In the docks, waiting beside one of the few ferries left on the water, waited an Acolyte. A slight woman, wearing all black with dark hair, she was lost within the shadows that the tall buildings cast over her. Her sour expression would be clear to any intelligent being to happen upon her that she was not best pleased where she was; she had other duties to attend to, and didn’t have the time to chase after the sub-human creatures which had broken out of their cages at the Kelvic Research Institute.

Evelyn Grey regretted ever suggesting the name of Ravok’s most infamous poison crafter, one Nolan Parnell, as she had referred to him. Though she was now aware of his true identity, that was the name under which she had originally met the man, and it was he who introduced to her the ‘Wildleash’ poison. It was a poison which, somehow, rendered a Kelvic human, making them incapable of shifting back into their kelvic form for a certain amount of time. It was for this reason that the poisoner’s name had fallen from her lips when she heard about the crisis at the KRI.

Her equals, superiors and inferiors had looked at her as if she had grown a second head; they were all aware of Parnell now, and she explained her reasoning for the man’s uses, at which point they had told her to lead the expedition to the Lakeshore. She had quickly informed the members of the Ebonstryfe with her, one Paladin*That’s you, Sevris!, and two soldiers, that, should Mister Parnell put the mission in danger, through any action or inaction, they were to put him down immediately. She didn’t tell them why – it was often easier to keep irrelevant information from them so as not to confuse them.

The poison crafter*Ino, in case you hadn’t guessed :P in question as now standing beside the Acolyte. Not out of necessity, though – Evelyn did not mind the man’s company, having found him sharp-witted and logical the last time they met. She did not trust him, following what she had discovered about his identity, but the woman did not trust anyone. He must have been released from the Black Hole for a reason, and she would view his assistance today as a chance for redemption.

"
I trust you brought a substantial portion of that delightful poison, Mister Parnell." She continued to refer to him by the name she had first received for sake of ease, and to remove confusion. "I can assure you that your stocks will be replenished, if all goes well today."

She glanced down the narrow alleyway waiting as, in dribs and drabs, the remaining members of their party arrived. Another member of the Ebonstyfe, a Mage whom she had also met, a Stryfe drop out and his Kelvic slave, which the Acolyte thought most interesting, if a little dangerous, and a Morpher.. these last three had been recommended, summoned, and were now arriving.

"
Welcome all, and thank you for your prompt arrival," she spoke loudly to the group, "I trust you were informed as to why you were all brought here. There had been an… incident at the Kelvic Research Institute, and you have all been asked to assist…" he cast her gaze over the only other female in the group, the Kelvic, "with returning the Kelvics to their cages and establishing order once again so that the handlers and researchers can continue their work. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them on the ferry, as we are short on time. But, for now, please…" She directed them all onto the ferry, and they were soon speeding through the water.

They'd let him keep the thing! It hung on a chain around his neck, 'The Pear of Anguish'. And he was proud of it, make no mistake. The pain of having an orifice stretched was perhaps the only thing worse than the humiliation of it. But he'd let neither of these aspects break him. Nor the burns, nor the strips of skin flayed from his upper arms. And that finger was one he could do without.

Inoadar had no idea how close he'd come to provoking Ematho into disregarding whatever order of restraint he'd been told to operate under, if any. But early on his "sessions", he'd perceived that there was to be no significant, permanent maiming. Thus, the surface agonies of flaying and burning, left, of course, to fester for increased sensitivity in the days that followed, were not going to pass into the realm of crippling. His value as a poisoncrafter was apparently still too great. And now he knew it!

Besides, infection was the torturer's friend, if handled properly. Let an abrasion sit a for a couple of days, and then take a rasp to it. Even the "beneficial" act of cleaning away the dying flesh was an excruciating ordeal. Inoadar now had a multitude of examples, if he chose to display them. But none were in evidence as he stood beside the Acolyte. His clothes covered the angry patches of tight new skin forming over the abrasions. And his walk was no longer clumsy as his backside returned to normal parameters. The only permanent souvenir was his own left little finger, now kept in a jar at his desk at the NMSS. He was willing to absorb a small bit of cost for the preservation solution. It was a trophy now.

He'd assumed that the Warden of The Black Hole had intended to take the right one as well. Inoadar had gone so far as to force a grim smirk, and ask, through his wracked vocal cords, if the Druvin was going to finish the job; that he was a man that appreciated symmetry. The inquisitor's glare was as much surprise as it was indignation. Inoadar had strongly suspected that his last bell of screaming had appeared genuine. His begging, and the manic alternating of laughing and shrieking, had been convincing enough that the Warden had done a double take upon his sudden calm delivery of such sarcasm, hoarse though his voice legitimately was.

