The Void, a destructive force seemingly without equal even when compared to Reimancy and one that Annalisa Marin spent painstaking effort attempting to master. The tall dark haired woman was dressed in her ragged clothing today, almost looking rather like how a slave might with her tattered shirt, pants and feet bare. Her long dark hair was pulled into a high ponytail, bangs framing her rather plain face nicely. All in all she was the person most in Sahova might not spare a second glance as they passed them in the corridors. The glinting silver ring wrapped around her right ring finger told a different story, its sigil that of a burning scroll with rubies glinting along the edges. As poor as she appeared to be, Wizard Annalisa Marin was more powerful than a number of Sahovan Masters and likely a few realized this.

Currently the sorceress stood in the middle of a nice open space in the Common Labs, a few chairs arrayed here and there and several work stations pushed off to the side. The four chairs before her each possessed a different item upon them, the left most one possessed a few ruined documents, the center left one possessed a quill, the center right possessed a gear, and the right most one possessed a knife planted in the wood of the seat. The tall woman had set it all up in this way in order to attempt to further test the capabilities of stronger attractive and repulsive forces when using smaller portals.

Anna paced around the chairs, her eyes taking in as many details as possible regarding the items and how difficult they could very well be for. Her steps were slow, ponderous in their motions as she walked in a heel to toe fashion so common among her kind. The fingers of her left hand drummed at her chin as her grey eyes flicked over each item in their turn, gauging the difficulties she might face with each one in attempting to use Voiding to Pull them into the Void. There was a reason she had selected each item after all.

The parchments were simple things, her eyes noting ink splotches that stained them from some clumsy hand spilling ink upon them. It had long since dried but the stains remained and rendered it useless for actual writing, but useful for her purposes. The quill was a simple black feathered thing, slightly bent and the nib worn and ill kept up. The gear she had taken from the workshops, a heavier piece of metal that would not exactly be easy to lift using pull. Finally there was the knife, dulled and slightly rusted that had been lying on a workstation as perhaps a tool in Summoning or carving.

All four were set upon the chairs, each relatively neat in placement or as neat as the sorceress could place them at the very least. The chairs themselves she had placed to grant the items platforms, so she would not need to aim at the floor with her Pull and there would be less chance of it affecting her. Voiding was as dangerous to the caster as the target if used incorrectly, self-Voiding was a rather humiliating demise for any wizard.

The tall dark haired woman held out her right hand finally as she came to a halt in front of the chair that held the parchment, eyes focusing upon a singular point in the air before her. She focused upon the wellspring of her Djed, that tapestry of her being that defined who she was and gathered it up. As she did the tall woman began speaking in the Ancient Tongue, incantations dripping from her lips. Some wizards might have scoffed at them but they were useful for channeling focus upon one’s magic, personal magic in any event.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

The young sorceress willed the energy to gather outwards in the spot she was focusing upon, willing the Djed to empty out all matter within the space. At first nothing happened, but that was expected as Voiding took much time and concentration to get results. Within ten ticks however a rush of energy flow from her and an ink black pin prick of darkness formed in the spot, a bridge between This Side and The Other Side. This initial spark brought a slight grin to Anna’s lips, which vanished as her face became a mask of purest concentration.

Now that she had sparked it into existence the sorceress stabilized the Portal by feeding it a steady stream of her Djed, establishing a connection to it. From here she slowly would increase the influx of her Djed going into the Portal itself, willing it to increase in size. Slowly the inky black vortex expanded, growing and growing to the direction of her will and through the strength of her connection. The borders of the Portal were purple, the light seeming to shift and bend around it as the bridge to The Other Side swallowed it up.

It felt glorious to control, a thrill shooting through her entire body as the Portal expanded to the size of a fist and then to the size of her open hand. The larger it grew, the more Djed was needed to maintain it at a stable amount however it was still very much manageable even as it reached the size of her head. Once it reached this size Anna stopped increasing the influx, focusing instead upon just keeping it stable and steady.

