The 84th of Summer 514AV
The Azure Market

A grin was plastered on his face as he squeezed his lean body through the waves of people in the sea of the Azure market, brushing and skirting past lots and lots of citizens. Some of the passerby’s lost their wallet in the process, quick hands with even faster fingers shot out and returned with a pouch filled with coins. Of course it went wrong sometimes, when a person noticed their wallet being hauled out of their pockets. Still, Brandon was not one to let himself be caught, keeping an eye on people’s reactions was something of a habit when he entered ‘pickpocket-mode’.

It was a second nature to be observant, it was no problem letting go of the pouch on a moment’s notice if his target noticed and it was even less of a problem to slip into the safety of the masses like a shade when the he risked discovery. The trick to pickpocketing was to look ordinary and not suspicious, so Brandon did not wear his cloak today. It was warm enough to leave it at home anyway, but he did wear his scarf, he was rarely seen without it.

There was no real reason why Brandon roamed about the market today, there was no assignment from Mr. Black he had to fulfill, nor a true need for money. However, he wanted a bit of entertainment, and thus he had decided to go watch the faces of people he robbed when they realized their wallet was gone, stolen. That was always very amusing, even if it might be a bit of a cruel thing to do … but, who could claim that they did not like to watch the misery of others? It was better than watching your own after all. If given a choice everyone would choose to let another suffer and the rest laugh instead of being the one laughed at. That was also the very reason why people often found it hilarious when others fell on their face after having tripped over a stone on the streets, not being very attentive in their haste.

With a smile he brushed past the stall of a merchant selling pies and skirted past the trio of women giggling and gossiping with a conspiratorial tone. A hand slipped into the basket filled with groceries one of them carried, returning with some sort of circular, warm and soft object. His nostrils twitched when he brought it in front of him, ready to bite. Mmm…. Meat pastries were always a delight to devour, and this one was still warm and freshly bought –now stolen- too! As his teeth bit a part off of it, a rich and delicious taste filled his mouth, taste buds shedding tears of joy. It was gone too soon, the warm and tasty meat-product was something the bat very much liked to eat, yet he never bought them and thus he didn’t often get to spoil his belly with its taste. Only on occasions like this actually.

T

Whoa ! That guy looks very fun to rid of his money… Brandon thought upon seeing the colorful figure pushing through the crowd. Not only did he look as if everything and anyone was beneath him, he had an air around him that claimed him to be untouchable. Well, Brandon was more than willing to wipe that smug expression off his face. A grin erupted as his face muscles turned the corners of his mouth slightly upwards and he stealthily started following the man, slipping through the crowd with the ease of someone adept in doing so.

In fact, he progressed a lot faster than his target, who had started an argument with a courier who was in a rush to deliver a message but wasn’t let through by the haughty man. An eyebrow raised, Brandon cocked an ear to try and listen, but just on that moment a gentle and soft voice attracted his attention. Eyes shifted focus and rolled towards the user of the voice, a female human with braided raven black hair and emerald orbs. Shyly she stared at the ground rather than looking at Brandon while she spoke a little timidly, fingers fidgeting with the hem of her dress. “Ehm … C-can I h-help you, s-sir?” Though probably older than him, Brandon guessed she was fairly young by human standards, and not very used to dealing with customers –even if he wasn’t a customer. “Not really,” he replied before shooting a glance over his shoulder, “I was just having a quick look.” Upon hearing those words the girl lowered herself back onto her chair, more or less trying to become one with it. The nervousness she emitted actually stirred the air and made him feel rather awkward, the same thing applied to other potential customers, it seemed as they all but turned away and snuck to the neighboring stand.

The thief followed suit, not really feeling like sticking around. Fortunately his target had started to move again too, so Brandon broke through the crowd on a parallel trajectory to the man’s, albeit a little behind him. If it had been anyone else, Brandon would have searched for a recognizable feature which he could use to find his victim in the crowd and not to lose them, but that wasn’t really necessary here. The target stood out as a rainbow between dark clouds, making things quite a bit easier for the Kelvic.

