Day 2 of Winter in the Year 513 AV
Aboard the Greytide pod pavilar, the Stormbrewer

Continued...

It had been nearly a month since the death and murder of Kel’s mentor. The rest of the Greytide pod seemed to have gotten over the deaths of their friends and companions with apparent ease since the Svefra’s demise at the hands of the magic user. The morpher had posed as Black Rock’s shipwright, offering to help the Svefra pod fix their damaged ship after a large storm had broken the mast. But after the repairs were finished, betrayed them and almost killed everyone on board. From the start, Kel knew the man shouldn’t be trusted but the lia refused to heed his warning. Because of her unforgivable choice, Gideon and four others died. The rest of the crew seemed to have moved on and appeared to shrug off the losses.

But not Kel.

Resentment, hatred and frustration roiled within the black haired Svefra, memories of the fateful night replaying itself over and over in his mind. Watching the look of shock cross Gideon’s face as the spear shoved itself through his chest. Watching as the light slowly faded from his blue eyes. Watching his body slowly slump to the ground, motionless. Over. And over. And over. Hundreds of different possibilities churned within his mind, ways he could have saved his mentor, one of the few people who actually mattered to the outcast Svefra.

Kel Greytide stood beside the gunwale of the paviler, blue eyes turned flecks of ice, boring into the horizon. Anger coursed through the Svefra, fingernails digging into the wood of the ship’s railing, knuckles turning white under the pressure. The continued memories only made the anger stronger, more volatile. It had been building, each day burning hotter and hotter, slowly spiraling into rage. Rage towards his pod, towards his lia. Because of her, Gideon was dead. Because she dismissed his instincts, the one person who accepted Kel for who he was, was gone, never to return.

“Kel! Shift your arse and man the starboard line!” A voice cut through his dark thoughts, dragging him back from the abyss in which he hovered. He didn’t even blink when he was addressed, but continued to stare stonily out to sea, barely registering the command. A few ticks later the voice barked out again. “You hear me?? Starboard line!” His fingernails dug even deeper into the wooden railing, anger growing stronger as he persisted in ignoring the instructions.

“You listening to me? I gave you an order!” A hand landed heavily on Kel’s shoulder and in that moment, something inside of him snapped. The pent up anger that had built from the last month finally burst forth from Kel in a torrent of fury. In one swift, vicious motion, the warrior balled his hand into a fist and wrapped his other hand around it, giving it extra momentum for maximum damage, driving his elbow as hard as he could straight back into the face of the crewmember behind him.

He felt and heard a sickening crunch as the Svefra’s nose broke under the blow. The man who had been ordering Kel crashed to the deck, hand jerking to his face as blood poured from the broken cartilage. He cried out, expression showing shock and pain. “What the shyke! You broke my nose!”

Kel spun and glared at him, fury burning in his eyes. His hands shook in anger as he glared down at the crew member. Activity and noise ceased on deck, all eyes trained on the conflict. Kel’s words were laced with rage. “Don’t petch with me, Lakor.”

The wounded Svefra staggered to his feet, hand still clutching his face. Another member of the pod tried stepping forward to tend to the wound but Lakor waved him off. He glared at Kel, blood running down his face and chin. His words were muffled under his hand but they still rang out clearly, loud enough for the rest of the pod on deck to hear.

“The lia put me in charge while she is busy in her quarters. That means you do what I tell you to, when I tell you to do it. I’m sick of your petching attitude! Where do you get off, thinking you’re better than us? You do nothing but disobey orders, pick fights and cause trouble among the pod.” Anger radiated in his voice and tension began to rise as the crew muttered in agreement.

Kel stepped directly in front of Lakor, blue eyes glinting dangerously. Fury fueled Kel’s words, clipping each syllable. “I. Don’t. Give. A. Petch. What. You. Think.” His face twisted into a sneer. “And I sure don’t give a single shyke what the petching lia put you in charge of.”

The social outcast shoved his face into the bloody Svefra’s, voice filled with venom. “If you don’t like my attitude, why don’t you try doing something about it.” The sneer turned into a hostile smirk, his sapphire eyes flashing as he goaded the acting captain into violence. Anger clouded Lakor’s judgment and he took the bait.

