Day 9 - July 19th, 2014

Her brown hues stared back at her as they peered into the surface of the water that was currently held in a small little bowl, a bowl of which she was supposed to wash her hands in as she begun to get ready for the ceremony that was to take place just before the sun set over the horizon. This particular ceremony had been arranged many moons ago and the young woman had known about it, however dread had settled within her stomach as the rival tribe had arrived the night before. Their fires were shared and so was the food and drink as they celebrated in their new arrangement. Her gaze had settled upon the large toned man who wore only a pair of pants, his large muscles clear to all who viewed him. His black mane, framed his face as those green eyes seemed to bore into her as he sat across from her at the fire. He was silent and didn't partake in much of the activities or talk, in fact, neither did she. For this ceremony was a wedding and that man and she would be married under the setting set for all the spirits of the land to see.

A sigh graced her lips as she adjusted her white dress and slipped on her mother's white shelled necklace around her slim neck. It was old and had been passed down for many generations within the family, it had been passed on to her now, as it was her wedding day. It was thought that the necklace itself helped with the conceiving of a child when the two were expected to consummate their marriage that night as they lay in the same tent. Gently her fingers stroked the eagle feathers of the headdress that she was expected to wear. She did not want to have to go through with this wedding but if she didn't, her people would be constantly suffering at the hands of the rival tribe and so, the only way to break a truce with them, was to combine their blood and she closed those muddy pools of hers as she tried to gather herself together. Even if she had outright refused, her father, the leader of their tribe would drag her out and force her to marry the man. Either she did it willing or not was up to her and she wanted to keep some kind of dignity about her if she wanted to show a brave face to all present. Slowly, she lifted the headdress up to place upon her head, her brown locks flowing down her back unhindered and she turned to the flap of the tent. It was now or never, she told herself and walked out of the tent to face her fated path.

Vroom vroom!

Not really, more like steady Whaaaam!

Rubber tires, uneven bumpy roads.

MOAN!

Silence.

Grumble, Zach says as he holds the steering wheel.

He'd been the only one awake for hours.

Long drives, the worst ever.

EVER!

MOAN!

Silence, nobody wakes.

Zach continues to steer the car, tempted to drive off the road, into a ditch.

It was too cloudy, much too sleepy to drive.

But it was Zach's turn.

Clouds part.

Sun shines, kind of.

"Guys look!"

Silence, Zach sees a rainbow!

It looked like a...

"Double Rainbow!"

Everyone wakes up, groggy, sleepy, unawares.

Zach distracted by the beauty.

Hits an oncoming semi-truck.

Day 10, July 20th, 2014

The rain had been relentless as it fell upon the dry land. She had been travelling along the road when the storm hit, but she wouldn't slow down, not for this rain, for she had business to attend to in the west. It had rained for quite some time and water had gushed over the bitumen before the water rushed onto the side of the road. Her windscreen wipers had furiously brushed aside the rain that had fallen onto her windscreen. The rained bothered her some-what, as it reminded her of her father's funeral, the one that she was currently running away from to bury herself in work. It was her life blood, her sanity as the only living parent that she had, passed away. Furiously, she wiped at the tears that stained her now pale cheeks, before she placed both hands upon the wheel, she had to pay attention, otherwise, the wheels of her car might loose traction and throw her off the road. While she wasn't sure whether she would make it through this grieving patch, she had to keep pushing on, it was what her father would have wanted and she had to try and make things alright without him. She just felt bad that she didn't get to be with him before he died, to hold his hand and tell him that she loved him, as he struggled to stay alive after the drunk driver had hit him. It just wasn't fair, because the drunk driver had survived.

It was then that she began to notice that the rain was beginning to lighten up and she twisted the little stick beside her steering wheel to slow the windscreen wipers, the path ahead became much more clear. She wasn't one to believe such things when people told her that the storm would clear, but the storm that had surrounded her did begin to clear. She continued to drive, but she was able to turn her windscreen wipers off as the sun slowly began to come out, even though it was late in the afternoon. She looked around at the empty paddocks that were fenced off beside the road and smiled to herself, well at least something would grow from the rain that they had and she wound down her window as that lovely fresh scent of rain hit her. It was then that she saw the rainbow and she couldn't help but smile, perhaps he already knew that she loved her and maybe, he had forgiven the fact that she couldn't be there beside him before he passed. Her gaze drifted to view the paddocks that were bare but was wet with fresh rain. Although having been eaten by the livestock, the rain would surely have helped the grass to grow back, so maybe... Although her father passed away, maybe she would recover as well. As she came to this conclusion, a smile slipped onto her lips, as she finally knew that she would be alright.

Your Daily Prompts

Postby Braeth Frostfawn on July 22nd, 2014, 1:58 pm

In the beginning, there was nothing, except universe. Universe, in all its power, looks at all the nothing and pondered. Everything was alright in this vast void, this tapestry of nothing, but "alright" didn't feel like "enough". In all this nothing, there was actually one thing, potential. So, the universe created two beings of opposites, light and dark. Please with what it had done, the universe took a rest, leaving existence in the capable hands of these two beings, light and dark.