Portals to the Void were possessed of a couple of key factors in deciding how much Djed they would take to keep open, the size of the Portal and whether it possessed Push or Pull. Anna intended to keep the Portal smaller to maximize the effectiveness of her Pull upon the Portal; it would hopefully translate into taking less Djed to maintain. The sorceress wanted to keep her control as high as possible over attractive and repulsive forces, that was the point of this experiment after all.

As she stabilized the Portal Anna opted to add an experimental Pull to the Portal, a slight omni directional thing. The influx of Djed increased upon the Portal itself, increasing the strain upon Anna herself and enforcing a change upon the shifting black Vortex. The Pull tugged at her hand and her sleeves, her hair even moving towards the Portal ever so. It was relatively weak, but the sorceress was just looking to warm up at this point. Likely Omni directional Pull in most situations would result in Self Voiding, not a good thing to invite. After a few more ticks of this Anna cut off the Pull, now ready to focus her full attention upon the experiment.

Darkest Attraction

The first exercise would involve the parchment; Anna expected it to be the easiest to draw into her Portal so there was more than one sheet. Part of the benefit to keeping her Portal smaller was that the field of the Pull would be more focused at the price of limiting what it could actually absorb. At this current size, a human being would likely be able to overwhelm the Portal itself and would likely only be able to absorb smaller creatures or items. Perfect for her purpose but in a combat situation relatively useless in the practical scheme of things.

Anna gritted her teeth, her arm still outstretched and the cold radiating from the Portal itself was a little chilling and uncomfortable but little else. The tall sorceress continued her incantation through her teeth; keeping focus as well as she could though it was a little easier on her considering that this small of a Portal did not trigger her hallucinations. The hallucinations tended to make the act of casting in regards to Voiding far more difficult. Distractions in general were something one wanted to avoid when utilizing most personal magics.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

Carefully Anna increased in flow of her Djed into the inky vortex, tasking it towards enforce a Pull upon the Portal and directing it in the direction of the chair with the parchment upon it. The attractive force added a bit of a strain at first, nothing major but it was certainly there as the increase of Djed flowing from her became noticeable. Anna increased the Pull by fractions at a time, a slow increase in order to gauge exactly where it would need to be for certain things. It was almost scientific in its nature, the gauging of what drew the right reactions and what did not.

The parchment made little reaction at first, however soon enough it did start to shift and rustle like one might expect parchment to do in the wind. The edges of the sheets moved up slightly in the direction of the Portal though they did not move just yet, the Pull not being quite potent enough to force the Parchment upwards. Anna thus increased the force acting down upon it by another faction, more Djed flowing from her and into the Portal itself to fuel the process.

Finally after a bit more force the parchment started to truly lift off of the chair, fluttering upwards towards the Portal itself and with a bit more force it moved faster and more steadily. One by one they flew into the purple bordered vortex, Anna’s breath increasing in tempo as casting euphoria washed over her. The parchment crossed into The Other Side easily and quickly enough and the chair did not even shift the littlest bit. It was rather like if the wind was directing the light sheets into a certain spots, only they simply vanished from this dimension.

Anna felt elation at removing the objects from this dimension, like they had not even existed with no one to know what happened to them. She shook her head as she dispelled the Pull upon the Portal, realizing that it was but another way to try and trip herself up mentally. Fortunately, compared to Reimancy, Voiding was not nearly so taxing in terms of drain upon her Djed. She could afford to maintain her Portals a little longer, especially due to having decided to make her current Portal small enough as it was. The only danger here would likely be in terms of being too zealous with a Pull upon the Portals, though that was also mitigated by Portal size.

Darkest Attraction

The tall woman needed to now move her Portal, so she seized control of the connection they shared between the two of them rather like it was a leash. Using this leash Anna slowly moved her foot to the side and shifted her body with it slowly, moving the Portal slowly near her hand. The vortex moved through the air, light rippling around it as it was absorbed within the Void itself. Moving the Portals was always a slow thing for the sorceress at her limited level of skill. She was comfortable with the art but was by no means an unmatched master of the craft.