His larynx may had been broken, but not his spirit. As long as he knew there was to be a future beyond the torment, that there must be a reason they did not shatter bones and slowly disembowel him, he could endure. He'd relived his glory days with the Second Edict. Now though, it was time to create some NEW glory days.

He turned to Acolyte Grey and nodded silently. He was honored that she called him by his assumed name. He had no doubt that his identity was now known to a much greater extent within the halls of power than prior to his arrest and torture. 'No...' he told himself, 'not torture...my 'test". He could not believe there would have been any reluctance to kill him if it had been a simple interrogation. Nonetheless, he had a sense that he was still on very unstable ground, that his "test" was not over.

But the fact the she called him by "Parnell" almost seemed a deference on her part. He had not asked for any thought of compensation for the use of his Wildleash. He hoped this also indicated a degree of new-found respect. The fiasco at the ruins last Spring had been averted from becoming a full-blown disaster. But he'd been as much a part of the destruction as the salvation, though he'd been possessed at the time. He could only assume this factor had been taken into account.

At any rate he now stood in her company watching the new arrivals. The Paladin was already there, of course. Inoadar had seen the sidelong glances he'd been sending his way; the kind that were devoid of welcome. This did not discourage him though. Why should a Paladin of the Ebonstryfe show favor to a newly released prisoner? It had probably become known that he had killed a soldier or two when he'd first arrived. He figured this man would be looking for any excuse to punish him for that. He hoped this mission would be his chance to make amends and gain respect among those ranks as well.

His optimism waned somewhat at the sight of the Kelvic, and the man with her. He knew them both, but was unsure of their attitude toward him. Their past connections were unclear, where amity was concerned. He was surprised that a Kelvic would have anything to do with such a mission as this anyway. Which, in turn, made him suspect that Caldera fellow she was with.

He was equally puzzled by the inclusion of the morpher, Daegron, a man he'd found to have some serious stability issues, of both the physical and mental variety. He wondered if he'd brought his own "Poke" this time.

But with the sight of Miro, his relief was palpable. Here, at least, was a friend. He was getting the feeling he was going to need one of those in this company.

Redd had only been told that morning by her master that they were heading towards the KRI, or as she had learned was, The Kelvic Research Institute. She had only heard about it once before when she was outside of Ravok's walls, but she didn't even really pay much attention. Why would she, she was mostly ignorant of civilization back then. It had now peeked her curiousity that they even did research on her kind, what kind of research would they even conduct?

The young wolf stood clothed in the usual outfit, a simple black shirt and pants, paired with a cloak and leaving her feet bare. She hadn't wanted to get her red scarf destroyed, so she had left it behind. It was the only gift she had received from anyone and she wanted to take great care of it. The half black sun tattoo was plain as day upon the back of her left hand, standing out against her pale skin. She also wore a leather collar around her neck, one she had grown used to wearing. Occasionally it agitated her, but not as often as it had once done.

While the people began to gather, she remained close by Elias's side, having been pre-warned earlier that should she dis-obey or fall out of line, punishment would be quick at hand. The word punishment, as she had learned, meant inflicted pain. She recognized only one other scent within the gathered people, other than her master's and that was the strange man that she kept running into.

Angling her head, she listened to the words being spoken. She had felt the eyes of the woman upon her the moment that she began to speak about the assistance of returning other kelvics to their cages to establish order amongst them. While it was no secret that Redd was a kelvic, she also felt no loyalty towards her own kind, why did she need them when she had her master?

It was only when they were all upon the ferry that her attention was turned to the pale man that she recognized from outside the walls of Ravok. Twice they had run into each other, one involving other wolves and the other encounter involving a symenestra. If she remembered correctly, she had left him unconscious behind surrounding shrubs and had covered him with a few leaves.

He seemed to have done alright and he didn't appear to be in as much pain as he used to be in. At least no scavenging parties or other predators hadn't gotten to him. She had felt slightly guilty leaving him there, but at the time she had other priorities which were of no concern to her now.

She glanced up at Elias, her gaze wondering if he would mind that she would say a simple hello to the man. While he hadn't exactly said that she couldn't talk to anyone, she wasn't exactly sure whether she should go against her better judgement of leaving his side and risk punishment. Instead, she decided upon not leaving her master's side, preferring to remain on his good side.

Instead, as she glanced back at the strange male, her gaze flickering over the man's figure for a moment. The dark hair and green eyes still the same as she remembered, just minus a few bandages. She managed a small smile in the direction of the male before glancing away, she didn't want people to think that she was staring to intimidate. Apparently people, especially humans, didn't like a watchful gaze, it could be considered rude or an intent to mean harm.

