[ooc=OOC]Hehe I'm glad. Una doesn't mean to be judgmental but she sure can sound it sometimes XD[/url]

“Yes she is a doll...um movement? Er...magic I suppose.”

His in-eloquent and stuttered speech rubbed against her skin making it tingle horribly. If she hadn't been so utterly focused on pleasing all she may very well had said something, Cy certainly would have. I've depended on Cy for my identity for so long, for him to say things that would otherwise have gone unsaid...perhaps these are things I should be saying? But despite her self doubt she held her tongue her her propensity for manners halted it on the tip of her tongue and forced it back down into the bowel of her stomach.

Una was delighted to find someone so forthcoming about magic. Having been raised in Wind Reach where even the tingle of magic could arouse hysteria, especially since the release of Ivak she had had little time to speak of such things. In Avanthal, where she had been introduced to her first type of magic, Spiritism, there was a great amount of superstition and fear surrounding each and every form. Lhavit was a pleasant exception and nearly every citizen seemed far more concerned with learning than flippant power games based on an individuals knowledge.

“She can function like any other human child, though she can’t catch up to the learning speed of one. Yes she can understand you to a certain degree...sleeping? No she does not. Her creator would be me.”

"Oh? But she CAN learn then? How can one use magic to teach something inanimate to learn? Learning is such a complex action..." She wondered at the complexity it must require to duplicate something as abstract as learning.

"Do they learn like dogs or like children?" Not having a notion that he may take offence to her comparison of Arya to a dog she continued to stare at him with both literal and metaphorical rose tinted eyes. "I mean...can she only learn simple things, that you ask her to do over and over again based on simple words...like sit? or can she learn complex social norms and processes like children if given the time? How complex can you make a doll? If they are made of magic can they use it themselves? Do they have Djed...or souls?" She whispered the last few words, unsure if it was appropriate to talk of things so blatantly, even in Lhavit.

"Well blessed! That is quite incredible...if you can create things like this why doesn't the whole city run on them? They could do nearly every job I imagine! and they could do it all day without breaks or food...right?" Her thoughts whiskered away in a blur as she thought of the many uses of such a doll to both herself and the Councillor Radiant... why instead of copying everything manually she could simply instruct the doll to do it, or have the doll sort things... The idea was becoming more attractive with every second.

Realizing how quickly she had dominated the conversation would probably have embarrased most individuals but it was a thought that simply didn't cross the Charoda's mind. Why should she be embarrased about being curious? Besides, it wasn't as if she was dominating the conversation with information about herself. On the contrary she was making the conversation all about him. However at ease she was with her choice when the proprietor had once again arrived at their table to take their order Una had no idea what she wanted.

“Hm? Oh right...I picked out the curry and for tea the...um Sunrise blend...how about you?”

"I am simple starving sir. Please bring me whatever is delicious and ripe at your discretion. Just no meat." She added swiftly unsure if the presence of a Charoda population nearby lent itself to that assumption or not. While she spoke to the grizzled man before her she was very aware of the cautious glances thrown at her from the direction of her companion. The attention was something she was all too familiar with but had experienced very little of since arriving in Lhavit.

“What's...what is it like? Outside of Lhavit I mean. Why come here to Lhavit? Was it because of the stories? The words of others?”

Oh! She nearly exclaimed aloud, He isn't curious because of my appearance but because of my history...how very refreshing and intriguing indeed. Recalling that she had only told him of her history in Wind Reach she cautiously argued within herself how much to tell him of her reason for leaving and coming.

"I actually knew almost nothing of Lhavit when I chose to come here. A sailor had arrived that I had had the pleasure of meeting upon the ocean a season previous, he was on his way to Lhavit. I invited myself along." She left it at that, the memory of full story too personal and fresh to reveal to a stranger.

"Wind Reach? Well...It's not so different and yet so very different. It's situated on the top of a volcano, very like Lhavit but one doesn't often see the sky as most of thorough fares are inside the mountain. They have the Wind Eagles and Endals as I'm sure you know. The Wind Eagles are a very proud creature, even at their most playful and curious I am sure they have thought of gobbling me up." She added, remembering her experience with the Wind Eagle fledling in her childhood.

