Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Jaye wandered through her garden with a smile. With her leg as damaged as it was she had had plenty of time to sit on her butt weeding and tending the area. Though she had little knowledge or interest in the area it was an obligation of her purchase and with so many other cottages looking so well kept she felt a touch of shame for the neglect hers had seen from its previous owner. Besides...the birds loved the thick and pungent flowers that blossomed further as competing weeds were removed.

The Kendoka Sasaran lay directly across the stone street from her own residence. She had spent much time analyzing the map given to her upon entering Riverfall during her days of bed rest and since then had often gone to it watching enviously as the Akalak trained. The Akalak were bastions of strength and vigour, warriors beyond imagine and as Jaye gazed upon their ranks she felt the familiar tug in her abdomen that she felt whenever she saw Atoll. It was an unfamiliar but pleasant tingle that ran through her spine and the inside of her thighs.

This time, however, she would finally step foot within the cavernous training area. Black brown beams stretched over the top of the structure while pale wood creeped along the floor. Cleaned thoroughly at the beginning and end of everyday dust never had the chance the collect in anything but the narrowest of corners.

The head of the studio roamed the floor as he always did. Overwhelmingly tall Mizra is a king among the Akalak, a beast of men and as he approached Jaye a smile upon his face she cannot help but blush as she returns it.

"You have your spear today. I take it you plan to do more than observe this time?"

Jaye grinned a reply, "Yes, finally." Her response received an amused chortle as Mizra glanced about the studio again before returning his attention to her.

"So, I assume you would like to learn more about your companion?" He nodded at her spear. His language made her smile to herself. She was surprised by how much in Riverfall reminded her of her father, just as this mans relation of weapon to human did.

"Yes. My heel, it's healed enough for me to do a light work out. I know a little about throwing a spear but with the lunge it requires...I can't do it with my leg as it is. So I would like to learn how to fight with it by hand."

He nodded and gestured at a relatively young pale purple Akalak, "Sohryn, is the spear instructor, among other weapons. You may join his group on the far side. Since you will just be doing basic stretching and holding and of the pole arm students should be able to help you with the basics." He explained nodding in the direction in which she should trod.

"Thank you," Jaye replied as she skirted the outside of the training area careful to warn away approaching trainees, "Behind. Behind. Behind." She chanted quietly when any approached her careful passage, as several students backed away from an approaching opponent.

A small group of students with javelins, staffs, and spears among other long arms were warming up for the day several stretching and doing gentle maneuvers with their chosen weapon.

A slightly fainter purple hued student stood aside from the others without a partner. Hair dark and curling about near his jaw Jaye tilted her head as she approached and extended a hand, "Jaye." She introduced without preamble, "I haven't trained here before, they instructed me to find a partner to gently warm up with and learn basic handling?" She explained briefly.

This wasn't a social call, or a chance to get to know one another. She was here to exercise, to stretch long unused muscles. Her right leg was still wrapped though the cast had been removed and even as she walked she felt the muscle tense, shortened from lack of use.

Battling Bandages [Ashar]

Ashar
46th of Summer, 514AV
The Kendoka Sasaran

Ashar's brow was creased into a frown of concentration, covered in a gentle glimmer of perspiration. Each breath was deep and moderately paced, punctuated by the occasional sharp intake of breath or gasp as he moved to the side of an incoming attack or made a counter-offensive. For more than twenty years straight he'd been doing this, and he'd been doing it for the next two hundred if all went well.

A spear thrust came at him, aiming right for his abdomen, its blunt wooden tip seeking the space between his ribs. Being struck there would empty his lungs, rendering him incapable of reacted for a bit and probably making him double over. So Ashar, in the time it took for his opponent to ready an adequate lunge, twisted to the side and just out of its path. It was too close for his comfort, but even a close save was a save in combat. While Ashar regained his balance from the violent dodge, his opponent withdrew the spear and thrust it forward again, aiming for the same spot. This time Ashar used the staff of his naginata to knock the spear off its intended path, continuing the twirl and bringing the wooden blade soaring up toward his opponent's head.