But light and dark did not agree well. Each wanted to make everything into something beautiful, but each wanted to make something more beautiful than the other. The spirit of competition had been unintentionally manifested.

The light, to show it was superior, created the sun in the sky. The sun was bright, warm, large, powerful, giving off such wonderful radiance. The light was pleased.

The dark then peered out. It created the moon and the stars, all the things that dominated the sky when the sun went to rest its weary head. The sparkling heavens, the shifting moon. The dark was pleased.

The light responded by creating the planets that would circle the sun in such a mechanical pattern. The dark then made planet earth, with all its mountains and trees. The light looked to earth and gave it water and fire. The dark gave it birds and fish and all manner of life. The competition seemed like it would never cease.

However, the universe woke from its slumber to see all that was around. The light and dark had not noticed, but everything they made, was dying. "Light! Dark! What have you done! All these things you have made are dying!" The universe spoke. "You have created out of hatred for each other! You must create out of love for your creation!"

The two beings looked at all they made, the sun, the planets, the stars and moon, the earth, it was all dying, and they were sad. How had they not realized that they were doing harm just to try and be better than each other.

With that, they decided to make one more creation, together. The light molded a body with precise care, with skins and bones, arms and legs, and a head on its shoulders. The dark made the body function, with blood and muscle and a mind to think for itself. And together, they gave it a heart, so above all, man would be capable of love. Looking at their masterpiece now, the light and the dark felt a sense of peace, their art was beautiful, and they loved it. They loved all of it.

Daily Prompt

Postby Shoshana Re Menehat on July 23rd, 2014, 5:54 pm

She had played many sports when she was young, recruited by coaches due to her height and not necessarily her talent. It was a mistake people often made, assuming a tall person would be good at playing a sport. Height had been an advantage at times, but had not been enough to cause her to excel in any athletic activity, that was certain.

What Sandra loved was art. She had always loved it, she loved looking at it, learning about it, making it. The time she'd told her parents she was making her art minor into her major, well, she had thought her father might have a stroke on the spot. Sandra understood why. He had been worried for her, how would she make a living with art? No doubt, in his mind, he had imagined her living with some sort of commune, constantly covered with little else but paint, turning various household objects into equipment for drumming, signing paint splatters on the walls of the house and laughing maniacally while injected some conscious-altering substance into herself. But no, the closest she had come to such an existence had been her semester abroad in Chile.....Enrique was a beautiful man then. They still exchanged letters on occasion.

Now, the middle-aged woman stood before this newest offering made by a student. She could picture the poor young man staring at her with wide, eager eyes, she hated when they did that, not that she preferred the ones who thought they were too talented to be criticized. The ones who challenged her authority to tell them how they should perform THEIR art, as though they loved it more than she did. They were young. What did they know of loving art? If only she could give that confidence to students like this, who were still finding their voice, still seeking justification of their choice to dedicate their lives to the perfection of this certain skill.

Heels clacked on the tile behind her, announcing the arrival of her colleague. "Laura!" she greeted and accepted the coffee from the anthropology professor. It was time for a break. "How was your Christmas?"

Daily Prompt

Postby Braeth Frostfawn on July 23rd, 2014, 8:44 pm

'Hi, my name is Jack Elliot, and I live in New Forge. New Forge is a city started many hundred years ago, back in 2030, as an extensive project to solve the problem of humans abusing the earth, devouring all possible, resources, and generally creating an overpopulation problem. Yes, New Forge was a dream, some said, but with the backing of various fanatical political, environmental, and wealthy groups from all around the world, the plans to New Forge were put into motion, and the city would find itself alive, the single greatest city in the world. The entire World!

I'm sure it would have been a great and honest idea back then, and I'm sure their intentions were just. Now, however, I know that things have changed. New Forge isn't the greatest city anymore, no. It's the only city. When the world itself began to finally fight back against the human race, plants once edible forming subtle proteins that lured dangerous and sneaky bacteria to feed and cling to them, animals became smarter, harder to tame, harder to hunt, harder to breed, harder to control, and fierce as hell. It was like Mother Nature was taking a page right of Hitler's book, and employing the strategy of the Blitzkrieg on a global scale!

Well, New Forge was self sustaining by this point. New Forge was complicated, but I guess you could say it's closest to the Biblical "Noah's Arc", in a sense. Everyone who was already in, who had given their time, money, blood, sweat, and tears, had achieved something they weren't willing to share to those who needed but did not share in the work. You reap what you sow, I guess. New Forge Denizens, they were reaping what they had sown, and in their eyes, so were all the outsiders.

Now, well, things aren't much different. New Forge isn't growing anymore, it's just life as usual. We're technologically advance, very much so compared to the rest of their world before humans were annihilated, and now everything was built with the intention to create something. Energy, cleaner atmosphere, purify water, fighting harmful parasites or bacteria. I suppose I should be comfortable here, safe, but I can't. You see, we're all trapped here in the Forge. To leave the city is to be executed. Assuming you return, which if what I hear is true about the outside world, you will return. And when you do, expect to be shot before you get near that dome barrier.

I want to see the outside for myself, but I guess the cost is just too high.