[Summer SQ] Captivity

Postby Sevris on June 20th, 2014, 6:39 pm

Probably one of the more powerful people besides the Acolyte leading them today, was Sevris Lazarin. The heir to Lazarin throne was there for many reasons.

His superiors had thought this attention be best left to the Acolyte and maybe a Commander to see to her whims. But Sevris had offered his services quickly.

They didn't object seeing as the matter would indefinitely be handled. However Sevris did not care about the escapees. But he was searching for them for himself. The Lazarin had many dark projects underway that would push himself into the limelight for power in the city.

Ravok was a beautiful city, but some of its inhabitants had a darker nature then most. Which was why Sevris was here in the first place. As usual he was clad in his glorious golden black armor. On his back was the harnessed golden serrated double-bladed sword. His golden mouth mask along with his special black and silver helmet gave him the most intimidating of poses.

He was also there to keep an eye on a Mister Nolan Parnell. Who if were to make any trouble would be immediately struck down by the Paladin. Sevris had no problem in killing someone and even relished the idea. However this one seemed oddly familiar to him. Many seasons ago he remembered the face but couldn't quite place it.

The Paladin shrugged and listened to the directive of Evelyn Grey. Her voice seemed dedicated to the cause of returning the Kelvics. They even had a Kelvic among them. Such useful creatures aren't they. He couldn't wait to get his hands on them.

After the Acolyte finished her briefing they were led to a ferry. He and his soldiers hopped on to began the hunt.

[Summer SQ] Captivity

Postby Daegron on June 23rd, 2014, 4:43 am

It felt good to be needed. It made his pride swell and grow.
The Black Sun's summons were unexpected to say the least. When the courier arrived, he was greeted with utmost suspicion. And who could blame Daegron for thinking that way ? His usual paranoia had grown after this season's adventures; They had almost taken his life and robbed him of another portion of sanity. He had made a promise to himself to never let himself be fooled again, and was planning to keep it. His impulsive side needed to be suppressed. Not his more instinctive actions, which seemed to get him out of trouble when in the thick of it, but his more random whims that had been proven to be disastrous. But when that black clad young lad, an initiate no less who took great pride on his "mission", presented him with the papers, he cast his doubts aside. It looked as official as it could be, and the seal he had just broken seemed original. No one was foolish enough to dare forge such a paper; it would mean a swift one-way trip to the Black Hole and torment better left untold. Rhysol's might was uncontested, his favoured dominated without dispute or sign of a flaw.

He'd just started feeling better, even the bruises and cuts that regularly adorned his rugged visage were starting to fade. He was even sober and in a good mood, a thing that was kind of rare these days. They'd caught him while studying the tomes he took from the ancient ruins last season, a task that had proven fruitless so far. Without much ado, he gathered whatever he thought would be needed and headed straight for the docks where he was supposed to meet the rest and be briefed. Of course, he left a bit of empty room in his pack for whatever he would "acquire". He did not forget his satchel of that precious "medicine" he'd grown a passion for. It might be needed. He left as quickly as possible; there was no time to tarry, and the matter was urgent. He had no details concerning his mission, but that wasn't really a problem. He trusted the powers that be and their almost flawless ways of execution. If they had deemed him worthy of joining another expedition and had need of his skills, he wasn't one to disagree or disbelieve. It was a bit of a surprise to be called again in the service of Rhysol, considering the events that took place in the Spring excursion. But then again, it hadn't gone that bad, and who was he to deny such honour and a chance for adventure?

It was a bell later that he arrived, just in time, at the designated place. He was to present himself to an Acolyte named Evelyn Grey and follow her orders. The armoured soldiers were visible from a distance, and so was the air of authority that the small-statured woman seemed to carry. She apparently was one of Rhysol's favoured. He greeted everyone with a slight bow and spoke with his usual raspy and low voice:

"Greetings, I'm Daegron. I'm ready to begin..." Gaining the Black Sun's or the Stryfe's approval was the smart thing to do, and he knew that he had to give his best self.

The golden armoured Paladin, Sevris Lazarin was his name as he remembered, was there too. He wasn't much of a talker, but he'd proven to be a companion that showed great determination and fortitude. It would be good to have his sword working on their side. This could get bloody.

Next to Evelyn, stood a man that Daegron had the discomfort of spending time with. His hand seemed to take a will of it's own and gently caressed the satchel containing the poisoner's personal recipe for ruin, hidden under his clothes. Nolan Parnell was a man of mystery, and someone who seemed to have a very broad set of skills and knowledges. Despite what had passed between them, The Morpher looked straight into his eyes. Whatever their relationship and mutual adventure was, he respected the man who had just grabbed a chance that happened to present to him. Daegron was used, that much was clear, but himself would do the same to anyone who had come to his door and ask for help. In a way, he was content to have Parnell on his side.

