Jorin wasn’t used to picking out the Alpha in pack animals. Though his guess was as good as hers - her father may have been a wolf, but he never really talked much about being a wolf. There was a glance of relief coming from him however and she had no idea why he was feeling relieved. There wasn’t time to question him however as the injured dog snarled. It wouldn’t be long before they would try again, and given that Jorin was injured it really didn’t sit well with her. The black dog was an issue, but it did seem more wary of them than the supposed leader.

It only took a tick for the injured Alpha to charge Jorin once again. She watched as he swung the staff, only to miss the dogs face and land a blow to abdomen. Certainly not enough to drive the dog off, but it must have stung seeing as her arrow was still embedded low as well. She was keenly aware of the black dog, and she had moved her last arrow from her bow hand to the string, preparing to fire if she needed to. It crouched low, and she knew it was going to charge at her while the other dog focused Jorin. She readied herself to pull the string back, but Jorin moved before she did.

He swung the staff, managing to catch the dog in the throat and cause it to back off, but Rinya saw the mistake before he did - and she’d be lying if Jorin’s protective action didn’t set off slight irritation at him. While they were in fairly close range, the arrow would still do the damage needed to at least get the dog to back off. His protective stance of her left him open… and by the blood that was starting to seep through his shirt, the dogs were most certainly going to smell blood. "Jorin!" Rinya half snapped in a warning, and half in pure agitation that he seemed to think she needed him to protect her.

The alpha dog took the opening with a wounded animal’s kind of speed. The dog drew out Jorin’s movements, and he wasn’t able to keep up. The dog lunged, and Jorin just barely got the staff between him and the dog’s mouth. But the dog knocked the two of them to the ground and Rinya hissed through her teeth. He shouted that she should take the black dog while he preoccupied this one, but she knew better. The black dog was already circling Jorin. With his staff being pretty much immobilized by the injured alpha and the smell of injured prey, she might not have time to really strike before he lunged for an open appendage… or even his neck. And with Jorin’s shoulder throbbing out pain, he wouldn’t be able to hold the alpha off for long either.

Making a split tick decision, she shoved her bow and arrow into her right hand. Her left slipped down to her side where the so called ‘assassin's’ dagger sat on her hip. The two of them had been close to begin with, the dog was literally within touching distance. The dogs were so concerned about the kill, their hunger, they probably figured she’d flee like the rest of their pack. With a shuddered breath, she yanked the blade from her hip sheath, blade pointing downward in her grasp. She had no idea how to use the blade, but she did have a decent idea of places to hit that might cause significant damage.

Aiming between ribs however was not easy, and the dog’s neck was too hard to hit with the dog struggling with the staff between it’s jaws. The grip on the blade was probably too tight, but she had no idea otherwise. Lifting the blade high in the air, she brought the blade downwards as hard and fast as she could… hoping the dog didn’t jump out of the way and cause her to impale her mate instead. The blade landed thickly between the dog’s shoulder blade and neck. The blade itself slid into the skin easily, the dog was so thin it didn’t have much muscle to cut through.

The reaction was instant however. The dog released Jorin’s staff and howled sharply in pain, yanking itself away from her and the blade. Only the blade was still buried in his body and her grip on the blade had not lessened despite the blow. She could feel the strain in her wrist, muscles trying desperately to hang onto the dagger. There was a sharp twist in her wrist however, bending almost far enough to break her wrist before the blade finally slipped from the dog’s body. Rinya hissed sharply in pain as her wrist resisted the twist, releasing the blade and letting it fall to the ground covered in the dogs blood. Pain echoed in her wrist, but a quick twist of her wrist in a circle at least told her it wasn’t broken.

