Aoren sat quietly reviewing notes from the classes he had attended at the University thus far. In the past few days he had learned more about magic than he had ever expected to in the whole of his life. The sheer amount of knowledge that was to found at the University was staggering to the Drykas man. After a long day of studying with his teacher and doing a fair bit of research in the library he had retired to his room. Shortly after getting there he had fed and bathed his faithful companion. Isikai currently lay at his feet, the dog having been tuckered out after Aoren had taken him for a run. All in all, it had been a very productive day. Still there was something else that Aoren wanted to do.

Standing up from his bed he was careful not to bother his dog. Isikai merely raised his head fixing Aoren with a curious look before making himself comfortable again. Walking up to the window he brushed his fingers over the glass studying the grain of it for a moment. He tapped each pane before thinking quietly to himself looking out at the landscape of the campus for a few breaths. Inhaling steadily he closed his eyes drawing upon the inner focus he would need to accomplish what he intended to do. Slowly he sifted through his thoughts concentrating not on emptying his mind but a singular thought to the exclusion of all others.

As the noise of a busy mind faded he reached for his Djed. With a concentrated effort he propelled his Djed into motion drawing upon it opening his eyes watching as it manifested in his hands. He stared at the Djed furrowing his brow willing more to be produced until he was certain he might have enough. Reaching up he placed both hands to the window mentally commanding the Djed to stick to its surface. While it took a little concentrated effort the command was eventually obeyed. Once that was finished Aoren began the slow work of spreading the Djed over the surface of the window. He began in one corner watching as his Djed lingered there before he began to spread it with gentle prodding of his fingers.

As he worked with the Djed he instilled in it the properties of a rudimentary Shield. He wove the threads of the construct to form a protective barrier over the surface of the glass. All the while he pushed and pulled at the Djed he focused on tasking it with the singular purpose of blocking out sunlight. While it was slow going at first the eventual flickering of the sunlight streaming through the corner of the window he was working on told him the tasking was falling into place. Carefully he kept pulling at the edges of the Djed until a quarter of the window was covered by the Shield. Reaching for that mental clarity once again, Aoren produced more Djed to weave into the fabric of his Shield.

He was well aware that the Shield would only maintain itself so long as he was working with it. The Djed he had produced as constantly adding to the deteriorating structure of the Shield. It was a little on the frustrating side but if he was to get any stronger with this particular magic he needed to work with it more.

As variations in the density and thickness of the Shield arose Aoren focused on dispersing his Djed evenly throughout the weave. Finally when half of the window had been effectively covered with the miniscule Shield he took a step back. For a few moments half of the room was blanketed in shadows while the other half was filled with light. It wasn’t long before holes began to form in the Shield that he had constructed but Aoren didn’t mind. He had proven to himself that he was able to construct a Shield somewhat larger than he was accustomed to.

It’s time to push that limit.

Pushing himself to the limits with Personal magic was always a risk. At the moment he didn’t actually know what his limit was with Shielding but he was going to find out. He could feel the tiredness that came with Djed use but he didn’t feel as if he were about to push himself over the edge. Stepping back up to the window he produced more Djed in his hands then began the work of reconstructing the Shield over its surface. The work was still just as slow going as before but Aoren pushed forward with slightly more confidence than before.

Diligently he spread the Djed over the glass of the window this time instilling it with the task of blocking out sight. However, he didn’t simply command the weave of the Shield to block vision. More he concentrated on making the threads of the Shield opaque. He envisioned the Shield causing a watery distortion over the surface of the glass that blurred everything seen through it. Little by little he watched as the weave of the Shield reflected the desires of his will. There were still some portions of it that did not completely obey his tasking. For those sections he attempted a different approach. Pressing his fingers to a particularly stubborn section of the growing Shield he flicked it with the tips of his fingers causing a ripple in the Djed. He then impressed upon the Djed the distortion he desired until it settled and showed the blurriness properly.

Steadily he pushed the edges of the Shield to cover the expanse of the glass. He could feel the strain of constructing a Shield of this size working in the stiffness of his muscles. Beads of sweat were beginning to form on his brow but he still felt that there was a still some work that he could do. Generating more Djed he pushed it into the weave of his Shield so that he could weave together the edges that were falling away from each other. After several more minutes of focusing purely on letting the Shield gain size and shape he stepped back looking at the window.

The Shield covered the entirety of the glass. It was undoubtedly the largest Shield that Aoren had constructed. He had exhausted all of his understanding of the Personal magic in its creation which wasn’t saying much. Still, he was rather impressed with himself though the weight of producing such a Shield was certainly felt in his body. His muscles ached. He felt as if he’d just run for an extended period of time. He wiped the sweat off of his brow taking a deep breath. He smiled watching as the Shield actually lingered in place for a few minutes before it began to deteriorate. He could see small holes beginning to form in its weave.

Stepping up he placed a hand on the Shield pushing just a small amount of his Djed into it once more. The strength of the Shield was restored if only for a few minutes more as he added more to its weave. Aoren knew that he wouldn’t be able to maintain a Shield of this magnitude for very long but it was helping him to grow and understand the magic. He still felt as if there was more that he could do. Folding his arms over his chest he watched as the Shield over the window deteriorated.

How else can I expand my knowledge when it comes to weaving a Shield?

It was a tricky question. There really wasn’t much out there that he had access to in the way of Shielding. In Syliras he had seen a number of mage knights who practiced the discipline. No doubt they had garnered their knowledge from each other. It wouldn’t have surprised him that the Knights possessed some rather extensive work on the magic of Shielding given its usefulness to their cause. Aoren eyed the Shield as it finally collapsed. He could feel the stiff ache in his body that told him he would need a little focus aide for his next attempt.