Elias Caldera was there too. He looked at the young mage, full of surprises he was, and nodded meaningfully. Their common business was far from over; there was a large issue unsettled, but the time was not right yet and they had taken a bit of a break from each other. There was no reason for everyone to know the details, and they'd better keep their mutual adventures secret, for now, lest they find themselves locked in a watery dungeon. They had been through hell and back, and it was clearly shown that they could make wonders in dire straits. Greatly incompatible with each other in every aspect, true enough, but still a very potent combination if worked properly.

On Elias' side stood a skinny and pale woman with a wild red mane. There was something feral about her that he could not quite place. It was a few moments later that he managed to spot the leather collar, bare feet and Black Sun tattoo on the back of her hand. A kelvic slave was to escort her master during that mission. The Morpher held no love for those creatures, but could not deny their usefulness.

The last one in that gathering was someone Daegron had never met before. There were so many things unusual or downright wrong about the red clad stranger that he didn't know where to begin. But he'd experienced first hand what Magic does to those who wield it, and how it shapes one's self so he sort of understood. There was a reason why that man was summoned, and the Morpher had no reason to think ill of him.

There was a quick briefing from the undisputed leader of this company. Apparently, those animals decided not to stay in their cages, and if outside help was sought, things might have gone pretty awry out there. He did not need more information, for now. Things would be apparent once they'd reach the KRI. He followed into the ferry, keeping his ken eye on his companions.

The Art will twist you and turn you.
It will break you and tear you asunder; from your scattered remains it will shape you.
It will engulf you and spit you out.
It will fester in your mind, disfigure your body and blacken your soul.
And so on and so forth, through an endless chain of transformations till the time comes and you are everything...
Then you'll truly be nothing...

[Summer SQ] Captivity

Postby Elias Caldera on June 23rd, 2014, 9:13 am

Amidst the devout and the conspiring, among poisoners and murderers, between slaves and soldiers... Elias felt himself precariously out of place. The summons had come as a slight surprise, one he had tasked his feverishly racing mind on deciphering the cause of the entire time he was given to prepare. He hadn't required long, a military sense of urgency sending his focus and body into an overdrive that had him ready and out the door almost as soon as the messenger had said his curt farewells. At first the young Ravokian had thought it a reward of recognition brought about by his profession. The reimancer had served the city with a fair amount of diligence in that regard if he did say so himself, and perhaps that truly was the reason. Then of course there was the work he had been doing along the shore and for the southern outpost as well. Admittedly, they could be construed as blatant attempts at gaining a small measure of prestige for himself, but acts that had originally and genuinely been born of a fervent desire to see his city bettered in any way conceivable. The possibility that perhaps Thadeus had recommended him for his selfless magecrafting briefly flashed by, but was quickly swatted away when Elias took the tick required to remember the man he was thinking of was the same blistering asshat of a paladin that despised Elias almost as much as Elias despised him. Maybe it was that official I sold the chaktawe too the fledgling hypnotist finally concluded. The Black Sun agent had seemed quite amiable during their bargaining, and considering how much of a petching robbery he had gotten away with when Elias had finally relented and handed the woman over for the pittance agreed upon, he had little right not to be. In hindsight, he did seem rather ecstatic about the whole concept of having the slaves he purchased and used being the ones to finally draw out the beast first. The Ravokian had naturally concluded their negotiations with a promise that should any more sufficiently capable slaves fall into his hands, he would immediately and happily send them to the acolyte to assist in the hunt. It could very well be possible the man remembered him for some reason or another.

In the end however, the ex apprentice had simply deemed that whatever the reason behind it, he was here now, smack dab in the middle of an opportunity to display his value and loyalty to those who truly mattered. It was a kind of test that left Elias brimming to capacity with equal parts excitement and dread. Mostly that had translated into a stoic, sterner master who had set about brooding and contemplating all manner of dark and ominous things while also taking the time to make it perfectly plain to his slave that should he find her even a hair out of line today, the punishment would be severe and brutally prompt. It wasn't that he didn't trust the kelvic to prove herself just as loyal and cunning as she always was, it was just that if he had said as much to himself, the person the words were truly intended for, it might have seemed a tad bit strange. In truth, Elias was more than confident that Redd's being here, at his side, would prove indispensable, especially now that he was surveying the small group that had been assembled. His eyes landed first and foremost upon the gleaming armor of their paladin escort. After the initial shock and awe of coming face to golden mask with the imposing man had worn off, an almost instantaneous layer of thick, palpable distaste settled over the young mage while he subtly scrutinized the warrior from the back of the shuffling procession. This wasn't the first servant of the ebonstryfe Elias had come across that clearly focused far too much time with how they were perceived above all else, and he doubted the golden paladin would be the last. Perhaps to a slack jawed, wide eyed petitioner the dark armor and duel headed weapon upon his back may have come off as impressive, but to Elias, it was shamelessly gaudy and tellingly pretentious. He knew right away he could expect either exceptionally little of worth from the man this day, or a great deal too much if the paladin was the kind to struggle with living up to the profound appearance he put on for the others around him. Needless to say, he kept such musing to adamantly to himself. No sense in pissing the heavily armed man off right out of the gates. In fact, he had bowed rather deeply and graciously to all the officials involved upon first arriving just to make that point.

