Lost Soul
General Information
Name: Vaenetyr Verogane
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Birthday: Spring 37, 487
Birthplace: Syliras
Raenetyr Verogane is a considerably large man when compared to the majority of humans in Mizahar, whose growth is usually stunted by malnutrition. While most men do not stand more than six feet tall, he exceeds that height by several inches, which elevates him above most and causes him to even tower above some. He weighs fifteen stone (210 pounds), most of which is corded muscle and strong bone. He is by no means hulking or weighty, but possesses a sturdy quality, with powerful arms and broad shoulders. He looks like a man who has been built by demanding exercise and stringent training.
Raenetyr's face is quite unforgettable, even though it lacks the severe scarring or serious deformation that one would normally associate with memorable features. The man's visage is a grim and menacing one, though in the cold and inscrutable way of those who have an expressionless countenance rather than an outwardly aggressive physiognomy. His crown is framed by lank brown hair that hangs down to his shoulders. Heavy and forbidding brows loom over a pair of dark eyes that sit like deep pools in Raenetyr's impassive countenance. A coarse, dark beard surrounds his mouth and shadows his cheeks and neck.

Character Concept
Raenetyr Verogane is a dour, taciturn man who rarely lets his emotions show. When he does, they are usually baser feelings, such as disgust or anger. When his sentiments do come to the surface, however, it is safe to say that they are genuine. Raenetyr's less-than-idyllic past has turned him into a cynical man who is often critical and harsh to those who lead bright or optimistic lives. Once a true ideologue, especially in his adolescence, Raenetyr's unfavorable experiences in life have jaded him to the point where he views the world with a scathing and often drastically skeptical lens.
Despite his misgivings and his negative outlook on life, Raenetyr still holds a sense of intense compassion (though it is a warped one, and if anyone were to mention it to him he would laugh before spitting in their face). He also possesses an unsparing sense of determination, an attribute that has been reaffirmed and strengthened throughout his life. During his service as a Syliran Knight, and later as a bounty hunter, he learned that strength of character is just as important as strength of body. He speaks with a Syliran accent.
Raenetyr's fighting style is similar to that learned by the Syliran Order, though it has developed over time into a form that is more brutal and savage in its execution; he has no qualms with fighting dirty. Raenetyr is surprisingly fast, especially for a man of his large stature. His agility is a trait that he rigorously strives to maintain, as it is often the bane of those who are unaware of the tempo he can set in battle. This, paired with his daunting strength, cements his reputation as a formidable warrior and a punishing foe.

Character History
Birth and Early Life
Raenetyr Varogane was born on the 37th day of summer, during the year 487, in the fortress-city of Syliras. His mother died in childbirth, a tragedy that was compounded by the fact that she was a disciple of Rak'keli, the goddess of healing. The irony was not lost Raenetyr's father, who became well-known for his regular habit of getting inebriated and cursing the gods both loudly and boorishly at all hours of the night. This meant that the infant was mostly raised by the midwife who had overseen his disastrous birth, a woman who was named Mildreth Verogane. Many parents did not want their children playing or socializing with the guttersnipe of the town drunk, which meant that his adolescence was spent with few friends.
Raenetyr began to naturally dislike and eventually hate his father, and by the time he was twelve summers old, he left to live with Mildreth, who adopted him on his 13th birthday. His teenage years were idyllic, as he finally began to make friends. By this time he was already a rather large individual, and many believed that he was destined to serve as a Syliran knight, himself included. Yet a part of Raenetyr was always fascinated and enticed by the exotic and mysterious merchants that would travel across the region to sell their wares.
It was this longing to delve into the unknown that drove Raenetyr to sign up under a bounty hunter looking for new recruits when he was 16 years old. The small caravan left the city that he had called home all of his life. Their destination was Sunberth, and they arrived in the Fall of 503. Raenetyr spent five seasons in the anarchistic settlement, where he learned the skills necessary for hunting men. He was disgusted and intrigued by the anarchistic life that they practiced in the "city without walls" and returned to Syliras during the first days of Summer. It was there that he finally became a squire for the Syliran Order.
Raenetyr adapted to the duties of a squire rather smoothly, and was regarded by many as an avid learner. This, along with his size and his prowess in the combat-oriented fields of study, meant that it took a little more than a year before the Windoak granted him his first quest. His task was to recover documents from the Alahean Empire that had survived the Valterrian and had come to the surface in the city of Ravok. While there, Raenetyr met a woman named Molly Fenshire, who he quickly became enamored with. He completed his quest with nary a hitch and returned to the Order with his newfound lover, and was knighted soon thereafter.
Raenetyr carried his status as a knight with the utmost pride; he had truly found his calling as an unranked knight within the brotherhood of the order. During this time, his mother Mildrethdied peacefully of old age. The death was about as good as one could ask for, and, though devastated, Raenetyr was not traumatized or scarred like the many inhabitants of Mizahar who have seen their guardians die of less fortunate means. After a season of mourning, Raenetyr returned to his duties to the Order and the city. But, unbeknownst to him, his personal life had begun to fester at the roots.