The bloody Svefra shoved Kel backwards and the rest of the crew quickly encircled the two. Lakor snarled at Kel and lashed out, fist flying towards the black haired Svefra’s face. Kel side stepped, easily avoiding the punch and drove his knee into his opponents stomach. Lakor wheezed as all the air was driven out of his lungs. Kel shoved him backwards and grinned wickedly.

“You can’t beat me, Lakor. You’re nothing but a petchin’ Jakri.”
He spat on the ground as Lakor clutched his stomach, gasping in vain, trying to get oxygen into his lungs. Kel crouched down arrogantly beside the Svefra so that he was eye level with his opponent. “What’s a petching fisherman know about fighting, ehh? Have you even thrown a punch before?” Kel grunted in disgust and stood as Lakor finally managed to regain his breath.

“I can see why you pathetic skykes left the Tempest pod. Or did they kick you out because none of you had any spine? At least they would have been a challenge to fight.” The murmuring grew louder, the crew shifting angrily as they glared at Kel, faces growing stormy.

Lakor stood upright and was about to charge the arrogant Svefra who insulted the Greytide pod but froze as an authoritative voice cracked through the air like a whip bringing everything to a stand still.

“What the petch is going on here?”

From Greytide to Tempest

The deck went completely silent, tension thick in the air. The circle of Svefra parted noiselessly, anger turning into glee as they anticipated the coming wrath that they expected to descend upon Kel. A woman stood at the edge of the circle, fire flashing in her sea blue orbs. Half a dozen pair of eyes flickered back and forth between the two, eagerly awaiting the confrontation. She slowly strode through the parted ranks, her gaze quickly taking in the bloodied Lakor before turning her stare upon Kel. He met her look with equal intensity.

“What is the meaning of this?” The lia of the Greytide pod demanded as she stood in front of him.

Kel’s fingers clenched into fists by his side as he glared at her defiantly.

“What’s it to you?” Anger flashed in the lia’s eyes at the Svefra’s blatant disrespect. Kel took a step closer to her, using his height to loom over her. He grinned down at her balefully, knowing full well the consequences for his actions. One did not attack fellow podmates, insult the pod and then challenge the lia openly. She had the blessing of Laviku to lead the pod. But Kel’s thoughts were clouded with rage and he realized only way to clear his mind from the chaos inside was to give in to the anger; accept it as who he was. Comprehension dawned on him and he was suddenly struck with blinding clarity.

Kel’s eyes bore into the small blonde haired woman and spoke coolly, anger prevalent in his voice. But there was an eerie calmness about him that none of the Greytides had seen before.

And it unnerved them.

“You betrayed us when you made the call to ignore my warning about the swine who killed our pod. You dismissed my gut feeling and let that petching whore onto our ship.” Kel’s words sliced through the air causing the lia to visibly recoil as if slapped.

“You betrayed me when you let Gideon die. It might as well been you who shoved the spear through his chest. His death is on your head, lia.” He almost spat the word out, teeth clenched, the fury coming back tenfold. Kel looked down at her scornfully before looking away in distaste. He stared at the gawking pod, voice tight with hostility.

“She couldn’t protect them. Because of her leadership, five of our pod is dead. She isn’t fit to be your leader and she sure as hell isn’t mine.”

There was nothing but stunned silence as the last word left the Svefra’s lips. With that statement he had publicly disowned the Greytide pod as his own and rejected them as his brethren. The only noise was the sound of loose lines snapping in the wind and the crashing of the waves against the hull of the ship. Kel shoved past the crew and moved towards a locker that was bolted down against the cabin. He threw the lip open and ripped his trident and kukri free. He shoved the curved blade against his lower back, securing it under his sash and gripped the three pronged trident in one hand.

Kel took half a dozen steps to the back of the Stormbrewer and leaped onto the railing of the gunwale, balancing as the ship shifted under the waves. His black sash snapped in the water, the razor sharp prongs of his weapon glinting in the sunlight. The Greytide pod watched him in silence as he stood staring at them arrogantly. The Svefra took a deep breath and bellowed.

“JEEEEEENKINS!”