It did dawn on him that he knew none of the other officials for that matter; not the Acolyte in charge, her two soldiers, nor the paladin. The only one he recognized was the undead wizard, Miro, and Elias was taking great pains to distance himself as much as he could from the magic wielding apprentice. It wasn't just because of the inherent respect and wariness mages were inclined to show one another if they expected to stay alive, but also because the steely faced nuit was more dangerous than most even understood, and that was even with the the horrific mask and dark aura that hung over his dessicated remains.

As for the others, Elias had been slightly startled and considerably dismayed to realize he knew them both quite well. There was Inoadar, the poison master, a despicably conniving man who seemed to embody all that made Ravok terrible and great with each plot or artfully deceptive syllable that slithered off his tongue. The two had run into one another on more than one occasion now, each time leaving Elias more and more wary of the venomous imposter who now owned the name of a man too important to the Caldera to simply ignore. Nolan seemed to recognize most everyone in the crowd as well, including Daegron. Elias and the morpher had met earlier in the summer, and their brief acquaintanceship had been an incredibly harrowing and dark one. He gave the zeltivan a curt nod of begrudging respect. The other man wasn't exactly a bad friend to have, nor a good one, he was just... dangerous, and worse yet, unpredictable. They were likely just that in the end though, friends that was, at least in some vague, morbid regards anyway. Elias may have made a point to separate himself from the stocky killer, but the two of them had shed blood together, earned scars together. That sort of the grisly work forged something between men, even strangers who didn't necessarily trust or like each other. The mage was compelled the shake the morpher's hand at first sight of him, a desperate ploy to show the everyone else he wasn't completely alone in this endeavor. Elias decided against it however, not entirely sure how to handle any of the odd and unnerving 'relationships' he shared with those now stalking down the plankways of the docks and unto the ferry. The young man would simply keep his head down for the time being, allowing the situation to dictate his reactions to both it and the people it involved, especially the ones in charge.

Elias was far from inexperienced when it came to being judged by those of great power and standing, he had done it for years without breaking a sweat for Rhysol's sake. Still, it had been a long time since he had ever found himself under the looking glass like he felt he was today. The trick, he'd found, was not letting them catch you screwing up or looking stupid. Almost as if on cue, an issue cropped up that threatened to demonstrate just those qualities. When time came to board the ferry that would transport the team to the shoreline, the reimancer hesitated. No one seemed all that concerned about getting unto the water at all, not even Redd, something which brought a flush of embarrassment upon her master. There was something beneath the placid waves of lake Ravok, that much was undeniable. It had rocked the city for the entire season now, and seemed no where close to ever calming down. But by Defiler, Elias swore he wasn't going to be the only one to show any inkling of fear for this damnable fish. Girding his loins, the young mage clambered aboard the vessel and took his seat with Redd placing herself dutifully next to him. She appeared to concentrate a great deal on the Parnell man, but Elias ignored her curiosity for the most part.

After a while of uncomfortable silence, Elias opted to -despite what he had only chimes ago determined not to do- ask a question. "Madam acolyte." He spoke, shifting the rucksack full of weapons he had brought along off his shoulder and down between his legs. "What are we to expect when we hit the shore?" Elias would have liked to better know the situation he was sailing head long into at the very least. Escaped kelvics was rather vague, and a bit troubling as well considering where they had come from. In all his time as an apprentice, not once had the Caldera, or any of his peers as far as he knew, ever been called to action out at the KRI. The guards and staff there were rather notorious for how strict and unwavering a leash they kept on their charges, turning the place into such a untouched mystery, it was more suited for horror stories and wives tales than an actual stop along a patrol's route. They had taken to calling it the zoo when the city's confounding affair with acronyms grew too tedious to bear.

Once he received an answer, or didn't, Elias would let the nervous quiet return for a while before he found it too much to bear again. Four hours of this was going to be excruciating. He leaned forward, eliciting Daegron's attention with a cocky smile on his face. "Five gold says I bag more kelvics than you, old man." He whispered, certain he was about to be five mizas richer by the end of the day.