"There are no Charoda there beyond my family so the sea is far lonelier than here." She added, "but the reef is far more voluptuous and the creatures far more exotic than I have seen here thus far. Perhaps because there are fewer boats to disturb the waters.

The mountains are quite barren, while the valleys are lush and full of game I hear. The people...well there is a reason they are known for their fiery temper. They have little patience for outsiders and in my opinion...they are a little barbaric. Their library is ill kept and a whisper of magic could arouse a riot I am very sure. They are divided into strict classes, into which they are born into and cannot escape from.

The land outside Lhavit in general...it is dangerous." She hesitated ominously, reminded of the Orca that had so very nearly taken her life last season. "You may not see many creatures here that tread too far into Lhavit but in Wind Reach and the Sea the danger comes from all around; below and above, not just before and behind. In Avanthal, the city proper is even surrounded by a giant glistening ice wall that the wild animals throw themselves against." She added, the story teller in her delighting in the attention and chance to share. However, in her zeal she had unintentionally spoken of Avanthal and was sure there would be many more questions to come.

"Have you been anywhere beyond Lhavit yourself?" She asked, eternally curious of what lay beyond the next rise.

"Oh? But she CAN learn then? How can one use magic to teach something inanimate to learn? Learning is such a complex action..." Unlike with Ayrui where it was a simple exchange of information among fellow mages, he was giving out such information to a stranger without knowing if she was a mage or just a normal person. Trying to get such negative thought out of the the way Kaik tried to think of the situation as a good thing, at least he could take a break from studying all the time.

“Well teaching something inanimate to learn is not as complex as you may think. I suppose an example would be...um...ah! imagine a set of blocks, if I were to give said object basic principles like reading or speech that would set the foundation of the blocks, in other words the intelligence of said object. The stronger intelligence means a stronger foundation. Based on the intelligence said object can build upon the blocks, using what is already known to help create new knowledge. In Arya’s case I am the one who is building the foundation while also helping her learn to build upon it. Sorry if that was….um confusing, I guess my teaching skills aren’t the best heh…” Kaik had hoped that strenuous speech about learning would occupy her mind for awhile, he was granted no such luck as Una continued on.

Una first began by asking if golems learned more like dogs or like children, then she further explained her question ending it softly about if they had souls. She stared at him waiting for an answer but he could not help but look away, it seemed rude but Kaik could not hide his timid nature. “Right...okay...hmm...depending on the Animator a object could very much mimik the intelligence of a normal person, if not surpass them, or the object could have the learning capacity of a dog it all depends on the skills of the Animator. I’ve heard of it being possible that is Golems wielding magic, in theory it would be possible though extremely difficult, everything has Djed flowing through it so yes such a thing should be possible. About the soul thing...yes they do have one...although it is one that is created.” “This women…she has a curiosity to rival a child! How much more must we talk about this subject?”

It seemed she had enough to satisfy her curiosity as she began to say how impressed she was even going to say that the whole city should run on them. While certainly an interesting viewpoint Kaik felt the need to bring her back to reality, “This is magic...of course there would be risks...to accomplish that dream of yours would require so much more!” Kaik looked down at Arya by his side as he thought about the possibility of Una’s dream, “Yes...I suppose you're right about them not needing food or rest...but I think the city running them is an...extremely unlikely thing...before at the clothing I uh...told you that I was happy right? That was because you didn’t act like most toward Arya...most would scream or start up an interrogation...to give life to the inanimate, some would say I’m playing god...Lhavit accepts the reality of magic...doesn’t mean they aren’t wary of its dangers. Beyond public opinion, it would require enormous amounts of material to create and maintain the dolls. Then there is the actual risk of doing Animation work...if there is a mistake in the Animation of the dolls things would go horribly wrong, it-...they might misinterpret what we ask of them, this would be made worse with even just one intelligent golem...killing a golem is different from killing a person, they feel no pain and will abide by what is taught till death...if said golem was made of metal or some similar material destroying them would be difficult.”
=====================

Somehow the conversation had been mostly about Kaik himself, which he still did not like. He was frankly amazed how Una was not so embarrassed about how obvious it was she was dominating the conversation. “Why can’t you just talk about yourself? I’d happily listen instead of talk!” In accordance to his thoughts he had tried to bring the conversation about Una and was delighted to have it work.