The black dog had made to lunge at the both of them as the dagger hit the alpha’s body, but ended up tumbling over his leader instead, who was still trying to flee whatever pain might be throbbing from his own shoulder. Instinctively Rinya dropped her bow, fingers fumbling quickly for the arrow just in case. The dagger had fallen next to Jorin’s body, on the far side of him where she couldn’t reach without having to lunge herself. Her left wrist ached too much to hold the arrow, so her right hand would have to do if they decided to try again. The blood coming from the dog’s shoulder however seemed to massively slow the dog. He carried his right paw upwards off the ground, seemingly unable to put any weight on it.

It seemed that was enough. The alpha was bleeding heavily as it made a beeline for the brush. The black dog didn’t seem to need another warning either, backing away from the two of them - all the while growling until it too disappeared from sight. Rinya remained standing, her left wrist held to her chest and her right hand ready to swing for what felt like forever. In reality it was probably only chimes, in which Jorin finally pulled himself up off the ground. After what felt like forever, she groaned sharply and slide the arrow back into her quiver.

"Don’t do that again Jorin." Despite her wrist, she lifted both her hands to his shirt so she could lift it far enough up to at least glance at his bleeding wounds. "You over extended yourself… it could have killed us both." Rinya knew she was being a little harsh, but she couldn’t help it. The stress of the fight, the ache from both his shoulder and her wrist, and the fact that he had nearly gotten himself killed because he thought he needed to protect her caused her anxiety to show. Her hands were shaking, but she was too busy examining his wounds to really notice.

"They look like they’re bleeding worse than the actual wound is." There was a small amount of relief that pulsed through her. "But we’ll just have to get them clean to be sure." Reaching down, she snagged her bow off the ground - hesitating for just a moment over the blade covered in blood before she snagged that too. Shoving the dagger carefully into the hip sheath, she started down the path towards Riverfall. "Let’s get out of here before something else catches the scent of blood."

Jorin heard Rinya's cry of warning a tick too late. He felt a surge of agitation and exasperation from her, along with the expected concern as he was bowled over. In retrospect his swing was ill-advised. Rinya had by the looks of it already drawn another arrow and was in the midst of lining up to shoot when she shouted her warning, which meant if he'd just stayed where he was, it was probable she'd have struck the animal with her arrow and driven it off.

But Jorin would be lying if he said he was fully thinking at that moment. His bondmate, mate, and wife was in immediate danger, and all he could think about was protecting her. He was aware that had he been thinking less emotionally and more rationally, he'd have realized that his immediate desire to protect had the unfortunate consequence of placing himself in danger, but that sort of clear-headed thinking in the midst of a crisis required experience. Experience Jorin did not have.

In any case, Jorin's attention was focused primarily on the angry dog looking to eat him, and the weight of the beast on his chest. Despite the fact that the animal was clearly malnourished and underfed, it still had some heft to it, and he could not easily shove it off. Not least of which, he could smell and hear the black dog circling the outskirts of their tussle, looking for a prime opportunity to jump in and take a bite out of him. This was looking more and more like a bad idea.

Jorin did his utmost to try to hold the dog at bay, trying to knee the beast in the chest a few times. He felt the satisfying heavy impact of his knee connecting, but frowned in disappointment when there was no noticeable effect. The dog continued to growl and snarl, its jaws still firmly clamped onto his weapon and its weight still pressing down on him from above. It was hopeless - he was too weakened and his position on his back gave him precious little leverage to work with. Ultimately, what Sohryn at the Kendoka Sasaran had said was absolutely true - being knocked down in combat was tantamount to death.

That was when Rinya suddenly leaped into the fray, plunging her dagger deep into the Alpha's back, just missing it's spine as the point embedded itself into the space between the neck and shoulder. The effect was immediate. With a yowl, the dog detached and tore itself away, and Jorin felt a sharp jolt of pain that did not come from himself. He swore internally - despite his best efforts, his wife ended up hurt anyway. It was all his fault, but Jorin had no time to self-recriminate as he scrambled onto his elbows, taking a few gasping breaths.

