Eldon was not one to appreciate Kayiri barking orders at him. Perhaps he should have thought a little better of it, since he wasn't exactly singled out in the orders like he felt, but the thought of this guy, who was quite a bit younger than Eldon, had yet to hold any significant amount of respect from the Water Reimancer, and without acceptance from the team as a whole stepped up to the plate and make himself leader. Eldon wasn't a fan of that, yet he was pleased to know the boy had the courage to do so. It wasn't easy to assume a leadership position. Eldon didn't know this personally, but he knew he wasn't built for that sort of thing. He had other plans for himself.
So, without so much as a scowl, or nod of approval for that matter, Eldon moved next to Vanator, giving him several paces so that he could do whatever he was doing (Eldon didn't understand the Webbing too well, merely the basics were understood) and he scanned the horizon. "Understood." Eldon glanced at Sam, noticing that he had been watching Vanator, staring at him as if studying his statue-like stillness. Sunkiss grinned lightly.
"What are you thinking about brother?"
A few moments passed as Sam mentioned a Hunting Leader. It made sense, perfect sense. If something went astray out here on the Sea of Grass (which wasn't unlikely), it was wise to have one voice to listen to, rather than half a dozen suggestions pointing in opposite directions. The question was 'Who was the best candidate?' Eldon glanced from person to person. Dymphna, and in no disrespect, was probably the last choice of all to be considered for the role. She was visibly afraid which would merely demoralize them in a time when morale was needed most, plus she didn't seem to be a warrior or hunter, a healer (as Kayiri mentioned) was substantially useful, but not as a leader. Kayiri was young, rash, quick to talk, quick to act, but Eldon couldn't think that he was thinking everything through. A mistake was common, they were all human, but a mistake made by a leader would spell catastrophe, followed shortly by no survivors.
Vanator, Eldon had to say, seemed to be the best choice in his eyes. Eldon may not have known too much of him, but he could tell he was experienced. Eldon could see he knew Webbing, which was incredibly useful in these lands. Eldon had yet to find any fault or questionable traits in this man, yet he didn't know him well enough to put so much faith in. Then there was himself, a thought that merely brought a smirk to his face. That was a 'No'. He could throw an ax and thrust a spear and ride a horse, but he was quick to act, easy to anger, and would likely be the second worst possible choice available (the first only being Dymphna, again because she seemed more fragile than firm).
"I'm with Sam and Dymphna. Actually, we probably should have done this sooner." Eldon looked at Sam, waiting for him to look directly at him so he could peer into his cousin's eyes. He had to see the confidence radiating from Sama'el gaze before he made his choice. Eldon loved his cousin with all his heart, but during a hunt you could not put favoritism in anyone but the one best suited for the job.
'Tell me Sam, are you willing to take up that responsibility?' |