Raenetyr learned from a neighbor and friend that a strange person had been entering his household while he was on duty in the city. No sounds or signs of fighting had come from the apartment, and so the neighbor had thought nothing of it, had assumed that the man was a caretaker or craftsman of some kind. That is, until the visits began to accelerate in frequency and length. Raenetyr's wife, who was now pregnant with their first child, seemed ignorant on the subject, and he assumed that the homebody must have been mistaken. A couple weeks later, however, when the young knight came home earlier than expected, he found his spouse in bed with another man. The mysterious person who had destroyed Raenetyr's life in one fell swoop managed to escape through the window while he stood at the door in shock.
Raenetyr, heartbroken and infuriated beyond reason, held his own wife at swordpoint and forced her to reveal the extent of her betrayal. Molly, still flushed from the adulterous act, revealed tearfully that the affair had been going on for months. She told her frantic husband the name of her illicit lover and where he lived. To this day, no one really knows why Raenetyr was unable to murder the woman who had captured his heart and dashed it upon the floor, and many agree that it would have been better that way.
Neighbors and witnesses reported that Raenetyr had headed immediately to the Nettle District, which was where he had been told he would find the home of his wife's furtive partner. It should be noted that he stopped at several bars along the way, and word quickly spread that a Syliran Knight had gone rogue. By the time he reached the house, the full extent of what had happened had been realized, and he was frenzied with hate and mad with anger, and a few think they even heard him growling under his breath, like some wild animal.
Ser Raenetyr Verogane burst through the door of the small yet quaint apartment, and saw a bearded man reclining in a chair by the room's small hearth. Without hesitation, he grabbed his shocked victim and threw him against the adjacent wall. Before his foe could recover, the large knight had picked up the chair that his enemy had been sitting in. In one swing, he broke the chair against the stranger's torso, who promptly fell to the floor, unconscious.
Raenetyr's fellow knights, having heard the flying rumors of an out-of-control member of the order, managed to arrive on the scene before he could inflict any lasting or serious damage. They dragged their bellowing and thrashing comrade away, and made sure to disperse the small crowd that had gathered to see what had happened.
Perhaps the fallout would not have been so great if Raenetyr had gotten the right man. Gravely unfortunate circumstance had led Raenetyr to believe the address he had been given was that of his wife's adulterous companion; which it was, technically. But the inconstant offender had shared his lodgings with his brother, and it was he whom Raenetyr had assaulted. When he learned that he had beaten an innocent man, and that his true target had stolen out of the city with his unfaithful wife, Raenetyr was truly, utterly broken. Unable to forgive himself for his unlawful assault, and unfit to serve further, he turned in his spurs and armor and left the Syliran Knights, in the Winter of 509. Whether he went to the Windoak before his self-imposed exile is unknown.
For two seasons, Raenetyr tried and failed to hold a series of odd jobs in the city. His home, once clean and orderly, became cluttered and foul, and he took to drinking himself into a stupor more almost every night. Many whispered that he was cursed to become like his father, a godless drunk who would eventually be numb to all the outside world. True to this assumption, it was said that he barely batted an eye when he learned that the child Molly had carried was not even his. She and her new lover had gone back to Ravok, and they could rot there for all that he cared.
It was another two seasons until Raenetyr heard news of her again. This time, it was not from an old connection in the city, but from his estranged wife herself. And it was urgent. Her son had been kidnapped by slavers, and she begged him to help. But why should he? The whelp was not even his; why should he have given a rat's arse what happened to the little bastard? But something stirred him. Perhaps it was that the boy was less than a year old, and would never know a life beyond backbreaking labor and servitude if he did not intervene. Perhaps he still felt connection to the boy, as if he was the son he should have always had. Whatever the case, Raenetyr took it upon himself to find the boy, and he left Syliras in 511.
His hunt took him to Zeltiva, and then to his home away from home; Sunberth. Although it had been years since he had been a bounty hunter, Raenetyr was able to slowly catch up to the slavers. But it seemed that Raenetyr's suffering was not over, that the knife of fate would be twisted cruelly one, last time. Just as he was on the cusp of catching the men who had stolen away his wife's child, he found that the poor youth had died. Treatment of slaves was and is nigh unbearable, especially in Sunberth, and the infant had died of one of the many diseases that plagued the lawless city. The fate of the slavers who had taken him is unknown, though they seemed to disappear at around the same time Raenetyr learned of the boy's death. Raenetyr managed to recover the body of his unofficial son before it was condemned to the Slag Heap Fire. However, in doing so, he learned that the boy had actually been sold by Molly and her second husband after they had gotten into serious trouble with debtors in Ravok. That this child could not feel the sun upon his skin, and could never again taste the cool night air, simply because his lecherous wife and her lover had had a gambling problem; that was too much, the final straw. Raenetyr cut off all contact with those he had known; any and all illusions he had still maintained about honor or fairness were dissipated like smoke on the wind, and the once-noble knight of Syliras was quickly lost in the chaos of Sunberth. That was only weeks before the Djed Storm of 512, two very, very long years ago.
