AppearanceRace: Drykas
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Birthday: 12th of Summer, 494
Birthplace: Endrykas
Appearance: Imala is a near mirror image of her mother, with the same darkly tanned skin and brown hair, and hazel eyes. She is tall for a woman at 5’10”, and weighs in at 155 lbs. She often wears her long, dark hair loose with no more adornment than a single white wrap in remembrance of her mother. On special occasions, she will obtain the assistance of other women in her pavilion to braid her hair into intricate knots. She bears an elaborate windmark down the outer side of her left thigh.
Character ConceptImala had always been just a little bit different from other Drykas - just a little bit odd. While the rest of her family loudly debated the merits of one herb over another for treating a certain ailment, Imala was content to sit and listen. Fiercely curious, she was never afraid to ask questions when she had them, but she had never adopted the Drykas habit of saying anything that came to her mind. At first, her family and the surrounding pavilions had merely thought her slow. But when she began to show promise as a medic and herbalist - and that she did indeed have wits to spare - the seeds of mistrust began to grow.
The Nightwind pavilion was just as tightly knit as any other on the Sea of Grass, but it became known that there was something
not quite right about the young Nightwind girl. She did not behave as expected. She did not share her thoughts and feelings as freely as others might, she did not voice her opinions as loudly. Her family loved her just as much as any of their other children, and she had earned her windmark the same as any other of her Clan, but that did not stop her from standing just slightly apart from them. It wasn’t much; but among the Drykas, it mattered.
Imala did not lack the passions of her people, however - just their manner of expression. She was fascinated with the healing arts, herbalism, and medicine. She followed her father’s footsteps in his devotion to Rak’keli - some might have said that she was more devoted to the distant goddess than to her own Clan. And though she did not always show it, she bore a deep love for her elder and only full brother.
Character HistoryImala was born on the 12th of Summer, 424, to Liama Nightwind. She was Liama’s second, born ten years after her brother Gimor; no longer in her prime, Liama had been unprepared and unequipped for the surprise of another child. She died in childbirth, leaving the Ankal of their pavilion with only one wife.
The youngest of the Nightwind pavilion grew up sheltered and protected by her three elder brothers: Gimor, Jovin, and Byorin. The latter two were born of her father’s second wife, Morrada, who was as fair as Liama had been dark. Jovin and Byorin both shared their mother’s coloring, as well as her kind spirit. Morrada raised Imala as if she had been born of her own womb, though the two never became particularly close. Imala gravitated more toward Gimor, hungry for stories of her own mother’s doings, interests, passions. The two were inseparable until Gimor took a wife from the Emerald Clan, in the hopes of improving their pavilion’s faltering hunting prowess. The ploy worked, but Imala and the new Emerald beauty often came into conflict.
In her fourteenth year, Imala was chosen by her first strider - a white mare called Miri. A few among her family had harbored secret fears that the strange girl would never be chosen, but she became a true member of the Opal Clan that day, and her mother's Yvas decorations found their new home.
The quiet Drykas girl began to learn medicine and herb lore from her father and grandmother at a young age. She learned quickly and asked many questions - the way she could help a wound to knit closed or a sickness to fade was fascinating. As her training progressed, she was permitted to treat some of the more minor injuries that came to her family pavilion for treatment: a shallow cut or a dry cough. Most found that she did not have the kindest bedside manner, and that she often treated her patients more as frayed tents in need of mending than actual flesh-and-blood humans.
For the time being, Imala continues to learn of medicine and herbs from her family. She studies wholeheartedly, often to the point of forgetting to eat or sleep. And though she is not known as the sweetest of Drykas medics, at least she hopes to one day become known as one of the most skilled.