Finally she then stood before the next chair, this one possessing a quill upon it and was her next test to the current limits of her abilities in regards to the art of Voiding and her comfort with Pull. Grey eyes fixed upon their target, her face one of the purest concentration as she whispered her incantations under her breath, battling and warring against the urges that roared within her mind. Personal wizards could be rather self-destructive in their own art, destroying their bodies or even their minds. Only the most disciplined or the most strong willed could hope to stand above the rest that practiced their craft, only they were worthy of it.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

Anna pondered over her next target; it was light as well though it had an additional property that would make it rather difficult to deal with all things considered. The nib was made of metal, which would add weight to the overall object and make Pulling it into the Void that much more challenging. It was a good logical step up from mere parchment and would serve as a good end of the scale for lighter items, a bridge between the metal items and the non-metal. Parchment was good and all but a little bit of weight was needed sometimes.

The sorceress increased the influx of Djed given to the Portal, tasking it towards enforcing another Pull upon the construct. The energy flowed from her and into the vortex, sucked from her body hungrily ever more and more like a constant leech upon her vital energy. She increased it until it was roughly at the level it had been previously, noting a result gained almost immediately but it was rather expected at this point. The metal was certainly playing the factor she had suspected, though that just meant that her work was further cut out for her.

The fibers upon the feather shifted and moved at first, increasing the amount had the quill’s feather point upwards at the Portal itself and the metal to drag slowly on the chair. So she increased the Pull further, her jaw clenching and her brows knitting together as she concentrated. The power flowed from her as the laws of reality bent to her whims, the Pull increasing well enough to lift the metal tip from the seat of the chair. The attractive forces tugged the quill upwards, the item whizzing into the darkness of the Void, and again the chair did not shift.

So far the experiments were very much illuminating in terms of force required to Pull specific objects into the Void, they were telling her exactly how much force she could manage and how much it took to pull things into the Void. The tall woman cut off the attractive force one again, her breathing much heavier and her stomach feeling a little more empty. Personal magic was rather draining upon the user after all. She was feeling the drain, but she still had time in this casting session. The sorceress was willing to press on, to learn the limits of this power she claimed to command.

Darkest Attraction

Anna shifted her feet slowly to the side again, her movements a little more delayed than they normally were and her leg trembling just slightly. She seized her connection to the Portal again and moved it along near her hand and over to the next chair, the one with a gear upon it. The dark haired sorceress’ face was twisted in concentration, focusing upon the Portal before her. Anna had control of this whole thing; she was in control of her own magic and would remain in control. She was not some lesser wizard; she was a leading innovator in magical research and development.

The gear was purely metal so this would likely be far more difficult than the parchment, an actual test of what her Pull could do. The gear was small, it could easily fit within the palm of her hands and didn’t weigh much really but it was more the fact it was made entirely of metal that made things more difficult. The sorceress fixed her gaze upon it, she knew this was going to be a bit challenging but with the Portal at this size she could afford to exert herself.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

The sorceress tasked the flow of her Djed, creating an attractive force in the direction of the chair and the gear. The words in Nader-Canoch fell from her lips to assist in her focus, her mind idly pondering whether or not she should get back in to habit of drawing Focus Glyphs on her body. The incantations were useful but when aided by Glyphs perhaps it would be far more potent, the sorceress made a mental note to do this next time. Sahova was dulling some of her habits in some ways, making her more complacent in certain aspects.

The force of the Pull was increased again and again by fractions, moving past the level where she had absorbed the quill. The gear didn’t move or shift but remained where it was despite the Pull upon it, which signaled a further increase to be placed upon the Portal. Anna squeezed the energy out of her, increasing the Pull more and more. The gear started shaking then, quivering the more Pull was placed in its direction. It still was not enough so she kept going, kept pulling upon the item.

The waves of casting euphoria washed over her mind, filling her with urges to increase the Pull to astronomical levels. To make the Portal larger, to consume this entire lab or all of the Citadel with the power and force at her fingertips. She was unto a goddess, able to remove that which displeased here on an idle whim of hers be that an object, person, or even a whole place. Anna felt it all through the exhaustion settling over her body, all of the urges pounding at her mind but still she kept control despite this.

She increased the Pull once again, actually managing to move the gear a bit along the chair with the attractive force upon it. Finally she increased it once again, finally having enough to cause the metal item to shoot off of the chair and into the Portal itself to vanish into eternal nothingness. It was gone from this dimension, now and likely forever in the dimension of blackness and night called the Void. The success sent feelings akin to elation coursing through her, joy even to some degree or another.