Nothing happened for a few ticks until suddenly a small face poked out from the crowd of feet standing on the deck. Small whiskers twitched as the small animal looked up at him. Kel met the gaze of his tavan and a small grin appeared on his face as he looked at the sea otter.

“C’mon, we’re out’a here Jenkins.” The humor instantly drained from his face as he turned his attention back towards the pod. He stared at them, eyes glinting dangerously once more.

“I’ve had enough of this pathetic excuse of a Svefra pod you claim to be. You used to be great; pirates roaming the high sea, taking what you wanted, burning the rest. But you’re weak. You lost your petching backbone the moment you parted ways with the Tempest. You’re cowards, the lot of you. If it weren’t for me, you’d all be dead. If I hadn’t killed that petching magic user at Black Rock, you’d all have had your throats slit. Just remember that.”

Kel swung his trident through the air, slicing through a rope that was tied to the Stormbrewer. The Laviku’s Wrath that trailed along behind the pavilar, floated free. He pointed his trident at the lia of the Greytide, fire burning in his eyes.

“You allowed someone important to be taken from me. Now I’m going to take something you cherish from you.” He stared at her darkly, hoping the theft of her beloved vessel that held so many dear memories to her, would hurt as much as the loss of Gideon did to him. It could never amount to the same. But it was a start.

“Know this; the score isn’t even close to being settled. If I see you again, it won’t be under such courteous terms.”

A pang of sadness stabbed at his chest as he instinctively looked for Gideon in the crowd and didn’t see his face. He forced the pain deep within himself, refusing to allow any weakness to show. Emotion was the enemy. It only brought pain.

Kel jerked his head towards the ocean and Jenkins scurried across the wooden floor boards towards the side of the deck. Without a moment’s hesitation, the small mammal balled his muscles together and leaped through the air; disappear over the edge from sight. Kel smirked one last time at the Greytide pod, arrogance dripping from his voice.

“I’ll see you petchers in hell.”

And with that, Kel made one last obscene gesture at them before stepping off the railing and disappearing into the ocean below.

From Greytide to Tempest

One Week Later

The Laviku’s Wrath bobbed in the sea, the sun having crested the horizon just a few bells earlier. The bright rays beamed across the surface of the water, causing an explosion of glittering light shimmering through the crisp air. All was silent except for the cry of gulls floating lazily through the air and the gentle lap of water against the ship’s hull.

The cabin door’s hinges squeaked noisily, disturbing the silence as it was thrown open. A blurrily eyed Svefra stumbled out from the small room and stood dazed on the deck of the ship, black hair sticking up wildly. He yawned loudly and scratched his bare chest lazily as his body slowly woke up. The ship bobbed up and down and he didn’t move for a few chimes, enjoying the soothing motion of the sea.

Kel finally sighed and stepped over to the side of the ship. The vessel tilted as the weight was shifted and he gripped the side of the railing with both hands, staring into the water. His reflection looked back at him, blue eyes staring gazing at him passively. The Svefra shoved his face under the icy cold water before throwing his head back out of the water the cold jerking his body awake and he gasped. He shook his head, water droplets flying every which way.

The former Greytide wandered into his cabin and threw open a chest, rifling through its contents. After a few ticks he slammed the chest shut in frustration, both hands resting on the wooden surface, head between his shoulders. He spun after a moment and leaned against the wooden box. A shape shifted under a blanket on the bed and a startled sea otter poked his head out from under the covers. Jenkins’ whiskers twitched as he looked at Kel after being rudely awoken at the sound of the slamming chest.

“Why didn’t you tell me we had no fruit on the ship!” Kel snapped irritably as he stared back at his tavan companion. Jenkins chattered at him loudly. “I told you to tell me when we ran out. Now I’m gonna get scurvy because of you, you little petcher…”

There was a silence as the two looked at one another in silence. Finally Kel pushed off the chest and spoke again. “You’re lucky, little shyke that I want company, otherwise I’d feed you to the sharks for your mistake. But whatever, we ain’t gonna findin’ no oranges floatin’ out here. Up for a pitstop?”

