Fall 80
With the noon sky glowing blue, and the smell of grass and leaves whiffed through the air, a young man, still in his teens followed a well worn path through the woods. The boy had a small shiver up his spine, like something was planned for him. He dismissed it entirely. Today was a routine patrol in the Bronze Woods. Nothing out of the ordinary would happen today, he had hoped. He walked slowly through the woods, his senses were heightened until he had reached the area where the his Patron Knight, Sera Catherine Hawke would be waiting. He thought about the strange silence of the woods, was there something bothering the animals? He stayed on the path, so the animals wouldn't be scared of him, this path has been used by a lot of knights and squires alike. He didn't like it.
He walked cautiously along the leafy path, it was late in fall and there was a bit of frost and a lot of leaves on the ground. The crunching of leaves underfoot was rather tensing to some, but Garland found them quite relaxing, but not today. He felt like he was being watched in the shadows.
He stopped and listened to the winds, he knew something was up, but he wasn't so sure. "It must be my imagination..."
Earlier that day...
Catherine had asked for the help of a few fellow squires to help Garland with his training, and in their training as well. Each squire had a quiver full of blunt arrows and a ranged weapon of their choice, except for the few that were going to use blunted spears and such.
Lilly Grant, the mysterious girl that had joined the knights a while back, she was a mage-knight. Not the most liked squire, but no one could argue that she isn't a good fighter and mage.
Oriana Earthtracker, the nervous girl that has been here for two or more years now, she wasn't the best squire, but she was certainly better than Garland with the bow, shield, and riding. In fact, she's almost better than him in every way, except in unarmed combat, where Garland was besting everyone who challenged him in that area. Mostly everyone.
Narick Lorgain, the loud boy, he was going to be the main problem for Garland here. He was the best with his bow and very dangerous enemy at range. Narick had a confident grin on his face, like one would expect on someone as loud as Narick Lorgain.
Cameron Tamson, the flirty young man that had been a bane in nearly every female squire in their little band of misfits, even Catherine. With skill on par with Garland in terms of weapon prowess, he won't be much bother.
Tobias Smythe, the silent bad boy of this band of misfits. Despite his good looks, he's not really sure why he's here. He doesn't need to learn how to use the bow, or any other weapon. Mostly he agreed to this was because he had to chance to give some payback to Garland after a rather awkward spar with him ended with Tobais pinned on the ground by the more skilled squire
Catherine had led the squires to their meeting place. Garland had to come here soon. "Narick, Garland will be here soon. Could you go and follow him? If he's close, come back and warn us, then get ready to attack when I give the signal. I want everyone to hide and wait for my signal, he's going to have to run back to the city, and survive. Everyone wearing their 'uniforms'?" Everyone had been wearing leather armor, and masks covering their faces. Garland was told not to bring any of his weapons to their patrol, which of course he found strange, but he didn't argue about it.
The squires had taken up positions here and there, being spread out as to not attract any attention. Catherine had placed a note, a shield and a wooden practice sword by the tree, setting them nicely against each other. With that, Narick had come back, saying he spotted Garland making his way here. With that Catherine hid inside a bush and waited for Garland to take the sword and shield.
Garland took the note and read it carefully.
"Run you stupid boy, get back to the city"
It was an odd note, and as he took the sword and the shield, he heard a rustling in one of the bushes. Catherine had signaled the attack and started doubling back to the city.
Narick had taken aim at Garland, the blunt arrows wouldn't kill him, they would just hurt a lot. He had a lot of practice with the bow, he won't miss. He pulled the string back to his chest.
But luck or chance, a butterfly flew towards Oriana and landed on her nose. She tried shooing it away, but it was adamant on staying and tickling her nose. She tried to hold it in, but her face contorted, readying for a sneeze, and as Narick shot, she sneezed, making Garland turn to her general direction, with his weapons raised up, just enough for Narick to miss.
The fight had just begun.
