Appearance Race: Ghost (formerly human)
Gender: Male
Age: 34 (29 at death)
Birthday: 73 of Fall, 480 AV
Birthplace: Sunberth
Appearance: Everett stands at a thin 5'6” with light skin, light brown hair, and gray eyes behind a pair of thick glasses. His face is creased by faint lines of age, especially around the eyes and mouth, the face of a man who smiles often. He has a permanent sort of self-conscious slouch. He shows no outward signs of his untimely demise, but has the disconcerting habit of forgetting to move his feet when he “walks.” He is dressed in the last clothes he wore: a ratty, too-large winter coat, plain clothes, and a thick wool scarf, dyed faded blue. His expression usually varies between “blank” and “confused”, but if one manages to gather his attention for longer than a few moments they may catch a rare, nervous smile.
Character ConceptIn life, Everett may have been sharp of mind or keen of wit, but in death he's become... forgetful. In his more active moments, he can be found drifting the streets of Sunberth, asking any who'd care to listen if they've seen his son. At other times, he settles for staring blankly into the distance, lost somewhere in his memories. He has the tendency to forget even very recent interactions in favor of more distant recollections, and finds names particularly difficult. When he does manage to break from his reverie he comes off as polite, albeit anxious and a little jittery. He is easily distracted in action and conversation, and even when speaking his eyes are constantly roving, searching for something that's never there.
In his rare moments of complete lucidity Everett is a cheerful and friendly person, convinced despite all odds that there's a bright side to everything, no matter how dark it seems. He looks to the future with optimism and eagerness, and refuses to let hard times dull his spirit. Sunberth can be a dangerous place, even cruel, and he's seen a fair share of loss in his lifetime, but he firmly believes that bad times don't undermine the good. No matter how painful things are now, it was better once, and the pain only makes those old memories sweeter.
Character HistoryThe name
Everett Larahan, Professional Scrivener once graced a sign hung on a building near the river, where customers could have their contracts, letters, and other documents copied out for a few minas. Salvaged from his father's failing bookstore, Everett's shop made a decent income writing up contracts for merchants and copying out ledgers, enough to support a frugal young couple with low ambitions. Everything changed, however, when Everett's wife Allison died in childbirth, leaving him to care for their infant son, Jamie. He did the best he could, juggling his work with the care and education of a young child, and over the next seven years managed to raise a solemn boy with his father's love of books and his mother's thirst for adventure. Though life could be difficult, the city unfair, the two forged through with dedication and optimism.
But Sunberth was a crueler mistress than Everett could have anticipated. Having already stolen his wife, it took the opportunity to take his son as well. In the winter of 509, during a terrible blizzard, Jamie disappeared from right off the family's doorstep. Terrified and desperate to find his son, Everett took to the streets, forging blindly through wind and snow that turned the world into a white void. So desperate was he, so blind, that he inadvertently set foot on the frozen surface of the river... and fell through.
But a father's love is a peculiar thing, and it persisted even in death, driving his shade to continue the search. Whether he even realizes the fact of his demise is questionable, and he has long since lost track of time, drifting from memory to memory as he walks the streets of Sunberth, perpetually searching for his lost child.
