Seaside Market
It was the fourth day after Dieter’s arrival in Sunberth and it was time for him to do a few of the things that he had needed to since entering the city. Today was going to be Dieter’s first shopping day in the new city and he had a short list of things that he needed, first and foremost he needed a few changes of clothes, and secondly he needed to get a scabbard for the sword that he had slung through a piece of twine that he was using as a belt. 'New belt might be nice too' Dieter thought, adding it to the list in his head, next to the new clothing. The clothing, to him, was a must have. He had to get some new clothes; he would not be walking around in the same thing every day, unlike some of the people to be found in this city.
It was a chilly day in winter; the snow had started almost simultaneously with the start of the new season and the cold came with it. At the time there was little more than a light bit of snow covering the ground but it was still interesting how quickly the weather started. But it didn’t take long for Dieter to reach the market and have to stop focusing so much on the weather and more on the people looking for a chance to rob the new guy. The Seaside Market had its regular busy vibe about it, people milling about looking at different stalls looking for the best deals of the day from people whose prices didn’t actually change that much. It was easy to be lost in the crowd and lose focus on stopping the thieves from taking the meagre things you carried, but Dieter never made this mistake and kept one hand on his pouch and one hand on his sword at all times, always aware that someone was scoping him out as a target.
The first thing that Dieter found was a place selling clothing; these were not too difficult to find in the city. After a short amount of haggling Dieter purchased three cotton shirts, three pairs of pants, three pairs of cotton undergarments, a pair of leather gloves, and a new belt made of nice leather with an iron buckle on the front. It wasn’t a huge expense to Dieter, who still had a fair amount of money left over from the sale of all that he had owned in Kenash. The little bit of luxury he could afford was nice, especially when food was, too say the least, scarce in the city.

After purchasing the clothes that he had come for, Dieter set out to locate a scabbard for his broadsword. The sword hanging free from the bit of rope was not an easy thing to pull free and often cut through the rope if taken out too quickly. This was not ideal for Dieter, who then had to carry the sword around by hand. With the belt he bought earlier he would be able hang a scabbard easily and be able to draw quickly. Scabbards were a bit more expensive than the rest of what he had bought, but Dieter viewed it as something near to a necessity if he wanted to protect himself.
After a short bit of walking and looking at different stalls Dieter managed to find one that was selling wooden scabbards with leather covering the outside, making them look nicer than they were. While Dieter was inspecting the scabbard that he was thinking about buying, one that fit his sword nicely but, as would be expected, not perfectly, the general speech and noise was cut off by a loud scream of pain. The crowds in the area went silent for a few moments before a handful went back to what they were doing, while a larger group of them began to panic as more similar screams came from different areas soon after. Clearly there was some kind of organized violence happening in the area.
As everyone began to panic Dieter, scabbard still in hand, took off into the crowd. He wasn't normally much of a thief but this was a near perfect chance for him to escape without contention and without paying, there was no real reason for him not to steal the scabbard. Dieter quickly ducked into a snowy side alley and put on his new belt and scabbard, he knew that if this was some kind of gang fighting that many of them would not care about civilian casualties as long as they completed their assigned goal. When he felt that he had his scabbard properly attached at his left hip he grabbed the rest of his things, in a burlap sack that he had taken from the clothing stand, and took off through the market back towards Aquillar Hot Springs where he had rented a room, at least until he got around to purchasing a house in the city.
There was now open conflict in the market between two distinct groups that Dieter did not recognize aside from being members of some of the opposing gangs in the city. Some of the people fighting showed no care for damage to the civilians and some innocent people were on the ground, wounded, next to gang members who were equally wounded. Dieter tried to keep his head down but his shopping route had led him to the far end of the Market from where he needed to be so it would be a long trek through what was developing into an open battlefield.