Rolling his shoulders he went to one of the shelves where rested his painting supplies. Aoren was hardly an artist. The whole reason for him acquiring the paint was so that he had access to materials for his Glyphing practices more readily. Taking down his paint and brushes he set them on his writing desk then grabbed his waterskin emptying the contents into a small bowl. Taking his seat he dipped his medium sized brush into the paint then set to work detailing the outlines of a Focus on his palm. Aoren had become increasingly better at drawing Glyphs. He certainly wasn’t a master at them but he felt he had the fundamentals firmly in hand. The details were becoming less tedious to draw and his skill at getting them to effectively channel and alter the course of the magic he directed at them was growing.

It would still be quite a long ways before he was capable of performing any grand feats with them but it was a work in progress. Much like the rest of the magics that he practiced. When he had finished filling in the finer points of the Focus on his palm he then turned to structuring a Path along the length of his forearm. It was a method that he had employed before. The building of two Barriers so that he could channel the strength of his magic through them was delicate work. Midway through the tracing of a rune he found that he had made a mistake. Carefully he rubbed away the rune then drew the correct one in its place.

Aoren still wasn’t quite good at linking together all of the different types of Glyphs. He could string together a Focus, Barrier and Trigger well enough but it took him hours upon hours of work to get the details of incorporating all components of a more extensive sigil together. When finally his left hand and arm were finished he sat back setting his brush down rubbing at the soreness in the base of his neck. Looking out the window he saw that the sun was beginning its descent over the horizon.

Dusk was settling over the land and soon Leth would claim dominion over the night skies. As he waited for the paint on his arm to dry he closed his eyes simply letting the weight of his tiredness lull him into a semi-conscious state. His mind was relatively clear of thoughts in that lucid state. It was only when he found himself drifting forward that he sat back up taking a deep breath through his nostrils. Rubbing his face Aoren blinked a few times clearing his throat.

I’m going to sleep heavy tonight.

A small smile touched his lips as he picked up his brush in his left hand. Setting to work, he dipped the tip of the brush into the paint then repeated the series of runes on the surface of his right hand and forearm. It was slow work but he was able to complete it at a quicker pace than he once was. He was beginning to make fewer minute mistakes while drawing with his left hand. The ease with which he could switch back and forth between hands was growing. It was a small victory among the multitude of challenges that came with practicing the disciplines of magic.

Aoren often stopped to wonder how his life would have turned out if he had not been introduced to magic. Would he still be in Syliras? Would he have turned to the martial lifestyle of the Knights? No. Most likely not. While Aoren was gaining in skill as an unarmed combatant and could wield his quarterstaff with a modicum of ease he was no knight. He could not see himself dedicating his life to the cause of a deity from ages long past. Besides, he was only just beginning to grasp the will of Avalis and her divine sister Rak’keli.

As he completed the second set of Glyphs he looked between the two for comparison. They were largely similar with slight variations due to positioning. Satisfied that he would be able to achieve what he wanted Aoren stood up going to the window once more. Syna was no longer in the sky. Leth, her eternal companion was rising to shed his pale light over the land. Aoren could see the stars glinting in the heavens awaiting the arrival of the Moon God.

Taking a deep breath Aoren dug deep. He dipped into his Djed reserves pushing it outward into his hands. The process was aided by the Glyphs drawn upon the surface of his skin but it was still slower than he would have liked. Speed and ability would come with time he supposed. Even with the assistance of the Glyphs however he felt the immediate strain of working with his Shielding once again. The muscles in his back twitched. As his Djed flowed over the surface of the glass he was immediately sweating again. His heart rate increased and he found himself struggling to focus without forcing himself to push other thoughts away.

Once again he spread the Djed over the surface of the glass. It was far more difficult this time. The strands of the Shield simply refused to weave together. The width and breadth of the Shield was deteriorating faster than he could maintain it. He was forced to move his hands quickly across its surface pushing thicker deposits of Djed down and spreading them outward to construct a viable Shield. He didn’t bother with a more advanced task at this stage. He was simply too tired at this point. He simply instilled in this Shield the most basic of tasks that he knew of which was to just block other Djed. It was simple and rudimentary at best. By the time he managed to cover even a quarter of the window his legs were shaking until he knew that if he pushed himself any further he would cross a threshold for which there would be dire consequences.

Aoren released his hold on the magic. The moment he did his legs gave out beneath him and he fell to the floor gasping for breath. He was taking in large gulps of air. His heart was pounding in his chest. His whole body was shaking. Aoren managed to situate himself against one of the legs of his bed. A gentle whine caught his attention. Isikai had quietly padded over to his side. The dog nudged Aoren’s arm prompting the Drykas man to life a hand and run his unsteady fingers through his fur.

I’m okay, Isikai. I’m okay.” Still his canine companion moved closer sitting down in Aoren’s lap. Leaning back he stared up at the ceiling for a few minutes. The Glyphs along his arms had faded as he expected them to. It surprised him how difficult getting a handle on Shielding was. After wielding Reimancy with a level of ease for so long he had forgotten just how draining the difficulties of mastering a new form of magic were.

Aoren sat there for a long time simply waiting to regain his strength. The whole while he took solace in the comfort that his dog brought. He had a very long ways to go before he didn’t struggle so heavily with his magic. He wondered where those roads would take him. He supposed he would find out in due time.