Honestly, that red with gold and purple outfit was just ridiculous, not only did the man attract quite a lot of attention, he didn’t even seem bothered by it, seeming pleased with the quick averting of gazes and hushed whispers that were all but making fun of the man’s clothes. It was –how unlikely it might seem- probable that the man took the whispers not as gossip or ridicule of his eccentric taste, but as praise. Whatever the case, he seemed to raise his chin even higher in the air. Brandon had a hard time not bursting out in laughter when following in the wake of the man, hearing the whispered comments uttered by the people, mocking his strange sense of fashion.

Brandon stalked forwards, silent steps closing the distance while the man had trouble wrestling through the mass of people. While closing in was not really a good thing, there was nothing Brandon could do, his movements were too effective in this crowd, his body moved on its own, adapting to the people and slipping through. Even if he tried walking like the rest, he failed because he became too frustrated and found his progress being too slow. In the end he almost stuck to his target’s back while walking.

After a chime or so, the thief was fed up with pretending to search for a way to pass the obstacle of a man in front of him and just did so with relative ease. Again making sure there were a couple of meters between the two of them he matched his pace to the man’s, still being faster. However, the Kelvic compensated that fact by pretending to study the items on display of various stalls every so often, thus also giving him an opportunity to observe the rainbow-clad target a bit.

The problem was that while the man himself was as easy to spot as the sun on a day with a clear sky, his wallet was not. Even if his ears were sensitive enough to hear the clinking of coins, the bustle of the market drowned that sound. Seeing as he couldn’t watch his target deeply enough by walking in front of him, Brandon decided to let the man pass the bat again, and picked up a vase in the meantime, pretending to be fascinated by it. There was nothing really special about it though, it was just a piece of pottery, clay painted with bright greens, reds and yellows. There was a pattern he could discern, images that did not really make that much sense to him, but well, he didn’t care.

A salesman slowly paced over to him and asked the anticipated question if the thief was interested in the vase. Naturally, Brandon said he was, questioning the vendor about the images painted on the pottery, it seemed something one interested in the object would ask. With the confidence and flair of a merchant who was certain he would get to sell his wares to someone, the vendor started explaining. Apparently, the pictures were a representation of Syna and Leth during the Valterrian, five hundred and fourteen years ago. They depicted how Syna reached out for Zintila, how Leth stopped her and took the attack aimed at the sun goddess and their retreat. During the trader’s story, Brandon nodded, actually caught up in the tale and momentarily forgetting the colorful man that battled the crowd while passing him.

Only when the tale had come to an end and he noticed the laughable outfit on his right side, he readied himself to leave, asking for the price just to keep up the act. While the merchant certainly didn’t ask for a sum of money too pricey for this artefact, Brandon let the corners of his mouth droop and stated with a serious tone that it was too expensive. That shocked the vendor quite a bit, his expression one of confusion and disbelieve. While the bat turned away, he stammered something, still baffled but lost sight of his customer in the crowd immediately. Hidden in the sea of bodies, Brandon couldn’t help but chuckle, the merchant’s visage was just too priceless! The confidence it had displayed prior had been all but wiped away, replaced by failure and disbelief. Recalling the image time and time again, the Kelvic continued his pursuit of the colorful haughty man, grinning like an idiot.

Said mix of colors proceeded still with great effort, and was despite his head start easily caught up with by the Kelvic thief. It was then that Brandon spotted the slight bulge on the man’s hip, the place where his wallet was kept, probably. The thief found he had wasted enough time tailing and started closing in, ready to pickpocket. Still, his eyes scanned the man vigorously, the way he moved, the way he observed the world. It didn’t seem like the target was really paying much attention to the environment, but that could be an act. In any case, the meeting between the two of them had to be as brief as possible, a quick passing during which he would steal the wallet and continue his path as if nothing had happened. The walking color palette suddenly turned to the right, actually almost cutting the bat off, but the thief managed to slow himself down to a near-stop.

It appeared that the fellow had been looking for one stand in particular, and had just found it, starting a conversation with the owner of that stand. Brandon cursed internally, the crowd would be not as enveloping as it could have been, picking pockets would be slightly harder, but not that much. Strolling towards the man, the bat slightly moved one arm away from his body, a tad bit closer to his target and when passing just a few centimeters apart he struck. Again, his hand shot out, into the pocket that had the bulge, carefully going deep enough to grab a pouch and returned with the same caution. It was important to come close, to give his hand enough time to enter and exit the pocket without touching the man’s leg. (If that would happen, he would be caught for sure.) The hardest part was not to slow down his pace, which was why he had to get close and give his hand time enough to both enter and exit the pocket. Of course he had become a lot better since the start of his career, but it wasn’t simple yet.

