Summer 514 19th Day 13th Bell
The Bronze Woods….it was so quiet, Kreig didn’t like it when it was quiet. Kreig was part of a patrol sent out to check sightings of Yukmen within the area ‘ Ugly bastards’ Came the thought as Kreig recalled their images to his head. He’d came to learn much about Yukmen, having fought a horde of them with Ser Titus once. He’d learnt more on each subsequent patrol he went on with the knights and of course his Patron.
First thing he learned about the creatures was that they were practically everywhere in world, like weeds they sprouted from the earth and generally causing a ruckus whenever they do. He found himself watching the ground as he rode the horse provided for him, before him was his Patron as she rode her own horse. Evidently she didn’t find any trouble riding hers….The brawler found himself nearly falling off once or twice even as he held the reigns, his butt was getting sore too which certainly didn’t help matter. Still… his nerves were still frayed by the thought of Yukmen, which in truth it was only their nature that unnerved him….. Fighting ‘em and Killing ‘em were all good fun!
“ Are you doing alright, Kreig?” Came Sera Natasha’s concerned voice, yet she didn’t bother looking back as she could easily deduce her squires current feelings, at least when it came to riding a horse that is.
“Oh, quite alright Sera…quite alright” He said unconvincingly, he wasn’t trying to be in anycase and simply allowed his thoughts to roam back to the Yukmen. Yes, unnerving creatures they were…. The second thing he learned about them happened to come from his patron herself. They creatures were aggressive, they barely tolerate each other and hardly tolerate anyone else actually, no mercy for any humanoid they layed their eyes upon…. Ironically their very appearances were cruel mockeries of the humanoid races they happened to be emulating, only about a foot shorter, green , naked to an unsightly degree and literally looking like they were of the earth, with rocks and what not embedded into their skin.
Suddenly Kreig felt the painted horse he was riding on trotting over a small tree in the road, almost slipping off the thing and letting his arse hit the ground! But luckily for him he was able to regain his balance…. And again let his thoughts back to the Yukmen. Thinking of the most unnerving thing about them yet; they’re ability to learn. Yes, it was to be feared more than their endless aggression and mindless cruelty. A yukmen ability to learn was simply frightening, they couldn’t be called sentient, fully thinking and what not; in fact they can be quite stupid, but their ability to learn and adapt was far more than any humanoid…. If it sees someone doing something, it could learn it just like that. If someone were to hit a yukmen in the knee to break its bones and immobilize, another who saw it would attempt it and succeed with unerring accuracy and other yukmans would learn it as well…. If one learned how to use weapons efficiently than the rest of them would quickly learn too.
“Shyke upon the earth we walk, they are…” Kreig muttered beneath his breath, wishing he had his armor with him, but alas the weather was too hot for his breastplate and grieves. He only had his studded gauntlets to protect his fists. His own patron was wearing a lighter set of armor, Kreig could have worn leather armor as well but he reasoned that against a Yukmen they wouldn’t have made a slight difference…. Yes, there were a number of unnerving things about yukmen. But for once he did not dwell on them at the moment as he now focused on the silence of the forest.
Kreig was no woodsman, he couldn’t tell you what animal belonged to what family, what was the name of the plants and trees nor what was the best route or shortcut through them. But he did have eyes and ears, and they said the same thing; something was definitely wrong. His ears and eyes could hear and see mostly nothing, not the chirping of the birds or the birds themselves, not the rustling of foliage and what it did hear and see was very unpleasing; the horses were restless, they could sense the danger lurking. Kreig couldn’t get his horse to calm as it fidgeted, trying to turn back to Syliras. Sera Natasha didn’t have that difficulty as she seemed to whisper calming words into her horse whilst also keeping it straight.
“ Be prepared Kreig, it seems danger is afoot”
“Really? I could hardly tell” He muttered dryly, wondering if his Patron thought he was as dumb as he looked sometimes. But he kept his eyes open, that he did, his ears were listening too…waiting for the Yukmen to make themselves known. In the meantime they had kept moving forward, they knew there was a definite presence of something…. Even if there was a scant chance it wasn’t Yukmen they would still be careful, danger is danger after all.
Then suddenly they appeared, like a band of bandits coming out of the woods the Yukmen took to the road with a loud shout and startled the horses, and Kreig too, half to death as the Horses jumped back on two legs. Kreig and Natasha held on for dear life as to not fall off as their horses panicked, Natasha pulled on the reigns as her horse stood on all fours again, forcing it not to run but Kreig was not so lucky as his horse sped off with him on it “PEEEEEEEETCH MEEEEE” He shouted as he held on to dear life, practically hugging the horse as it ran straight through the yukmen, one of them having the misfortune of being caught underfoot and having its skull crushed beneath one of its hooves.
“SHYKE SHYKE SHYKE” The brawler’s eyes were closed as the horse ran through the forest, right off the path. Luck was definitely not on the brawler’s side, as he had no grasp of control over the damnable creature and to his horror he felt himself slipping off “OH SHYKE, NO! BY THE GODS I WILL NOT…” and thus he fell off the horse, into a thick bundle of bushes that cushioned his fall but did nothing to stop him from feeling out of breath and bruised from the whole thing.
“Yuk!”
‘Oh like I don’t have enough problems already!’
