Character Concept
Personality: Winona is a curious soul. When she was younger, she'd always get into everything, good or bad. Winona is equally stubborn. When the other Chaktawe children would practice and train their athletic prowess, Winona would rather draw. Unless they were running. Winona loved to run. She'd run on the flattest turf, or even the most complex. She would run to the ends of the earth if she could. She likes to feel free, stress free. She'd explore far from the tribe's camp to find a secluded place just for herself. That's why her family called her the Deaf Spirit. She was always meant to be free.

Winona thought so. How could anyone be born into a tribe and magically be exactly what the tribe was popularly known for? Bound to the Kalanue and their clever, hardworking ways. She was destined to be vigorous and brawny, but what if her passion was art? While her sibling counterparts and peers were training or traveling to capture goats, Winona would not be there. Instead, one would have to search high and low to find her. She'd usually hide away to either play and draw in the sand or, if she was lucky, weave little baskets out of straw for the family. Occasionally, she would be nagged and have to exercise to be able to match her peer's strength. But she didn't have to be forced to run. She would run anywhere! Her parents worked desperately hard to keep her working to be of any use for her tribe. She had already disappointed them once by being born deaf and not being able to carry down the tales of her ancestors. Winona was the odd one out and didn't have many friends but everyone knew her. The children would act strange around her, unsure of how to react to her disability. Instead of making fun or interacting at all, they ignored her unless she directly tried to speak to them. Winona didn't mind since she liked being alone. She only really spoke to her family. Although deaf, she was taught to speak but her voice is often garbled and foreign sounding. She didn't like to speak much either. Reading lips was hard anyway so when frustrated, she'd turn her head away from whoever was speaking to her to let them know that she didn't want to talk to them anymore. Winona's way of "hearing" was by the little freckles on her fingers. She could feel the presence of another, even if she couldn't hear them they could never surprise her.
Learning was difficult to come by when trying to teach stubborn Winona. One would actually have to grab her face to force her to read their lips. Teaching her to speak almost took five to six years! Since they had no written language, anything they couldn't explain to her was drawn on paper. It was the most effective but loose way of teaching her since sometimes the drawing wouldn't make sense from time to time. However, drawings were the only way to keep her attention from wandering. There were no hard feelings though, her family and tribe still loved her. She was a new, wondrous gift that taught them how to handle future children like Winona.
When it was time for Winona to be on her "searching," her family mourned for her and even some of the tribe members. Would a deaf child last long in the desert by itself? They were about to find out. But instead of returning, Winona disappeared. Currently, her tribe believes she had died out in the desert. However, Winona is truly alive and well with her very own "spirit guardian," Lorettana the Ethaefal.