The master apprentice was not surprised when news of the KRI breakout was brought to his attention. It seemed that one thing a person could count on in Ravok was a bit of chaos every now and then. Though it was always a pleasure to serve the Ebonstryfe in Rhysol's name. And that was what brought him to this small gathering to solve the city's problem. It was likely that a wizard would easily aid their efforts.

Miro saw some familiar faces in the gathering, but paid little attention for now. The only person that held his gaze currently was Nolan Parnell, who appeared in quite poor shape. Both master and Familiar gazed upon him in slight distress, the Reimancer at his side. Of the others, notable political figures, the Paladin Sevris and Acolyte Evalin Grey. It was a pleasure as well to see them here.

But it still bothered him to wonder what had happened to Nolan in the time they had been apart. The wizard closed his eyes and flared his Djed. His mind focused upon the man before him, his aura becoming attuned to Nolan's. The Aurist opened his eyes and gazed hard upon his friend's aura. Almost instantly he was struck by the condition of Nolan's body.

The burn of pain seered into the undead's mind as he gazed upon the damage done to the body. It caused Miro's own scars to burn on his body and for his mind to fill with horror. But he saw something else as well, a feeling of confidence. A feeling of pride and strength. Miro believed that Nolan could endure all but death and emerge stronger.

A smirk crossed the Chained One's face as he released his focus on the man's aura. Perhaps Nolan could emerge from death even stronger. There were many perks to being a Nuit. However, as for the group, it seemed it was time for them to go. Yes, it would be a while on the ferry, but a good chance to prepare for what came next.

The wizard brought with him his staff, his blade and a bag packed with a large scroll. With the assistance of Ionu's Light as a crutch he kept pace with Nolan and stay close to him. It would be nice to pass a bit of time catching up with him. It seemed he had a story to tell. As for their mission, it was quite clear what had to be done.

With Sevris and Lady Grey here, it was only a matter of following orders well. To be able to work with Nolan was its own perk, and of course there were other members of their party. There was plenty of time ahead of them, for now Miro would remain silent until addressed. Without doubt there would be reward for a good performance.

The journey to the lakeshore, where the Kelvic Research Institute sat on a small peninsula-like patch of land, was a long one. To the acolyte, it felt longer than any journey she had had to the shore, as in this particular instance, time really was of the essence. A slow arrival could cost the lives of the valuable Kelvics kept at the research facility, or worse, the lives of the handlers and researchers there. Most of the journey she spent in silence as the ferry seemed to slip through the water at an unusually slow pace, squinting her eyes and scanning for the shoreline.

At one point, she was approached by the Ebonstryfe drop-out, a boy who had only recently returned to the city, if she recalled the information correctly. But he had skills, and would no doubt be useful. It was his Kelvic she was worried about. In answering his question, she spoke loudly enough so that the rest of the occupants of the boat would also be able to hear what was being said - even though they hadn't asked, they had the right to the information, if only to help in ensuring a successful operation. "
The message had said that many of the staff of the Kelvic Research Institute had made it out of the facility and sealed all of the Kelvics inside. They do not believe that any have managed to escape."

She turned to look at the members of the party heading out to the lakeshore, "
With us, as I hope most of you are aware, is a poison crafter. He will be supplying a poison called Wildleash to us, which acts as a suppressant to whatever gene causes the Kelvics to shift into their animal form. For the larger animals and predators, this will be particularly useful. I believe there is also a stock of the poison somewhere in the facility, though I don't know if any will be waiting for us on the outside when we arrive."

The Acolyte hesitated before going on; Ravokians, as a general rule, believed all other races to be beneath them, including Kelvics. Anything sub-human's life did not have the same value as a human's, which meant that, if she wasn't careful, the Facility would stop the riot, but only at the cost of dead Kelvics. "
Where at all possible, you are to subdue the Kelvics, not kill them. They are valuable to the research of the facility, and are not, for the most part, expendable, as you might think."

Four long bells passed before they finally reached the lakeshore, where they were greeted by the Head Researcher of the facility, Amanda Nitrozian and a few handlers. "
Acolyte Grey, Paladin, thank you for coming," she spoke to the highest ranked members of the party, before turning to the rest, "And to all of you, your presence is greatly appreciated."

The woman turned to the handlers behind her, who were each holding small lengths of leather, all of which varied in size. The handlers stepped forward and began to hand out a number of these strips to each of the members of the group. "
You are each being given a number of leather collars, which you are to fit around the necks of any Kelvic you encounter, in order to stop them from shifting. The largest size is designed for humans, where there animal form is bigger than their human one. The rest fit around individual species of the animal forms."

