Additional Info: Raine was born more than a century ago, a human slave on the Radacke plantation. After his parents died of exposure during his teenage years, Raine became something of a 'hard case'. He was quite rebellious, even in light of the intense discipline he received at the hands of his overseers. He likely would have been done away with in short order had Carthrys Zulaca not taken an interest in him. The old Nuit purchased him from the Radacke's after hearing that they had a slave who they claimed was 'never gonna be broken'. Upon their first meeting, Carthrys saw the passion the boy had inside of him, the fire and rage that had been burning since the day his parents died.
Over the years, Zulaca worked with Raine, teaching him to channel the emotion inside of him to other pursuits, rather than letting it boil over into rebellion. Eventually this lead to his seeking to become a capable leader and savvy businessman so that he could help provide services and income for the Zulaca dynasty. As the years went on, his aggression lessened, and he turned himself to these clerical pursuits, learning to run The Dream and becoming a truly talented innkeeper. He had finally overcome the pain and anger which wracked every moment of his childhood, and the slave who 'couldn't be broken' no longer needed to be.
Nearly eighty years have passed since Carthrys Zulaca extended an invitation to Raine to not just be a friend and servant, but to join the ranks of the Zulaca dynasty as a true family member. He could not imagine the thought of turning down what he saw as the highest honor granted to a slave- the man who had saved him from ruin now invited him to be known as a son, as a brother. He gleefully accepted, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Raine is generally a cheerful fellow, making him quite pleasant to be around and adding to his natural ability to handle running The Dream. He has been known to regularly spend bells in conversation with residents, often joining them for meals or the occasional smoke or drink, wanting to be a pleasing host despite his status as a Nuit. He is especially friendly toward the slaves of The Royal, empathizing greatly with them, and harbors absolutely no patience with anyone who breaks the house rules on usage of personal slaves. It has often been said by those who have seen someone break these rules that the raging anger that used to dominate Raine really never disappeared, he just put it in reserve.
