AppearanceRace: Chaktawe
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Birthday: 2nd day of the Spring season, 493 AV.
Birthplace: Eyktol
Appearance: Slate is golden-skinned, with fully black eyes and black hair, giving away his Chaktawe heritage for anyone who is even slightly familiar with the race. He is tall, pushing about 6'3, with a lanky and defined body that shows he has put some work into his physical strength. His hair is long, often pulled back into a ponytail or framing his face, and his handsome features are usually bordered by rough black stubble on his cheeks and chin, or sometimes an actual beard. The corners of his eyes have the slightest bit of wrinkle, and the rest of his face has a slightly-worn look, making him look much older than he actually is. His body is littered with scars here and there, each having a story. Another notable feature is his webbed feet, another racial trait of the Chaktawe.
Character ConceptSlate at one point was a rather quiet and withdrawn man, though his deep eyes often seemed to express a lot more than he was willing to say. He had become dependent on his captors, assuming somewhere deep inside that an owner was something he needed in order to live. Only when the opportunity to be free was offered to him did he realize that it was even a choice. He had (and still occasionally has) moments of despair and darkness from times past, and once felt that he would have no life to live when he was free. Only when he stumbled upon a stubborn young Myrian child did he seem some sort of purpose, and took this child on as his reason to live.
The child is important to him, even if it is not obvious on the surface. Puk never speaks and barely seems to like Slate, but Slate is extremely devoted to the young Myrian and their combined cause. He teaches and trains the child with a rough hand, but only because he thinks that is what they will both need to survive the planned journey.
Even though his eyes and expressions can sometimes reflect the bad things that have happened to him in the past, his new-found purpose has filled him with an almost reckless amount of life. While he can fall into depression, he can also throw himself into a task with a recklessness that is almost life-threatening, just so he can feel the rush of being alive. While the boy gives him purpose, the wild and reckless gives him life, two things he felt he has never had before. After he helps the boy, he also wishes to find his own people, to see what he is.
He could be considered a good man by some, though his morals are somewhat out of line with the norm. He has killed heartlessly when it was required of him, even if the person had done no wrong. Without an owner though, his morals are slowly being defined by those he encounters, and his natural development as a free man.
Character HistorySlate's earliest memories are of chains and a slaver caravan, somewhere he remembers being in for what seemed to be season upon season. He was a boy when he was brought to Sunberth and sold as a slave, working odd jobs for various owners as he was bought and sold some more.
His real first job was at the Muted Maiden, where the rugged man was sold to the men and women that desired him. He worked there for a short time, doing what he could to learn the trade. This particular time in his life was rather dark, changing his views and outlook on life quite a bit. Being subject to the sometimes dark whims of customers was an eye-opening experience, though in perhaps the wrong sort of way. He was certainly a bit out of place at the Maiden, and soon drew the eyes of another employer. Slate was merely out on some free time when his tall build and strong body was spotted by interested eyes, and he was soon approached. After a short talk with both him and the Muted Maiden, Slate was bought yet again, and made to work at the Plantation just outside of Sunberth. Here, his employer gave him a choice that had never really occurred to him before. If he worked hard, he would buy his freedom. If he worked hard and then someone was available to replace him, he could make his way in the world. He originally worked the fields, but when he brought up some of his other skills, he was tested as something a foot soldier for a Night Eyes enforcer. He guarded the perimeter of the plantation, detaining escape attempts and acting as something of a scout. He was never actually a part of the Night Eyes, and never asked questions about them. Perhaps that was his main appeal, how the quiet Chaktawe accepted anything commanded of him with no complaint at all.
The Plantation was where he met a young Myrian child named Puk, who was no older than 12 or 13. While younger than most slaves, his natural heritage seemed to make him strong and stubborn. While he was quiet, he did his work well. Slate was roomed with the boy, and often heard him murmuring for home in his sleep. He wanted to go back to the jungles, he said. This struck a chord somewhere inside of Slate, oddly enough. Slate talked to his captors the next day, seeing if he could work for the boy's freedom as well. His request was granted, at the expense of many more hours of hard labor for the Plantation.
Time passed, and the man was set free, along with the Myrian boy. Slate promised the boy he would take him home. While the boy didn't say a word, he still came along, Slate taking this as a silent agreement. He found out what he could about the Myrian homelands, and then began to train both himself and boy for the very long journey ahead.

Puk is a young Myrian child who appears to be no older than 11 or 12. He was encountered as a slave, working in the fields at the Plantation in Sunberth. Puk and Slate slept next to each other, and while they never socialized, Slate would often wake up to the soft sounds of the child crying out for his homelands in his sleep. Slate had been told that he could go free after a certain amount of work had been dedicated to the Plantation, but the child touched something deep inside of him. He asked his owners if he could work for Puk's freedom as well, and his wish was granted. After years of labor, the child was released along with him, and Slate promised to take Puk home. While the boy rarely says a word and barely seems to tolerate Slate's presence, he has tagged along, apparently placing some level of faith into the wayward Chaktawe.