It crossed the woman's mind to request that they did not try to strangle the creatures' necks with the collars, or place one one which was too large, but she valued the opinions of the Black Sun, and decided that each man present was intelligent enough to work with others to ensure the Kelvics were subdued and mostly unharmed. "
I should warn you that the Kelvics are ravenous, angry and out for blood. We have many predators, too many for my handlers to... handle. I don't doubt that you have been chosen because of your strengths... do you have any questions?"

Inoadar stepped forward, with an aside to the Acolyte, "Forgive me, Acolyte Grey, but I can probably answer some of the questions they man have first." he faced the group. "I have sixty doses of 'Wildleash', twenty of which are in dart form. You do not have to have a blowgun to use them in this way, though I will be." He did not bother holding up the cane-style blowgun he was known to employ. "Simply jabbing the thing wherever there is exposed skin, or hide, will do the trick. It will cause them to morph uncontrollably for a chime or two, fall unconscious for another, and then to grow passive for a full bell or more, after that."

He wanted to add that he would have had more, but a vial of acid slipped from his grip the day before and ruined his last batch. He wanted to emphasize that it was due to having had the little finger, and the tip of his ring finger, on his left hand, cut off while being interrogated. Discretion raised its wiser head, however, and stifled this complaint. He went on, "An important detail is that this compound will always leave them in human form while they are affected, so leashes will not be of any use on those with an animal form possessing a narrower neck than a human. But the passivity will make them docile enough to be led back to their cage without a struggle."

He didn't know how many actual subjects there were in the facility at any given time, so he did not know if sixty doses would be enough, but they would make do. He had no doubt that the unrestrained killing of one or two would go a long way toward demoralizing others near enough to witness it. Those that became enraged and vengeful would serve as the next object lessons. "Wildleash' can also be simply smeared on the edges of blades, or even wiped by hand into preexisting wounds. So I have enough for each of us to take ten."

His equation took the Acolyte into account, but not the Kelvic, Redd, whom he figured was not an entirely trusted member of the group. He also considered that the mages might not feel such an inclination to use a poison, where their unique skills may be even more effective. He could only hope they could find ways to make them less lethal and more...ensnaring.

As a last point, he added, "Wildleash' lasts longer when kept cold, so any supply on the grounds will probably be kept in some cold storage. It's likely the Kelvics are aware of it and may have destroyed it, or intend to use it as a decoy, or bait for a trap. However, IF we find it, it will need to be warmed back up to syrupy consistency before being much use."

He then stepped back, waiting to see what questions the others would have, and which of them would ask for doses of the poison.

I would prefer you called me "Nolan Parnell"...In fact, I insist.

Miro listened carefully to all that Lady Grey spoke of, obviously important for all participants. Yes, very important, as it gave a great deal of insight. At the mention of the Kelvics being trapped inside, a brief cackle broke the undead's repose. It seemed they had their work cut out for them. And perhaps this was one of the few instances were Nolan was far more beneficial to an effort than the wizard. But, as always, both were highly capable.

Of course, as expected, the targets were to be subdued, which was perfectly fine. Leeching, Hypnotism, Reimancy, they provided plenty of non-lethal techniques. Capturing a prey alive was something well trained since arrival in Ravok. Of course, apart from Nolan and Miro, it was likely the party was not equipped for such an endeavor. They were however walking sacks of Djed. Which were the most savory of meals was unknown, as they were scattered, out of the reach of Auristics. It mattered little anyways.

The question that did linger in the Chained One's mind was how many creatures did they stand against? How many vicious predators were on the hunt, unable to sate their hatred against the handlers? Maybe a few dozen, fifty, even a hundred? Perhaps even more than that, but surely not all of them of a dangerous breed. But without doubt there remained those of an especially dangerous form. It was enough to send a tinge of excitement through the body to just think about.

Yes, the cravings had started, but they would not hinder him here. They could only push things forth, a guide toward power. How grand it would be to come away with the prize of a most dangerous beast. It was enough to cause Miro's hand to tremble. Ender however was not nearly as excited, even a bit sympathetic for their targets. It was pathetic, but that was just how the creature was. Where he had learned such a thing was beyond his master however.

In time the group arrived at their destination however, and still Miro held his veil of mysterious silence. The local was not entirely unfamiliar, but hardly well known. The person they met, she was a bit more mysterious than the location even. Likely an important figure here, she received the group with an explanation. However as collars were handed out, the undead hadn't a hand to accept any and merely shook his head. Somebody else could make use of them instead.