Kel scowled at his tavan and stepped through the door back out into the open air. The seafaring man moved over to the stern of the casinor and gripped a small lever that was attached to the gunwale of the ship. A thick chain extended from the side of the ship into the water. Kel slowly began cranking the metal contraption, gripping the railing to brace himself as the chain slowly began to move upwards. After a few chimes, a large U shaped piece of metal lifted out of the water. Kel placed a small pin through two holes in the lever, holding the anchor in place.

Having secured the anchor from trailing along the bottom of the ocean, the Svefra moved to the mast and untied the sail from the wooden spar running along the deck. After the loose sails were released, Kel gripped a looped rope that ran along the mast and began pulling, the small pulley system moving the rope in a continuous circle, raising the sail into the air. He quickly tied off the pulley rope that held it in place before crossing the deck to the bow.

Kel tossed a tied rope off the wheel of the ship and spun it portside. The boom shifted and he ducked under it as it swung overhead. The wind caught a hold of the course fabric and jerked the vessel forwards. Jenkins scurried out of the cabin and leaped onto the roof of the cabin, curling up into a ball in front of Kel. He glowered at the sea otter but the feeling of the wind blowing against his bareback and the spray of the waves as they sliced through the water lightened his mood. He gave Jenkins a begrudging smirk.

“Alright mate, ready to find some of those delightfully life saving foods?”

Two bells later

The seafaring Svefra spotted land on the horizon a bell ago and turned the casinor in its direction. They eventually came close enough to the sandy shore to allow an easy wade to the beach. Kel spun the wheel so the sail listed in the wind and threw the looped rope over the wheel to keep it in place. He swiftly crossed the deck and grabbed at the pulley system once again, lowering the white sail. A few chimes past before he finished securing the sail.

Kel moved over to the bow again and pulled out the pin holding the anchor in place watching as it hit the water with a splash. The vessel floated forwards a few feet and the black haired Svefra braced himself as the ship jerked to a halt. Kel nodded satisfied with his handy work and moved into his cabin. He returned a few ticks later, barefoot, bare-chested and trident in hand. He looked over at the small tavan.

“Righto, ready mate?”

Kel ran forward and planted one foot on the railing of his newly acquired ship before throwing himself through the air into the water. He hit the water in a semi dive, Jenkins not far behind. He broke the surface of the ocean, the freezing water glittering in the sun. He swam for a few feet before being able to touch the sandy ground and stood, wading towards shore, Jenkins paddling contently beside him. After a few chimes the two climbed onto the beach, sopping wet. A wind blew through the air, causing his flesh to raise small bumps from the chill. He shook his limbs, water droplets flying everywhere.

Kel spun his trident once, prongs reflecting the sun and began trudging towards the forest on the hunt.

From Greytide to Tempest

The two crossed the sandy beach and entered the heavily forested area on the edge of the shore. Ferns sprouted out of the ground, large leafed bushes and thick trunks trees jutted from the soft earth as sand converted into dirt. Kel stumbled awkwardly on the ground as his legs adjusted from sea life to that of the steady ground. He grumbled irritably as he took unsteady steps, refusing to stop and allow his legs to adjust, leaves and branches dying under the destruction his trident made as he carved his way through the forest.

Kel scanned the tree tops for any dangling, brightly colored fruits. Jenkins pattered along the forest floor, weaving in and out of bushes alongside the Svefra. Suddenly Kel yelled, cursing in pain as he hopped on one foot. He looked down at the ground and spotted the sharp rock he had stepped on. The injured man glared at it before leaning down and snatching it up. He threw it as hard as he could into the bushes. Having exacted his revenge, Kel grumbled to himself and continued cutting a swath of devastation more vehemently.

The two carried on that way for a while, weaving through tree trunks and rock outcrops as they made their way deeper into the forest. Kel had a collection of small cuts across his torso and arms from vengeful branches attempting to spite him. A flash of color caught his attention and he came to a halt. The Svefra craned his neck and stared up at the branches of the tree off to the side. A dozen small, orange and green orbs dangled from the foliage. Kel chuckled in relief.