Still, he managed to retract his hand along with the pouch and kept on walking, heading to the next stand. During the time it took to get there, his fingers brushed over the wallet and counted the coins inside while letting it disappear in his own pocket, yet there wasn’t much to count really. One coin was all that was in there, and while he couldn’t be certain what value it had, Brandon was pretty sure it was a jade kina. But that explained why there had only been a slight bulge and why he had experienced so much trouble locating the pouch, the man just didn’t carry that much with him at all! Well, his expression would be enough of a reward anyways.

Ears cocked and focused to pick up everything the two would tell each other –from the loudest of screams to the quietest of whispers- Brandon slightly tensed up a bit, rigid with excitement as he picked up a hand mirror and intensely stared at it, his own reflection staring back as intense. It wasn’t like the bat hadn’t seen his own face before, but it had been quite a while and with interested look he studied his features, finally settling on his jawline. The goatee that adorned his chin was becoming a little old, he found and his cheeks were starting to sprout hairs as well. Strangely enough, the hair on other places than his chin did not grow even half as fast as the ones that made up his goatee, but he should get a trim sometime soon, or just rid himself of his facial hair altogether… He wouldn’t miss it that much, if at all.

“… is not what I meant to say, you know that.” The conversation seemed to have been going on for a bit and with no further wasting time on his face, Brandon started listening.
“I know you didn’t, old friend, but you know how my wife is. Always insulted by anything and everything,” the merchant spoke calmly, reassuring the color-clad man.
“If you say so,” the palette spoke hesitantly, a tad bit nervous. The merchant snorted. “Hmpf! I’m telling you there’s no need to feel worried! If there’s someone who should be apologizing, it should be me, for my wife’s behavior. I’m telling you, ever since my daughter started dating that Sam Oakly, the whole world has become her enemy!” A quick glance to the right revealed that he was shaking his head briefly. “But that’s my problem, not yours. Tell me, what brings you here today?”
“Do I need a reason to stop by and chat with a friend?” the man said playfully, dodging the question but just fooling around.
“Of course not, Ichiro,” the vendor replied with the same tone, “But I can see in your eyes that a light-hearted conversation is not why you’re here.”

“You know me too well, Odilon,” grinned Ichiro, his voice dripping with amusement, “You are right, of course.” He paused for a brief moment before continuing on a more serious tone. “I’m here to gather recommendations,” he spoke quietly, not really wanting to let others overhear, though his efforts were useless when pitted against Brandon’s superhuman hearing abilities.
“Recommendations? ” queried the merchant with the same volume, “What for?”
Another grin, but this time the man looked at the street, a little nervous. “For the position of Councilor of Business and Industry in the Council of Radiance,” he confessed.

A long, awkward pause stretched between the two men, while the merchant stood there with his mouth agape, the palette of colors fidgeted. And then, finally Odilon managed to speak again.
“You? Councilor? You are not kidding, are you?”
“I’m dead serious,” came the answer.
Odilon rubbed his cheek in thought. “Well, I do suppose I could picture you sitting behind a desk in that shiny tower…” he began, “but… That’s a lot of responsibility and a huge step you are taking… can you handle it? I mean, I’m not saying you can’t, but there will be a lot of stress you will have to deal with, as well as an army of secretaries, Seiza and clerks and whatnot. I hear that the Councilor of Magic is having trouble herself. Some of her staff are getting worried, the word going around is that she’s underestimated the job and is barely managing not to be driven insane by the mountains of paperwork.”
Ichiro pursed his lips. “Well, she isn’t a merchant like we are. We are used to do paperwork.”
“That’s comparing a goat with an Okomo,” the merchant retaliated.
“Perhaps, but I-”

The joust of convincing words continued for quite a while and Brandon kept listening, though being a little bored and totally ignoring the owner of the stand who kept asking if he was going to buy that mirror or not.

