[Docks] His maiden voyage(TRAINING)

Fall 2nd 510 AV
ImageThe docks bustled with activity. The famed piers stretching out onto the bay, with hundreds of vessels surrounding them, with the larger brigantines to the infamous galleons hoarding the majority of the plank space. The massive vessels stood as a testament to Zeltivan ingenuity and craftsmanship. Nowhere else in all of Mizahar could boast such a powerful collection of ships. Yet, for all their glory, and clamor, it was the smaller boats that seemed to be garnering the most attention. Today the fishing fleets had made quite the catch. With fall coming just starting into fruition, it could be guessed that the massive schools of fish where starting to chase the currents just south of the Matthew's Bay, in an attempt to start an easy journey south. Where the fish went, the boats followed, and as this afternoon being evidence, the schools where quite plentiful.

Yet, afar from the crowds of returning sailors and greedy merchants, a figure sat propped against a wooden crate, with net sprawled underneath. Apparently the net had looked comfortable the night before, as the bottle and red eyes sang testament to this young man's prior inebriation. The half-closed eyelids fought to stay up while the figure stared with a slack-jawed stupor out onto the docks.

Kal didn't know how he got here. He didn't know why he had an empty bottle in his hand, or most importantly, why his head hurt. In a sudden flurry of motion, he frantically waved his arms, grasping the corner of the crate, and heaved himself up. It was with a heavy breath that he surveyed several smirking sailors walking by. With a great effort, he took a slow step towards the nearest building. A shaky hand tried to clear the path in front of him, but only served to annoy a passing merchant. One look, and she simply turned her head in disgust, walking off in the direction of one of the Galleons. Kal paused to clutch at his stomach, and wipe the sweat from his brow, as he did so, it occured to him, that he must look like a ghost. His tattered cotton shirt, with torn green britches marked him as a university student. Kal certainly looked the part, with a handsome face, and well groomed hair. Yet, it also looked like he'd spent the night before under a ships rudder. Kal couldn't remember what had happened, but he could feel enough to make a good guess. Hobbling forward, he managed to push through the taverns door before pausing to take in the crowd.

The small bar was completely overcrowded, with sailors of all kinds packing into every inch and cranny of the wooden space. If you could set a mug down, a sailor had claimed it. The tables offered even less, with every single one being crowded with rowdy men shouting for waitresses. Rubbing at his temple, Kal turned to leave. As he did so, he bumped into someone. Kal blinked, looking the larger man over. He was balding, and carried a deep scar over the right eye. His other eye was blackened, and judging by the look on his face, he might have an idea of who. Kal gave a half-heartened grin. "Ah.. eh... have we met?" The man responded with a smirk and a large fist into Kal's abdomen.

Kal had just managed to recapture his lost breath when heavy hands grasped his shirt neck, and practically threw the young man out the door. A laughter was heard as he went sprawling back onto the walkway behind the docks. Coughing, and clutching his stomach, Kal managed to rise to his feet, and hobbled over to a nearby rain barrel. Not bothering to study the contents, Kal simply dropped his head in, letting the water wash over his face and hair.

It was a few moments longer before he was on the move again. It was supposed to be a brand new day, and the start of a new life. A chance to wash away the grime of his sins, and the convoluted dreams his mother had bestowed upon him. A chance to get away from his step-father and the shipwright classes he had failed. A new life. Which had been the primary reason for his celebration the night before.

Might have overdone it.

Walking with a rather unsteady gait, the man made his way over to the guild office. It was a rather crowded place, and in Kal's recovering state, he simply walked through the door, ignoring any sense of scenery the most important building in Zeltiva bestowed upon the docks. The Sailors Guild dealt with all things nautical in Zeltiva, and as well as registering the ships and crews, hired additional crews for wanting captains. Unfortunately, today the hiring line was far, far longer then the open ship positions. With a heavy heart, the young man took a seat on a bench, and waited.