She first began with how she came to Lhavit by catching a ride with sailor, what Kaik found odd was why she would just suddenly felt the need to leave from what he had assumed to be her previous home, Wind Reach. Almost in sync with his thought she began talking about Wind Reach. He certainly was aware of the iconic Wind Eagles from there as well as their riders, though he was not sure what to think of them wanting to eat Una, “Sure she sorta looks like a- no no should not think like that!” He kept himself focused as she continued what was starting to become a story. He found it interesting to see how different it was in the world, in one place a whisper of magic and chaos ensues while in Lhavit it is a common topic. Her story now talked about the dangers outside of Lhavit, it seemed that it truly was a fearful place for it seemed creatures lurked even in the sky and sea. Apparently there even was city called Avanthal that had a giant ice wall to protect itself from such danger, “What kind of monster would require such an elaborate form of defense? Surely creating a stone wall would suffice...or is that truly not enough?”

He pondered the not so difficult question asked of him, it was true he never left Lhavit but he never really thought about leaving until the topic was brought up. It was obvious to himself why he could not leave but he could not share such information to a stranger still he had to answer her question, “No, I have never left the city...I suppose it may partly be because I was born here but…I- uh...have a dear friend here in the city, she and I made a promise that we’d stay by each other’s side, so I’ll probably stay here forever.” What he said was not too far from the truth, though it was far more difficult to keep himself from looking too sad. In an attempt to keep up his appearance he said, “It-...it’s a...nice out I suppose...really hungry for some food and tea.” He was not really hungry, the hunger had given way to thoughts of Ellen.

Sorry if that was….um confusing, I guess my teaching skills aren’t the best heh…” He explained as Una thought carefully over what he said.

But just because someone is given knowledge doesn't mean they can build on it...I suppose intelligence would allow someone to catalog information more readily but can they utilize it as creatively as humanoids? Perhaps it was the wrong question I asked.... Una thought but left the thought to listen to the answer from her second question. She didn't want to overwhelm him with questions, especially when he seems to uncertain himself.

“Right...okay...hmm...depending on the Animator a object could very much mimic the intelligence of a normal person, if not surpass them, or the object could have the learning capacity of a dog it all depends on the skills of the Animator. I’ve heard of it being possible that is Golems wielding magic, in theory it would be possible though extremely difficult, everything has Djed flowing through it so yes such a thing should be possible. About the soul thing...yes they do have one...although it is one that is created.” He explained, Una tilted her head. Everything had Djed? She had assumed only living things had Djed. Did that make this creature a living being...what level of cognitive ability did she have, could she be telling her master information he himself couldn't garner. She couldn't help but gaze at the child far more warily now.

I thought he had chosen a child as a form for something weaker than him to love but perhaps it is because people do not pay attention to children. She would be the perf- She cut herself off there, have I truly become so paranoid, being surrounded so by politics that I am frightened and wary of a little child. She scolded herself though her tentacles wiggled bunching at the nape of her neck despite herself.

“This is magic...of course there would be risks...to accomplish that dream of yours would require so much more!" Well of course it would... Una pondered, but it wasn't like Lhavit was the type of city to be stringent on the amount and type of magic used, practically the entire city worked on some sort of magic or another.

"Yes...I suppose you're right about them not needing food or rest...but I think the city running them is an...extremely unlikely thing...before at the clothing I uh...told you that I was happy right? That was because you didn’t act like most toward Arya...most would scream or start up an interrogation...to give life to the inanimate, some would say I’m playing god...Lhavit accepts the reality of magic...doesn’t mean they aren’t wary of its dangers." The next part of the explanation shocked Una. She had yet to see a Lhavitian show anything but admiration and a deep resonating love for magic. Besides, if the gods had created a magic to accomplish such things then surely they meant for it to be used?

"Beyond public opinion, it would require enormous amounts of material to create and maintain the dolls.

Una shook her head slowly, why not make the dolls from wood then so they could be more easily destroyed, it wasn't like there was a lack of trees in the wilderness beyond the city proper. They needn't be intelligent they simply needed to be able to form simple jobs such as copying, logging, mining, etc.. Certainly Una disagreed with his wariness having never seen the terrible dangers of magic herself but she didn't want to argue with the boy. He was after all quite young. Perhaps it is in his best interest to be afraid of so powerful a magic.

