Waylan |
Appearance Race: Human Gender: Male Age: Forty Years Old Birthday: 43nd day, Fall, 474 Av. Birthplace: Sunberth Appearance: To the victor goes the spoils, as the cliche goes, and in terms of appearance, Waylan is anything but a victor. Oh, he had it going for him at one point with his height, standing at a whopping 78 inches high, though the strain of growing up in Sunberth left him underdeveloped in terms of physical build. He isn't frail, persay--the years spent as a laborer in the forest outside Sunberth prevented him from ever going soft--but Waylan is not the man one goes to to do the heavy lifting either. Hard is the best word to use when describing Waylan's face, from the weathered skin to the cold, black eyes. His cheeks are of average fullness, his chin profound, his nose normal. His black hair is typically kept short, so as not to annoy him by falling over his eyes, and rarely looks washed, no matter how often Waylan actually bathes; the greasy look is just a part of his image. His sense of fashion is as drab as his appearance. Waylan rarely deviates from the blacks and the grays in his clothing, finding no joy in clothing himself in vibrant colors. Nor does he desire garish or "rich people" clothing either; unlike many of the street rats of the city, Waylan never really fantasized over wealth and the physical perks that came with it. He is satisfied with what little he has, as prevalent in his attire. Overall, Waylan looks the forty years he has lived thus far, and then some. Not that this bothers him; he's past the age of caring what he looks like. Character Concept Constant Traits Wise (+): Waylan has far outlived the expected life span of a street rat in Sunberth, establishing a stable, if traumatic life, in the process. From these many and varied experiences, he possesses a wizened demeanor that many of the city lack, simply for the fact that he has been around much longer than the rest of them. To put it simply, Waylan is street smart; otherwise, he probably wouldn't have made it this long. Def'n (adj): Having or showing experience, knowledge, and good judgment Withdrawn (-): Waylan has never been a fan of social interaction, instead slipping into the background whenever possible while allowing the more prominent personalities take center stage. Since the death of his wife and daughter, Waylan has only further removed himself from the everyday happenings of the world, rarely partaking in the practice. He's not a mute nor will he ignore someone when they approach him; his response will be curt, though, and he will look for the quickest path out of the interaction. In the rare instance where he initiates a conversation with another, it is to further his own goals and nothing else; petty conversation is just that to him. Def'n (adj): Not wanting to communicate with other people. Situational Traits Loyal (+): Waylan, though rarely partaking in the practice of friendship, is as loyal as they come in terms of companions. He isn't blind in this, of course; if someone proves themselves deserving of it, though, Waylan is willing to put himself out there for these individuals from then on out. Def'n (adj): Giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution Reserved(-): Waylan, in the instances where he does find himself in a group situation, is slow to reveal his emotions and thoughts. Sitting silently, he prefers to observe the others, analyzing their own thoughts before giving his own. This isn't a subtle attempt at leadership, though; his own thoughts are simply a suggestion with which someone else will use, along with everyone else's, to come up with a course of action. This isn't to say Waylan abhors leadership and will never take the position up on his own. He would just rather uses do it instead. Def'n (adj): Slow to reveal emotion or opinions Character History In terms of the typical life in Sunberth, Waylan's differed little from the countless other children subject to the difficulties of this dangerous city. Orphaned at a young age by the violence of the streets, the Sunset Quarters became the staging ground of Waylan's attempt to survive his hardships and make something out of his existence. And survive he did, delving into practices both legal and otherwise until he grew old enough to escape it all. These practices, especially those of the illicit nature, never broke Waylan's will though like many before him; when the time came to walk away, he was able to with a clean conscience. And, much to his relief, he didn't walk away alone. At the age of seventeen, Waylon married the love of his life, Natalia, escaping away with her to a better life. It was a good life, too, as good as one could make in Sunberth. Together they had a daughter, Eve, which Natalia took care of while Waylan worked various laborer jobs around the city; uneducated, these were the only positions he was ever cut out for. It put food on the table, though, so that was all that mattered to them. They had each other and that was all Waylan needed. And then Robern Dalagnar ripped it all away from him. Not the man himself, of course, but through the knives of his Daggerhand goons. It wasn't personal on their part, but a statement to be made; Natalia and Eve were slain in their home while Waylan was away, all in an attempt to intimate a store owner who was slow to yield to their extortion; he too had a family, but they were spared at the expense of Waylan's own, all under the guise of business. Thankfully, Waylan was spared the brunt of the trauma; he returned to the shell of his home, consumed by fire, and not the bodies of his wife and daughter. Once more Waylan was an orphan. This time, though, he had no plan to survive. He would've have ended himself too, if the Night Eyes hadn't come along shortly after this traumatic experience. Delighted to hear that the damages he had faced himself had been inflicted upon Robern as well, Waylan decided he could live long enough to aid these new figures in completely ending Robern Dalagnar. Thus, shortly after the assassination attempt on the Daggerhand's head, Waylan associated himself with the Night Eyes. He was not what you would consider a prominent figure, though; in all honestly, he did nothing more than provide a safe house from other members who needed to lay low and provide tidbits of information every once in a while when he came across it. Yet, to his grief-motivated self, this was more than enough. This would go on for years, until Waylan's lust for vengeance was sated with the lynching of Robern himself. By this point, Waylan's losses had become old wounds, so he decided to continue on with his life, simply to live, for his goals had finally been met. Since Robern's death, Waylan had withdrawn himself from Sunberth's society, focusing on surviving. While his door was still always open to a Night Eyes member who needed shelter, he tried to distance himself from the organization. He was simply a laborer, without direction and purpose, looking to live until he didn't any more. Or so he thought, at least; with the change of the season, and the death of another little girl, Waylan feels as if it will all be different soon enough.