But there wasn't really anything all that useful told to them by this woman. Admittedly it made the wizard a bit jealous to see Sevris and Evelyn greeted as such, while the Master Apprentice was ignored. Perhaps Nolan felt somewhat the same, never being fully appreciated. Though still it was hard to shrug the question of what had happened to the man. It had been a while, sure, but there seemed to be more than a little to catch up on.

The poisoner stepped forward and began to speak to the group. It seemed he would have something useful to say, unlike most of the others so far. Poison, Kelvic restraining, blowgun, all of it quite interesting, but none of it all that applicable to Miro. Poison was not his style, but definitely it could make up for the party members with naught else to contribute. It caused a smirk to form upon the dead one's lips.

Ah, yes, the others in the group. Sevris could fight at least, the Acolyte could lead, and the others, well, they had to have their own merits. But how many of them could restrain a wild predator on their own without killing it or being killed? The men might be able to survive a lesser predator or so, but there was doubt about the capabilities of the woman. But they would not be of waste, no matter how unfit for this they were.

The Reimancer mused to himself of their true use. They would be able to see that the work done by the wizard and poisoner was not put to waste. To take doses of the poison and see them applies, put the iron and leather collars upon the restrained Kelvics. Or maybe even to serve as bait. If nothing else, they had enough Djed within them to fuel at least one good spell. Perhaps now was a good time to break the long-held silence.

Miro cleared his throat to shift attention from Nolan to him. As well he stepped forward to yet again stand beside his ally, not quite sure what to say to these people. He would just make an announcement for now. "I will not be using any poison nor any leashes. I haven't the hands for such thing, nor do I have the tolerance for the burden of such hindrances to be placed on me. But you need not worry. I am quite prepared by my own means, though I am likewise limited in my reserves."

It was a fine announcement, although quite brash. This was not normally the Chained One's style, but he did feel quite confident in this. He felt assured in his success, and everybody else would know it. That way they could be prepared for his displays. Although, again, thoughts drifted to Nolan. They had been through so much, and now it was hard not to worry of his well-being. Such a valuable asset, it would be a shame if anything happened to him. An idea came to mind.

Just as in previous dangerous encounters, perhaps the wizard's Familiar could be passed off as a means of protection. That thought triggered another thought, the danger they would be encountering. It was safe to assume that all Kelvics still alive were released by now. Again Miro raised his voice, but this time addressed the woman of the Institute that had received them. Whether or not she could answer these inquiries was debatable, but easily tested now.

The former cocksure tone was replaced by one much more modest. "Though I do have a few questions, if you do not mind. I wonder of the Kelvics inside. Their numbers, the dangerous breed and as well if they have access to weapons. Not only that, but of the facility. There must be advantages given to them having it under their control. Do any pose serious risk to us?" These were the main things that begged to be answered, but there was more.

Without giving time for a reply, more questions were sent in request of an answer. "That is not my only concern however. The researchers themselves, although in need of saving, they are a liability. There will be no easy way to identify them with certainty, if the creatures assume a human guise. Needless to say, they can not be trusted. Not unless properly identified. Though the poison should have little effect on a human, I assume."

The last bit was not quite a question, but it needed to be said regardless. He would concluded his inquiries with this. "I do know what we are to expect inside, but not the conditions in which we will face them. Any information regarding the Kelvics, building and handlers would be of great assistance." A moment of hesitation was held before he asked the final question. His grey eyes locked onto the researcher's. "I doubt any are more capable of assisting us with our lack of knowledge than you are. Might you, such an invaluable asset, be joining us?"

A wide grin formed beneath the Mask of Many, cut off from sight of the others. Unlike many of the others, this woman had previous experience here, and that was useful. And now the undead could resolve his lingering concern of Nolan. He shook his wrist, a sign to his partner, and issued a telepathic message. "Ender, protect Nolan. I worry for him." And the Irylid knew just what to do. He started by shifting forms. The silvery bracelet upon the wizard broke away to change into an entirely different form.

Ender began to hover in the air and grow, form a highly reflective orb. The total size of his newly assumed form was of about two feet in diameter, his preferred restrained size. And in his natural form he felt a great deal of freedom, but would gladly trade it away for Nolan's sake. By now he was quite fond of the man, having a deeper respect for him than most any other Human. Perhaps this mission would not be a chance to impress him.

The Familiar knew better than to distract or interrupt the important happenings of the mission, so instead he only waited by Nolan's side. Nolan's right side, down near his hand, as a hint. It would not be the first time the two had worked together, nor the first time the Irylid sealed himself upon the man. But permission was always requested first. When an appropriate time presented itself Ender would ask,
"Nolan, my I seal myself upon your wrist? I would quite enjoy working as your partner."