“Fine. I see you won’t take no for an answer… I will write you that recommendation, but!” the playful tone returned to his voice, “you’ll have to buy me the materials.” With a huge grin he placed a brush, an ink pot and a sheet of paper on his stand. “Ink, paper and effort. That will be five jade kina, because you’re my friend.” He burst out in laughter.
“Still the ruthless businessman, huh? Alright then, sold!” Ichiro too started talking with that playful tone, a tone of good friends playing around. The ever-colorful man dug with a hand in his pocket and all of a sudden the smile was gone. His arm franticly searched his pocket, but returned empty.

“What’s wrong?”
“It seems as though someone picked my pockets… My wallet is gone.” Though the expression Brandon had hoped to see did not show on the man’s face, instead there was a smug grin. “Fortunately, I foresaw something like that might happen and stored my money somewhere else. ” This time, his hand disappeared into his vest and returned with a pouch that was relatively well filled. “What that thief stole was my decoy-pouch. While there was money in there, it wasn’t much, so I don’t really care. It is quite satisfying to know that it actually worked! ” Both men started roaring with laughter.
“Oh, I’d like to see that thief’s face should he find out!” forced Odilon out of his mouth before succumbing to the laughter again.

Said thief was not angry at all, rather a bit frustrated, but not quite in a bad way. He grinned too, accepting the challenge with pleasure. How could he be angry, the man had just revealed the true place where his money was kept, which was enough to cheer the Kelvic up. Turning away from the stall, he crossed the street to another stand and waited, biding his time until the colorfully dressed man resumed his way. Brandon followed suit, catching up with Ichiro and stopping the man by grabbing his shoulder. “Oh, sir can I have a moment please?” His target switched his gaze to the man who had actually made him halt and raised an eyebrow.

“You see, I have just arrived and I was wondering where I should go to get information regarding housing and all that. The guards at the entrance said I should look for the cosmos center, but I can’t find it anywhere.”
“The Cosmos Center? Well, let’s see…” Ichiro began, starting to look around for a landmark he could use to navigate this ‘stranger’ to the Center. That was all Brandon needed, the distraction was there and his fingers were ready. While the man looked off to the side, Brandon slipped a hand in the inner pocket of Ichiro’s unbuttoned vest, finding the pouch with ease. Then, since it did not connect with the man’s body in any way, he sneakily and swiftly pulled it out, and placed it in his own pocket, where he previously had stored the man’s decoy pouch.

“I think you’d best go there,” Ichiro said, pointing in the direction he meant, “Go back to the gate and you should see a path on your left hand side. Follow that path and you will arrive at the center shortly. It’s hardly possible to miss.” That last bit obviously questioned how the bat could have managed to get lost. “Ah! To the left, I just went straight after passing the gates! Thank you sir! ” he nodded as he took off and buried one hand in his pocket. Thank you very, very much! A grin split his face in two as he disappeared into the crowd once again.

Now Brandon was walking towards the gate, since he found it was best to stick to his story, that Ichiro guy might suspect something was off if he saw Bran still strolling about the Azure. Of course that was no problem at all, the part of the Azure closest to the gate was as well suited for picking pockets as the mid-section. Well, all crowded places were favored by pickpockets, so any would do, but Bran had made the Azure his preferred terrain. As such he knew all spots to hide, all alleys and the places where to find the stands as well as the place where the regular vendor’s stood.

Still, he could not be overconfident in his abilities for it would make him slack off and ignore too much important telltales and other clues that could have saved him from discovery. Zigzagging through the people, the bat suddenly found himself standing in a bit of open space, with a familiar figure sitting against the wall, a crutch lying next to him, an arm securing it so it wouldn’t get stolen. Of course, no one was pathetic enough to actually take the crutch from the cripple beggar.

“Hello, Raoul!” the thief greeted cheerfully, beaming the old beggar a radiant smile.
“Well well! If it isn’t Brandon!” retorted the scrounger amused, “Or do I have to call you Djas? I don’t know which you prefer.”
“Djas will do, I suppose,” Brandon stated , not really surprised with the beggar’s knowledge of his alias. Raoul was one who knew just about anything that was going on in the city after all. The old man was more than what he appeared to be; while people thought he was insane, and lived in a world of fantasies, Bran knew the beggar saw and heard things no-one else did indeed, but that the information was the real thing.

