Bitt, The Squire of Syliras

Appearance
Bitt stands well above average height. His skin has a smooth complexion and is lightly tanned. His hair is dark-brown and hangs in a tangled mess, reaching just below his shoulders. Bitt got a haircut, albeit a bad one, during his first season with the Syliran Knights. His hair is short and untidy.

Bitt has a large head with strong lines. His cheekbones are high but his brow is low and slightly protruding resulting in a perpetually angry looking expression. His eyes are a bright green, like his mother's were. His nose is marginally hooked with a wide bridge. As a child, he slipped on the wet decking of a ship and broke it. It did not heal properly and is slightly crooked to his left. His lips are relatively stock-standard, but his smile boasts a small overbite. His ears are relatively small compared to his head but are hidden beneath his hair for the most part. He has a small mole on his neck and a narrow scar on his forehead; the latter arising from yet another childhood act of folly.

Spending the majority of one's childhood working on board a ship is a great way to nurture the development of healthy muscles and Bitt is no exception. Climbing sail-rigging, hauling cargo and rowing when necessary gave Bitt thick arms for one his age. Though that is not to say his core and legs are lacking, he is a fit young lad; it is just that a life at sea is a life for strong arms. His body is littered with the odd scar here and there from the occasional work-related accident. His hands are tough and calloused.

Is Bitt handsome? Maybe not necessarily by traditional standards. He is by no means ugly though, and has the sort of rugged appearance that some people probably like.

Character Concept
Bitt is jovial by nature and tries to look at the positive side of all things. He is a hard worker who believes that if he is going to do something that it should be done correctly. He has a sharp tongue and is not above the occasional witty remark. This treatment is usually reserved only for his comrades however and he expects to be equally joked with in return. Speaking of jokes, Bitt loves them! In particular he has a passion for puns that likely stemmed from the ease of which his name can be used for such a purpose. Bitt believes a strong, hearty laugh is one of the finest pleasures in the world.

That is not to say that good food is not also amazing. Bitt loves to eat; fish, steak, apples, rice, everything, it's all fantastic! Unfortunately, Bitt is a terrible cook. The quickest way to Bitt's heart is through his stomach. If you can cook, you are incredible in the eyes of Bitt. On a similar note, wasting food is a good way to earn a particularly scary glare from Bitt. He loves music; especially if it can be danced to. Bitt is light on his feet so despite a lack of method or reason to his dancing he doesn't make a complete fool of himself. Unfortunately the lad cannot hold a tune nor play an instrument, so it is a trait he admires in other people.

Bitt likes the sea and loves the sea air. The caress of a cool, sea breeze is one of the best feelings in the world. While some people may have an aversion to heights, Bitt has no such problem. The higher he goes, the nicer the air is. While it is not even remotely close to claustrophobia, Bitt does not like being indoors. Again, he has no real aversion to it in and of itself; it is just that he prefers being outside so much more. He could sit for hours on a riverbank and just enjoy the atmosphere.

Bitt has zero sense of direction. He struggles to find his way anywhere without being guided or given step-by-step instructions. A map is also a considerable help. Bitt is not blind to this fact and accepts it as one of his shortcomings. He is never afraid to ask for help in this regard.

Bitt's moral system is straight forward. If doing something makes him feel good inside then it was a good thing. If doing something makes him feel bad inside it is a bad thing. If he has to choose between two impossible choices he would chose the one that would make it easier for him to sleep at night. Bitt tries his best to do the right thing when he can.


 
Character History
Pre-Creation

Tragedy struck the day Bitt was born. Bitt's mother was named Melody. This is practically all Bitt knows about his mother as his father never spoke of her. She died giving birth to Bitt. His father worked as a sailor and would travel on long voyages aboard trade craft in the Suvan Sea. Working in the pirate infested waters was dangerous work, but it was work all the same. His name was Lucian, or Lu for short. Unfortunately, without Bitt's mother around, his father had to take a sabbatical from his sea-faring to care for the infant that was Bitt. It was not an easy time for the broken family. His father had a very specific skill set and the manual labour jobs available to him in Syliras weren't the best paying when one considered how much time he needed to be with his son. Often times Lu went hungry but he made sure his son never did. He regretfully sold most of his deceased wife's possessions save for the locket he wore around his neck. He would never sell that. When Bitt had seen his fifth Winter Lu decided it was time to head back out to sea... and he would take Bitt with him.

