General Description: A highly venomous, but small, amphibious sea snake. Length: They rarely reach one meter in length, the males being even smaller. Weight: Generally about 300 grams. Coloring: Lacks the vivid "banded" pattern common to other sea snakes, featuring only very faint stripes within an overall dark brown coloring. It is also considered a "dwarf" species. Fangs: Small, hollow fangs, located at the front of the mouth. Disposition: Because of its singular global territory, a single lake on a single island in the Solomon chain, it is the dominant predatory species in its environment. As a result, it is fairly aggressive against other perceived predators, especially when fully on land, where they are less comfortable. Diet: Generally fish and small rodents. Defenses: As an amphibious species, it can lie in wait either on land or in the water. It's small size and even coloring make it harder to detect. Venom: Bites are usually painless and may not even be noticed when contact is made. There is usually little or no swelling. The most important symptoms are rhabdomyolysis (rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue) and paralysis. Early symptoms include headache, a thick-feeling tongue, thirst, sweating, and vomiting. Latent symptoms include generalized aching, stiffness, and tenderness of muscles all over the body. Passive stretching of the muscles is also painful. This is followed later on by paralysis of voluntary muscles. Paralysis of muscles involved in swallowing and respiration can be fatal. Muscle breakdown may start to show up in the blood plasma, which can cause the urine to turn a dark reddish, brown, or black color, and eventually lead to acute renal failure. After 6-12 hours, the results of muscle breakdown can lead to cardiac arrest.
As it pertains to Goneszh :
Based on this species, Goneszh lacks the usual vivid banding color scheme as a snake or Dhani, and has uniformly browned skin more akin to an Eyktolian. The snake is also a "dwarf" species, which accounts for Goneszh' diminutive size. He is only a 12' snake, an 10' Dhani, and a 5' human, all well below the standard range of an Iyvess. This causes many people to believe his human form to be an older child at a glance, likely of Benshiran heritage. He has the tell-tale Iyvess mark on the inside of his right bicep. To disguise it, he had it worked into a larger tattoo encircling his arm in human form. He has not felt it necessary to disguise it in snake or Dhani form.
Character Concept Goneszh is the son of the Spiritist, Viszra, a Freshwater Iyvess Dhani. He traveled with her and a few others, seeing examples of the best and worst of the people of Mizahar, as his mother plied her talents to balance the extremes of ghostly visitations; sometimes aiding, sometimes banishing, sometimes dusting. On his own now, Goneszh has also learned to find assets in the spirit world, or to eliminate the uncooperative.
Being very much on the small side, and having a coloration suited to the deception, he passes himself off as a wandering Benshiran spiritist. He has naturally found himself most comfortable in communities near water and warmth. Since he does not care for Eypharians, or the other species of Dhani, he has left Eyktol. He has found Kenash to be quite suitable, though it would be better without the Rajor constrictors. With its heat, swamps and relatively friendly attitude towards "Benshirans" like himself, he feels quite comfortable. He also feels close to his goddess, Makutsi, and frequently rejoices in the rainy inundations she brings to the area, joining in with regular rain dances.
To cover the tell-tale sibilant "s" of his racial speech, Goneszh claims that a stutter makes it sound that way. This gives him plausible cause to avoid the letter as much as possible, but renders his common less than fluent. He claims his Benshiran heritage as being "from the tent of Viszra, of the children of Havid." Any that know this is not entirely proper would accept that he wishes to limit the stuttering by avoiding the word "sons".
Character History Goneszh remembers little of his snakeling period in Eyktol, though the eventual excursion to Eloab, and the ensuing inundation with ghostly presences and possessions left a mark that he can never forget. It was what tied him indelibly to his mother, the spiritist, Viszra. Though their innate matriarchal culture would have kept him deferential and respectful of his mother in ANY event, this introduction to Spiritism gave him an insight into other peoples and cultures that curbed his aggressive, predatory nature enough to actually enjoy travel for its own sake.
And travel they did. Initially in an exclusively Iyvess company, their numbers swelled with additions and shrank with departures, to slowly encompass a racially diverse group which moved from region to region, trading and interacting with the indigenous populations. Much of this was a tremendous aid in discovering new ways to approach unsettled spirits of previously unfamiliar races. For himself, Goneszh found great benefit in the company of travelers that could teach him new abilites. It was during these travels that he gained his introduction into Hypnotism and Projection.
The one sad thing was what inevitably happened when someone learned of their Dhani blood. Immediate defensiveness and hostility altered every stay in every city they moved through. Viszra always told Goneszh that he had the other races of Dhani to "thank" for the intolerance they were subjected to upon discovery. That in her view, it was part of the Iyvess mission to offset this bias by resisting reactionary behavior. She always stated that these other peoples no doubt had good reasons to feel the way they did, and not to take it personally. That only calm dialogue would ever change anything. Her numerous experiences with ghosts, and their tragedies, had taught her this many times over.
Being a young Dhani though, Goneszh found it difficult to suppress his desire to punish other races for their insults, especially those directed at his mother. And as the ratio of Iyvess to non-Iyvess in their party dwindled in their travels, the feeling of being "safely back in the group" waned considerably. This was horribly compounded by their arrival in Ravok.
They were betrayed by a party member, and sold into slavery to a rich Nitrozian fop. When his mother's identity was discovered, they were set aside for an especially cruel spectacle. In The Pits a special event was held called 'The Ghostly Games'. Gladiators were possessed by ghosts and made to fight with Soulmist imbued weapons so every participant could be hurt. Any ghosts refusing to cooperate were threatened with immediate "dusting". Wagers were made on a variety of outcomes based on ghosts surviving alone, mortals alone, or the teamed combinations.
The worst possible round came when they were pitted against each other. But early in the competitions, his mother had told him not to use his developing spiritist skill. That there would come a time when it would serve him the element of surprise. When they were supposed to fight, they of course both refused. His mother was cut down before his eyes, the perpetrators assuming she was the only real threat. Goneszh went berserk, his spiritist skill suddenly granting him a control and communication with his teamed ghost, who spontaneously joined him to escape the madhouse that the Pits had become, once the bets were made void by his mother's execution.
He and the ghost split company after escaping Ravok, and Goneszh continued his journeys, remembering his mother's desire for him to resist aggression, but also remembering what it got her in the end. He took up where she left off, as a traveling spiritist, keeping her soul beads as an heirloom, and eventually finding his way to Kenash. He wondered if anything would be different here.