While Dieter was walking, and trying to keep people’s attention off of him, he spotted a group of men talking. One of them stopped talking and pointed to Dieter, said something to one of his allies and pulled out his sword. Upon seeing this Dieter attempted to speed up and escape without being harmed, but the man clearly would not allow that to happen. This scoundrel pulled his sword from its sheath and ran towards Dieter. Seeing that he would not be allowed to leave Dieter began to look around, to try to see anything in his surroundings that he could use but there wasn't much to be found aside from two crates near the entrance to a side alley. As the man approached Dieter also drew his sword, dropped his shopping bag, and entered a stance, turned slightly sideways and with his right arm forward and the basket-hilt held just above his hips and the point low and forward towards the approaching man.
Fighting with a broadsword was different than most other forms of swords; the large basket around the hand gave lots of protection and allowed the user to bounce strikes down to the hand without worry of injury. So, when his opponent closed the distance and made his first, fairly wild strike in the form of a downward slash that would normally be aimed for the fingers or wrist Dieter took advantage of the situation by striking upwards in a motion to bump the other’s blade off of the hand guard. This deflected the other man’s blade out of his control while remaining in his hand. Dieter felt only as though his hand had been smacked by a thin piece of wood on his fingers, and this in no way hindered his ability to strike back at the man. While the opening was available Dieter made a short swipe at the man’s thigh which was easily dodged by his opponent.
These slight back and forth blows went on for nearly a minute with no one gaining an advantage until one of the aggressor’s slashes passed Dieters guard and caught his left upper arm in a way that was nothing but annoying to Dieter, it didn’t reach the muscle and just cut flesh. At the same time as it was not dangerous it was infuriating and brought Dieter to the fight with a renewed vigour, looking at his opponent more carefully than before. The strike landing seemed to have the opposite effect on his opponent who began to get sloppy and overconfident in his fighting instead of more attentive. This left openings for Dieter to use to his advantage, the first being the man’s willingness to get very close before striking. The first few times this happened Dieter simply blocked and prepared to defend again, but on one of his opponents more grievous mistakes Dieter was able to get his hand in to deflect the blow and step in to close the distance until he could grab the man with his hands. While it was a possibility Dieter did not take this option, he instead went with the plan of stepping behind his opponents legs and using the hilt of his sword to strike the man in the mouth, tripping him to the ground. While he was falling the man dropped his sword, it made a muffled clatter when it hit the ground, a satisfying sound.

Dieter had his opponent on the ground laying his back, spitting blood and what appeared to be one or two teeth in a thick bloody mixture. He quickly stepped over his now defeated opponent and placed his foot on the man’s right wrist, pinning it firmly to the ground. The man now appeared to be little more than a boy, maybe 17 years old or, perhaps, younger than that. His upper lip was thoroughly cut from the metal blow he had received from the basket hilt of Dieters sword and the boy’s own teeth. Dieter wanted to leave the kid with a bigger reminder of him than just a few missing teeth and a cut up lip, so with the arm still pinned, Dieter brought his sword blade down to the inside of the arm and made a deep cut along the width of the arm, a few inches below the elbow, and another a few inches below that.
“Was it worth it, was it petchin’ worth it kid?” Dieter yelled while slicing through the flesh. All the while Dieter was ignoring the screams and flailing of the kid, having to silence him once with a strong kick to the ribs to make the second cut. This would probably not kill the kid if he got proper medical attention soon but it might stop him from properly wielding a weapon ever again, the muscles being sliced as they were.
Having finished this Dieter cut the shirt off of the boy, he wanted to do two things with the shirt. The first was to make a small bit of crude wrap for the cut on his arm, which he did quickly. The second thing was to put his sword back in its new scabbard, after wiping it off on a rag from his opponent’s shirt. Dieter then went to retrieve the dropped sword of his opponent, it had rolled a few feet away when it was dropped, and sat with a small amount of blood gleaming off of the tip and staining the snow around it a light red. Dieter picked up the blade and used the same rag of shirt to clean the tip of the blade of the gleam of his blood from the blade before beginning to continue his journey to the Hot Springs for some now well needed rest. He took the time to glance over his shoulder at the boy while collecting his bag. The kid was now lying in what was quickly turning into a pool of blood as the snow was melting and the stone streets were allowing for pooling again.
At the edge of his vision after turning back, he saw someone running towards the boy, possibly one of the people that had been with him before but Dieter didn’t really know or care. He just wanted to return to his room for some rest. He managed to get home without any other problems from the outburst of violence and washed out the cut with some water before sitting down to eat. He would be staying in his room for the rest of the night, allowing all of this to blow over.