Thus Bitt's childhood truly began as he lived and helped his father work aboard various trading vessels in the Suvan Sea. The other sailors and deckhands taught the young Bitt many things about life on a ship. He would tie knots and climb the rigging, he would move cargo and swab the decks. These were hard working men of the sea. They would speak of of life. Of love. Of the simple pleasure one could feel for doing a job well done. By night they would sing sailors songs and laugh of times long lost. The life was hard and occasionally lonely but they always made the best of it. When he grew a bit older a few even taught him the basics of their own special breed of unarmed combat. He also slowly built up a vocabulary of the creative curses often used by the angry seamen. Bitt learnt a lot on the sea.

Occasionally people would pay a ship's captain for passage across the Suvan Sea if their destination matched that of the ship. In the Winter of 513 AV one such individual happened to be on the same ship Bitt was on. The ship has headed for Syliras and the passenger was a Syliran Knight. He wore a large, hooded cloak to block out the cold but Bitt would catch the occasional glint of metal beneath it. The man had a short beard and his hair possessed the speckled 'salt and pepper' colouring of the middle-aged. He did not like to speak to the crew and kept to his cabin for the most part. Still, once his presence was made known the crew began to chatter. Bitt had heard of the knights before in passing, but as the sailors and deckhands spoke over the next several days he learnt more than he had in the previous 15 years of his life. A lot of it had come from his father who he asked about the subject. Being a native of Sylira himself, Lucian was able to separate the known truth from the speculation for Bitt.

Along with the knight passenger six new crew members were picked up in the ship's last port. Weed had recently turned fifteen and was going to be expected to do more than just 'help out' on the next voyage and properly work for his meals. It was an exciting time for Bitt. For him and the newcomers, it was a time to properly prove themselves to the crew. The ship was two weeks away from Syliras when the newcomers struck. It was not raining that Winter night, instead the ship was sailing through a thick blanket of fog. All six of the new comers were on deck along with six others. With their vision obscured and their spirits drained they did not even realise when their throats had been slit from behind. That is except of course for Bitt's father. Some primal sixth sense caused Lucian to react at the last second and the cut to his neck was messy. It was his cry that woke the other crew members. It was his cry that woke Bitt.

Bitt and the crew rushed to the deck. No one ever slept deeply on board a ship so their response was rapid. Chaos ensued when blades began to leap out of the fog, leaving muffled groans and bloodied crew members in their wake. The sound of a sharp crack interrupted the slaughter and brought an eerie stillness to the ship. Bitt clutched the shallow wound in his arm as, impossibly, the fog on the deck began to clear, being kept at bay at the edge of the ship's railing. At the centre of the phenomenon stood the knight, his hood down and a furious expression on his face. In one hand was the large quarterstaff which he had snapped against the deck to make the earlier noise. Wisps of eerie blue gas began to leak from his body and slither like serpents through the air. Magic! Everyone, even the traitorous six, stood solid; engulfed by fear. In moments the wisps had collared each of the six. It was then that their desire to live overcome their terror and they began to approach the knight.

In an instant the knight rose and once again snapped his staff on the planks of the deck. Crack! The results were instantaneous. The six murderous crew members began to clutch at their necks, dropping their swords in a panic. Tears streamed down their faces which turned from red, to blue, to black. They began to spasm on the floor and one by one their movement ceased and their lives ended. The knight exhaled and the fog once again swept over the ship.

The rest of the trip passed without incident. The six were pirates who would have taken control of the ship and stolen its cargo had it not been for the knight... the mage. After he had taken care of the pirates he returned to his cabin and the crew had been too scared to speak with him. Several crew members died in the attempted act of piracy. Lucian, Bitt's father, was among them. The wound to his neck was deep and he was dead before anyone had even made it onto the deck. Just like that Bitt had lost his father, the only parent he had left. I will not lie and say Bitt took the event in his stride. Bitt cried himself to sleep that night, and many nights afterwards. His inheiritance was his father's locket. A locket Lucian had received from Bitt's mother Melody.