“Oh thank god. For a second I forgot it was winter and knew it would be a long shot if we found anything. But Jenkins! I’ve done it! I have found our life source! No thanks to you.” He shot a look around for the small critter but he couldn’t find the spiteful mammal. He grunted and chopped the branches closest to him with the sharp blades of his three pronged weapon until he came to the base of the tree.

Kel propped his trident up against the thick tree and eyed the rough bark. He placed one hand against the wooden surface and lifted the other a few feet higher. Kel jumped slightly and gripped the bark with his toes and slowly began climbing. He lifted one hand over the other, moving higher and higher until he managed to climb into a fork in the middle of the tree. Kel lay on his stomach and slowly inched his way across the thin branch away from the trunk. He stopped half a dozen feet away and reached for a greenish fruit and plucked it.

The Svefra held the fruit in the air triumphantly. But it was short lived as he realized he didn’t have anything to put it in.

“Blast it Jenkins! I told you to bring the basket!” He was greeted silence. He grumbled crossly when the tavan didn’t appear.

“Jenkins? JEEEEEENKINS! C’mere you petchin’ jelly wabbler!” Finally the bushes rustled and the brown faced sea otter poked his face out from the shrubbery and looked up at Kel. The Svefra spotted him and the animal chattered at him. Kel glared.

“What do you mean I didn’t tell you to grab them! Of course I did! I specifically reminded you to remind me to grab them before we left.” Kel hucked the half ripened orange at the tavan irked but the fruit fell short of its target. Jenkins pattered forwards and sniffed at it curiously. Kel hollered at him irritably.

“Don’t you dare eat that, Jenkins! That’s to keep me from dying of a terrible disease! If you as much as lick that piece of fruit I will hang you by your tail from the mast and fly you like a petching flag!”

Kel shuffled forwards on the branch, reaching for the next fruit when a loud crack resounded in the air. He froze. Kel gulped and slowly looked over his shoulder, spotting a large crack in the base of the branch. He swallowed and tried to ease backwards but a splintering noise filled his ears.

“Laviku help me…”

And the branch snapped.

Kel yelped as he tumbled eight feet to the shrubbery below. He landed in the brush with an ompf as the wind was knocked out of him. Jenkins scuttled over to his fallen friend and rubbed his wet nose in Kel’s face who groaned as he lay on his back, staring up at the leafy treetops. It took a few chimes but he was finally able to sit upright and get air back into his lungs. He rubbed his neck ruthfully while absentmindedly running a hand over the top of Jenkins’ head.

He finally stood, body sore but able to move accordingly and bent down to the broken branch, stripping the wood of the orange and green fruit that had survived the fall. After he gathered a decent size pile he stood and looked around for something to hold them in. He spotted a plant with large, flat leaves and ripped one off. He piled the unripe fruit together and wrapped the leaf around them, forming a small pouch. He snatched up his trident and followed the path of destroyed plant life back to his ship.

It was less than thirty chimes by the time they reached the beach once again. Kel wasn’t paying attention to what was in front of him as he picked his way through the path, avoiding sharp objects. Which was why he didn’t see the four armed men standing on the beach, two wading out towards the Laviku’s Wrath and two standing on the shore facing the water.

It wasn’t until he was halfway across the beach that the sound of voices caused him to jerk up from his thoughts and zero in on the men. They hadn’t seemed to notice him yet. Kel’s blue eyes narrowed as he realized the new arrivals were attempting to steal his vessel. He dropped the leaf containing his lifesaving fruit with a soft thump, the oranges forgotten, a few rolling across the dry sand.

The Svefra didn’t announce his presence with a challenge or flowery words.

Kel charged across the beach, sand flying up in his wake, trident in one hand, intent on stopping the men who dared touch his ship.

Four on one? Kel grinned viciously. He liked his odds. They should have brought more men.

All pain from his fall was forgotten as his attention was completely focused on the two men standing on the shore, the ones who dared to attempt to steal his ship. Only the former Greytide was allowed to steal the Laviku’s Wrath. If they thought they were going to make off with an easy theft, they were in for a rude surprise. He was almost on top of them when one turned and saw the enraged Svefra sprinting towards them. He managed to shout out a warning while fumbling with his sword at his waist before Kel was upon them.

