The young squire was learning more about the use of res and how it affected her. The control she had over the magic was weak at best and her range didn't carry far. What's more her res manifested slowly and took her full concentration to use it somewhat effectively. Ryia wasn't nearly ready for combat, but her purpose was to reach that level as soon as possible. She took another moment to rest before she would go back to training.

Leaning against the wall, Ryia leaned her head back and closed her eyes. It was harder for her to concentrate in the training grounds with all the noise going about, but it was a welcome noise non the less. It meant that she was where she wanted to be, among the Knights and squires of the order, the same order that her family had been in for ages. She hoped that one day she could call herself a Knight and that by then she would have control over res and would be able to use it easily and without trouble.

Ryia started to meditate again, calming her mind and clearing her thoughts of everything around her. The nose in the back faded away and so did the ground beneath her feet and the wall to her back. She was on another plain, a place where her body would float and felt weightless even with the armor on. In her mind's body, the squire could let all else go and bring her soul and body together to a relaxed state. Suddenly the door next to her swung open, and Ryia was brought back to the real world instantly.

The teenager hadn't noticed how close she was to the door, and whoever had just come out had almost smacked her behind it. She sighed softly, relief washing over her from her near death experience. Standing up from the wall, green eyes wandered towards the door and who ever had just come out. A massive bald man, clad in armor appeared, his features rough and hard, and his demeanor serious and scary. It was none other than Albrek Degan, the Warden Knight had made an appearance in the training grounds and young Ryia was awe struck.

She stood by the wall, body frozen and eyes widen. She had heard stories of the legend and the grand deeds that he had done in the past. Some of the brightest Knight around had once been his squires. He was said to be an honorable man as well as smart and strong. Ryia didn't know any of these people, but the stories all over the city and in homes as well as shops. "Hail Ser Warden." she said quite timidly. He turned to her and nodded, not a word spoken before he headed off. He was intimidating in the least and she was stolen away by the power of his presence.

There was some in the Knighthood who were the pillar of strength and embodied everything that the order stood for. Ryia hoped that some day she could be one of those few like him. She moved away from the wall and returned to center herself in front of the board. Looking down, she removed her gloves and licked the tip of her finger before she drew a circle in the center of her palm. The squire recreated the same circle on her other palm as well and held both hands up. These were to be centering points where she hoped to better focus her res.

Ryia wanted to challenge herself and find more control and strength behind her magic. What she wanted was to test the limits of her abilities so that she could better understand where she was lacking and how hard she needed to work to push herself beyond those limits. For this, she left the spot where she stood and moved further to the right where another setup was displayed identical to the first. The only difference was that this iron sheet was raised higher than the other and the setup stood further away.

It was made for more advanced use and for those with better control over their res and could put more reach behind their magic. This was what she needed to really push herself. She knew that she could hit the other board and even if it had been off center, it wouldn't have taken a lot more practice to meet the center. Skipping that small bit and going for something harder would save her that time, and help her to grow stronger all at once. The young squire could learn distance here, strength, and accuracy all in one.

Standing in front of the raised iron sheet, Ryia calmed her mind and concentrated on what she wanted to do. Lowering her gaze, the teenager turned her palm upward and willed her res to once again rise from within. "Fire, heart, air, light.." The res rose a few inches above her hand and she collected it into a ball like shape. It was a small ball that could fit on the inside of her hand if she tried to hold it. Ryia focused, her eyes on the target that was further away than the first she had attacked.

The idea was to push the res forward fast enough and with enough strength to cross the distance and attacked the iron sheet. She took a breath, maintained her focus, and with a surge of energy coming forth, Ryia pushed the ball outward towards her target and ignited the outer layer into flames. The young squire raised her hand, palm turned up as she tried to steady the ball and keep it under her control.

She pushed the ball harder, further, turning her palm towards the right and left as she tried to keep it on target. It looked good so far, and from where she stood the ball was on it's way right towards the center of her target. Ryia attempted a last push at the end and ignited the inner layer into fire just before it would go out of her reach of control. The ball of fire darted towards the iron sheet, but drifted downward and just under the mark.

The young squire released a soft breath, her frustrations showing only mildly. Ryia knew that it would take time, and she wouldn't uncover the secrets to wielding fire in a day or so. No, she understood this, but her thoughts of frustration was more about her lack of concentration than anything else. The teenager needed more focus and less fear of being burned by the fire that she tried to control. The constant fear of burning off her hands was another thing that held the girl back.

It was an entanglement of emotions, Ryia feared the dangers of using this magic, but she was also drawn to do it again and again. The fear she felt was real, but so too was the excitement that came whenever she cast her magic. This all worked together to weaken her concentration and upset the teenager's balance. But, she would try again and again until she got it right. Spreading her legs shoulder length apart, Ryia cupped her hands together and concentrated. The res seeped from her palms again, rising like steam above her cupped hands. She moved her fingers slowly as her mind worked to mold the shape of the res into a flat spear surface.

Once she was satisfied, Ryia ignited the outer layer into flames. It was a small flame, but she could easily feel the heat warming her cheeks. The squire lifted her hand upward, aiming the glowing spear at the same target that she had attempted to reach before. Sucking in a breath, her focus revived, Ryia released it all. Her breath, her energy along with the flaming pointed object. Green eyes followed the object, fingers curled as she fought to keep it on task.

It was a hard push, harder than she had tried earlier, but in the end, it was successful. The sharped flaming object pushed the distance and when she realized she had it, Ryia ignited the inner layer sending the fire point right into the iron sheet. It wasn't a perfect hit, her aim was still off center, but she had nailed her target. The young squire sighed in relief as she dropped down onto the ground to rest again. It was still so draining at the early stages, but she was sure that she would get over that as well.