Rinya's hiss of pain drew Jorin's attention and he noticed her cradle her wrist gingerly, but the fact that she could still twist it meant that it wasn't broken. The dull pain throbbed across the bond and pounded in time with Jorin's own shoulder, but the angry growl of the dogs drew his attention back to them. It seemed that the black dog had collided with its Alpha when it had tried to jump in at them and that caused them both to tumble away. Rinya seemed to have done some fairly significant damage to the alpha dog, as it limped and stumbled into the brush and out of sight.

Its compatriot put up a brave front, but without its Alpha to provide it courage and direction, it quickly followed its heavily injured companion into the grass. For several chimes, a heavy silence fell upon them as Rinya held her other hand at her chest, ready to swing once more if needed. But besides the echoing yipping of the retreating dogs, all was quiet on the desolate path back to Riverfall.

Rinya then turned to Jorin, and she stared at him rather severely as she bluntly told him to never do what he tried to do once again. Jorin blinked. Could he make such a promise? He had a feeling they would have to discuss this at greater length when they got home. The simple truth was, Jorin was not sure if he could make such a promise. Rinya was so important to him - she was his everything. If she was in danger, could he really think rationally? Or would he follow his first instinct - to protect her, at any cost?

"I... but it was trying to..." Rinya, however, had already moved forward to lift his shirt up to inspect his wound. As she did so, she mentioned that his action could have cost both of them their lives. Jorin wanted to argue that wasn't technically true - Rinya was never in any real danger. If she had to, she always had the option to transform and fly. The dogs would not be able to attack an osprey in flight.

But deep in his heart, he knew his bondmate and wife would never abandon him. Even though she could have flown away, didn't mean she would have. She was right - if she hadn't been quick enough with her dagger, they would have quite possibly both been killed. And it was rather embarrassing for Jorin really. Rinya had faced the same number of dogs he did. She killed or drove off both of hers without receiving a single scratch in return. He could barely hold his two off, and was knocked down twice for his troubles.

"I... I'm sorry..." Jorin wasn't even sure what he was apologizing for, but he felt the need to. He could feel the pain throbbing through the bond, a reminder that his wife had been injured protecting him. The worst part was, it was probably entirely unnecessary too. If he hadn't... if only he'd been able to...

Even Rinya's relieved discovery that his wounds were mostly superficial was not enough to lift Jorin's spirits. Seasons of practice at the Kendoka. Days upon days of hard work, and for what? In the end, he still needed saving. He was still nowhere near as good as he needed to be. Jorin was emphatically not an aggressive man, it was true. But he realized that, when it came down to it, losing Rinya was simply unacceptable. He'd do whatever it took to protect her.

Jorin noted Rinya's slight hesitation after she'd snagged her bow from the ground. He followed her eyes to the small, bloodsoaked dagger lying in the grass. Jorin had always hated the weapon - its wicked blade a constant reminder of its nature as a killing machine. But in the end, that sharp edge had saved his life. If Rinya had not acquired this weapon, it was entirely possible that death would have claimed them both.

"Yeah," he sighed. "Your hand..." he noted, reaching out and gingerly stroking Rinya's wrist. The pain was definitely coming from it, and he suspected it was from when the dog tried to twist away. It must have tweaked her wrist something awful, though he didn't know the specifics.

"We should both probably get ourselves looked at," he concluded, agreeing with Rinya's assessment they should leave before some other wild animal decided to make a meal of them. "Come on, Rinya. Let's go home."

Home.

Jorin suspected, they would have a lot to talk about once they got there. But for now, he was just glad they were alive to do so.

Very fun to get a glimpse inside Jorin's thoughts, as he's an interesting character. I've never actually seen a thread where a PC used a staff as a weapon, so it was a first for me! Good read, keep up the good work.

Though I try my hardest to award you what you deserve, I may occasionally mess things up! If there's something you'd like to discuss about your grade, then please don't hesitate to send me a PM and I'll be happy to work things out with you.

Because of RL issues and a lack of energy that I can devote to Mizahar, I've decided to step down as an AS. I'm sorry to leave so suddenly, but it's truly been fun while it lasted. Hopefully I can come back some day.