The trident flashed in the sunlight as Kel slammed the three jagged blades into the exposed back of the other man who had just began to turn in confusion at his companion’s shout. The weapon’s prongs sunk deeply around the man’s spine and into the soft tissue, ripping through muscles and blood vessels. He cried out in shock and pain but Kel ignored him, not having a moment to savor the kill. He planted a foot next to the trident and shoved the man away as he ripped his weapon free as the first man pulled his short sword free and swung.

Kel lifted his bloodied trident just in time, catching the sword in between his hands on the leather wrapped metal pole. He shoved upwards, knocking the weapon up and away. The other two men who were chest deep in the ocean water turned at the sounds of combat and shouted in surprise when they saw one of their companions on the ground, blood dying the sand red while the other fought. They began wading back towards shore, weapons held overhead.

Kel ignored them, knowing he would have to deal with them soon enough. He got the drop on one but he still had three armed men to deal with. His odds weren’t good but he thrived on challenges. If it was easy, he would find a way to make it a challenge. Kel smirked at the man who eyed him warily. He could see a flicker of fear in the man’s eyes. The Svefra had come out of nowhere, possibly killed one of them without a sound and was now trying to kill him. Kel snarled just to stoke that fear.

Kel lunged forward and smashed his trident against the man’s sword, knocking it aside. The Svefra spun in the dirt, pivoting around the man so that they were almost back to back and slammed the butt of his trident into the man’s lower spine, causing him to stumble forward.

The Svefra spun around so that he was once again facing the water line where the other two men had finally reached the shore. The man that Kel had slammed the end of his trident into had recovered and glared at Kel as he winced in pain. His twisted look was replaced by an evil leer as his friends fanned out beside him. They held their weapons at the ready as they began circling the Svefra.

Kel bared his teeth into a snarl and held his trident across his chest in both hands, eyeing the approaching crew. The man Kel had attacked spoke up, his gravelly voice rumbling deep from his chest.

“What the petch is your problem?! You just killed our friend!”

“Yeh’ tried stealin’ me ship. Tis’ only fair, mate.” Kel smirked as he looked at the three, his gnosis tattoo dancing across his chest. They looked at him incredulously before trading glances. They looked back towards Kel but none of them responded but stared at him grimly.

As one they attacked.

A hammer swung down towards Kel’s face and he knocked the oversized tool away. The Svefra shifted, allowing his body to continue with the motion as he directed himself towards another opponent, lifting his trident, parrying the short sword between his grip. Unfortunately, Kel misjudged his abilities as the third combatant swung his club from behind the trident wielding warrior and the heavy wood crashed into the back of the black haired Svefra’s head.

Light and sound blended into one as pain exploded in the back of his head, his body going numb. His weapon dropped from his nerveless fingers and he slowly dropped to his knees. Kel swayed there a moment before falling onto his stomach, face buried in the sand.
The last thing he saw were three blurry faces looming over him before a boot came down and everything went black.

Thump thump.

Thump thump.

Thump thump.

The sound repeated itself over and over like the beating of a heart. A dull ache reverberated in his skull, his first thoughts desperately craving the blissful peace of unconsciousness. Sounds slowly began filtering back into his mind, a crackling of a fire, the loud chirping of crickets and the laughter of drunken men, each feeling like a sledgehammer slamming into his head.

“Oh god…”

The words came out slurred as his voice cracked, throat parched from lack of water. The barely conscious man groaned and slowly opened his eyes, wincing as the fire stabbed painfully into his pupils. Kel looked around blurrily, confused as to what was happening. He tried moving but met resistance and he looked down in confusion. Strands of rope held him pinned to a tree. He groaned and gave up for the time being.

Kel tried to stop the pounding in his head but it was to no avail. Apparently he had been unconscious for quite some time. Night had fallen and the three men were celebrating their victory in obtaining a new ship; or mourning the loss of their fallen comrade. It was hard to tell in their drunken state. Either way, the Svefra was tied to a tree, which did not bode well for him. He was surprised they kept him alive, honestly. Had it been him, he would have slit their throats and been done with it.

