Character History
Edalene was born into the Diamond Clan on the 34th day of Summer, 494AV. Her mother was a strong Drykas woman, who had skills in the spear and was enamoured of artwork, so it came as some surprise when Hiya, a physically fit woman, died in childbirth with Edalene, her first child. Hiya and her husband Damie had only been married for the better part of a year. Her death left the young Damie, only twenty three, alone with a small child and a lot of heartache. Nevertheless, he stepped up to challenge of raising a child alone. Damie accomplished with Edalene, though she was not easy child to raise. As a baby, she would gabber incessantly at anyone who would listen, and had a habit of grabbing whatever was nearest and gnawing on it. There were several close calls when she would grab a dagger or sword and bring it towards her mouth. Damie would spring up in a frenzy and stop Eda from cutting out her entire mouth. Eda was an inquisitive child, often involving herself in adult affairs, usually not ending up well. She would giggle awkwardly if reprimanded, and crawl off in shame to find some other adult business to disrupt. This was a trait she kept well into her teenage years. When Eda learned to talk, it became even worse. Her physical presence was amplified by the constant question that surrounded her – “What? Why? When?” Despite the other Drykas’ annoyance, her father actively encouraged her curious nature, teaching her the Common language as well as Pavi, and telling her of his many adventures and escapades in the Sea of Grass – battling Zith, grappling with glassbeaks, all manner of true warrior like situations. Eda held Damie in high esteem, raising him to almost God like status. Anything her beloved father did was sacred. It was when she was three that her father obtained his knotted broadsword, a sword which would come to mean much to Eda, though she did not know it at the time.
When she was four, Eda woke up one morning and miraculously realised that everything her father did was not unattainable, and was actually entirely possible. Thus began Eda’s passion to become as adept at the broadsword, and as skilled a warrior, as he. She begged him morning, day and night for three years, trying to convince him to let her learn his discipline. Damie refused for three years, wary to teach his scatter brained daughter such a destructive weapon. If he were entirely honest with himself, he was loath to put his only daughter in a position where he might lose her. She was his only family. Eda, for three years, would get her daily chores done as quickly as possible. After she had fulfilled her jobs, she would sprint off to the training grounds. It was here that Eda secretly memorised the moves of the sword, observing and memorising, and later practising and perfecting them with a stick if she found one, and thin air if she could not. Eda learned all she could, determined to learn as much as she could about the sword. One day, when she was seven, she finished all of her chores earlier than usual, so she ran off to the training grounds to watch the warriors spar. She watched as her father stood out on the grounds and fought with such prowess. It was with growing pride, awe and a little bit of jealousky that Eda watched her father fight. Little did she know that he too watched her on the sidelines and had made a long awaited decision. After the other warriors had left the grounds, he drew Eda aside and told her what she had always wanted to hear. He would teach her the sword, and her father’s knotted blade would be hers. Thus began Eda’s training.
Eda trained exceptionally hard, and it would be truthful to say that everyone was surprised by how well she did. She by no means had any natural skill with the blade, but she practiced long and hard. Of course, she did not mention that she already knew the moves from practicing with a stick. Her father was also impressed, in his silent unflappable way. Eda grew in skill quickly and steadily. She would often stay behind at the War Pavillion to train after her lessons had finished, going over the moves she had learnt, memorising them. She fell in love with the blade, though still untested in the art of the kill.
Though her father and the other men at the War Pavillion taught her well, one love pushed out another. While Eda’s skill with the blade improved, her relationship with her father deteriorated. As Eda grew up, she desired a relationship with her father that did not center around her childlike adoration of him. Damie, though, had not been an emotional being since Hiya died, and hence did not cope well with the sudden demands for a meaningful relationship. Though he loved Edalene, he was constantly frustrated by her still childlike antics and her lack of a Strider. A proud, skilled Drykas himself, he was hard pressed to accept his seemingly fail Drykas daughter. Their relationship began to fall apart, starting with small arguments. Later in her years, around the age of thirteen and fourteen, Eda and Damie began to have intense fights.
Their last major fight occurred when Edalene was fourteen. Her cousin, Yartree, had made a passing derogatory comment to Damie about Eda’s lack of a Strider. A touchy topic with Damie, he came home that night and demanded of Eda why she was still such an immature, useless child. She was not a Drykas at all, he yelled. Eda was shocked into silence at his sudden outburst. Damie continued to yell, culminating when he said “You will NEVER live up to Hiya’s memory!” Eda snapped at this point, unable to keep silent any more. “It’s good my mother died bearing me, because she would have hated the man you’ve become!” Damie stumbled back, as if struck. He regarded her silently, then stepped out of the Pavillion. Without her father to talk to, Eda trained harder than before, and took to wandering around Endrykas in her spare time. She loved to observe people as they went about their ways, and she would sometimes involve herself in their affairs. She, as a child, would often wander off into the Sea of Grass, but she has since lost much of her independence and courage. Eda is still very much the fourteen year old who has just destroyed any chance at a relationship with her father, and her lack of maturity shows. She still wanders Endrykas, restless and wanting something more – she’s just not too sure what that something is. |