The sorceress cut off the Pull once more, this time her exhaustion and strain showing fully and obviously on her body. Sweat had formed beads upon her brow, trickling down her face and her breathing sounded and looked rather like she had been physically exerting herself for a lengthy period of time. Anna herself felt some of that, but its edge was cut off by the euphoria that consumed her at the moment. The fact that this felt so very good was a natural trait of magic, personal magic at least and that was why it was so very dangerous.

Darkest Attraction

Anna’s footsteps were shaky and her legs were trembling to some degree, her outstretched hand feeling a bit numb from the cold radiating from the Portal. Her arm shook slightly as it moved the Portal along with it, a sign of the amount of stress placed upon her by this whole thing. Her heart pounded in her chest and in her skull, the rapid thumping of the organ as it pumped blood through her entire body filling her thoughts. She was nearing the limits no doubt about it, but she knew that she could still manage this affair. She still had control.

Djed poured out from her in a constant stream into the head sized Portal to the Void, which hungrily drank of Annalisa Marin happily. Void Portals required constant maintenance, it was rather like attraction during Reimancy though the two disciplines only overlapped there really. Anna gave of herself to keep the small Portal open, knowing that this last item would be a rather difficult test of that there was no doubt in her mind. The others had been basic; this one would be a little more challenging. Even now incantations fell from her mouth, sharp syllables escaping with each breath taken by her.

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

“Sutla Gug. Gug Sutla.”

Upon this chair a rusty knife had been embedded in the seat, placed there to make the task of taking it out through using Pull that much more of a challenge. Anna brought up her free hand to wipe across her brow, the challenge ahead looking rather potent but she had faith that she could do this. Her successes thus far had made her confident; enough so that she felt that this smaller Portal enforced directional Pull was useful in getting specific items. Fool proof in some manner in her mind, though that might very well have been the urge attempting to subvert her.

Anna enforced a Pull upon the Portal for the final time, focusing the stream of her Djed into being tasked and to carry that task onto the gateway between This Side and The Other Side. She increased it steadily from what had been enough to absorb the gear, taking her fractional approach as before to attempt to get the most accurate gauge. She could do this; she felt that this was well within the scope of her abilities as a Voider. She could do this.

However as she continued to increase it and increase nothing spectacular occurred, nothing changed in the knife though it did wobble ever so slightly. So she increased the attractive force more and more, gritting her teeth as she did and keeping absolute focus. The directional Pull built up and up more and more to the sorceress’ will, enough to make the chair itself skid slightly across the floor a bit. That should have been her first warning of what was to come but the tall woman kept increasing it, knowing that she still had Djed remaining but it turned out Djed was not what she should have worried about.

As the Pull reached a high enough level the chair itself was ripped from the ground and sped towards the Portal, turning over itself in the air a bit. Anna had not been expecting it, so when she reacted to the projectile it was not enough to avoid it entirely. The larger object overwhelmed the Portal, dispelling it immediately from existence and severing the tall woman’s control over it. She jumped back to avoid it, but it hit her anyway square in the chest which caused her to lose her balance and fall over backwards to the floor.

She grunted as she landed on her back, the wind having been knocked from her lungs as she was left gasping for breath. Between that and the now splitting headache tearing through her skull, Anna was not a happy sorceress. When she recovered her breath she groaned in pain, the blow certainly having hurt and the chair fallen over nearby. It didn’t feel unbearable, like something was broken but she suspected she would be sporting some bruises for this little incident. Let along the headache and the exhaustion from casting left behind now that the euphoria was gone from her mind.

At the very least she had learned something about Pull, a sign that she was missing something from the equation in this matter. Her Pull, despite the small size of the Portal, was not geared towards certain objects but was instead too broad and generalized. That could be dangerous, as she could end up absorbing thing she had not meant to or causing too much damage. Either she did not yet know enough to have the answer, or she was missing the answer within her grasp. Either way, more experimentation as required. Though at a later date, after she was rested and recovered.