The Svefra kept quiet, so not to attract the attention of his kidnappers as he tried to ignore his throbbing head and figure a way out of his situation. He cast his eyes about for some kind of sharp object to cut through his bindings but his attackers seemed to have known better than to leave anything in his vicinity. Kel sighed and closed his eyes. He rested his head back against the tree.

The drunken voices got louder and one of the men seemed to discover their captive was awake.

“Oi! He be awake!” The slurred words seemed to run together as three heads turned towards the Svefra tied to the tree. All three seemed to rise as one and stagger over to the captive. The man who Kel had originally started fighting shoved his face into the Svefra’s. His breath reeked of alcohol and filth as he glared angrily at Kel.

“Ye’ killed our mate! Stabbed ‘em rite inna back ye’ did! Fer n-n-no good reason!” The man staggered slightly as he swayed backwards. They had taken very heavily to their bottles, something the Svefra was very jealous of at that moment. He smirked at them, not put off in the slightest even though he was at the disadvantage and unable to defend himself.

“Aye mate, tis’ a deservin’ fate. Yeh’ should know better than ‘un be takin’ a Svefra’s ship.” Kel tsked in mock disapproval. The man grunted angrily and backhanded the prisoner across the face. The black haired Svefra’s face jerked to the side, an angry welt instantly welling up across the side of his face.

Kel kept his head to the side where the blow forced it before slowly tilting his it up, fire smoldering in his blue eyes. He didn’t say a word but allowed a dark smile to slowly creep across his face, resembling more of a snarl than a grin. The drunk looked at him nervously before pointing a finger in his face. He glanced down at the rope fearfully and then back at the Svefra’s dangerous face, taking stock in the fact that the prisoner was securely bound.

“En-en-enjoy ye’ night cuz inna’ mornin’ w-w-we gonna string ye up!” The three men roared with laughter at the joke and staggered back towards their fire pit. Kel grit his teeth in anger, jerking at the rope, trying to wrestle free. But they were too tightly tied. The Svefra grunted quietly and continued to fight his restrains in hope that they would break. He ignored the laughter and drunken stories that were passed around along with the bottle, a dozen feet away.

He had no idea how much time passed but he continued to try and free himself. Enough time passed for the fire to turn into smoldering embers and the sound of voices to slowly fade into loud snores. Then it was just him and the sounds of the nocturnal. The captive jerked the ropes, trying to feel some give when a snap brought his efforts to a halt. He narrowed his eyes and stared into the darkness.

Nothing happened and he almost returned to his attempts at breaking free when a bush rustled. This time closer. Kel froze.

“Great. And this is how I go out. Tied to a tree and unable to defend myself…Damn you fate…damn you…”

Kel stared hard into the bushes, daring whatever it was to show itself. The bushes shook more violently as the thing inside got closer and closer. And then he saw it.

A small, furry head poked out from the bushes a few feet away from him, its whiskers twitching cheekily. Two beady eyes peered at him through the darkness and a quiet chittering noise reached his ears. Kel glared at the small mammal, disbelief written across his face.

“JEN-“ Kel began to yell in anger but clamped his mouth shut. He grit his teeth angrily, words coming out in a hiss.

“Jenkins you son of a petching weasel faced, no good, backstabbing, walking carpet brained, useless jellybag!” Kel ranted breathless, finally running out of words. He stared balefully at his tavan. “You just left me while I stood tied to this tree! Help me get free, this, INSTANT!”

The otter chittered and Kel glared at him.

“No you do not get the entire bed to yourself when we get out of this…”

The sea otter stared at him silently. Kel continued to glare at him until finally he huffed irritably.

“Fine, but you only get it to yourself Mondays and Fridays. Every other day we share it. Deal? Now get me out!” The small otter chittered delighted and scuttled from the bush over to Kel. The Svefra pushed his back flat against the tree and extended his legs together like a ramp, allowing the sea otter to climb up towards his lap, sharp nails digging into his legs.

Once Jenkins was high enough, Kel brought one leg back, pushing his foot against the trunk of the tree, allowing the small mammal to perch on his extended leg. The critter began chewing on the ropes that bound the captive, sharp teeth slowly gnawing through the thick rope.

It would be a long night.