“What kind of monster would require such an elaborate form of defense? Surely creating a stone wall would suffice...or is that truly not enough?”

Thinking back to the tiny creatures that had flung themselves to their deaths at the walls Una shook her head. The only creature she had seen that posed any threat were the badgers but considering the size of the giant bears in Morwens army Una was sure there were far more dangerous things roaming the wilds.

"I imagine it is truly not enough. The dire polar bears that make up Morwens army are several thousand pounds. It would be a waste of food and space to care for creatures so large if there were not creatures equally as large to fear. The only I have ever seen are large Stoneback Badgers. They have glistening ice along their backs that they scratch at constantly and drive them into a vicious rage. I have seen a group of them threaten to take down a dire polar bear once...even if they were the only creatures on the tundra I certainly would build a wall around MY home..." She explained gnashing the air as she told the story and showing with her hands the length of the badgers fangs and claws.

“No, I have never left the city...I suppose it may partly be because I was born here but…I- uh...have a dear friend here in the city, she and I made a promise that we’d stay by each other’s side, so I’ll probably stay here forever.” Her next question was posed and answered in due time with an answer that made Una's eyes well as she thought of Cy.

"It is nice to have a friend to dedicate your life to...so long as you are both giving something up and both gaining something from the friendship..." She murmured quietly, she hated to sound so logical, emotion had its place in the world, a powerful place, "I was married once you know...and I dedicated my life to him, locking myself in a place for him. Like you." She smiled weakly. Wondering if she had over shared she chewed her lip self consciously, it had been a long time since she had related to anyone beyond romantically and sexually and this boy was just that, a boy.

[Surya Plaza] Lhavit's Desert Rose

Postby Kaik Leyr on August 24th, 2014, 6:23 pm

Kaik went to great lengths to answer every single question Una had asked so it irritated him that she chose not to say anything. By the end of it he had only gotten nods and shakes of her head, not a single a word uttered. He did not want to say anything about her sudden silence but it still annoyed him that he was only getting simple nods of the head so he addressed the issue anyway, “Um...what i-is your opinion? I don’t really...know what you’re thinking since you’re being quiet.”
================

As Una continued her story Kaik listened intently amazed at how horrible the places outside of Lhavit seemed. Talk of strange creatures he had never heard of fascinated him though he found Una’s story telling skills far more interesting. It seemed his trek outside his home was beginning to become not so pointless after all. “So you've been to Avanthal? What’s it like there?” he could not help but look out the window to compare the image of the city to the descriptions Una gave on the outside world.

He watched Una as she began to mutter quietly her own thoughts on the half truth he told. It seemed odd to Kaik how she seemed to think that something must be both lost and gained in a friendship. “Why must we lose something in order gain something in a friendship? It’s just...cruel...there’s nothing to lose or gain in a friendship...it just happens.” he thought feeling something was wrong as he noticed how sad she seemed. The next short words she spoke had begun to tore him up. It did not take much for him to realize what she was implying, the person she was married to had died. There was no way the man divorced her given how she said she had devoted herself to him. He wanted to believe that what she had said was the truth which meant he had lied to a woman who told him the truth.

What made him truly sorrowful was the false smile she wore, images of Ellen smiling even as she laid dead on her bed began to haunt him. He found himself staring at his ring, the only thing Ellen had left behind. “Stop it!...I hate that kind of smile...please just...sorry I- I...just don’t want to see such a horrible smile.” having realized he had raised his voice he tried to lower his voice.

“I-...I lied to you...that friend of mine…she was my lover, a silly thing to say since I was only perhaps sixteen at the time...I’m not really sure how old were were then...well she-...on a whim she had suddenly died from a disease...I promised to stay with her...I uh- I didn’t want to lie to you when you...told me about yourself,” Kaik tried to avoid Una’s gaze as he stared at his ring, “how is it? I mean...marriage...was it...nice?”

“Um...what i-is your opinion? I don’t really...know what you’re thinking since you’re being quiet.” What a tactful and subtle scolding, Una admired. Now used to the boys stuttering anxiety she deciphered what she interpreted as a gentle reminder, a conversation was not one sided.

