Seer of Avalis, Perfumer of Mura I see what you see, I feel what you feel, I am what you are
Basic Information Race: Konti Birthday & Age: 57 years- born 22nd day of Spring, 543 AV Gender: Female
Physical Description Nari is not unusual as far as her Konti appearance is concerned. She is of an average height for her kind, standing at nearly five feet, five inches- five feet, six inches if she stands on her toes- and her weight is approximately that of a large boulder- one hundred seventeen pounds. Her skin is as light and fair as most of the Konti women, though it has been caressed by the sun during her years gathering plants and flowers from which to make her perfumes. She is small boned, with tiny ankles and wrists- her frame sinuous with few curves of which to speak. Though an adult, she would hardly look it to a person of human (or other short-lived race) descent.
Two thin rows of glimmering ivory scales are interwoven from the top of her toes and up her legs, where they meet around her midsection with one row above her belly button and one below before continuing to branch out behind her arms and extending to the tips of her fingers- a complex pattern gifted to her from the sea god Laviku along with the gills carved finely beneath her ears. She has also been touched by the goddess Avalis, who has in her infinite grace given Nari a gnosis mark in the shape of a lily on the back of her neck.
Her hair is reminiscent of the sun’s rays reflected off Silver Lake just after dawn and falls straight and smooth to rest between her shoulder blades. Unless sleeping or meditating, she normally ties it back at the nape of her neck to keep it out of her way. Her eyes, tilting up at the far corners and framed by black lashes, are the same steely blue as the overcast summer sky. Intense they could be, if ever she focused them on a single point. Instead, her gaze is often bland- drawn inward and directed toward a subject only she can see.
Her hands are nimble, with quick fingers and smooth gestures. Never do they move with restless or erratic emotion, she has other nervous tics for that (chewing her hair, biting her lip, etc). She grows her nails long by her own vanity. They are ever being cleaned of the dirt, wax, dye powder, dry leaves, etc. stemming from the work she does. She knows her time would be better spent without them, and yet she cannot bear to trim them down.
Character Concept Nari doesn’t view the world the same way as many in Mizahar. The past and future mean little to her, except as they apply to harvesting of her plants- and the flow of Konti to and from the Isle. Her plants, of course, are her livelihood- and her gift from Avalis has given her a unique ability that she uses daily to keep an eye on those Konti whose ‘Call’ has summoned them away from home.
Years of constant use of her gift, however, has caused a change in Nari’s manner from that of a curious, sweet child to a distant-eyed young woman who needs meditation to focus on even the daily tasks of life. Since becoming an adult, she has viewed most of the mundane chores and activities in Mura as trivial and has put them out of her mind so often that she must now meditate in order to remember, let alone concentrate, on them. Though her mind does not necessarily wander, it automatically goes through the motions of daily life with little need for Nari’s attention. She is forgetful and dislikes to be touched by anyone, fearing that one of her senses will be involuntarily shifted into the other person’s body. Her thoughts, whatever they may be, are often hidden behind a bland stare unless directly questioned. Violence and anger alone catch her attention enough to cow her, and in the face of these, all composure will crumble until she is little more than the distracted child she appears.
In most cases, she is soft-spoken and unconsciously kind- often found walking alone (or swimming near) the shore dividing the city of Mura between land and water and handing out a flower or a copper miza to any children see may see. She occasionally mumbles to herself, especially when working, and can be considered a little ‘off.’ This distraction, as she likes to call it, is balanced out by thorough moments of attentiveness that seem to spin her personality one hundred eighty degrees to that of a shrewd, insightful woman who is not afraid to speak her mind- usually after a meditation session or during a ‘viewing’ with her gift.
She cannot read or write beyond the basics but respects those who have those talents, the same as she values beautiful music though she cannot make it. She knew from a young age that she was not meant to play an instrument or write a story, her interest was not in it nor was her talent. She moves with a sort of grace, but dancing or martial arts are not for her, either. She dabbles in the uses of plant life- colors, fragrances, medicines, and perhaps a combination of the three. These are her goals, when she recalls them, as well as children to raise and someone to love- if only until her daughters are born. She has no illusions as to her own allure; she has little to offer any suitor that he could not get somewhere else and much in her personality that would put off the majority of men.
Character History Most of Nari’s childhood was nothing of interest. She was born from Lilis, her Konti mother whom she has always lived with, and Arnac, a human who visited the White Isle once a year with trinkets for his little girl. Lilis was a Konti weaver who sold a few of her works to Arnac, and Arnac was a trader who sailed around Mizahar to make his fortune. They never had any other children together, though Lilis had two more daughters from another man. Arnac never told Nari if he had another family somewhere, distracting her from her questions with stories of far away places, the most beautiful and detailed being about Avanthal. Nari always wanted to go with him, to sail the seas and visit port cities, but her mother forbade it. Instead, Nari turned her attention to the study of languages and learned both Common (fluently) and Vanti (sparsely) in hopes that someday she would go with him and see the beautiful Vanthan city herself. One year, Arnac did not return and it was assumed that he had died.
Years ago, sometimes so distant in Nari’s mind as to be more imagination than memory, she was visited by the goddesss Avalis, most likely in a dream. Avalis spoke of Nari’s compassion and selflessness, her inquisitive nature and desire to see all manner of plants throughout Mizahar. A gift was given to her- a particular kind of sight. She may have never left the White Isle herself, but she has seen the busy streets of Zeltiva full of humans and other races, smelled exotic cooked animals she has never seen, smelled flowers and oils she never knew existed, and heard music so rough and thunderous as to give her headaches for days.
She has, since first becoming an adult, been fundamental to the minds of the mothers of those Konti heeding ‘The Call.’ By touching biological material such as hair or blood, she can use one of the senses of the owner- most often sight though she cannot exactly choose. She can see which stage of the journey the woman is on, as well as if she has encountered storms on the sea, brigands during the overland travel, or is having more tedious difficulties. Just the knowledge of where their daughters are is often enough to ease the minds of many Konti family members.
This comfort has become a ritual in Nari’s life, one that she has used to put off the rising urgency of her own ‘Call.’ Her desire to create more exotic and alluring fragrances from plants not found on the White Isle, as well as find a mate with whom to create a daughter of her own, has been put off year after year. While it may have began as a tribute to her goddess and a gesture of thoughtfulness toward her race- it soon became an addiction to see the lines of concern ease from around the eyes of her friends and family, to know she had given relief to those around her. It is an addiction she must strictly control and one with serious consequences on her own state of mind.
She has just recently decided to move out of her mother’s home and open a shop with her plants and fragrances she makes. She does not yet know if this is the first step to fulfilling her own ‘Call’ or if it’s just asserting her adulthood, but she needed a change- so she made one.
