Rinti Gardens Beloved and integral to survival in the frosty north Avanthal tundra Animals perish everyday. These dedicated service animals from horses to childrens mice, are buried in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. Behind the Frostfawn stables this cemetery sprawls out over a large area. With no sense of order there are clumps of graves and patches of clear spaces as many owners choose to bury their pets near each other. The paths around the graveyard are narrow and ponderous, leading to dead ends against the rock wall that surrounds the area. The wall meanders around, forming no particular shape. The wall keeps predators or loose pets from digging up new graves. The many paths are cleared by Frostfawn children as part of their chores. The tombs are cared for by the owners of the pet and carved through private deals with various carvers. Thus, tombs with owners that have passed away or with limited funds often fall into disrepair. The cemetery is ill-kept and ill-planned but allows for the seclusion of packs of pets from each other and requires no groundskeeper. Pine trees grow along the rock walls cutting off the wind and protecting the area. Weeping willows grow randomly amongst the tomb stones cared for by only by volunteers as this is the only location with enough moisture and soil warmth to grow the more typically southern trees. The water that runs underneath the graveyard is the water that runs the hot springs allowing the willows to grow in the warmed wet soil. In the center of the cemetery is a small pool, kept just warm enough to only allow a thin film of ice to ever develop on its surface by the underground waterways. The names of pets are carved on single stones for those families too poor to afford cemetery space and dropped into the bottom of the pool to join the tower of small stones in commemoration of a life. The first dog buried on the property, it is not one of the frequent breeds present in Avanthal. Beautifully etched no one knows who or how it was carved by. The stories surrounding the dog are numerous but by far the most famous is the story of the Squid. When Avanthal was first being built, on the edge of the ocean, it interrupted many creatures typical breeding and swimming routes. Also disturbed was the home of giant squid who attacked Avanthals port in its fury. Picking up a child and throwing him into the freezing and watery depths his dog leapt into the ocean to drag the boy ashore. Dead on impact the boy was buried in the cemetery. The dog never left the grave, food and water had to be brought to him. Eventually, the dog perished on the grave several years later. Many argued it wasn't right that a dog be buried with a human, while others argued it was only fair. Instead, a cemetery was created in his honour and the dog was buried beneath the largest and heaviest stone available to keep his ghost from wandering to join the childs grave in death.