"I think you underestimate how much of the city functions on magic. I work for the Councillor Radiant, Alses, of Magical Affairs and she overlooks practically every industry in Lhavit in some aspect or another. Certainly I think it would be worth the effort. Regarding the act of learning...I do not know much of the magic which you yield but it sounds to me like you create true life in which case, learning is a consequence of that I suppose. However, I don't see why people find someone like Arya so threatening...we accept that Ethaefal are superior to us and yet we expect them to treat us with respect due to any living creature. The same can be said true for...what was it you called her...a doll? A golem?...they are inferior but that does not mean they are not due respect." Una spoke slowly, speaking as she thought through the logic, "Though it is truly amazing that one can create life so flippantly...though Alses tells me we can kill with magic just as flippantly...so perhaps it is only ignorance that makes such amazing or frightening?" Una wasn't sure how she had wandered so far from the intended topic, but it was where her logic had taken her and she hoped Kaik wouldn't be disappointed by the response.

________________________________________________________

Una watched Kaik's eyes widen in horror at her story and hesitated. I am only emphasizing the horrible aspects of Avanthal and Wind Reach, She regretted, they are both as beautiful as they are dangerous.

“So you've been to Avanthal? What’s it like there?” He asked as he peered out the window making Una frown self consciously. Was he bored?

"Yes. Avanthal and Wind Reach are both very different from Lhavit but aspects of both, together make them not so dissimilar at all. Avanthal is flat and expansive, like snowy plains. But they have an ice-like material that appears very similar to Skyglass and is used in construction as it is used here. The people are far more friendly than those of Lhavit, and welcome foreigners as readily as their own kin. It is largely composed of the Vantha, a humanoid population with coloured hair and eyes that change colour with their emotions." Una spoke carefully, wondering how much the man knew of Avanthal already and beginning with the most basic aspects.

"It is overseen by the Goddess Morwen who marks each of her children against the debilitating cold of the north. The city is protected, as I said before by giant Kelvic polar bears ridden by the equivalent of the Shinya. They marry young and live in giant holds of combined families. They are a hard working people with incredible story telling capabilities." She explained decisively, sticking to fact instead of elaborations. A cultures mode of storytelling was as revealing as the truths of their existence but mixing the two was both exciting and misleading.

_________________________________________________________________

“Why must we lose something in order gain something in a friendship? It’s just...cruel...there’s nothing to lose or gain in a friendship...it just happens.”

"Well...as poetic as that sounds Kaik, it simply isn't true..." Una murmured sadly, "There is always something lost and gained in every interaction, especially those with increasing emotional or temporal investment...if one only gives or takes, it is not a very healthy relationship." She stated simply having realized how truly important it was to analyze one's relationships before and not after one was consumed by them.

“Stop it!...I hate that kind of smile...please just...sorry I- I...just don’t want to see such a horrible smile.” Instinctively Una covered the sharp teeth that had been revealed by her smile but quickly dropped her hand. There is no reason for me to feel ashamed of my anatomy because it is not like the majority. I am beautiful in my own way. Perhaps it is not the oddity of my teeth but that they are simply too carnivorous for him...

"I am a vegetarian...there is no need to be afraid of them." She explained peeling back her lips to expose her sharp teeth once again.

____________________________________________________

“I-...I lied to you...that friend of mine…she was my lover, a silly thing to say since I was only perhaps sixteen at the time...I’m not really sure how old were were then..." Unas eyes widened with surprise at his honestly and the tragedy weighing down his words.

"It is not silly, the value of love is not determined by age..." Una murmured, she herself had met Cy when she was but eighteen or nineteen, a few months after she had left home, "I met my own husband at a young age myself, perhaps youth even strengthens love as one is not yet as cynical as most adults appear to be..." She reasoned struggling not to alarm him with another smile.

"Well she-...on a whim she had suddenly died from a disease...I promised to stay with her...I uh- I didn’t want to lie to you when you...told me about yourself,” Fingering the ring anxiously Kaik didn't meet Unas gaze much to her own appreciation as tears began to form in the milky pink of her eyes. Brushing them away with an awkward finger Una smiled appreciatively at the waiter who had upon her outstretched arms two plates adorned with their food.

