Just another idle day... or is it?

(This is a thread from Mizahar's fantasy role playing forum. Why don't you register today? This message is not shown when you are logged in. Come roleplay with us, it's fun!)

This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Hi there!

Feel free to jump in and have some fun. This is mainly a social thread, with zero plans at the moment :D But I hope I can have Nyxie discover either some secrets to slave trading, or the political state of the Dynasties, through conversation. If you have any other ideas, don’t hesitate to PM me!

60th Day of Spring, 514 AV

Being nineteen has its perks. Nyxie loved finally having her weekends to herself, and away from the Draers. She was especially glad that her father allowed her to travel to Glass Beach on her own, instead of having to drag Erich along like when they were children. Sure, the trip may take a little more than 5 bells, but the solitary serenity was always worth the wait.

Additional freedom isn't the only thing that maturity gave her; Nyxie smiled at her reflection in the water, realizing how drastically her body has changed. She wasn't a flat-chested, skinny little Svefran girl anymore. No... Nyxie was turning into the body of a woman. The water undulated with the image of a slender figure, with slight curves in just the right places, ivory pale skin, and cherry red hair flowing down to the middle of her back. She lifted her arms and tried to flex them, then chuckled at the lack of muscle. Strength was something that Nyxie would have to work on.

Her clothes needed to come off before she could get in. A Svefran lady is usually quite comfortable with nudity; but Nyxie had always refused to go skinny dipping. Thus, she chose to keep on whatever would cover any indecency, and stripped off the rest---she tried not to care about the stolen glances from Kenashern who were still on the beach. She tried to forget about the scars on her body, from her mischief in Alvadas. Left in only her skivvies, Nyxie took a deep breath, and then dove into the sea.

She swam away from the shore while trying to focus her energy on finding her one true friend. Sensing his presence about a mile away, she swam faster. The chimes flew by as she relished the refreshing and fluid feeling of being underwater. It wasn't long before she reached the familiar school of sharks. She held her breath and swam deeper, her eyes searching for an odd, blunt nose. Nyxie was starting to get worried before something pushed her from behind. She lost the air in her lungs as she laughed, knowing he found her, and swam up above the water.

“Kai~! How've you been this week?” The bull shark followed, continuing to bump into her from all sides. “Aw, missed me? Yea, I know you did---I missed ya too, bud,” she giggled as Kai swam in circles around her. “Boy, you’re excited. Wanna go for a swim? Alright, let's ride~"

Nyxie and Kai spent the next couple bells swimming together; she kept an eye on the sky as Syna started to sink into the sea. Kai knew what time it was. She grabbed onto his fin and he swam them towards their usual spot. Nyxie gave him a quick peck before stepping out of the water and onto the deck. The summer heat enveloped her, drying her off pretty quickly, while she walked towards a dark-skinned man casting a net into the water.

“Ahoy, Markus! Ey, good to see yer handsome face after a week o' no fun,” she slapped a hand on the old man’s shoulder. “Have you been workin' out, mate? You look good!"

Markus smiled. He knew her too well to fall for her antics. “Luv, it dun matter how much ya try to butter me up. You still have t’pay me to use ma stuff."

She laughed, and then gave Markus a friendly punch in the arm. “Haha, c'mon, Markus, I've been comin' to learn from yer talents for weeks now. We're friends, aren't we? How bout we jus fish for fun? No lessons, just you n' me."

He shook his head and sighed."Nyx, sorry luv, me work ain't finished yet. Stroll by t'morrow, n' we'll see, hm?” He opened the door to the shack and pulled out a few things, being careful with his rentals. “Take this, n' this right here, n' go spend sum time with the fishies on yer own today. They'll be bitin' pretty soon---shoo, shoo!"

Markus waved goodbye as Nyxie took the rod & supplies and walked away from the bait shack, heading towards the general fishing area. It was getting dark, and there weren't too many Kenashern around for competition; the perfect time to reel in some catfish.

...Something seemed to be different about tonight. Nyxie's evening of lazy leisure was about to change...

Postby Thia Konrath on March 7th, 2014, 12:04 am

Image Lorenzo Konrath cannot stand his daughter's coming and going, her misbehaving and revealing outfits. He hated it and Thia knew he did too. But, it all led up to the unexpected. A higher rank in the society and much love for the Konraths. Which is why kept his distance and stayed quiet.

Besides, there's been a lot of re-arranging. Thia had heard many rumors of the men she is supposedly to marry. More then a few rumors buzzed around. She's soon to be the third wife of one of the Paille men!, that was one rumor, another was that she would marry one of Mica's siblings.