“And what are you up to today? Working or having fun? Or both?” He grinned his teethless grin and winked knowingly.
“I think I’m just having fun today, but I hardly ever know which one I really am doing.” A shrug.
“And how are things going for you these days? I hear whispered rumors about thieves and burglars. The people are getting rather restless and nervous… Shinya patrols are increasing. They are looking out for criminals even more vigorously than before.”
“Yeah, I guessed as much,” Brandon replied with a bit of annoyance in his voice, “But well, there’s nothing much we can do about it, as long as that Incognito guy keeps running rampage the Shinya will be watching intensely.” A sigh, his own actions, his desire to make name for himself by leaving notes had caused this, but a real problem it wasn’t yet. That didn’t mean it couldn’t become one though.

“True, but knowing you, that shouldn’t be too much trouble, right?” The beggar grinned, revealing his missing teeth once more. Brandon was a little surprised by the man’s knowledge of his profession and all, but well, it was to be expected. Raoul was pretty much the eyes and ears of the streets after all. “Perhaps, but only time will tell, Raoul, only time will tell.” A brief pause and Bran searched his pocket for the decoy pouch he’d stolen from the councilor of Business and Industry to be. A careless motion threw it in the beggar’s lap. Raoul didn’t bat an eye and just let the contents slide into his palm and then into his pocket. It was one kina. “You know Bran- Djas- there are a couple of pickpockets active today. I noticed at least two running around before you stopped by. Maybe it would be for the best you kept your eyes open and fingers ready to retaliate. Wouldn’t want them to take your money.” The bat nodded.
“Thanks for the warning, I’ll be on my guard.” And with that he left, the amused beggar bursting out in laughter for no apparent reason.

T

While Raoul seemed to have entertained Brandon with a bit of chitchat, it was quite the opposite. The bat often stopped by and expected to be given useful information, which he rewarded with Kina, and continued his way. It was mostly information about the Shinya or about other thieves’ activity, useful information. And it was a good thing that Raoul had mentioned the thieves, because Brandon often forgot that he was not the only one in Lhavit. As he had said, he did continue his way with caution, paying more attention to his surroundings than before and his efforts were rewarded.

During his stroll lots of people brushed past -or did he brush past them?- and it was only natural that there would be at least one who would try to steal his newly acquired pouch. However, the bat did not seem to take precautions or other steps to guard himself, no. In fact, he wanted to attract the other thieves and do a little test with them. Often had he wondered how the Shinya had managed to push him down while not touching him, how they apprehended criminals. He’d like to find out, but therefore he’d need a criminal to frame.

It did not take too long before he noticed the weight lifting from his leg, the budge of the wallet disappearing when an inconspicuous person passed him. A grin emerged and his own hand slithered into the pocket of the pickpocket and returned with Ichiro’s pouch immediately after having lost it. It was no big deal, thieves worked fast in this discipline of larceny, and thus they were done quickly too. As such, Brandon had time enough to retrieve his stolen wares before they had completely passed each other. It was then that he turned around on his heels and started tailing the other criminal, a mischievous smile on his features.

Much to his pleasure, the Kelvic thief noticed that other pickpockets were harder to follow than an ordinary merchant. It wasn’t because they moved faster, no, it was because they moved more efficiently. They knew how to slip through the gaps between bodies, when to go sideways instead of forward and were pretty much hard to keep eyes on. The other thief seemed to be a young female, her slender form hidden by baggy clothing, but could still be detected when she skirted past some individuals. However that was about the only thing that was remarkable about her, otherwise she was completely forgettable and bland. Well, as long as one did not get a look at her face, that is.

It seemed she had yet to notice Brandon had reclaimed his stolen money, but that could have been because the pockets of her trousers were quite stuffed with wallets and the little bit of extra weight vanishing wasn’t really apparent. Not that it mattered, as long as she did not notice him stalking behind her, he would be able to execute his plan and to gain some valuable information about the Shinya. The fact that he had to be a jerk and get a fellow thief arrested was not something he cared about. Brandon had no sympathy for the competition, nor mercy for the ones that dared to steal from him, even if he had lured them into it.

