The mirrors in the House of Broken Mirrors aren’t really broken. Some even go as far as to say that there aren’t any mirrors at all, just shadows of reality that creep behind glass and mimic the gestures of the House visitors when they feel like it. There are many houses in Alvadas, but only one House – the one whose walls are made of dark brown stone with no windows, the one with a plaque hanging on its door that reads “Do The neighborhood kids often dare each other to enter the House. It is even considered an informal rite of passage among the city’s permanent residents. Those visiting Alvadas often view the House as a place they simply must visit, just like the sacred Temple of Ionu and the glorious Bizarre. But the House of Broken Mirrors is no tourist attraction. It was not meant for light-hearted entertainment, nor for guided tours. There is never anyone watching over the House, nobody collecting a fee upon entrance, or guarding the doors. Whoever is brave or stupid enough to walk in simply does and that becomes the end of that. Sometimes it really does turn out to be the end – in rare cases of a life, but more often of an individual’s sanity. The mirrors in the House toy with your perception of the world and of yourself. Some swear they have seen monsters creeping around in the depth of the glass, while others maintain that they could not even glimpse their own reflections in the empty glass surfaces. Some say they could hear weeping and howling. Others have simply disappeared and never been found, as if the reflections sucked them in piece by piece. The mirrors seem to reflect sound as well as light, sending echoes of every footstep reverberating throughout the halls. At least, that’s what they do on their more normal days. There are times when the mirrors stay completely silent, sucking in the sound around them, so that no matter how hard you scream, nobody will hear you. So by all means, enter the House of Broken Mirrors and try your luck at making it through. But know that turning back will not be easy. The mirrors will compel you to stay – tempt and frighten you into submission. Still, there is always the chance you will learn something valuable about yourself in the House of Broken Mirrors. After all, the monster lurking in the shadows of the mirror might very well be yourself. |
