Race: Drykas Birthday & Age : Winter 12 492, Age 19 Gender: Male Languages: Pavi – Fluent Grassland Sign – Fluent Denen is not the strongest of beings. He's rather thin, though those long, slender limbs are stronger than they look. His build is thin and lanky, almost to the point of being bony and unhealthy, save for the rather soft lines and curves of his hips and shapely legs. Still, he moves with surprising grace, and he holds himself as proudly as the horses of the lands upon which he lives. His features are proud. High, pronounced cheekbones and a straight, aquiline nose define his face, coupled with full, rose hued lips. He has a good, firm jaw, and is always ready to flash a quick, playful smile. He has sparking blue eyes, which always seem to hold some sort of mischief. His skin is rather pale, marked with few scars, as he is not much of a warrior, though he has a thick, dark tattoo (his Windmark) creeping up his back in the form of a tree. The roots spread across his lower back and buttocks, and the trunk reaches up his spine, before spreading into a canopy across his shoulders. Den's hair is dark, and reaches to his shoulders, though he tends to wear it with a slight quaff in the front, kept in place by a knot, and allowing for several strands to fall into his face when he is buffeted by winds or active. Recently, Denen got a new set of Windmarks on his pelvis. Personality A generally happy young man, Denen is the sort who enjoys the company of others. He lives passionately, and just as well as those who can hear. He does not think of his disability as a handicap, but rather considers it a blessing, as it heightens his other senses. He has an excellent sense of touch, one that serves him well in the area of healing. Denen is an intelligent, albeit humble young man. He does not think much of himself, seeing his first concern, always as those around him. He has no aspirations of greatness, and believes that helping those around him is the best thing he could ever achieve. He loves laughter more than anything in the world, and would happily swear by its healing powers. In this light, he has an excellent sense of humor, and is little bothered when he is the brunt of jokes. The young man is slow to anger, having a patient nature, one that has been cultured from the impulsive, fiery burn in his childhood. Though still young, life has taught him the value of a cool and level head. It takes a great deal to anger him, but once his fuse is lit, he is as wild as the fires that ravage the Sea of Grass. In other areas of his life, however, he is incredibly passionate, believing it best to live his existence to the fullest and openly. He is not shy in any way, and has an intense, burning curiosity. It is this curiosity that often gets Denen into trouble. Being a bit foolhardy in his braveness, he tends to approach new situations without contemplating the consequences. Often times, this results in his finding himself in places or circumstances he would prefer to avoid. He never shies away from a challenge, even if the odds seem stacked against him. Loyalty and dedication are incredibly important to the young Drykas. There is nothing more important to Denen than many things. He is fiercely loyal to those who deserve it, and though not one for close, physical combat, he is an enemy one should not like to have. When those he cares for are hurt or threatened in any way, easy-going, laid back Denen becomes a different person entirely. Interests Storytelling: Denen's favorite pastime is telling stories, whether those passed down by his people or those he makes up off the top of his head. He likes to spice up old tales, to make them more enjoyable for his audiences, and is known for his elaborate gestures when he is weaving a story. Healing: More than just a hobby, healing is what Denen is most passionate about. He is willing to give his all to help those who are hurt, and hates to see his efforts fail in this area. His studies have allowed for him to gain a rather good base in his knowledge of the art, and he hopes to improve himself as he gets older and gains more experience. Dreams: Denen has a keen interest in dreams, as he finds this to be the best place to get content for his stories. He likes discussing, sharing, and comparing his dreams and the dreams of others. Goals Denen has one major goal, and that is to become a great healer. He is still very young, but working incredibly hard to reach that goal. Should he fail, however, he has a backup plan of becoming a storyteller. Stone Brokensong was a man of fine means, a gifted healer of the Opal clan and one who was well liked and known. In his youth, he married a young woman named Pebble of the Rivereyes pavilion, who gave him six children, four boys and two girls. Four years after their last child was born, he took another wife, Jada Yellowrock . The two struggled to deliver a live child, but after many miscarriages, and three stillbirths, they gave up hope. At the age of forty, Stone married again, a pretty girl of only sixteen years. She was called Yew Drivenearth. Not two weeks after Yew entered Stone's pavilion, she became pregnant. Stone celebrated this fact, while Jada burned with envy. She worked her way into friendship with Yew, and caused the girl to believe that she hoped the very best for her and her child, all the while plotting Yew's demise. Jada convinced Yew to place her child in her care, should she die during childbirth. When the day at last came, Yew gave birth to a tiny baby boy. Denen. Despite her youth, she was strong, and the labor left her exhausted, but healthy still. It was a shock to all when the girl died in the night, holding her little baby in her arms. It was Jada who discovered her, and who mourned her loss the greatest. She took Denen as her own son, raising him, she said, as her dear Yew would have wanted. Denen, however, was constantly ill during the early years of his life, prone to ear infections which led to countless nights of screaming and crying. When he was four, he fell prey to an infection so violent and a fever so intense that it robbed him of his hearing. He never fully grew out of his propensity to ear infections, which resulted in his generally wearing a scarf around his head to keep them covered. His features, however, were a near mirror of Yew's. Despite his inability to hear, he proved to be a happy, playful child, though he kept largely to himself and the horses, and was, generally, ignored by his older siblings. He grew up blissfully unaware that his mother was murdered by the woman who raised him, though he was aware of the pain that dwelt in Jada's eyes when she looked upon him. At the age of six, Denen was chosen by Yew's Cyphrus Strider, Reth. The horse became his dearest companion, and helped the boy immeasurably to blossom from a shy, awkward child into an open, friendly youth. It was through this that Denen discovered his love of telling stories, as they initially began as stories of Reth's imaginary adventures told to the other children. His life was a simple one, growing up learning the ways and customs of his people, soaking in and absorbing anything and everything that he could. His talents bloomed in the line of medicines, and he began to focus himself on training in that area. He spoke often of trying to find a way to help those women who had recently given birth, to provide ways to raise their chances of survival, claiming that doing so would honor his mother's memory In his fifteenth year, torn by guilt at what she had done, Jada took her own life, taking the secret of her crime to her grave. Denen, who had always been on the outskirts of his family, found himself very much alone. He continued to live at his father's pavilion for two years, trying to find a niche within his family, but the urge to travel and learn more came heavily upon the young man, and he began to make plans and preparations to set out and see the world beyond the Opal tribe. |