The blue Akalak arched backwards to avoid getting hit, putting one of his feet back to brace himself. However, even though he'd managed to avoid the attack without repercussion, his spear wasn't good at close encounters such as this, leaving him wide open to Ashar's second attack.

It ended with a great loud clack, as Ashar's wooden naginata blade made contact with the blue Akalak's spear. The weapon was brought back and up in time to use the butt of the spear to block the incoming attack, but the spearhead was facing down and in no position to be brought to bear quickly. Both combatants stopped the fight, deciding to leave it as is, but if it were to continue there was no doubt who would have the upper hand.

Both Akalaks smiled at each other, wiping their brows and bowing slightly to acknowledge the other's prowess.

"Not bad for a young volunteer such as yourself," Ashar praised smilingly. "You have another few years until your Rite of Passage, correct? Keep training this hard, and I've no doubt you'll make an Infantry Kavran by then. I wish I could help, but I'm not a spearman or a teacher, so you'd find me quite useless. Anyway, best of luck to you."

The blue Akalak smiled in return and bowed once more a gentle chest dip before rolling his shoulders and walking off toward the edge of the Sasaran, eager for a break. Ashar didn't know the young Akalak's name, but he could see the same wild eagerness in every fiber of his blue body that Ashar himself shared. It wasn't every day he was actually able to be the one to offer advice, rather than receive it as he usually did, so today was a day he found rather refreshing.

You're reminiscing like an old man, Jek teased, unable to refrain from doing so. Don't forget you yourself have yet to fulfill your Rite yourself.

I'm closer to it than he is, Ashar pointed out, taking the tease in remarkably good humor. I'd have thought you'd be sound asleep by now. You're not usually paying attention to when I'm training, saying something along the lines of how I'll always be the fighter between the two of us?

Doesn't mean I shouldn't know how to fight, Jek retorted. Just because I'm not saying anything doesn't mean I'm dozing off. There might come a time when you're incapacitated or fatigued for some reason, and I may need to protect us. Ashar snickered, and Jek grumbled in response. The point is knowing how to fight definitely won't hurt.

Yes, that is true. Maybe you should come out and fight sometime. Grumbling again, Jek refused to reply to that, prompting a chuckle from Ashar as he turned around.

"Jaye," said a woman, offering her hand. "I haven't trained here before, they instructed me to find a partner to gently warm up with and learn basic handling?"

Ashar blinked once in surprise, not expecting the sudden introduction. Most people didn't even offer a name - most recently the volunteer Kavran just now - before asking to spar. This was a place where the Akalaks went to train and excel at sparring, not introduce themselves. Introductions, if they happened at all, occurred usually after the two combatants were finished, after seeing how the other sized up and if it'd work well to continue sparring. At least, that was Ashar's experience. Perhaps this woman was used to different traditions wherever she was from.

That was the other thing. It wasn't really that women shouldn't be fighting, Ashar was simply surprised to find one in the Kendoka of all places. It was traditionally for Akalaks, sponsored by the Council, though it was true that it was open to all residents both temporary and long-term. Still, it took Ashar a moment before he was able to respond.

This is the point in the story where the mysterious woman asking to train dropkicks you and presses her weapon down on your throat. If there's one thing mother's books have taught us, it's that we should never underestimate a stranger.

Chuckling, Ashar shook his head. Yeah, I remember that, he told his dark brother. She's got bandages though on her leg, see? I bet a dropkick would hurt her more than it would hurt me.

Yeah, yeah. Hey, she's waiting for an answer, you know.

"Ashar," he said, in Common this time. He took a few steps back, bowing as he did to the Kavran, then took in a nice balanced stance with equal weight on each foot. His hands were shoulder-width apart on the staff of his naginata, ready to be used to block defensively or twirly offensively depending on the woman's reaction. "I do not teach, so I can't help. But I can warm you up for sure."
Ashar is being renovated. Be patient!

"Do not try to fight yourself. Such is the road to chaos."
