Detection vs Investigation

Postby Ruroc on December 13th, 2014, 7:52 am

The art of spotting that which is hidden has become hidden in meaning. The lore page for Detection redirects to Investigation.

Does this mean that my Investigation skill also determines my ability to notice someone who is hiding or sneaking around nearby without expecting them?

Detection vs Investigation

Postby Caelum on December 13th, 2014, 3:42 pm

Mornin'. :)

Detection is one of several skills that feed into investigation. If you are actively attempting to detect a thing, you are also investigating. But when you are actively investigating a thing, you are not always detecting. You could be engaging a different related skill, or often several at once.

It works the same way intelligence does. They have skill sets full of more active and obvious words that when in use for the specific purpose of investigating or intelligencing both the set skill and the parent skill should be awarded with appropriate lore.

Now if you really want to be confused, you can investigate a thing as an act of intelligence and you can also use intelligence techniques in an investigation.

I hope this helps!

Detection vs Investigation

I use Observation and never Detection as a skill. I think if an ST awards you Detection instead of Observation you should question that. Investigation is its own skill. That's why Detection has never been added to the skill list (unless someone else has added it recently).