The Radacke family had given her shivers the first time she associate with them. A lot of people compared them to the Konraths, both having great fighting abilities and what not. But Thia felt her family were a lot more organized and a lot better then the Radacke. Both Dynasty families depend on each other for companionship, alliance and other things. The marriage between Thia and a Radacke member would definitely create an even stronger alliance but she just can't.

Thia tried to leave all that behind her this very night. She was not the only one who could throw a great party. The freeborns could throw massive ones on a tight budget. Cheap ale, voluntary musicians and a few sloppy finger foods. If you'd ask Thia, it all sounds great. She got dress just before dawn. A lovely yellow blouse and tight leather pants with her boots. To fit in more she even put her hair in a sloppy bun.

When she first arrived on the beach, she was greeted."Thia!" A few people sung. She waved a bit before grabbing an ale and talking amongst the people around her.

They were simple conversations, unlike the ones she would have with the dynasty members. Talk of exquisite living and how dull their lives are, never worked for her. Being around the freeborns was pretty exciting as they talked about their adventures and heartfelt moment in life. The adrenalin rush they would get from sparring with a Myrian or wrestling a dhani.

There was always a crazy story. Stories a lot better then what she could tell. No one wants to hear a story of how a spoiled brat grew up.

After a couple belles, Thia took off. A cold drink in one hand while the other held her boots. She wanted to get a feel of the sand underneath her webbed feet. She began taking a stroll down the beach, getting farther away from the loud and over the top party. She began lingering farther away.

Long after, she stumbled upon someone. Far off in the distance, and Thia could only make out the person's figure."Hey!" She called out.

The witch had been watching dolphins for days now. A pod tended to play in the river near where her shop was in the early hours of dawn and dusk. She found them fascinating with their sleek bodies and their etched on smiles. And the noises they made were astonishing. But it wasn't until Haeli found a young one washed up on the beach dead that she realized what they looked like as a whole. This one had shark bites in it, most of its belly gone, but was otherwise intact. Haeli knew it was shark killed due to the broken off teeth she found in the wound.

The young witch dragged the corpse up the beach with some considerable effort. She realized immediately these creatures weren't fish but were more like the wolves and coyotes that were found around the swamp. She could tell from observing them and also from looking at their morphology. They ran in packs... no swam in pods... someone had corrected her, one of the svefra, about that when she'd mentioned seeing the dolphins in their packs when she was making a sale in her shop. He'd had a tattoo of one and Haeli had inquired as to what it was. "Dolphin" the man had answered, and when she questioned him further, he'd told her more about them.

They were marine animals that lived at sea and in some rivers... but mainly kept themselves along the coastlines. They swam in groups, most likely family, and sometimes became pets for the svefra. He'd said he'd seen them grey, white, and even pinkish in color.. though this one was a sickly grey probably having been dead a while.

So the morpher studied the dolphin, running her hands over its dead form, learning it, studying its mouth and teeth, and even its sockets with its long gone eyes. Its skin was rubbery and when she cut down into it there was a layer of fat that seemed to insulate the animal. It's flippers were modified hands, its fingers raying out forming the thick insulated substance that kept it warm - Haeli assumed - in the chilly waters. The tail was a lot like the sea lion or seal... lets shortened to almost nothing and toes splayed out as well. Its teeth were conical, not cusped like her own. Yet it hand a tongue and internal organs much like humans. Haeli took bells studying it, trying to learn its anatomy and what the creature really looked and felt like.

And when she'd spent the afternoon doing that, she let the corpse on fire, wanting it not to feed other predators but to turn to smoke and ash and course across the beach as free in death as it was in life. The pile of driftwood around it had taken time to gather, but it was time that gave her the courage to try the form. Haeli wanted to join the frolicking pod and see if they would accept her. She needed some friends. The loneliness of her isolation was growing harder and harder to endure, especially in the city where friends were hard to come by because the people seemed so strange.

So when she waded out into the water and called forth her magic, the djed in her sang to her blood and her limbs caught fire. Bone and muscle rearranged itself, her form thickening, shortening, and her body altering. It was a painful transformation, but not wholly unexpected. She lay in the shallows, afraid if she'd waded into deeper water she'd drown while she was transforming. Hair vanished, and grey slick skin appeared. She felt her legs shorten, her fingers lengthen and all the while she molded her form using the model she had studied to get the dolphin just right.

And when she was ready and done, the pain having withdrawn, she moved her body kicking with her legs and using her now modified arms to balance and shot out through the water in a swift almost breathless motion. She could see perfectly under the water, and holding her breath now was altogether too easy. She was streamlined and glided through the water with ease, turning south and swimming out of the mouth of the river where Fire Isle was and down further towards glass beach. It took her a few minutes to understand how to maneuver, but propelling herself was easy enough. She had to come up for breath, but that too was not hard. She learned fast to exhale hard just before she broke the surface to clear the blow hole of water so she could breath deeply before she dove.