It was during the weeks that followed that Bitt felt mad at himself. He was unable to protect his father. The small wound to his arm was healing well but even so; when he went to the deck he unable to do anything useful. He was just standing there waiting to die. Not the knight though; his mere presence caused the pirates to freeze up. The knight could use magic and was probably a talented fighter as well. While the knight was not fast enough to protect Bitt's father, he did protect Bitt.

When the ship sailed into the port of Syliras a gentle rain was pouring. It was almost Spring. The knight immediately left upon their arrival and headed into the city. Bitt helped with the unloading of the cargo and various other jobs. There was more work because of the reduced number of sailors. When the job was finished Bitt gathered his belongings and said his farewells. He would not be staying with the ship. With a hardened resolve and a singular purpose Bitt entered the city of Syliras. He would become stronger. He would be a protector. He would become a knight!

Worshipped Deities

Yahal: Bitt considers Yahal to be a protector; a God who will always offer his help, so long as you believe he'll help you. Bitt approves of Yahal because, to him at least, the God of Faith and Purity seems much less discriminatory than the alternatives.

Sylir: Bitt knows Sylir is the patron god of The Syliran Knights, and respects him for it. He will undoubtedly learn more about just how important the God of Peace and Civilisation is to the order when he grows older, but for now his understanding barely touches the borders.

Tyveth: Bitt's interpretation of Tyveth's values is to "be the best you can be". Bitt struggles to improve himself every day, so he feels like he can sympathise with the importance of such values.

Known Deities

Eyeris: Bitt was not very impressed when he learnt about the values of the Goddess of Knowledge and Wisdom. As far as he's concerned, a person doesn't have to be smart in order to be a good person, or to be acknowledged. He recognises her importance, but his worship doesn't extend far beyond that.

Rak'keli: Bitt was healed by one of Rak'keli's healers, at which time he learnt about the goddess. Bitt was amazed by the power her servants wielded; he highly respects both the goddess and her followers, and holds them both in very high regard.

Father's Golden Locket: This is Bitt's memento of his parents. The locket is well made and was a gift from Bitt's mother to his father when they were newly-weds. The exterior is inscribed with a series of branch-like engravings that form intricate patterns. Inside the locket the word 'Forever' is simply etched. It is Bitt's most valued possession and he wears it constantly around his neck on a golden chain.

Additional Info: Crowe is a grizzled Knight-Mage who, despite being respected by his superiors in the order, never opted to advance his ranking. He prefers the relatively simpler existence of a low-ranking knight. Crowe takes his magical advancement very seriously in that he is far more cautious than most when it comes to using his magical abilities. When he was a squire Crow's patron succumbed to overgiving and died as a result; Crowe saw the whole thing.

People say the event is responsible for his current attitude and they are right. Curiously, despite this Crowe is always willing to accept an aspiring Knight-Mage as his squire. He believes that the education of magic should be a strict process. His program revolves around building strong mental character before the subject of Djed is even mentioned. It his his desire to help as many aspiring squires as he can; preparing them to use magic sparingly and safely. Naturally, to the energetic youths assigned to him that dream of flinging fireballs after their first lesson, Crowe is a rude awakening.

Relationship With Bitt: Crowe is Bitt's patron within the ranks of the Syliran Knights. Bitt holds Crowe in high regard and respects the old knight's teachings. Crowe approves of Bitt's gusto and willingness to follow instructions.

Relationship With Bitt: Altos and Bitt share a dorm; they are both squires with The Syliran Knights. Their similar situations, that is, their harsh training schedules give them common ground in the shared experiences. Because of this, Bitt considers Altos his first friend within the order.

Relationship With Bitt: Nivel is a pycon and squire of Sera Grey, one of Crowe's old squires. The two patrons organised a spar between the two in which Bitt embarassed himself somewhat. He has nothing against the small pycon, but finds her somewhat odd; though this could likely be attributed to their limited contact.

Relationship With Bitt: Sandy is an old mare owned by the Windmount Stables. When Bitt wishes to practice his riding, he is allowed to borrow her. She is well trained and gentle, so is great for squires wishing to learn how to ride. Bitt likes Sandy, and is prone to having conversation with the horse, even though she doesn't talk back. He tries his best to hide this though, realising that it is a weird quirk.