Nodding and a murmured thank you later before both of them rested teacups, teapots and a plethora of pungent hot food. Caressing the hot porcelain cup between her equally white fingers grateful to have something to do with her hands she glanced back at Kaik, regaining control of her composure.

“how is it? I mean...marriage...was it...nice?”

"Marriage is...brutal, enlightening, passionately painful and delightful. Definitely...both more and less than nice..." She murmured, their conversation devolving into whispers of painful honesty.

To his relief Una had begun to voice her thoughts on what he had stated before.

"I think you underestimate how much of the city functions on magic. I work for the Councillor Radiant, Alses, of Magical Affairs and she overlooks practically every industry in Lhavit in some aspect or another. Certainly I think it would be worth the effort.”

Alses? Councillor Radiant? Hmm would it truly be worth the effort? He kept his thoughts to himself, allowing Una to continue speaking.

When Una had questioned what made people find Arya so threatening he almost began to follow her logic as she used the Ethaefal as an example. Still he could see the most pivotal basis of what Una was saying, was he truly creating ‘real’ life? He waited until Una was finished before he spoke.

“Magic is definitely...destructive yet...brilliant...ignorance or not I-...in the end it still can kill just as easily as save a life,” he said not forgetting about her previous words, “What if...what if the lives I create are fake? There are dark things possible through...my magic...almost every Animator should know of the Nuit...the souls we create are not limited to just wooden dolls...from a sword to a rock...even a dead body...I- I just don’t know what is true life and what is not...I give life to things that-...weren’t meant to be given...life.”
-------------------------------------------

It was if Una was painting a picture right in front of him as she described the city of Avanthal and its denizens. He was fascinated by the Vantha as he had never heard of them before. What really drew him was how these people’s emotions were reflected by their eyes. Una then threaded onto a subject Kaik would have very gladly done without...religion. He grateful she did not go into the subject as she continued to talk of the Vantha’s life and characteristics. “The world is so different outside of Lhavit...so many things...I wonder what else is out there.”
----------------------------------------

Una spoke logically expanding on her point of something being lost and gained in every single interaction. It was sad for Kaik to have to hear her say such things so simply. He just could not believe in her words but he chose not say anything about, it was what she believed to be true Kaik could not change that. Thoughts of Ellen were inevitably as he began to put what Una said to his interactions to Ellen. What did I lose or gained from her? I gained nothing but happiness but what did I lose? Time? Time for what? To do as my parents ask? To just read? Was her death because there needed to be balance to what I gained? Petch that! No! There has to be more than simple gains and losses! Kaik was lost in his thoughts forgetting to say anything for a while.

Idiot...idiot! Another misunderstanding! I need to clear this up! As he was about to say something Una told him he had nothing to fear since she was a vegetarian. What followed was Kaik laughing oddly as she showed her sharp teeth. There was no real logic as to why he began to laugh, for some inexplicable reason he found it cute, funny, and ironic that her teeth were so sharp despite the fact she was a vegetarian. “N-no...I...heh...I...oh jeez...what was I going to sa- oh right…it’s just that I don’t like to see fake smiles...to smile when you’re sad...it…is sad to see people smile as they talk of painful things...even I begun to just smile when I’m sad...I just don’t understand it…”

So she found love at such a young age as well? How long has it been? I can’t even remember now. He said nothing else but the circumstances as to why Ellen was gone and his promise to her. The ring did not help to ease his anxiety as he paid no attention to what was going on around him.

There was nothing more to say as Una answered his question about marriage. He began to dream of what life would have been like if Ellen was still alive. He actually liked the thought of a bittersweet life of being husband to Ellen since he only wanted to be by her side, anything else that happened did not matter to him as long as he could see her. The smell of food and tea brought him back to reality. Very much needing a drink of tea his hands slowly grasp the cup and brings it to his mouth. He began to enjoy the dinner Una had offered him in hopes it would keep his mind off Ellen.

Comments
Nice conversation thread in which you got to learn of not one, not two, but three different races in Mizahar. Shame you only physically got to meet two of them though. Meanwhile, despite Kaik's apparent quiet demeanor, he might just turn out to be a champion conversationalist after all!

Note
Grade withheld for Nasira, Asha and Una Tanta due to extended inactivity. PM me for your grade if/when you return.

As always, PM if you have any questions or comments. Please remove your request from the grading thread.
