Concussion?

Postby Leviathan on August 25th, 2010, 10:35 am

Hey everyone. I'm going to make this short, but I would definitely like some input if you guys have any professional or personal experience you can give me.

Last Wednesday, the 18th of August, I took a pretty decent hit to the head. When I was hit, my legs gave out and my ears were ringing (ringing lasted roughly five minutes I'd say). I say that merely to help kind of judge how hard I may have been hit.

I have no previous experience with concussions or anything, but since then I have had this headache that is there more often than it isn't, I can't sleep very well (takes a while to fall asleep, waking up in the middle of the night), and little things have been slipping my mind fairly often (though I've never been one to remember such things very well).

What I'm wanting to know is, what are the chances of me having a concussion, or what should I look for?

Any help would be appreciated.
Bad News Everybody. School is picking up, Exams are beginning to happen, homework is growing time consuming, I may soon be evicted from my apartment, I'm dealing with severe and physical fights among several of my best friends, and I can't seem to find a time to get much needed sleep. I'm terribly sorry, but don't expect to see much of me for a long while.

Revi, go to the doctor. A free clinic, something, but you need to get your head looked at immediately. It may be nothing, but with consistent, persistent symptoms like that you need to get yourself checked out as soon as possible.

I agree whole-heartedly. You should see a doctor as soon as possible. Internal damage can take hours or days to manifest. Please take care. :(

You have the symptoms of a concussion, which admittedly are symptoms shared by other kinds of head trauma. You could be fine and it could go away but it would be risky not to see a doctor.

I personally have had 5 concussions, and I would say that you did indeed get one. As the others have said, I am glad you are going to see a doctor. Keep us informed.

Concussion?

Something else to remember... blows to the head especially can also cause internal bleeding that can form clots. They need to take a pic of the damaged area and check for these. A psudoaneurysm is where a blood vessel in the cerebrum balloons or leaks (from the trauma) and can burst loose as a clot... these things travel through your body at high rates of speed and can stop your heart or cause you to stroke out and possibly die. So blows to the head always merit images and doctor visits. Always. Don't mess around and good luck at the doctors.

Concussion?

Postby Korgeta on August 29th, 2010, 8:32 pm

I had a accident similar though since I work at a hospital I was ordered to see casualty in case it was any worse (and who am I to question a nurse?! I'm only a domestic!) Anyway, Leviathan if there are no line fractures, if you hadn't blacked out or hadn't had any bleeding then you'll be fine but see your GP in case.

Though DON'T take paracetamol's, they only serve to mask the pain for a few hours, not get rid of it. Stress also keeps the Symptoms of Concussion ongoing and can last for upto a few weeks, if your working take annual leave and book in a hotel and relax at a spa or whatever. It will quicken the time to recover but expect to grin and bear over this for a bit.