And underneath the water was a whole different world. Used to the murky river waters as a gator, Haeli had never seen clear ocean and salt reefs. She was mesmerized, exploring in dives and breaking the surface to breath, playing and enjoying herself as she hadn't in a long long time. For her the afternoon whirled away in play, loosing herself to her day off and her newly discovered form.

It was when the water grew shallower and filled with a hundred shards of glass the waves worked back and forth through the sand that Haeli noticed two women on the beach. There seemed to be a party higher up, one that Haeli hadn't known about nor been invited too. The dolphin bobbed in the water, its head outstretched watching the beach goers. She had no idea what humans did at a party or why some would choose to leave it. But she was curious enough to want to know and so she watched as the afternoon moved onward promising a typical spring evening. One woman fished, casting out her rod as if seeking some of the deep beasts that moved from salt to fresh water with little to no effort. Haeli ducked beneath the water again, feeling curious as to what the shiny thing was the woman tossed out on the rod.

She swam closer to it, nosed at it, causing the line and tackle to tug a bit in Nyxie's hand. Suddenly the whole thing moved with a jerk and Haeli found the big hook sinking deeply into her snout, painfully, causing her to instinctively roll which tangled her up hopelessly in the fishing line.

Haeli squeed in distress, trying to fight to the surface to get a breath. She managed it, but just barely before the line wrapped around her caused her to sink even deeper and be yanked a bit towards shore.

Nyxie stood by the coast, concentrating on tying the twisted horsehair line to the open eye of the iron hook. She’d gotten used to the frustration of the simple step, but having to the cast the flimsy thing would be much harder. Waves crashed onto the shore, white foam washing over her bare feet. Throwing the line out into the water would take a couple tries, but it’d be worth it in the end. She’d be bettering herself, becoming someone with more to offer to the world… Well, the Draer girl doubted she’d be able to sell her skill in surf fishing more than she could sell her skill in cast net fishing. Using a line and a hook was just far less productive if you wanted to catch a large quantity. But at least she’d know how to feed herself if she was ever stuck on the shore of some faraway city.

The thought of being stranded somewhere all alone brought a crooked smile to her otherwise pallid face. She took the thought and let it fly through the air, attached to the hook that sank below the surface of the sea beyond the breaking waves. It was the first successful cast after five tries; but it wasn’t going to be bitten and she knew it. That was just how her luck worked. So there she stood, awaiting the chimes she knew she had to wait before pulling it back in.

“Hey!”

Nyxie shivered in shock, the voice was incredibly unexpected. She’d never had anyone approach her in all the times that she’d practiced here. The Svefra took a moment to scrutinize the woman that walked towards her. It wasn’t hard to tell that she was either highborn or freeborn, based off the clothes and the general cleanliness. Nyx switched the wooden rod to her left and held out her right, offering a handshake,

“Hey, I’m Nyxie. Nyxie Nadira Draer,” she smiled at the woman before eyeing the drink in her hand. “Something I can do for ya, luv? Or are you just out here enjoying yourself tonight?” The stranger didn’t look like someone who’d cause her any trouble, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted any company. Of course, that didn’t mean Nyx wouldn’t be polite.

In the middle of what seemed to be a friendly conversation, Nyxie’s rod started to jerk in her hands. Eyebrows knitted in confusion, not believing that she’d managed to catch something so early,

“Oh shyke, this one’s big,” she yelped, both hands gripping the wooden rod that pulled against the force that started to drag her towards the ocean. She planted her heels firmly into the sand, using every bit of energy to walk backwards as she yanked the line further towards the shore. With one final heave she lurched back, collapsing on the beach in heavy breaths, then scrambling back up on her feet to run towards her catch.

It was impossible. There was no way this creature would come anywhere near here. They were too smart for this.

Nyxie stood above the wounded dolphin with utter perplexity written all over her face. She crouched down to a squat, laying a hand next to the hook that sunk into its snout. The poor thing was still alive and breathing as the tides washed over it. She knew she needed to get the hook out quickly, and release it back into the sea before it was too late.

The line was snarled around dolphin’s body, so Nyxie went ahead and gently disentangled it before making a small loop out of the line. She passed it over the eye of the hook and then brought the loop to the top of the hook’s bend. Being careful to push firmly down on the eye so that it touches the skin, she pulled up and away, with a sudden, strong yank on the line.

The hook came out the way it went in.

“There, that’s better. Let’s get you back into ocean~”
