Lo'campo went to bed having a restful sleep until it was rudely interrupted by Jilene the landlord kicking in his door like a guard and demanding him to get up out of bed. The Akalak mumbled slumbered words under his breath shooing the blind woman away only to have his sheets pulled off him revealing his nude body. Tough she was blind he still could feel the embarrassment creeping onto his face as Jilene stood over him with a stern look on her face. Taking a moment to conceal and compose, Lo'campo finally stood up and looked the woman up and down. She wore a long elegant dress that resembled the color of rolled steel. The candles illumanated the scene making her look mysterious and shady. Her hair was let down over her shoulder nearly engulfing her face thus bringing out her gray eyes. "You up?" she asked still looking at the floor. Lo'campo felt bad for the woman. He couldn't imagine being blind and not being able to see let alone being blind in Sunberth. He started to move his hand to lift her head so she could look him in the face but stopped half way thinking that it would be rude of him. Yea I'm up he said putting a fake strain on his voice to make it seem as if he had just waken up. There was a pause for a moment from Jilene she was silent. When Lo'campo first saw this he figured that she had another condition along with her blindness. Now he had learned that she was concentrating on preventing herself from blushing.
Regaining herself she darted her head toward Lo'campo "It's time for work" she quickly said not wasting anytime for conversation. The usual Jilene short and straight to the point. Lo'campo put a serious expression on his face ready to know what he was going to be doing on his first day on the job until he caught a glimpse of outside and realized that the moon was still up. Do you know what time it is? He asked thinking that she had made a mistake in waking him and that she would realize this and go back to bed but the sly smirk on her face said otherwise.
She walked over to the window and leaned on the wall next to it. Yes. I know what time it is I had one of the children wake me up at the fifth bell of the morning so I could wake you up at the sixth. Lo'campo looked at her as if she was crazy. This had to be some type of joke or prank that she was playing on him though her face said otherwise. "Why?" He asked now agitated and curious of the reason that he was waken up so early. Don't you listen? It's time for you to work. How else am I going to get my rent if you don't work for your pay? This was true, Lo'campo recalled the conversation that they had in the very room that they stood in where she gave him a room for a moderate price in addition to a job maintaining along with protecting the building and it's inhabitants to which he agreed. However nothing would have caused him to suspect that she would wake him this early in the morning to start his duties. Swallowing the lump in the throat he proceeded to ask what had to be done in which she handed him a piece of paper containing a plethora of things that needed to be done. "That is why you need to wake up so early. Get to work. Upon that being said the human walked past Lo'campo and out the door leaving the giant in his room reading over the first few lines of a lengthy list.
Lo'campo extended his body upward until his joints popped indicating that his muscles were alert and active. With a yawn and rubbing of his chest, he made his way to his bureau obtaining his robes and weapons. He sat on the edge of his bed and reviewed the list given to him. It consisted of pages all containing different instructions and duties for him to do. At the top of the list read the words in the writing of what looked like a child Clean windows He traveled from his bed to the window opening it and sliding his finger across the opposite side pulling back a blackened finger tip. Cleaning off his finger he returned to the bed. There was a loud clank at the door followed by a knock then footsteps leaving. Opening the door sat a water filled bucket and thick cotton clothes. Lo'campo sighed. When Jilene wanted something done there was no patience with the woman. Gripping the bucket and the cloth he walked down the hall toward the door that would lead outside.
The early morning air nipped at his face. He was happy to be wearing his robes. The moon was still out being his source of light until the sun made it's appearance. It was almost fall. He could feel it in the wind as well as see it on the trees with leaves that were already changing into color. He analyzed the building standing 3 stories tall and traveled back behind an army of trees and other flora. With a sigh he rolled up his sleeves and dipped the cloth into the bucket. It was time to start working. He stepped to the first window covered with dirt and mud hardened from the heat of the sun to cause problems for him to try and solve. He wipe at the window only breaking the first level of many and covering up his cloth in dirt. With a sigh he dipped the cloth back into the bucket water turning the clear liquid into a murky puddle. He sighed. today was going to be a long day for him. |

Sunberth, 90, Spring 514A.V
The sun crept over the horizon providing warmth to all the waking bodies of Sunberth. The rays shone light that cut through the Quarter's yard showing where to mornings dew took it's place. His arms were sore from scrubbing the windows of the first floor his muscles throbbing worse than when he would train. Wrenching out his cloth letting the dirty water fall to the dirt he picked up yet another murky filled bucket taking it to get refilled. He had made his job more of workout rather than an actual job. Retrieving the water filled bucket the blue warrior held the heavy item up and in front of him as he walked down to a small lake not too far from the Quarter. His arms ached as he walked begging to be able to rest. Push harder He kept telling himself lifting the bucket up and down using it as a weight.