For chimes the pickpocket of a woman did not really do much besides walking and subtly ridding people of their wallets every now and then, letting it drop into the large pockets of her pants without as much of a thought. Brandon was quite fascinated by her elegant way of using her criminal skill, her hand and arm resembling more a ribbon playing in the wind than a hungry snake –which was what Brandon compared his arm and hand to. Still though, he wondered what his own limb looked like when picking pockets; was it rough but quick and fast, like a lightning bolt or –indeed- a snake shooting out with jaws wide and fangs bared to devour its prey? Or was it as graceful as hers, curving elegantly and smoothly?

Still, no matter how interesting the subject might have been, the bat had to focus on his goal, getting information and exploiting this opportunity. It wasn’t a big deal anyways, for thieves it was steal or be stolen from, and more often than not even if they worked together, they did not trust in each other, for the simple fact that they were all criminals, backstabbers and kleptomaniacs. Besides, stealing from a thief was one of the more exciting things to do, they were much more vigilant than the regular citizen.

Having arrived at a stand that sold scarves, the female pickpocket ceased her movement to gawk at the wares, picking one up and testing the fabric and quality. One of the stand’s attenders hurried over and started bragging in a vendor-ish way. Brandon had thought she’d walk away since her chance to palm it was lost, but instead she stayed where she was, probably thinking of buying. A golden opportunity. The woman just next to her was about to do the exact same thing and the bat smirked cruelly. It was time to get busy.

Where the money pouch of the customer hung was no problem to find out, it was kept in clear sight, stuck under a fashionable large belt. Fingers reached out for the bottom of the pouch while he pretended to be examining the scarves as well, and slowly and carefully pulled. Nerve-wrecking was the speed the bat used, but caution was needed if he did not want to be found out. Slow to him the process was, but in fact he was done in less than two ticks. Sometimes it was really strange how everything seemed to slow down when nerves overwhelmed him. Then came the hardest part: putting the wallet in the pickpocket’s pants. One hand donated the pouch to the other, fingers noticing the pattern sewn into it, making it conveniently recognizable.

Trembling slightly, and starting to perspire a lot more than usual, the thief carefully lowered his and with the wallet into the female criminal’s pocket, until he felt the hardness of other coins stopping his fingers. Letting go of the coin pouch he slipped his fingers out of the coin pocket and took a step back, exhaling with trembling lips and throbbing nervousness. He had done it, he had succeeded! Now all he needed to do was relax and watch the show.

A slender hand reached into the pocket Brandon had just left, fishing up the pouch he had just deposited in there. Another hand opened it and handed a couple of kina to the vendor while the woman next to her searched for her pouch desperately. Then, by complete coincidence she looked to the right while the female pickpocket paid for a scarf. “THIEF!!!” she yelled at the top of her lungs, grabbing the pouch with clawing hands. The thief jumped out of her skin and fled, wide eyed and confused, slipping through the crowd with relative ease. The bat was on her heels.

Somehow she managed to exit the Azure in no time, stumbling as she was spitted out by the crowd and looked around her, bewildered. ‘Which way to go?’ was probably what went through her mind, her legs frozen in place as her head shot from left to right. She decided on left, but before she could take two steps, a bunch of Shinya emerged from that direction, forcing her to flee the other way. It was no use though. As Brandon watched from the edge of the crowd, he saw how the woman seemed to stumble, one leg held in place, but trying to move. It resulted in her figure falling to the ground, flailing and screaming. She tried to crawl away, but again her leg was stuck in nothing. Two guards approached while a third stayed back, one arm limp and useless until the others secured her and hauled her back to her feet. Then his arm was useable all of a sudden and he seemed to test whether it moved in the way he wanted to, rotating around the shoulder, bending his elbow and clenching a fist a couple of times.

Brandon raised an eyebrow at the strange sight, perplexed and then stared at the female thief as she was dragged away, still fighting desperately to regain her freedom. Feeling a little guilty, the bat lowered his head and whispered an apology she would never hear and then turned around, diving back into the crowd. It was time to head home, there was a lot to think about… The thief just hoped the punishment wouldn’t be too severe… Ah what was he thinking? A pretty face and he was getting all soft! No, she was as guilty as he was, and whatever would come next, the spectacle he had witnessed would help him in devising a plan to escape the Shinya should be find himself in such a situation. Nodding slowly, the Kelvic strode onwards, through the alleys that were the Azure.
