Illiteracy

Postby Sayana on October 11th, 2014, 2:50 pm

Hmm. Well I may have to rethink a bit of my character's history, but that'll be pretty easy.

I haven't actually done much research on historical city-states but it just seemed a bit odd that all the cities are identical in the way of education (without some kind of inter-city government deciding and enforcing these standards).

I wonder if they have a standard set of spellings or if due to the isolation of certain cities, there are words that are spelt differently in Common depending on the location.

Illiteracy

I didn't say the education was standardized across the cities. What I said was that each got a basic education in reading, writing, and arithmitic. I'm sure they also get their individual histories, and any propoganda the people teaching them want them to know.

Avanthal for example would get a healthy dose of Morwen Lore. While Ravok's pupils would grow up learning how great Rhysol was and how safe he keeps them. Syliras would teach about the knighthood, its history, and why its important in the world. I know in Riverfall, the Patron Gods of the city are probably taught as well as basic combat being part of the educational system. In that city, Kelvics would not be attending school unless they did so as guards for their charges. Kelvics there are treated as pets.

So... its uniformly practiced, but the flavor taught in these situations are different.