Refilling the bucket and returning to his home Lo'campo stood back to look at his work but was soon disappointed to see that he still had two more stories to go. He studied the building looking for a way to get up that high seeing that he didn't have a ladder nor rope to help scale the wall. He had to improvise searching for any way to get up to the next level. He noticed an old tree not too far from where he was standing it was tall and sturdy for the most part though the branches were high up and looked as if the would break from his weight. Deducing it as the best way to get where he needed to be Lo'campo tightened his robes and gripped the large trunk of the tree proceeding to pull up. He had not made much progress before he lost his footing and fell from the tree cursing in frustration. His second attempt didn't go any better loosing his grip and scrapping his hands thus falling back to the earth. It was apparent that climbing was not his strong suit as the faint giggling of the children on the front porch watching him work. Think that you can do better? he asked the children signaling them to come over. At first they were hesitant of the Akalak an un-trustful look upon their brows. Lo'campo gave a smile and motioned for them to come teach him something new to which they smiled in return and approached.
Lo'campo watched as the children ran up the tree grasping on small knots and dents in the trunk moving swiftly as on being flipping and turning like an acrobat and resting on the first trunk. There was no question at it, he couldn't do anything that the little one's had shown him. Showing them respect he playfully bowed down to them as they flipped from the branch back to ground level. Can you teach me how to do that? He asked moving his body in small motion imitating the things that they did. The sun had now moved well into the sky over the city shining over Lo'campo who stood next to his instructors moving as they moved. They faced the front of the building in an attempt to climb it to reach the balcony that overlooked the front entrance. Doing as they did he approached the front wall gripping the first ledge with his fingers only to be scolded and told to use his hands. He could tell that they had to live here with Jilene. Re-positioning his grip he followed through pulling up using his arms and just to carry most of his weight and digging his feet into the wall. He looked to his teachers who nodded their heads in approval and proceeding to the next movement. Now things were going to get difficult. Concentrating on what he saw Lo'campo pulled himself up and tried grasping the next beam only to miss and reconnect with the ground below. He was starting to feel the pain beginning to sink in. Returning back to the front wall he got back into the starting position his feet back up against the wall.
Focusing more on his hand movement he pulled himself up clamping down with a hard force to catch the next beam. Letting out a breath he looked at his teachers who gave him a thumbs up. He watched as the now loosened their grips and began swinging their bodies side to side gaining momentum with each swing then using their feet to support themselves upside down. Lo'campo laughed. He knew there was no way that he could do that. The children persisted, reassuring that it was easier than it looked. He didn't know why he let them fill him with false hope, he knew that it was false hope yet he tried. He loosened his grip until he dangled like a dead man and began swaying from side to side. Getting a thumbs up from the little one's he sent his feet upward turning himself upside down holding on for dear life. He had done it. It wasn't the best form and he was struggling to keep himself from falling forward, but he was there. Doing as they did he very slowly shuffled to the side toward the tree trying to keep up with his more experienced housemates. Now directly in front of a lower branch, he watched in awe as the younger males sent the lower halves of their bodies forward over their backsides one following the other and plopping down onto the branch. Lo'campo strained his eyes trying to look up to see if he was aligned the proper way to land as gracefully as they did. Taking the chance he slowly moved his feet from the wall trying to control the movement. At first it seemed as if he were doing it until all his weight shifted with him causing him to fall forward onto the branch landing in between his legs. Pain shot through his body as he death gripped the branch, all his blood drained from his body. The children winced at the sight as if they knew how he felt, patting him in comfort.
Regaining himself, he slowly stood up balancing himself on the thick branch. Putting one foot in front of the other he stopped about foot from the base trunk. He looked up behind him at the balcony that was only a hop and a grasp away. Getting a better footing he moved to jump toward the trunk and launch himself up toward the balcony. It all played perfectly in his head on how he seen it be done. Making a few last adjustments he moved, the weight of his muscular body became to much for the branch as it began to snap under his feet. He moved quickly placing his foot down and pushing off. He had come a little too short barely missing the balcony by a few inches. He held on for dear life looking down at the ground laughing at himself to replace the adrenalin fueled fear that was setting in. He pulled himself up now on the second floor laying down to catch his breath. Acrobatics was harder than it looked. He measured on how far he was from the nearest window planning on how he was going to reach it from the tree. The children had left him to travel back down to the ground to fetch his bucket and cleaning cloth leaving him by himself to reach his destination. Looking at the closest branch Lo'campo stood on the balcony railing. Doing as he was shown he jumped up taking hold of the tree limb and pulled himself up. He was closer now. He looked at the next branch that was farther around the tree leaving a large gap to be crossed to reach it. There was another tree branch closer but higher up, taking the chance he leaped for it swinging off it as soon as possible and making a shaky landing onto the next. He had the hang of it now for the most part. The window opened and the children passed his bucket and cloth with a long stick. Hanging it on the arm of a branch he continued back to his work duties thanking the kids for teaching him something new.
The sun was now at it's lowest point of the day as it crept back behind the horizon of the city. Lo'campo stood in the yard looking at his work for the day. His body was sore, his hands cut from climbing, his robes were dirty and extremely heavy from all the water that it soaked, he was hungry, tired, and in dire need of sleep. He lumbered through the front door and made his way up to his room dropping his robes and flopping in bed. He had never done anything this hard in his life and that was a statement coming form him. He was glad to be rid of it though as he rested his eyes. With a sigh he let his body rest for he knew that Jilene would most likely wake him early again for work sooner or later. |
