Jorin wasn’t used to picking out the Alpha in pack animals. Though his guess was as good as hers - her father may have been a wolf, but he never really talked much about being a wolf. There was a glance of relief coming from him however and she had no idea why he was feeling relieved. There wasn’t time to question him however as the injured dog snarled. It wouldn’t be long before they would try again, and given that Jorin was injured it really didn’t sit well with her. The black dog was an issue, but it did seem more wary of them than the supposed leader.
It only took a tick for the injured Alpha to charge Jorin once again. She watched as he swung the staff, only to miss the dogs face and land a blow to abdomen. Certainly not enough to drive the dog off, but it must have stung seeing as her arrow was still embedded low as well. She was keenly aware of the black dog, and she had moved her last arrow from her bow hand to the string, preparing to fire if she needed to. It crouched low, and she knew it was going to charge at her while the other dog focused Jorin. She readied herself to pull the string back, but Jorin moved before she did.
He swung the staff, managing to catch the dog in the throat and cause it to back off, but Rinya saw the mistake before he did - and she’d be lying if Jorin’s protective action didn’t set off slight irritation at him. While they were in fairly close range, the arrow would still do the damage needed to at least get the dog to back off. His protective stance of her left him open… and by the blood that was starting to seep through his shirt, the dogs were most certainly going to smell blood. "Jorin!" Rinya half snapped in a warning, and half in pure agitation that he seemed to think she needed him to protect her.
The alpha dog took the opening with a wounded animal’s kind of speed. The dog drew out Jorin’s movements, and he wasn’t able to keep up. The dog lunged, and Jorin just barely got the staff between him and the dog’s mouth. But the dog knocked the two of them to the ground and Rinya hissed through her teeth. He shouted that she should take the black dog while he preoccupied this one, but she knew better. The black dog was already circling Jorin. With his staff being pretty much immobilized by the injured alpha and the smell of injured prey, she might not have time to really strike before he lunged for an open appendage… or even his neck. And with Jorin’s shoulder throbbing out pain, he wouldn’t be able to hold the alpha off for long either.
Making a split tick decision, she shoved her bow and arrow into her right hand. Her left slipped down to her side where the so called ‘assassin's’ dagger sat on her hip. The two of them had been close to begin with, the dog was literally within touching distance. The dogs were so concerned about the kill, their hunger, they probably figured she’d flee like the rest of their pack. With a shuddered breath, she yanked the blade from her hip sheath, blade pointing downward in her grasp. She had no idea how to use the blade, but she did have a decent idea of places to hit that might cause significant damage.
Aiming between ribs however was not easy, and the dog’s neck was too hard to hit with the dog struggling with the staff between it’s jaws. The grip on the blade was probably too tight, but she had no idea otherwise. Lifting the blade high in the air, she brought the blade downwards as hard and fast as she could… hoping the dog didn’t jump out of the way and cause her to impale her mate instead. The blade landed thickly between the dog’s shoulder blade and neck. The blade itself slid into the skin easily, the dog was so thin it didn’t have much muscle to cut through.
The reaction was instant however. The dog released Jorin’s staff and howled sharply in pain, yanking itself away from her and the blade. Only the blade was still buried in his body and her grip on the blade had not lessened despite the blow. She could feel the strain in her wrist, muscles trying desperately to hang onto the dagger. There was a sharp twist in her wrist however, bending almost far enough to break her wrist before the blade finally slipped from the dog’s body. Rinya hissed sharply in pain as her wrist resisted the twist, releasing the blade and letting it fall to the ground covered in the dogs blood. Pain echoed in her wrist, but a quick twist of her wrist in a circle at least told her it wasn’t broken.
The black dog had made to lunge at the both of them as the dagger hit the alpha’s body, but ended up tumbling over his leader instead, who was still trying to flee whatever pain might be throbbing from his own shoulder. Instinctively Rinya dropped her bow, fingers fumbling quickly for the arrow just in case. The dagger had fallen next to Jorin’s body, on the far side of him where she couldn’t reach without having to lunge herself. Her left wrist ached too much to hold the arrow, so her right hand would have to do if they decided to try again. The blood coming from the dog’s shoulder however seemed to massively slow the dog. He carried his right paw upwards off the ground, seemingly unable to put any weight on it.
It seemed that was enough. The alpha was bleeding heavily as it made a beeline for the brush. The black dog didn’t seem to need another warning either, backing away from the two of them - all the while growling until it too disappeared from sight. Rinya remained standing, her left wrist held to her chest and her right hand ready to swing for what felt like forever. In reality it was probably only chimes, in which Jorin finally pulled himself up off the ground. After what felt like forever, she groaned sharply and slide the arrow back into her quiver.
"Don’t do that again Jorin." Despite her wrist, she lifted both her hands to his shirt so she could lift it far enough up to at least glance at his bleeding wounds. "You over extended yourself… it could have killed us both." Rinya knew she was being a little harsh, but she couldn’t help it. The stress of the fight, the ache from both his shoulder and her wrist, and the fact that he had nearly gotten himself killed because he thought he needed to protect her caused her anxiety to show. Her hands were shaking, but she was too busy examining his wounds to really notice.
"They look like they’re bleeding worse than the actual wound is." There was a small amount of relief that pulsed through her. "But we’ll just have to get them clean to be sure." Reaching down, she snagged her bow off the ground - hesitating for just a moment over the blade covered in blood before she snagged that too. Shoving the dagger carefully into the hip sheath, she started down the path towards Riverfall. "Let’s get out of here before something else catches the scent of blood."
